Chapter 1: the beginnings

Chapter Text

Mari slowly woke up as the bright light of the sun rising streamed through their windows. Their eyes opened slowly and they knew what was going to happen this day. Everyone knew. The war for L’Manburg’s freedom. Mari was so scared. They knew that L’Manburg wouldn’t win, but they had fought so hard for the land that they had, so they had to try even if that meant dying.

Mari slowly got out of bed, pulled on their clothes, then armour, and any essentials they thought they would need. Weapons, food, arrows, gapples, potions, water, etc. Also, an ender chest so that they could grab anything else they might need in heat of battle. Mari smiled as they saw the flower that Tommy had given them on their first day of the server. It was a pink tulip re-named “Friends”. They smiled and closed the ender chest and went to the back of the room with the ladder and hidden Redstone door. Mari was a very good Redstone engineer, so naturally, their base is hidden in plain view. Right under the black and yellow walls that surround their country.

Mari turned around to see the base that they called home for so long, knowing that it might be the last time they see it again. Mari took one big deep breath and let out a sigh of relief.

“Thank you for always being for me,” they said, putting their hand on the wooden walls. They smiled and went up the ladder, and checked their surroundings to make sure not to get ambushed by anyone. The coast was clear and they hit the button to open the iron trapdoor. At the bottom of the hole was a pool of water. Mari wadded into it, and then pulled out their trident. They took one more deep breath and pressed the button that pushes a block aside to the outside, and they flew straight on out and landed perfectly. They looked back once more at the hole that only they knew was there, and smiled as the piston closed the hole behind them.

Mari started down for Wilbur’s drug van, where everyone agreed to meet that morning. Fighting for L’Manburg was Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, Eret, Fundy, and Mari. For the Dream SMP, it was Dream, Sapnap, George, and Punz. L’Manburg may have more citizens, but The Dream SMP has way more experience and way better resources. Yesterday, Dream gave his famous speech.

“I WANNA SEE WHITE FLAGS! WHITE FLAGS OUTSIDE YOUR BASE BY TOMORROW AT DAWN, OR YOU ARE DEAD!” he screamed at the L’Manburg army. Everyone looked to Wilbur after Dream’s speech was over.

“What do we do?” Tommy asked, scared. There was a pause. Wilbur stood looking out over his land.

“We fight.” He finally said, turning back to the van. “Prepare all you can. We fight at dawn. Independence, or death.” He says as he goes into the back of the van, out of sight from everyone else. Everyone’s eyes were wide. Everyone looked around at each other. Tommy finally spoke up.

“Right,” he gulped, “You heard the man,” . Everyone nodded, all but Mari. They couldn’t understand what Wilbur was saying. They went to go to talk to him after everyone had left the van.

“Wilbur,” they asked, opening the door. Wilbur was sitting on a barrel, head in his hands. “Are you crazy? Independence or death? I know we can’t win this. I think you know that too. Tommy and Tubbo are children! Why are you doing this to them! And Fundy! He’s your son! Why are you putting us through this horror!” they argued.

“I know. I shouldn’t be doing this. But what am I supposed to do? Surrender? I would rather die, than surrender. I would rather fight to the last soldier before surrender! At least we fought for what we believed in! Rather than living in that shit hole of an SMP!” He screamed as he stood up. Mari had never seen him this mad.

“Wilbur? Do you hear yourself? What are you saying?”

“That if you don’t believe in this cause then why are you here.” Mari’s jaw dropped as Wilbur said that straight to their face. Mari started to say something, but couldn’t anymore as they were already out the door.

Mari pushed that memory of the night before to the side. They knew that L’Manburg needed them, even if it meant dying. Mari took one more deep breath and opened the door to the van, to see that everyone was in there, waiting for them.

“Mari?” Eret asked.

“You came back!” Tubbo cheered, throwing his arms around Mari. Mari smiled so brightly thinking that they wouldn’t want them here, but they all hugged Mari.

"Wilbur just told us that you weren't coming!" Fundy exclaimed, giving Mari a hug.

“I’m glad you’re back,” Wilbur said, hugging them.

“Me too. This is my home, and I will fight for it.” They said. But as soon as they said that, an explosion went off on the north wall.

“Where was that?” Tommy asked.

“I don’t know,” Tubbo replied. Wilbur looked out the window and saw Dream, Sapnap, George, and Punz walking into L’Manburg through the explosion hole.

“They’re here!” he told everyone. “Remember. Independence, or death,”. Everyone nodded as they loaded up their crossbows and readied potions. They all headed out the door of the van to meet on the other side of the battlefield.

“Hello.” Dream bellowed, pulling out his crossbow and signaling for the Dream SMP to do the same. But of course, Mari is quicker with their bow and shoots the crossbow out of his hands, pinning into the ground. Dream looks up and smiles at them.

“Well, I was going to give you one last chance for surrender, but know I don’t think I will.”

Wilbur narrows his eyes but then smiles. “Put the next one between his eyes,” he whispers to Mari, as they pull out another arrow from their quiver and ready the shot; Right in between Dream’s eyes.

Dream chuckles. “Boys,” he says, as all of them ender pearl away to one of the towers that they had built in the night. But before Dream could teleport away, Mari let go of their arrow, and they watched as it flew straight into Dream’s mask, cracking it, before he too, teleported away.

“Where did they go?” Eret asked. Mari readied another shot. Everyone looked around wildly, looking for the enemies.

“There they are!” Fundy said, pointing to the cobblestone tower.

“Ready?” Wilbur asked everyone. Everyone smiled and nodded.

“Then what are we waiting for! INDEPENDENCE OR DEATH!” Wilbur screamed as he pulled out his sword and ran for the tower. Eret and Mari then went to the entrance of L’Manburg, to climb the wall to get better shots. Tommy, Tubbo, and Fundy then ran after Wilbur, holding their swords out and screaming.

Eret reached the top of the stairs first, having longer legs than Mari, but they quickly caught up. Both then ran out of the tower towards the tower that the Dream team had built, looking for them. Eret reached his position to shoot from, pulled out his crossbow and shield, and started to fire at the tower, trying to drag them out of the tower, towards everyone on the ground. They were hoping to trap the Dream team and get a quick victory on them. Oh, how they were wrong.

Mari then set up not too far away from Eret, doing the same thing. Pulling out their shield and crossbow. They both watched as Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, and Fundy reached the bottom of the tower and started to climb up the stairs. But before they turned the corner into the tower, Mari saw the glimmer of an enchanted sword from around the corner and fired a quick shot through that corner and it hit its mark. The rest of L’Manburg stopped as they saw the arrow fly past them and into the tower. They looked back up at Mari and smiled and nodded as they turned the corner, ready for anything.

“Wow. I didn’t see that.” Eret said.

“Just got to pay attention,” they said smiling at each other, and then focused back on the battle. Arrows started flying from Eret and Mari into the small windows in the tower. They could see people in armour pass by them and decided to take the shots, hoping it was the Dream Team. But they finally see that Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, and Fundy were pushing them up the tower. Mari smiled as they reached the top of the tower and they were out in the open. It only took a few arrows and a few hits for all of the Dream SMP army to fall off the edge. Mari and Eret watched as each one of them fell to their death. All except for the green man himself, Dream.

L’Manburg screamed out in joy for they had defeated all of them! All but Dream! They had won!

“WOOOOO!” Tommy screamed, jumping in the air and throwing his arms around everyone. Eret and Mari smiled at each other as they came together and hugged.

“Good job!” Mari said. “Come on let’s go meet them!” they said as they started for the staircase. But Eret didn’t follow.

“It’s ok. I’ll meet you guys down there soon! I need to check something. Don’t wait up on me!” he said.

“Ok?” Mari said, puzzled but climbed down the stairs watching him. Eret turned around and looked back to the bottom of the tower where Dream had fallen. Mari reached the bottom of the stairs where the group was waiting for them.

“MARI!” Tubbo yelled as they hugged.

“We did it guys!” they said, hugging everyone. They all piled into one hug but as they let go of the hug, Wilbur noticed Eret wasn’t there.

“Where’s Eret?” he asked.

“Oh, he said that he would meet us down here. That he needed to check on something and so not wait for him.”

“Well, we’d better get some drinks, right?” Wilbur said. Pointing back to the van. They all laughed and Tubbo and Tommy raced each other back to the van, as Wilbur, Fundy, and Mari walked. Once they all reached the van, Wilbur popped a champagne bottle for the adults, so Fundy, Wilbur, Eret, and Mari, and also he popped a bottle of sparkling juice for Tommy and Tubbo. He poured them all a glass of their respective drink, and he made a toast.

“We have won. To Tubbo! To Tommy! To Fundy! To Eret! And to Mari!” He said.

“But most of all,” Tommy added. “To Wilbur!” Wilbur smiled and everyone took a drink as Eret walked into the van.

“Oh! There you are Eret!” Mari said, giving him a quick hug. Eret didn’t really hug them back, but he did smile.

“What were you checking on?” asked Wilbur.

“Well, I’ve been preparing for… the end you could say. For a while now. Now I haven’t told anyone about this. But I could show you all, so we can get some new gear, and take on Dream.” Eret said and smirked.

“Are you kidding me? You’ve been doing all of this preparing?” Wilbur asked, excited.

“Of course! Come on follow me!” Eret said as he led everyone out of the van and to the south wall of L’Manburg. He broke one block of grass, and revealed a staircase.

“What is this lead to?” Tommy asked.

“This is where I hid my base. And… a secret weapon.” Eret replied. Everyone’s smiles widened when he said that he had a secret weapon. Eret was the first to go down the tunnel, then Fundy, Wilbur, Tommy, and Tubbo, then Mari last. Eret gave the grass block to Mari to block the path back up in case Dream found where they went.

“So what is down here exactly?” Mari asked from the back of the group.

“It’s my base. I told you all that I had one, but that was a lie. And I’m sorry for that. I couldn’t risk this getting to the SMP. It would be too dangerous. My secret weapon.”

“What is this weapon?” Wilbur asked as they continued down the staircase.

“You all will see soon enough,” Eret said as he kept going down the tunnel. They finally started to see Blackstone for walls.
