He can pretend that he can stay, that Elodie and him were never separated, and that everything is normal and he is good and he will get to keep this. But Jean had died in that fucking basement years ago, and he’s getting tired of forcing his body to keep going. Sure, Kevin had found a way out and made it to college and made a life, but he had a father waiting for him on the outside.
All Jean has waiting for him at home is a set of guardians that are going to be pissed off that he’s failing chemistry and that he didn’t do his chores and that he’s alive.

Kevin stared at his hand for a beat, then took it in his own, “Kevin.”
James’ hands were soft and warm, and Kevin felt something strange and pleasant tingling in his palms where their skin met. He realised he had held on too long and quickly let go, feeling heat flood his cheeks in embarrassment.
Luckily, this James didn’t seem to notice, or he didn’t care. “What brings you here at this time of the night?”
“Couldn’t sleep,” Kevin said, the ridiculousness of it washing over him. He had never had this problem before.
