In the creche, cries in the night were left to silence themselves. Or, if they didn’t, they were silenced forcefully by the more hot-blooded members of the cohort (a group that Lae’zel was a part of, more often than not). But on the few occasions that the creche’s caretakers intervened, offering care and calm, she had rolled her eyes and returned to her bed. Their secret arts of quiet, transforming crying child to sleeping: that part of her home is almost as foreign to her as this place, and yet again she curses this world and all its people for being so inferior and weak as to make her feel completely powerless.
Shadowheart has a panic attack, Lae'zel tries to figure out how to help.
