Fetch Joel. The decree of his king hurt worse than any blade.
Ren's stern face is staining his memory but not as conflicted as Martyn would have liked - doesn’t hurt Ren as much as Martyn wishes it would when ordering him to be the one to return the runaway prince he was to marry: to share beds and the King’s heart.
“For the betterment of their kingdoms Martyn, it is my duty.”
Ren at least has the courtesy of looking a little crestfallen when he put his hand on Martyn’s shoulder and reaffirmed his command - although he couldn’t tell if it was pain for giving the order or pain that Martyn couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
“As you wish. You majesty.” So coldly formal it almost blackened Ren’s hand with frostbite.
Just fetch him - Ren didn’t say “bring him back alive.” So far north, encroaching on the black ice of the Deep Frost citadel and its vile master it’s perfectly understandable if a monster or evil sorcerer would do away with the wayward prince - bird flying too far its gilded cage and all that. Yeah: that could happen.
Dragon claw marks were pretty indeterminable from other beasts.
Ren might find out. He would get over it.

Summary
Martyn works for a delivery service in a small town and Ren is a werewolf that lives in the surrounding forests.
The forests have been rumored to be overrun with all sorts of monsters, and monster hunters have been constantly coming and going. Martyn hates it because it makes his job so much harder, constantly having to go back and forth between the neighboring towns to deliver supplies for the hunters.

As he makes it his quest to unravel all of the mysterious secrets everyone is keeping. Unaware of the danger that lurks just outside of view.
