Chapter Text
Muffet
The eldest of the Spider Clan, a clan that is as old as time itself. The Spider Clan is known for their ability to create the most delicious of treats, but Muffet fell out of love with making them. Rather, she found herself drawn to creating clothes of all kinds, and started her own tiny business that soon boomed in recent years.
Muffet is a villager that lives near the middle of town. You can find her shop after unlocking Grillby’s first meeting, so about Spring 4 (unless you don’t go into town, to which the game will force you on Spring 5). She and Horror are close friends. Horror likes her refreshing ability to offer true advice instead of ‘do what your heart tells you’ as everyone else likes to say, and Muffet adores how happy he makes their Earl.
You can buy quite a bit from Muffet! From bolts of cloth for the crafting hut to actual clothing later in game, it’s quite the pick! The downside is, she’s quite pricey! In fact, to get the cheapest item, it took selling four five star Watermelons at high price (150g each) just to get it.
However, there are ways to get her prices to lower…
Best Gifts:
Silk, specifically spider silk, but a small glitch in the game has her accepting all silks at same affection
Bananas
Red Echo Flower (rare)
Ribbons
At the end of Fall, normally at the beginning of the last week, Muffet proclaims she is going to go and help her clan be transported through the tunnel as they do. The reason she starts now is to avoid the frost. If you ever go through the tunnel, you will notice her surrounded by various tiny spiders, a clipboard in hand.
You are unable to assist, however, and no matter how much you speak to her, her reply ends with ‘But I am quite busy, darling~ Ah hu hu hu~ Perhaps later.’
Her store will be closed, so if you are trying to create something in particular, you will have to be creative on how to find the items you’re needing, or get them during Spring, Summer, or most of Fall.
The only thing you will be unable to find freely is, specifically, Spider Silk, as Muffet (and her spiderlings) are the only ones in ownership of it.
Should you court Muffet and thus marry her, there are a few things that may happen.
With pregnancy, Muffet will gush about your upcoming child. She will ask worriedly how you are doing during Fall/Winter, a little regretful not being at home during this time, but she assures herself she is doing her best.
(You can agree or disagree with her. If you agree, she will brighten up, and state that you always make her feel better. If you disagree, she sighs, and says that she understands your feelings, but as the now oldest of the Spider Clan, she has more duties than the others. She wishes you will understand one day.)
With a child, you get a small dice roll.
Should the child become full or partially Spider monster, they will follow their mother into the tunnel, assisting and learning the customs of the Spider Clan.
As a full, or more human, child, Muffet will teach your child at home, but insist that it is too cold for them to come.
Heart Scenes:
No Hearts/Meeting:
Whether it’s Spring 4 or Spring 5 doesn’t matter. You have to see Grillby’s first heart scene/meeting. Afterwards, you are free to move about. The nearby shop proudly states ‘Muffet’s’ in dark purple letters with spiderwebs draped over it.
She greets you kindly once you step in, and your character jumps. She giggles, asking if you’d ever met a spider monster before. You say no. It’s theorized that Muffet and her Clan are the only known living Spider Monsters left. Skeletons are rare themselves (there’s a small text from Horror about how ‘it’s rare to see another’ in regards to Crop), so spiders, who start off very small it appears, are that much harder to achieve adulthood/majority. Besides Muffet, there is no other Spider Monster in town.
The shop is very beautiful. Various items appear hanging on the wall, spiders march in lines across the dark purple carpeting. Muffet is behind a long table with a register. Her sprite appears...childish in a way. Several small pigtails grace her hair, however, when she appears in the portrait, the pigtails are actually bouncy curls that dangle curiously around her hair. Two twintails drape over her shoulders in bright red ribbons.
She smiles, and asks your name, to which you give it. She laughs again, and invites you in to test out some new clothing.
However, you are unable to change clothing until the end of Spring, for the wedding.
Two Hearts:
Go into her shop at 8 A.M., any day.
Muffet is sprawled across her desk, a squiggly cloud above her head. You ask her what’s wrong, and she peeks up, huffing.
“That skeleton, I swear!” She says, banging a hand on her desk. “He insults my very eyes!”
“...who…?”
No effect on Friendship nor Affection
“CROP THAT’S WHO!” She screams, nearly shoving her stool over to rant. It appears that she gives him a few items of clothing sometimes, but he insults her by becoming dirty, creating holes in jeans, or smelling of chickens and other barnyard animals.
You can interrupt her by saying “But he’s a farmer?” to which she will pause, glare at you, and demand you to get out. No matter how angry she appears, it does not appear to affect your friendship with her.
“I’m sorry.”
No effect
She dramatically places a hand on her head, leaning back in her chair, and starts rambling on how no one appreciates her aesthetic nor do they appreciate fine clothing. At this moment, said skeleton appears, stands for a moment, sweat drops, then backs out.
She wearily asks you to go away so she may stew in peace.
Four Hearts:
Enter Muffet’s store any time of day during a rainy day.
Muffet is near the window with the mannequins. A hand is raised and placed on the glass as she watches it pour down outside. She doesn’t see you at first, but an exclamation point pops up the moment she does. “Oh...hello there.”
‘Hello’
No effect on Friendship or Affection
She nods, returns to her desk. She acts as if nothing’s happened, and you don’t bring it up. This can block you in however, if you are attempting to date her.
‘Are...you okay?’
+5 Friendship, +5 Affection
Yes. Yes of course she is. She shakes her head, a smile appearing on her face as she faces you. She pauses for a moment. The rain, she explains. It makes her sad. You go to ask her something, but she breezes by without another thought.
‘The rain is kind of gloomy isn’t it?’
+10 Friendship, +10 Affection
She sighs, her hand slowly sliding from the glass. Yes, it is. It is extremely gloomy. It makes her want to curl up and sleep instead of work. But then, she smiles, but then she would miss all her wonderful customers. With that she returns to her desk.
(If you are trying to get her and Grillby together, she says something interesting during a rainy day. “There’s someone I know that absolutely hates this weather. Ah hu hu hu~ he’s quite silly isn’t he?” However, since we now know that she dislikes rain, it could be that she worries about him. How sweet!)
Six Hearts:
Exit your home before 10.
Muffet is at your mailbox, and slowly walks away with a skip in her step. In your mailbox you find a bolt of Spider Silk and a note. ‘Don’t spend it all in one place, darling~’
Spider Silk is both rare but not rare in-game. Muffet is the easiest to befriend, considering the way to do so coincides with Horror’s events. Plus, she likes bananas. So, you can unlock Spider Silk in Spring with hardly any effort (if you know where to score the bananas). The thing is, ONLY Muffet has the Spider Silk. So, if you need some but it’s on a day she’s closed, you’re out of luck.
Eight Hearts:
Go to Muffet’s anytime after the 15th of Spring
After unlocking Muffet’s, and the ability to make clothing, many cutscenes open up for you. Here, if you enter when Horror is at eight hearts, you will see a scene in which he is fretting about his wedding attire. Muffet is encouraging him about something, before they both see you. Horror nervously asks you if Crop would feel embarrassed about his hole in his skull, while Muffet argues that he wouldn’t.
“Yes, and I would be too.”
-50 Friendship with Horror, -75 Friendship with Muffet
Horror’s face crumples and he starts to cry, and Muffet angrily orders you to get out if you are going to be of no help. Should you talk to Muffet outside her store, she will coldly ignore you and turn away. If you try to talk to Horror, he averts his eyes, and will mumble. There is no recovering from this.
“Well…what if you hide it?”
No effect on Friendship with Horror, -50 Friendship with Muffet
Horror motions at Muffet, saying, “See? They agree!” Muffet angrily crosses two of her arms, and snaps that he should have nothing to hide. If you chose this, during the wedding, Horror will have a bandage around his skull or a white hat.
“Why would he be?
+50 Friendship with Horror, +100 Friendship with Muffet, +10 Affection with Muffet
Horror blinks and says that he should because…he doesn’t finish his sentence as Muffet jumps in. “Exactly! He shouldn’t!” She happily gushes that you obviously know what you’re talking about, and Horror eventually gives in to Muffet’s eagerness to decorate him without worrying about the hole. Should you choose this, Horror will have just a veil on, nothing hiding his hole. (DLC: due to the surprise event, if you manage to trigger it before the wedding, Horror will have a bandage on his head.)
Now, if you were neutral/good to them, you now open up the ability to date Muffet, or just remain her friend. If you want to start the rival event, it should be now, in order to get them together soon.
Ten Hearts:
This is one scene that differs greatly between Friendship and Dating events.
Friendship:
You MUST see this event before Grillby’s Ten Heart event, if you are trying to get them together.
Go into the forest during the day. Muffet can be seen picking up random twigs, tossing them down with a shake of her head. She seems surprised to see you and crosses her arms. “...do you, perhaps...think it odd that someone falls for someone...that’s not like them?”
“Huh?”
-10 Friendship
Oh, never mind, you don’t seem to understand and she doesn’t have time to explain. She leaves.
“How different?”
-5 Friendship
She flusters and waves her many arms. Does it matter HOW different? They’re just different! She winds herself up so much she screams and stomps a foot before stomping away. Her shop is closed after this, and she seems to avoid you a little until everything is smoothed over.
“It’d be boring if they were like us.”
+10 Friendship
Her many eyes blink in sync. Oh. Oh that...hm. That is...yes, that is quite...quite right. She seems stunned by this, her head ducking as her hand cups her chin.
This part diverges:
If you have not seen any rival events, or were not getting them together, Muffet takes a step closer to you, then another. You look at her questioningly and she extends a hand to squeeze your shoulder. “...thank you.”
Her smile brightens and she leaves, leaving your character blushing.
If you have been working on Muffet and Grillby, she picks up another stick, blushing. “...w-what do you think he likes best?”
You’re pretty sure it’s oak, but help her search for different kinds.
Dating:
Appear at Grillby’s after 5 P.M. (not during Fall or Winter)
The restaurant is strangely quiet, a table with two candles on it. Muffet is dressed quite differently tonight. Her usual puffy dress is a black strapless one, her hair braided down her back. She stutters out a hello, and you sit.
You, the character, start to eat, and it’s fairly quiet. You, the player, get to see something hilarious.
The camera pans from the twosome at the table to where Grillby, Horror and Crop are hiding in the kitchen. Grillby is pondering if Muffet will ever say what she’s meant to, and Horror shushes him, peeking out the door. Crop reminds them that while Muffet is pretty stubborn and scary, she’s still young by Monster standards. Her first real datemate, of course she’s bound to be nervous!
Horror shushes them again.
Back in the restaurant, the quiet builds until, finally, Muffet slams a hand down and stands. “I can’t take this anymore! Look! You!” She points at you, and your character points at themselves. “Yes! D-Do you want to m-marry me or not!”
“Uh...no?
-50 Friendship on all, -25 Affection to both Grillby and Muffet
No no, that’s all the answer she needs. She storms out, an angry cloud over her head, and Crop rushes out after her. Grillby watches helplessly and Horror sadly tells you that you should probably go home after this.
“Of course!”
+100 Friendship on all three, +50 Affection (this might max it out, preventing it from decay)
….wait what. You weren’t supposed to agree! You were supposed to say no so she could be dramatic and storm out into the stormy night! (It’s neither stormy nor exactly night) There’s a laugh from the kitchen which is studiously ignored by both characters. What do you have to say for yourself for ruining her dramatic moment???
A little heart bubble appears above your head, and her face turns darker. She slinks back in her chair, crossing her arms. Very well. She supposes she will marry you. After all, you ruined her moment, you should make up for it.
More laughter.
But you’re engaged, so you’re happy.
Sidenote: surprisingly, this doesn’t actually spring the marriage event! The reverse proposal is actually the same event, and I don’t know why the devs did it this way. But you can still give her a ring later on and she blushes, taking it. Then you’re married within three days.
But this event doesn’t start the process. It just slots you both as fiancées.
Wedding Event:
All wedding events are the same. The only differences are if you wear a dress or tux, and if your fiancée wears one or the other. Muffet wears a long pale purple gown with a fluff around her shoulders, but if you’d like her in a tux, she will show up decked to the nines. Some characters have preferences whereas others don’t mind changing, but it won’t affect anything but how it looks.
When Horror sees you two, he bolts over excitedly. Muffet and he had truly bonded, almost best friends one might say. They hug tightly, two hands cupping his face as she makes him promise to come by and gossip with her. He tells you that you’re invited, and Muffet laughs, saying the only gossip you know is among your barnyard animals. Horror says that the drama on the barn is very exciting, and you all laugh happily.
Rival Events:
See Rival Events (link) for all rival events of each character.
Characters who don’t have rival events: Horror, Crop, Sugar, and Alphys, along with any child character.
Home Life:
Muffet’s spiderlings are helpful little things. She will ask some mornings if you need help. You can choose from the crops or help in the barn, but not the coop. The chickens are naturally inclined to devour them, after all. As you are married, she is happy to create new clothing for you, so long as you bring her the items. This is very helpful if you don’t have the recipe for one thing, but know Muffet makes it. She’s also much faster than the hut.
She and Horror are close friends, and you can catch them chatting in the shop often. During the time of Horror’s pregnancy, and then having his own child, Muffet is ecstatic. She hadn’t seen a newborn monster in quite some time, if ever, and she feels more like an older sister than anything.
Your Child:
It’s a dice toss.
You may end up with a full Spider Monster child, or even three quarters. With this, they will have the multiple eyes and arms that Muffet has. Instead of starting as a spiderling, they have the human body and aging system. However, there’s also the chance of them being completely human. Muffet gushes about the baby whether they be spider or not.
At infant, they sleep in a cradle with tiny spiderlings constantly checking on them. At child age, they walk around eagerly, nearly chasing after Muffet or you. They are quite curious and nothing seems to scare or stop them. Should they be at infant age during Muffet’s Fall/Winter time, she will take them with and bundle them up. However, at child stage, she encourages you to keep them home. They’re much too little in her view to go (when, in reality, it’s most likely hard to keep track of an energetic toddler/child while wrangling her Spider Clan as well).
At teen age, they become curious about the farm like the other children. You can guide them which way you please, and Muffet will encourage them to sewing or cooking as well.
They will become friends with all other kids, including Crop and Horror’s child (or children if you have DLC).
If you have the DLC, there’s a chance to have another child. This child is the exact opposite of the first. If you have full Spider Monster, they will be human.
Update 1.1.5.6: This update opens up a few new places. One of those is the graveyard. If you walk into your home about 4 pm on any weekend, you will find Muffet missing. This won’t start the cutscene, but it will prompt you to start looking for her (this will occur whether or not you’ve had children yet*).
If you talk to any NPC after walking out of your house, they’ll playfully mention how young Muffet is by their standards, and that they’re proud of both of you. The only one who provides a hint is Grillby, who mentions that it’s a shame her parents hadn’t met you. That is all he says, but we can piece things together pretty easy from here.
So, take your character to the graveyard.
The difference between this and other series is that these don’t have headstones. Rather, they look like tiny birdhouses. Muffet is there, cleaning up two of them. She’s a bit surprised to see you, but welcomes you, explaining that one of her clan informed her a branch had fallen and she’d come to fix things.
She explains that these two are her parents, who had died when she was but a little girl. Their dust was scattered “as is Monster tradition”, but they’d also tied in a human one. They took just a little glass vial of the ashes and kept them in these tiny houses, safe from exposure of the elements. She happily informs you of how she had been so alone afterwards, that was, until she made her way to this tiny town.
The townsfolk were so kind and practically raised her alongside the Spider Clan. Even though there are no more Spider Monsters, besides her, it really felt-um, are you crying?
The little sprite of your character quickly objects but she merely laughs. It’s not that sad, honestly. Everyone dies, and while it was unfair for them to pass when she was too young to take care of herself, she did just fine.
This part diverges: if you are not dating or married, she says “I have everyone here, they’re like a family as it is. So stop feeling sorry, dear, ah hu hu~ or I might not make any more clothes.”
If she is with Grillby: “Besides, I have the old Matchstick, and he’s got me. We’re both alone like that, a hu hu~ Birds of a feather, one might say.” This does open you up to asking about Grillby’s parents when you speak to him, however, there’s no cutscene (sadly).
If you are together/married: “I have you, and our little home. I have the Clan. There’s not much more I need, dearie. Let’s go home though. It’ll get chilly soon.”
With that, you both leave, and the day ends without much fanfare.
*Author’s note: why do all the characters just leave their kids at home? Like take your kid with you, they’re like two! What the heck.
