Summary
One night every few weeks is the agreement; John Marston looks forward to those nights when he and Abigail open up their relationship and go home with separate folks. No commitment, no callbacks - just sex, straight up. This time, though, his luck runs sour in a shallow pool of prospects and John can't help but feel damned frustrated at striking out, and damned distracted by the sandy-haired bouncer that keeps the peace in this redneck, hole-in-the-wall bar that Abigail's dragged him to.
-
The hour between deal and deed crept past slower that it had rights to. Each minute whispered doubt, mockery, and disbelief that there were any tryst pending. John wanted to blame the alcohol for it, but he'd tapped out too long ago for it to be the presence hovering over his shoulder, playing the skeptic.
No, this weird flux in his gut came by the steadily settling and surreal understanding that he'd gone from struck out to striking gold like a lucky bastard. Maybe it ain't with one he would've chosen on his own, being at the bar for employment over enjoyment. But the man'd been pulled from some unknown well of handsome, muscled bastards that John ain't realized he'd a thirst to drink from, but now felt parched without.

Summary
Back alley interludes lead into the chiding reminder that all is not awful when it comes to Arthur Morgan.
-
“I ain’t done nothing,” he supplies, defensive because Arthur knows exactly what Josiah means. He knows and denies it time and again. That leads them to this chiding time and again, but he ain’t so smart as to give in.
The first reply, an arched brow, challenges that as Josiah shifts his grip to tap one finger against his nose. “You’ve done nothing more than allow that steam locomotive of your mind to set upon the wrong track,” comes the correction. Same as the last time, and the dozen times before. The severity of his tone softens, a brief concern taking its place that makes Arthur feel uncomfortably seen and wanted in ways he don’t deserve. “Thinking ‘how ugly I am’ and ‘what a fool I am’ when you’ve no reason to feel either.”

Summary
In the moment, there's no room for reason or sense - not for John Marston. Too often does he live in the moment and now, after a year of running, he returns to face his reality - to face Arthur Morgan and what he expects to be his own death in punishment for leaving the only family that's ever given a damn about him. Adrenaline runs high when his return is met with unexpected welcome from all but the one he needs it from: Arthur.
-
There is no watershed moment, no breaking of the floodgates like when he first returned. Word spreads that John accepted Jack as his son and, by extension, Abigail as his woman and no one much fusses about it. She gives him a dubious look at the announcement, but offers a grateful hug – a visual reunion of two non-lovers all but trapped in their roles.
"You're a damn fool, John Marston," she breathes into his ear, fingers gripped tight at his shoulders.
"Don't I know it," he says, rueful and self-deprecating. And yet it is truth, openly admitted, because who else would go to the things he has for the sake of maybe getting through to Arthur 'Thick-Headed' Morgan.

Summary
Ranchers don't have much time to be corresponding to others, leaving John baffled when an unsigned letter arrives posted to his attention. The contents bring up old aches and promises fractured under the strain of time.
-
John rode back to Beecher’s Hope with the strange letter held in his hand, the postmarks a mess of stations and stops along the way that obscured all but his name written out in dark lines, the penmanship familiar, but-
Rachel moseyed her way to the hitching post outside the porch, habits engrained after almost a year of hard working for sparse living, and the sudden stop distracted him from that. She was a damn fine horse, better than he deserved, to do what needed doing without his prompting it. He scratched at the side of her neck, thanked her for her hard work before he dismounted.
Chores waited for him, but the damn letter kept drawing his eye, so John relented to the temptation and tore open the side, unfolded the sheet to start reading it aloud as he mounted the steps onto the porch, towards the door.

Summary
There's a trick to showing off and a trick to staying alive; Sean MacGuire ain't too good at neither of them and shows it in a grand display of tom foolery.
-
And ain’t it just luck that her warning comes a second too late.
There’s a haughty laugh and he’s ready to counter her, snatching the gun out of the air with ease and grace and completely missing the grip. Sean’s fingers grab haphazardly at it and they all hear the creak of the trigger, the crack of gunfire.
All of a sudden, it’s quieter than a church service and all eyes are on the preacher in the form of the smoking gun. That attention snaps quick over to the target of the unintended sermon and now's when dread fills the air.

Summary
Established Morston, c.1893 and later, that follows these two cowboys through a series of encounters that skirt around their outlaw acts of robbing and thieving. There are light Dom/sub dynamics and bondage themes implied throughout because John is a handsy bastard and Arthur has no patience for being grabbed at.

Arthur spends his days surviving as best he can in the undead-infested remains of New Hanover. Some days, he installs generators and does work on the house. Others, he drinks until he passes out.

Summary
“Morning, Arthur.” Abigail greets him with a soft smile, and he manages a somewhat thin one in response as he sits beside her. There’s something knowing in her gaze and she puts down the yarn, rising to her feet and offering his shoulder a gentle squeeze. “I’ll grab you some coffee.” She offers and he nods in thanks, not quite able to finds words yet.
The view out the kitchen window is gray, the sky overcast and dull. The trees around the barn are dropping the last of their leaves, the golds and reds of Autumn fading to brown and rust. It’s an appropriate reflection of how he feels; worn and brittle and faded.

Summary
A confession prompts a revelation, a robbery prompts an offer, and a request prompts the best night of Sean and Lenny's young lives.
...
Before he could even rethink his words, Lenny’s mouth betrayed him, “I can think of something better to do right now than guard duty.”
Sean swallowed, schooling his features as best he could, “What’s that?”
“Teach me.”Bookmarked by Kichi (sentanixiv)

Bookmarker's Notes
Very strong appreciation of characterization here, both in dialogue and actions; characters are portrayed respectfully and interact smoothly. Lenny's exploration into his attraction and sexuality comes across very organic and the means with which the author addressed period-typical homophobia was light, safe, and comforting without negating its existence. Sean as a partner and then a lover was a bratty, but skilled experience that I think other readers deserve to enjoy. MacSummers is a rare pairing and this is a wonderful depiction of it in terms of attraction, intimacy, and emotion because the declarations of affection are heartwarmingly perfect.
