It started soon after that. Little things, little questions that never would have been asked before. Max hadn’t ever been restrained, there had been plenty of prodding, sarcastic questions, but now there were a lot of searching ones too.

In which David is trying to make his new family work, Max is suspicious and highly contagious, and Gwen catches a Tangela.

As a part two to what I can honestly say is one of my favorite Dadvid fanfics, how could it be any less than perfect? i know it sounds hard to believe is a story with the perfect amount of fluff and a beautiful show of emotion through it's adventure. I've always strived to make a fic as peaceful as this one while keeping it's power and message through the good times, and this writer pulls it off with ease. The_Escaped has once again blown me away with their writing skills, and I can't wait to see what more comes of them as an author.

I can't even begin to express how much this story means to me. How Long It Takes To Make A Home is a beautiful piece about learning, love, and living with your past without fear of it. As someone who has grown up being neglected and acted out often as a kid, this story shows just how you can learn and move past that, survive through your shitty developmental years even while carrying the weight of your past. To flowersalesman, I hope you continue to use your writing talent to make pieces as moving and thought provoking as this one. Thank you so much for using it on this.

    “Fucking useless. Fucking brat!”
Max jerked awake, gasping, and scrabbled back on the mattress until his back hit the wall. This wasn’t his room. This wasn’t his house. Where in the fuck was he? Where were his parents? Wh-
    Why was the bed shaking?
A sharp whistle pierced the air, and dark, fast shape rattled by. A train? The light filled his room for a split second, throwing everything into sharp white light.
There was a splash of color on the wall. A stick with blue paint tapering around it. His hoodie was half falling off the edge of the bed. Mr. Honeynuts was lying next to his pillow. Someone had tied a yellow bandana around his neck.
Max sighed and let his head thump against the wall. The vibrations as the train rumbled by shook down into his bones.
    “Fucking David.”

Alternatively: Max and David both adjust to their new living situation.

Beautifully written, perfect to pull at your heart strings. a place where you and i can stay wonderfully highlights the after-effects of being raised in an abusive home and the reactions adults have to seeing these effects, all while crafting a beautiful short story. So to The_Escaped, bravo, and kudos to you for creating such a beautiful and heart-wrenching story!
