    “The pastor told me to pray for you.”
    Nai’s mouth closes a little tighter. His knuckles are white around the crucifix. Vash just got home from church together with Rem and Alex, who had immediately made their way inside and to the kitchen, if the sounds of pots clanking against each other was anything to go off of. Vash had stayed out on the porch, sat down on the floor opposite Nai’s rocking chair. Alex would've chided him about getting his best pants dirty if he had seen him, but Nai wouldn't tell.

    Vash's brother has been sick for a while. The pastor had said a demon lived in him, making him stray from God’s path. Nai had said it was the pastor who was speaking with a serpent’s tongue, but no one else seemed to agree.

    Vash isn't sure what he believes. All he knows is he used to have a sister, and Nai crawled out of her bloody ashes. Nai says he's a man, so Vash believes him.

    Their town might be small and Vash might not know a lot, but he knows his brother is a boy with the body of a girl, which means this doesn't count. (Or also: Vash is such a good ally it circles all the way around and he becomes the worst, actually)

    "Vash," he said, even though drawing in a breath deep enough to speak hurt so much that he'd almost prefer to be stabbed again, "What did I do?"

    "Back talked. Nobody likes that," Vash lilted. Oh, he wanted to slap him, but he couldn't lift his arm. He stared instead, until Vash's expression went thin and his fingers found Nai's jaw. Even if he hadn't been able to feel the rasp in his song, he'd have known by the tension in his fingertips that his brother was angry with him again. Or not with him - with him. Or perhaps with him after all. "I said not to worry about it, Nai," he said. "And I meant it."

    Knives has been emptied of everything - and that leaves Vash nowhere to put his grief.
