“Steve, baby, I want you to listen to me very carefully. Can you hear me?”
A sniffle and a nod that knocked against Eddie’s jaw.
“Okay. Here it is. What happened to you was awful.” He didn’t let his hands falter in their soothing path even as he struggled for the right words. “Your parents were supposed to keep you safe. You were a child. You needed them to survive, physically and emotionally, and they took that safety from you."
Steve shuddered, and Eddie squeezed him closer. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I’m so fucking sorry that they made you feel unsafe in your own home. In your own body. I wish I could go back in time and steal you away. No one deserves that. I wish the only touch you knew was kindness. Because that’s what we should be to each other, right? We should be kind.”

The thing is, when it comes to prioritizing, Steve is hardly ever at the top of the list. And he gets that - he’s not really at the top of his list, either. He doesn’t need to be; he takes care of himself, and he’s fine. Eddie, however, seems to see things differently.
