Summary
Set over 80 years before construction began on The Last City, at the very beginning of the Dark Age.
Hiwa has spent the past 7 years of her life attempting to find her way off Nessus. Unsuccessfully.
The isolation of her past has made her desperate for community, something she finds in the form of an Eliksni encampment she's unceremoniously pushed into by increasingly problematic battalions of Vex. When the Eliksni refuse to shoot her and prove somewhat friendly, she decides to take a moment to compile information, learn about their culture, and hopefully find some form of meaningful connection.
This series follows her attempts to forge connections when she can return from death and the people around her cannot.

She was falling—weightless, no backup plan; this was the backup plan—locked in a struggle for choice against a man wearing an old friend's face. He had dived after her, determined to drag her back to The Order, back to a fate worse than death. She wouldn't give them the satisfaction. Never again.
His grip was strong, but her bloodied hand slipped free. His armor was sturdy, but her knife found the delicate circuits of his booster. They were both plummeting toward the streets below, and now neither of them would escape.
Her mission was done, she had won her freedom, and she had ripped victory for her people from the bitter jaws of defeat. If this was how it had to end, so be it—she would take a traitor with her.
Fate had different plans, however, as a golden portal opened in the air below the dueling pair and swallowed them up.
