It was a common issue when faced with Lucanis, who often dredged up feelings in Rook that he’d never felt before, leaving him confused and wanting and fighting the overwhelming desire to bask in his presence like one of the cats on the rare days the sun came out in Minrathous.

Keres woke gasping for breath around a high-pitched keen, curling in on herself as the memory of burning chased her into death.
“Easy there, cub,” said a voice above her, the deep, slightly-raspy voice almost familiar. “C’mon, up you get. No time to be layin’ around.”
She sucked in a deep breath, half-expecting it to burn her throat down into ruined lungs. When it didn’t, she blinked rapidly, pushing herself up to a sitting position. That didn’t hurt either, and she immediately pressed her hands to her chest, running them down over her stomach. She was whole. That didn’t seem right, but she couldn’t remember why.
“What,” she tried, but the words came out a rasping growl, like she’d never spoken before. She frowned, swallowed hard, and tried again. “What is this place? Why am I—”
“You’re dead, cub,” the voice said, and she turned blurry eyes on its owner.

Things have changed after finding Tanalorr - too many things. Cal Kestis finds himself faced with the biggest change of all in the form of ten-year-old Kata Akuna, their newest crew member. He doesn’t know what to do with her, and he’s not sure she knows how to feel about him. Since, you know. He’s part of the reason she’s an orphan.
With his crew low on credits, Cal distracts himself by focusing on the new job he’s picked up for them: bounty hunting. For a bounty hunter. Take the guy out, deliver them to Caij Vanda, and get a cut of the pay; it’s a reasonably good distraction, and he’s enjoying himself, even . . . until Caij has him tracking down bounties on worlds he nor Kata would’ve ever thought they’d have to go back to again.
