“Are you scared of me right now?” Bruce asks.
“I’m always scared of you.” That sounds bad, Dick thinks. “But it’s like, an existential thing, right? You’re kinda everything to me, I guess. And that’s scary. But also, uh. Comforting?” He searches Bruce’s unreadable face desperately for some OK signal, a sign that he understands or at least isn’t, like, upset with him.

The odd thing about it is, Liam’s no queer. Noel’s nearly certain of that. Well, right, not the oddest thing about it but – one collapses into the other, he figures. If Liam’s some kind of latent queer then it sort of makes sense he’d gravitate towards Noel, and yeah he’d be getting it a bit twisted around in his head, maybe, but his head’s always been a bit twisted around, especially after some little prick took a hammer to it.

There are times when Noel seems to go intangible. He’ll be standing right there next to Liam and then it’s like all of a sudden he’s fucking gone see-through, even when Liam reaches out and gets a good hold of his jacket or the flesh of his arm; he’s gone away and left a shimmery afterimage, like how lights can get stuck on the backs of eyelids – Liam can blink his eyes around and see Noel, but he’s not really there.

In the elevator, Noel tries to think about what he’ll do when he sees Liam in the hotel bar. He doesn’t quite recall how the fight earlier ended; he can’t guess whether Liam will still be raging or if he’ll be apologetically chummy or if he’ll have gotten pissed enough by now to forget the whole thing. It’ll be easiest if it's the latter, Noel thinks, but his head hurts. He wants Liam to know that. Liam’s the only person in the world – apart from their mam – who gives a shit when Noel is hurt, and Noel hates how Liam can always tell. He doesn’t want Liam to know it hurts, but he wants Liam to know he hurt him. He wants to hurt Liam with the hurt.

It’d been a joke because Liam didn’t need to pay Noel for coke, he could’ve gotten right up from the table and gotten himself his own in no time at all, it was just that he loved taking from Noel, specifically from Noel, like some kind of highly evolved parasite.

Back in Idaho I used to burn ants with the light concentrated through a magnifying glass. I got taught my alphabet and my numbers sat with my elbows on the sticky lino tablecloth in the dining room. I used to sit on the porch and watch storms blow in; bruised purple clouds clumping up on the horizon, like when you pull the plug on a soapy sink, and some clings to the enamel.
I feel like I’m circling the drain. When I ask Scott, he says he got washed down years ago.
