Summary
The thing about this story is that when it starts they are both already dead. The story ended before it began but we tell it anyway because the ghosts linger long after they’ve disappeared. The story starts with a girl who has everything and a boy who knows everything - the dreamer and the fighter. The story starts with the promise of a life they know they could never have had but they fought for anyway. And you’ve heard this one before, haven’t you? You know how it ends. But you listen anyway, because what if? (The only thing we as humans are good at, I think, is dreaming. Or maybe our greatest talent is self-delusion.) And so the story begins, and you relax in your chair because you always seem to think that believing is seeing, so this one, this one will surely end well.
(I don’t enjoy spoilers, but this whole story is one, so let me tell you the truth: it won’t.)

Avians. They come from an ancient bloodline of winged creatures.
But when they start being hunted down for their feathers proven to have healing properties, they are forced to interbreed with ordinary humans to survive and keep their species - or a mixed species of them - alive. Few pure Avians remain. But they are forced into hiding, prized for their healing properties that are superior to other Avians'...
Avians were born to fly.
But sometimes, they don't - or they can't, for fear of being hunted down and captured...
edit 8/8/24: this is about four years old, lol. i've redone a tiny bit (some obvious grammar mistakes, some extremely clunky sentences, and so on) and am planning to edit that chapter by chapter but i'm not planning to continue it. just a heads up! :)

People see Wilbur as the manipulator, the one who can make people cower and tremble with just a few words. The one who can get anyone to do his work for him, to do what he wants them to without them suspecting that the idea was not theirs at all. The one who can plant thoughts, dangerous thoughts, in someone's head, and can make them question every aspect of their lives that had been certainties before.
This is true.
But they think that Wilbur had taught himself this, that he had learnt from experience and experimentation and instinct.
This is not true.
Phil taught Wilbur everything he knows.

everything flows SO well, esp the dialogue. incredibly funny while also having so much emotion behind it, keeping it more grounded than just a crackfic (dooku. man....). one of the best fics i've ever read, esp considering it's so comparatively short. 100% would recommend. (i wrote a 21 page long comment thread about what i liked in this fic, which tells you how much i enjoyed it HAHA)
