Spamton looked back on that night with great disdain. It weighs heavily on his soul. As such do the twenty years he spent writhing in the alleys of Cyber City like a cockroach, hated and despised, rejected and dismissed… The memories haunt him like ghosts that refuse to die, keeping the wounds of the past fresh and bloody. That was one night that stuck out in his memory despite many others like it also swimming in the mess that was his mind. Nights of violence, nights of nursing injuries poorly, nights of trying to regain his bearings, nights of the phone ringing despite its cord not being plugged in, nights of hunger pains and starvation and desperation, nights of being subhuman scum pitifully lurking on the streets and merely subsisting, living a violent existence for two decades because The Angel was not merciful enough to end his life. Not for lack of want. He would pray any time his brain was capable of stringing words into sentences into thought. Whether that was praying for power or for death depended on the day.

The first of January is a huge celebration in the Dark World. It doubles as New Year’s Day and her majesty the queen’s birthday. As such, the celebration is as grand and momentous as one would expect, of course. A huge ball, with the finest entertainers and food and booze the realm had to offer. Arguably the most anticipated event of the year for most darkners.
