Ron froze. It was like everything had suddenly stopped around him, a crystalline quality to the air, the very breath of the stars not daring to move, every bit of light reflecting off of damp branches and bark struck mid-gleam, the soft hoot of a barred owl caught mid note. His heart did not pound. His chest did not rise. Everything, for one perfect and terrifying moment, had either ceased to be or fully manifested every sense of being and life and reality that it would ever experience all in one vivid, sharp, unreal yet undeniably vicious moment. He couldn’t move a limb. He tried to twitch a finger, the corner of his mouth, the tip of his tail, anything, but he was immobilized, a statue in the ever lengthening pools of long shadows stretching out from the bases of the trees, the pads of his hind feet, the craggy outlines of stones and branches and bushes.
And then the pain struck. -

Alright so. Y'all remember how in book 7 Duncan holds the meeting for hibernian kings? My today's take is:
Imagine Sean not being able to make it one year because some urgent problems or something.
And Halt straightbiwalks up to supposed Sean's chair, dramatically drapes himself over it, his ranger cloak exchanged for the most shiny thing with rainbow sparkles and holds Duncan gaze like "well, I never officially abdicated and my nephew asked me for a favour. so let's go bitches"So there you have it. BAMF sassy-as-fuck Halt O'Carrick does his nephew a favor and sits in for him on the Hibernian peace talk Duncan is holding. There are the sparkly rainbow robes. There is banter*. There is spluttering Hibernian royalty. There is manhandling. There is the everpresent, looming threat of the moat.
And, of course, there is gay.*Halt cuts through everyone like I cut through the tumblr bots every morning

The ends of her sweatshirt are grasped in her fists, wrapped around her hands. He half expects her to pull the hood up, tie the strings over her face, and completely tuck herself away. It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.
