Nymphia tells people she loves them all the time. Her mom, her friends, the lady who does her nails for her just the way she likes them, random people who give her a sincere compliment in the elevator. Yes, maybe with Jane it’s a little different because they’re dating, and maybe it has been a good few months, long enough where Nymphia sometimes thinks about wanting more, wanting something more committed– but none of that matters right now. The point is, she’d said it out of habit, and it doesn’t have to be any kind of big moment or confession. It doesn’t have to be a whole thing.
So, it’s good that Jane hadn’t taken it seriously.

She looks up, and it’s like she’s staring into the sun.
Not literally, because the only actual sun-colored thing on the girl is her headband– and, upon further inspection, the banana-shaped studs on her ears. But the girl’s smile is even more radiant up close, and the fluorescent lights behind her frame her dark hair like a wispy halo, and it takes everything Jane has in her to not melt on the spot in the girl’s warm glow.

It was wishful thinking. It had to be the truth. Glinda may not know much but she knew performance, and the more she thought about it the better it fit. Elphaba’s death didn’t make sense. Glinda had seen it with her own eyes and had stupidly believed that was proof it had happened.
Elphaba’s melting shadow had been wearing the hat. Glinda wasn’t sure of the scientification of melting, but surely either all or none of her clothes should have melted. Surely Elphaba herself shouldn’t have melted. Fiyero’s body was missing, and Elphaba’s hat was in her hands.
Glinda stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she realized she must have been crying. She looked crazy. It didn’t matter.
Elphaba was alive.

“Shhh. It’s me, it’s… it’s Glinda.” She’s suddenly not sure that’s going to be at all reassuring to Elphaba. “You’re safe. You’re safe, okay? Just sleep. I promise I won’t—” Won’t what? Tell anyone she’s here? Arrest her herself? Hurt her? Take her broom away? Imprison her? Everything that could finish that sentence feels to Glinda like she’s only reminding Elphaba what she could do. “I promise you’re safe.”
Elphaba crashes onto Glinda’s balcony, and Glinda has to hide Elphaba from the world while she recovers.

“Y’know what my mama said?” The edges of Jane’s words are rounded, slightly slurred. There’s a strand of hair caught in her eyelashes and Nymphia goes to brush it away. One touch isn’t enough - she needs to cup her face, cradle her and keep her safe.
“We all have feelings for our girlfriends,” Jane recounts with a sad little laugh, and Nymphia’s heart fucking drops. “We just don’t act on them.”
“Isn’t that fucked up? Isn’t that such a horrible existence?” Jane goes like it isn’t herself that she’s talking about, like it’s someone else’s gossip and she’s a mere bystander, like it isn't her own soul she’s scrutinizing. “Always wanting something you can’t have?”
“You can,” Nymphia says and it’s from somewhere deep inside herself, something speaking without permission. Something she couldn't stop if she tried. “You can have it.”
Jane looks up at Nymphia. Her eyes are wide and impossibly glassy, almost childlike, almost willing to believe in something like magic. She’s beautiful in the worst way - cruelly captivating, unforgivingly so. She blinks up at Nymphia and does what she does best - completely and utterly perplexes her.
“Can I have you?”
