    Summary

“Come on, Felix,” Sylvain says in that tone Felix hates. It’s the one that came out when they were preparing to find Miklan and his bandits, when Felix had argued with the Professor and Dimitri and Ingrid about it, when Sylvain had said, Come on, Felix. It’s a house mission. Am I or am I not a Blue Lion?, as if that in any way cancelled out being Miklan’s brother. “I know I’m not the right package for everyone, but still. You’ve seen me.”

Before Felix can recover from that one-two punch—not the right package, as if Felix hasn’t been in love with him for years and years; you’ve seen me, a dagger slid between the fourth and fifth ribs, sharp and lethal—Sylvain continues, “And, you know, the Crest. It’s no Major Crest of Fraldarius, but you’ve got a lot going for you.”

Felix is going to kill him.

Sylvain gets a letter, drunk, and a confession, roughly in that order. Ingrid and Dimitri have opinions. Felix suffers throughout.

(Who is he speaking of? Marianne asks quietly, a few months before the sky comes crashing down around them.

Hilda rolls her eyes. Claude, duh. One beat, two, then, a little lower, Lorenz is, like, obsessed with him. He says it’s all about beating him and… I mean, maybe it is, but -- whatever. Either way, it’s Claude. He’s always talking about Claude.)

The world ended twenty-eight days ago. Lorenz doesn't know why they're keeping count.

    Summary

This smile is sunlight in Fhirdiad, the warmest part of winter-turning-spring, where the snow melts under children’s feet. This smile is crinkled eyes and something crooked in the corner of the mouth, like a secret you don’t have to tell. This smile reaches Sylvain’s eyes, reaches Felix’s heart, that guarded thing that beats with tremulous hope when his defences are worn down enough to let it.

This smile is Sylvain in this first year after war, when peace came so hard-won that it often still feels like a loss, but here he stands, like Felix emerging from the shadows to scold him is the sweetest victory he could imagine.

    Felix’s cheeks heat up.

If you ask Felix, the real danger in Faerghus isn’t the cold; it’s Sylvain Gautier’s stupid fucking smile.

    Summary

Dedue is already driving, has been since two seconds after Dimitri slammed the door shut. Those two seconds were used not to catch his breath, but to run his eyes over Dimitri, scan him for any injury. Dimitri knows this because he does the exact same thing to Dedue when their positions are reversed, when Dedue is shielding Ingrid and Annette from Petra Macneary’s high kicks and Bernadetta von Varley’s bullets while Dimitri keeps the engine running in his van, modified behind-closed-doors by Yuri Leclerc.

It’s a necessary side effect of what they do, of who they are.

Sylvain told him once, You gotta find what’s yours, what you care about, and keep it.

    Summary

Classic Faerghus for you. Pinning their hopes on a Hail Mary pass, like everything they’ve got can be summed up in one final desperate charge to defy the odds.

    Fuck it.

Felix has a lot of unresolved issues with Faerghus and the people who reside there. He’s genuinely enjoyed the last few months acerbically helping Lysithea give pointers to skaters at the Leicester rink, be they Fawns or figure skaters like Lysithea used to be, both on the ice and in the community kitchen. Before that, the year and a half of travel re-grounded him in his bones, something he didn’t know he needed until he tore out his own earth from beneath his feet.

    He likes where he is.

But he’s Felix Fraldarius, and Faerghus’ hooks are still beneath his skin. Time for one last curtain call.

    Summary

Felix has made his peace with Sylvain chasing after everyone with a pulse—peace, in this context, being redefined as has learned to tolerate the stabbing ache in his gut, to the point that he doesn’t notice it unless he thinks about it too hard, like an exposed nerve you learn how to live with—because he’s always known none of them really matter. It still sucks. It still feels like a kick to the chest sometimes, cracked ribs and short breath. But it’s survivable, because none of them have phone numbers Sylvain has memorised, like Ingrid’s, or birthdays he could recite half-asleep and drunk out of his mind, like Dimitri’s. None of them get to see the way Sylvain smiles when he means it, that crooked thing that slips out on Claude’s kitchen floor at two in the morning, like Felix does.

(These are the facts of the universe: water is wet, the sky is blue, and Sylvain Gautier will never want Felix Fraldarius.)

—The Faerghus four play a drinking game (Sylvain’s fault). More truths come out than intended (everyone’s fault).
