Summary
Garreg Mach Monestary is an elite soldier's boarding school nestled right in the middle of a continent that always seems barely a breath away from all-out war. It's a safe haven for commoners and nobles alike, separated from the brutality and bloodshed of daily life in the slums of Fódlan - ironic, considering what is taught within those walls. It's the best opportunity to escape a pitiful poorman's death - the chance to become a revered protector of the land, or a visionary of the people, or a respected scholar. Pike's dream had once been to attend, but with no Crest, no funds for the steep tuition, and no noble blood to speak of, his hopes were snuffed out before they even began to take root. Things only worsened after his village was destroyed by a mysterious cult.
With no family, no money to his name, and a more Tragic Backstory than the worst video game protagonists to-date, he turned to the life of a mercenary. It's harsh and unforgiving, but there are few other options for commoners like him.
During a particularly rough winter, fate brings them to cross paths with a squadron of students deployed by the Monastery. Perhaps his dreams aren't as unattainable as he once believed.

Summary
Once upon a time, a beloved prince was cursed to live his days as a hideous beast as punishment for refusing the advances of a vile daemon. He was left with a destroyed castle, a miserable kingdom, and an enchanted rose locked under a glass dome - an oppressive presence acting as a magical hourglass counting down the years leading to his doom. If he could learn to love another and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell, the spell would be broken. If not, he would be forced to remain a beast for all time.
As the years passed, he felt into despair and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a beast?
