Summary
There’s something so exhilarating about playing in front of full stands.
Eyes watching the moves he makes, each breath, each look. They see him and his jersey, Craft plastered over the back, followed by a large 9 underneath. Where he stands, in a make-or-break soccer game, the team state-bound if they win.
They see him, and everyone around him, and he loves it.
He loves representing his school and playing like his life depends on it. He loves the people who yell and cheer for them. He loves the thrill that comes with it all.
The hype that comes with such a big game has brought on a full section of supporters, almost the entire school coming, along with double that amount in parents and other adults.
The exhilaration evaporates into nothing when one of the members from the opposing team kicks his feet out from under him, and then another promptly kicks him in the side of the head.
Or, Tommy gets injured during a game of soccer.

Summary
“Are you unhappy to be back home?”
“No!” he yells, eyes widening as he whips his head to look at Techno again. He realizes himself and quickly backtracks, “I mean– I love being home. Been a while, and all that, you know.”
Techno opens his mouth, only to shut it a moment later. Tommy’s breath shakes in his lungs as the snake constricts around them. He clenches his shaky hands into fists and tries to focus on the colorful graphics that display across the screen.
Techno only lets him have a moment before saying, “Did you like college?”
“Yeah,” he lies, wincing internally at the way his voice wavers.
He wants to reach a hand inside his chest and pull the reptile from around his organs. But, they’re too busy trying to hold his seams together, the thread of his composure pulling taught.
“Do you want to go back?”
Or, Tommy returns from his first year of college and doesn’t want to go back. He fears the disappointment the news will bring.

Summary
No one teaches you how to keep going when your brothers come back from the dead. They didn’t prepare him for his shoulders to straighten, heart yearning like he was a kid again. His hands stopped their awful trembling, finally able to draw a straight line. He watched the loose and shifty gravel at his feet turn to solid, packed soil, bursting with life.
He still wanted to yell at them and the world, show them all that the Tommy he is now is not the boy they left behind. He wanted to cry, wallow in the realization that all the self sabotage and doubt over the years turned around, a past wish manifesting. He wanted the world to stop and let him scream, thrashing and breaking their belongings because it’s not fair.
But, all he could do was hug them, hoping to never let go until his last breath. He wanted to be called sweet names, he wanted to be their little brother again. He’s jaded and angry with the world, but most importantly, he’s lonely and still but a child, looking up to his older brothers and worshiping the ground they walk on.
Or, the epilogue to a limit, to live it, or not at all.

Summary
Tommy used to love thunderstorms.
He was never afraid of them, unlike most kids. He’d sit at the window, curled up in a blanket, watching the pink and purple streaks spike and spread across the sky. Once the lightning reached its minimum, he’d run outside, splashing in the puddles. His laughter would drown out the rumbling cracks, melting the gray into something colorful.
Tommy never mourned the storms. The color of the lightning stayed with him, woven in Techno’s hair. The gray sky waved at him through the smoke from Wilbur’s cigarettes, the smell coating his lungs like the humidity always did. The warmth and laughs and fond looks followed him, even as the storm clouds were taken over by the sun.
But, now, Tommy hates thunderstorms.
They only mocked him now, reminding him of the empty rooms beside his. Phil would sit by Tommy as he cried, longing clawing at the boy’s form.
Or, Tommy's brothers move back home after eight years of never speaking a word to him.

Summary
There’s a grunt. One, two, three, quick and panicked, and suddenly a large, fluffy mass is leaning into Tommy’s space.
Still curled up in pain, Tommy almost misses it—almost misses the dilation of Techno’s pupils, almost misses the constant chuff, chuff, chuff, and snort, snort, snort, as Techno’s head dips down to look at him. But Tommy’s been looking for it all week, so, as if magnetized, Tommy still lifts his pained head upward.
Instinct-Techno is back. The Instinct-Techno that looks out for him. The Instinct-Techno that actually cares.

When Tommy was first rescued, he had told his crew that humans couldn't stand touch. Now, touch-starved and lonely, Tommy was willing to hold onto that secret forever.
