He’s not a stranger to it, exactly. It’s been happening as long as he can remember in different ways. As a child he wasn’t good at playing with other kids because they didn’t know how to play right, he never understood boundaries and felt like he was constantly walking the line, like a tightrope, and when he got a little older he kept having these useless panic attacks from everything being too loud, too bright, too much.
Nolan never really got better at managing it. Hiding it, sure, but everyone did that. Everyone had things they hid, insecurities they didn’t talk about. It’s nothing new.

Summary
Nolan is 14 years old when he starts.
Something about the stress of starting a new school without his best friend, his parents splitting up and completely checking out, and the general pressure of high school builds on him all at once. He figures it started with the grades dropping and then the lack of friends. Which leads him here, sitting on the lid of the toilet and staring blankly at the razor he swiped from the bathroom cabinet.
Or: Nolan starts to self harm when he's 14, and this is the journey he follows after.

Summary
Liam faintly remembers that this is the same Nolan who cried when kids would kill bugs on the playground, the same Nolan who would scrunch up his face in disgust at Liam’s peanut butter sandwiches. The same kid who would flash his crooked, toothless grin after winning a game, and the same kid who would excitedly run into the playground after it rained to splash in the puddles.
That same kid levels a crossbow to his chest.

“Pony, Pony,” Darry sits up from the rug and takes his youngest brother by the arms, “Johnny is dead. Dally is dead. But you can’t go too. We’d fall apart without you. We’d be nothing without you. Ever since you and Soda were born, my entire life has been about you two. You’re everything to me and, and-”
His voice cracks right down the middle, like a splinter of lightning across a darkened sky.
“Ponyboy, I watched Mom and Dad die, then Johnny and Dally. I can’t watch you die too. I know I’m hard on you, I know sometimes I get mad and I shout and I struggle, but I love you. I’m just so scared.”
Based on a scene in the musical where Cherry returns Johnny’s clothes to Ponyboy and he just sits with his knees to his chin, clutching the bundle of clothes to his chest and refusing to speak. It was so poignant, such a moment of raw and real grief.
