I really, really like how you show the way Kirk’s transient lifestyle affects the connections he’s able to make with people. It’s true that Kurani isn’t a fleshed-out character but I feel like that’s kind of the point! Kirk never stays in one place long enough to really get to know any of the people on a more than surface level, and you really conveyed the loneliness and the longing in that.

Oh my god the way you just left him in the cell except he’s alone and the creature is advancing on him... I want Spock to come rescue him, but the way Jim’s feeling of peace slowly deteriorates into confusion then disappointment and then loneliness and finally terror is so well done. Also, a+ for creating a truly creepy alien race. You’re so creative and the description is so good, I literally felt a shiver down my spine. Now excuse me I’m gonna go read 18k of fluff.

It was so interesting to make Jim’s time on Tarsus IV a punishment for stealing food while his parents were away on a mission—especially as like foreshadowing of the famine on Tarsus. I don’t really see many people giving Jim and Sam the army brat treatment, but you definitely have to consider that as a possibility, since their dad was in the Fleet and we never see any kids on the ships. The complex relationship you hint at between Jim and his dad is definitely interesting.

A/N: This happens between Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock, so it could have been in either category, but Khan is better so that’s where it’s going. It’s not canon compliant with III, but it doesn’t contradict IV at all (because my dad raised me to be fucking respectful). I’m Gene Roddenberry, I own these characters, I do what I want. This one doesn’t have any warnings besides the usual suspects for the M rating, it’s just fucking depressing. Kids don’t read, etc.

I absolutely loved this! It actually reminds me of your earlier fic And Nothing Hurt, because it has the same two things that I loved about that one: interesting aliens and false perceptions (the little details like the blue glow that begins to cast doubt on “reality”...) that lead to a slow disillusionment that the reader feels just as much as Jim does. It really draws you into the story and makes it seem real. (Also I have to admit I’m a sucker for the ambiguous endings.)

I love how creative and original the alien race you invented is, how they’ve evolved out of ever feeling happiness, so they actually have an understandable reason to trap you in your head, living out everything you ever wanted—so they can watch and experience the happiness you feel vicariously. And of course the thing Jim wants most is for Spock and his brother to both be alive!

Wow, you managed to take what’s on the surface a kind of cracky concept and really marry it with the Star Trek context in a way that brings out some really interesting themes. There’s this thread of nature vs nurture, like is this child destined to be warlike because it was created from warlike beings? Or were those beings warlike because the warlike culture taught them to be? And you never really give a definitive answer, which is the way I think it has to be.

But it’s important to ask anyway, because in asking that question, you really expose the fact that the Enterprise’s mission, while peaceful, isn’t one they always live up to. Sometimes they have to enact violence, and even if it’s necessary, it’s still violence. So the answer is complicated, because would even a child from a peaceful species end up more warlike if it had to experience the things the Enterprise is sometimes compelled to do to keep the peace?

And that’s why they have to give up the baby in the end. Because, as you bring up, Spock is descended from warlike people. If they went back in time thousands of years, people might look at him and expect him to be violent, to be a soldier of war. But the Vulcans were able to change through the guidance of Surak and his teachings. They chose to be better. So if raised in the right circumstances, this child could choose that too. But the Enterprise isn’t and can’t be the right circumstances.

And somehow you managed to get all this across in an 8k word humor fic. Sorry this comment is so long, but this oneshot just has so much packed into it. You’re a really masterful writer and I always love reading your work. Can’t wait to see what you do next!

I think it’s really interesting how you kind of expanded on canon to make the katra tied into the regular mind meld. It makes sense because if you can transfer your katra into someone else then it would have to be involved in the ritual somehow. I know you didn’t really go into it, but the fact that it’s canonically possible to survive without a katra makes it really interesting—is the katra what powers the meld in the first place? Like is it an intrinsic part of Vulcans or just what gives their telepathy juice? I know that wasn’t really your point but it made me think.

Ironically, Shatner and George Takei are the only members of the bridge crew cast who DON’T show up. Honesty doesn’t paint Shatner in the best light tho. That was supposed to say “honestly” but I’m leaving it because it’s actually more accurate with the error. This fic is completely stupid and ridiculous. Also, there’s some mention/brief instances of racism and sexism because we know that shit happened, but the characters don’t tolerate it. Once again, I’m Gene Roddenberry, which I’m pretty sure makes this a self-insert fic.

Like, when you kill for the first time when you’re twelve, how can you ever be sure that anyone’s death you cause in the future is truly justified and not just your perceptions being warped by that early experience? Your fics are often gutwrenching or terrifying or hilarious, but what’s so rare about them and makes them stand out is the way they make you think!

The way he knows that all the other transgressions brought up at the trial were either necessary or not his fault, but he can never be sure about this one. And he’s not sure how much that one thing affected everything else he’s ever done since.

I absolutely ADORE how you develop Spock and Jim’s relationship in this chapter. It feels so much closer to TOS characterization, but it still has that slightly edgier feel from Kirk’s personality being affected by his experiences. I think the 2009 movie went very Action Hero with his character, so it’s nice to see that scaled back while still being true to the trauma he’s been through that his TOS counterpart never had to experience. I can’t wait to see how having known each other for years changes the events of reboot canon once you get to that time period.

I love how this one takes an entity from the actual show and really leans into the horror aspect of it. Like that tension of not knowing and the space for your mind to fill in the blanks makes everything magnified. And the way you somehow perfectly capture the feeling of dread that comes from knowing you’re being hunted by something *smart*, but you never see it and you don’t know what it is, all you know is that it’s coming closer. Gah, this is so good! I love your long stuff, there’s so many layers you pack into it. The fact that Jim is alone really amps up the horror, and the way the danger and the solitude mess with him psychologically is really interesting. Especially with how he’s flashing back to Tarsus. A lot of it is familiar, like having to hunt for food while being hunted himself, but on Tarsus there was always someone to look after, someone whose needs he could focus on instead of focusing on the horror of the situation. He doesn’t have that here. And on top of that, he has no idea what happened to Spock, and has so much time to imagine all the worst-case scenarios. Your horror is always really good and legitimately disturbing, but I have to say I’m glad Jim’s not alone anymore. I’m excited to see what you do with Manny, I’ve never read any works by you with a prominent OC before!

O Brother was the closest, but that was more like suspense. I am loving the dynamic between McCoy and Manny, just as much as I enjoyed the dynamic between Spock and Manny. It’s really interesting how they’re both somewhat antagonistic, but they both feel so different at the same time. Spock really GOT that Manny saved Jim and cared about him in a way that Bones can’t because he wasn’t there. And he can’t understand why Jim is still loyal to Manny, even knowing about who he is and his past.

I love how Jim and Spock are still kind of feeling each other out here. Like they know each other, they’re colleagues and on their way to becoming friends, but they still have those moments of disconnect. Like how Kirk knows about Spock’s strength enough to ask if he can lift the anvil by himself, but he’s surprised when Spock doesn’t need as much sleep, or can hear much more acutely than anyone else on the crew. And the slight friction they have over their different/contrasting ways of collecting information. They’re still learning each other! I loved the scene on the bed where Spock opens up, despite how sad it was, because I think they really reached a new level of understanding. Though I am mad that you utilized the fact that their bedrooms share a connecting bathroom for only angst purposes lol.

When people in the progressive faction start dying by what are for them archaic methods, the Enterprise is sent to investigate the situation. Once there, they discover a second element at play—people in the reactionary faction are dying, too: by technological means. And even stranger, there seems to be a familiar face amongst the moon’s inhabitants.

A/N: Usually I don’t reuse OCs, but this one seemed pretty popular, so hopefully some people will be happy to see her again. Warning for discussion of gore and murder.

Wow, this planet is the perfect place for Callista to escape from her old life after the last fic she was in! What better place to disappear than what amounts to an Amish colony within a post-warp civilization? She still has access to advanced tech and doesn’t have to worry about breaking the Prime Directive, but there’s no surveillance and minimal contact with outsiders who might recognize her. Loved seeing her again!

I LOVE the subplot where Callista is trying to lead the serf class in revolt. It’s very Robin Hood. The idea that the Old World shunned technology so that the people in power could stay in power is very interesting. And the way Kirk used his chess/battle tactics smarts to help her plan, while Bones tried impatiently to keep them on track, was PERFECT. I love their friendship here.

At first I was skeptical that this civilization would have developed before their industrial/technological revolution to mirror Earth’s Middle Ages with no cultural contamination. But then I thought of how many similarities there were between the feudal systems in Japan and Europe at the time, even though they developed pretty much independently. So I guess there’s a certain set of replicable circumstances that leads to that kind of political and social structure. It’s not often that a fic makes me think that much!

She’s kind of a man’s idea of a lesbian, you know? a traditionally pretty girl who’s “one of the guys”? Not saying you’re doing it on purpose, but maybe look into why the one WLW character you’ve wrote is this specific archetype? Also, her love interest has no depth whatsoever, kind of seems like you just wanted to write a “girl on girl” kiss. Still, this was an enjoyable read! :)

I guess it could also be considered masochism, because it’s not like Kirk wants Spock to be punching him, but it’s complicated. Pretty much just a PWP with no actual sex. Yeah, they exist. No happy ending (in either sense). I mean, I’m assuming you’ve seen the episode. The title means “little death” in Vulcan (thank you VLD).

I do think a lot about how this moment is the most passion Spock has ever shown toward Jim. It’s the one time that his emotions are clearly visible, the only evidence Jim has that Spock feels anything other than respect and cordiality toward him. This is the first time Spock touches him with passion, and he has no way of knowing it won’t be the last, so it’s understandable that he’d get his wires crossed.

The implications of this along with First Blood, where you had Kodos basically grooming Jim into a killer before he put his plan into motion and Jim saw him for what he was? Chilling

What’s really fascinating to me about this fic is that each of the characters who went to the planet embody some aspect or presentation of trauma. You see some of the same patterns of thought and behavior as you might see in displaced people, or domestic abuse survivors. As an examination of that, this fic does it maybe the best out of any I’ve ever read.

This is so fascinating because it shows the development of Kirk’s inability to let things lie. The most obviously connected example being the infamous space Nazi episode. The Prime Directive is important, and he knows that, but he can’t sit back and let genocide happen when he knows he can stop it.
