Title Art for Various Stories III

Summary:

Title art for stories that strike my fancy -- if I can find images that match my ideas.

***
Newest chapter is a cover art inspired by an AU Old Guard story -- Though my Soul May Set in Darkness (We Will Rise in Perfect Light), by Knoepfchen.

***
Okay, that does it for this batch of cover art. If I make any more, I'll create a "Title Art IV" post. I have no idea when -- or if -- that will occur; my muse is growing even more erratic than whatever is "normal" for her.

Notes:

My muse has decided to create art for fanfic -- at random, and sometimes before I even read the story. Go figure. However, I can now admit that my photoshop skills are developing, though I still have much to learn. New art will be added when (if) the muse insists again.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: A Bug in Your Ear by SGAMadison

Chapter Text

Background is the sheer rock face of a cliff, rising to a jagged top edge, with just a strip of blue sky above, and an area of flat, barren, rocky ground at the base of the cliff. A pair of heavy wooden doors is set into a slight alcove in the cliff face, a little left of center. Two large, orange-black-blue iratus bugs cling to the cliff face, one to the lower left of the doors, one to the middle right of the doors. Title, ‘A Bug in Your Ear’ stretches across the rock face above the doors, with the ‘A’ and ‘Ears’ dropped half a letter-height lower than the other words.

Title art inspired by a Stargate Atlantis story, A Bug in Your Ear, by SGAMadison.

Chapter 2: We Could Be an Ancient Tale by Mellyflori

Chapter Text

Background is a wide swath of green meadow across the bottom of the scene; a line of dense forest rises behind the meadow, stretching into the blue sky above. The left side is dominated by an ornate castle in pale stone with slate-gray roofs and half a dozen visible turrets, large and small. Only the upper three floors of one wing of the castle is seen, but it fills the picture from bottom to top, from left side to center. Text reads ‘We Could Be an Ancient Tale’ in ornate script, across the forest and back edge of the meadow, to the right of the castle.

Chapter 3: Sha Ka Ree #2 by ThereBeWhalesHere

Chapter Text

Background is an elongated nebula in swirls of pink, orange, yellow, and blue that stretches from lower left to upper right with a bit of starry black in upper left corner. A sheer cliff-face, in tans and grays, stretches from lower left to upper right, meeting the nebula in an uneven, jagged but swooping border. The black opening of a cave shows at the bottom of the cliff, near the right side. The USS Enterprise fills the top third of the picture, partially covering the nebula and top of the cliff-face. Text reads 'Sha Ka Ree', stretching across the bottom of the cliff-face, from left edge to cave opening.

Title art inspired by a Star Trek story, Sha Ka Re, by ThereBeWhalesHere.

I already made a cover for this story. But when I recc’d the story in my Dreamwidth today, my muse decided that my first attempt was too plain and “blah”. She insisted that such a vibrant story needed a vibrant cover. It’s as good a way as any to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Chapter 4: Will You Stay Just a Little Bit Longer? by Bedalk05

Notes:

Not a cover this time; the following 5 images are all internal illustration art inspired by an Old Guard story, "Will You Stay Just a Little Bit Longer?", by Bedalk05.

Edit: 24 hours after posting this chapter, my muse insisted that I make cover art. (She said not a peep until yesterday evening, then suddenly she's shrieking, "Do it now, now, NOW!!!") I've added it at the top of the internal art.

This story ate my brain in the very best way; I fell so hard that I illustrated it and sent it to my iPad. I loved everything about it -- the twins were delightful, Joe as a teacher works so well, and Andy and Quynh as Nicky’s rescuers and great role models are superb. But what I think I liked most was that, as wonderful and engaging as everyone is, the author didn’t gloss over the hard parts. I love how all the threads and pieces are woven together to make such a beautiful tapestry of happiness and love for all the characters. This a thoroughly feel-good, happy-family story; if you’re interested in a non-immortal AU with cute, precocious kids, I highly recommend it. Enjoy the ride; it’s spectacular.

Chapter Text

Background is broad streaks of muted, textured rainbow color, from bottom left to top right. Foreground: A pit-bull dog, gray with white stripe on her face and a white chest, sits just left of center, head cocked, looking at viewer. A black and white cat is just right of center, also looking at the viewer. The cat stands on a kitchen table, which raises her head to almost level with the dog’s head. The table extends off the right side of the page; its top surface is covered with a variety of smeared colors, dried paint left over from childish art projects. Behind the dog, extending off the left side of the page, are two blue, plastic storage boxes. The top box is labeled ‘Amani and Basim’ on the side; the bottom box is labeled ‘Baba’. Text reads ‘Will You Stay Just a Little Bit Longer?’ across the top of the page, above the dog and cat.

A sheet of pale parchment-paper has a scrollwork design in the upper left corner, extending halfway along the top and left margins, and a matching scrollwork design in the lower right corner, extending halfway along the bottom and right margins. In the center is a clear rounded clear glass tumbler, half-full of a yellowish-greenish liquid. Two green mint leaves float on the surface of the drink, a slice of lime has been slid onto the rim of the tumbler, and a cluster of four mint leaves lie next to the bottom right edge of the tumbler. Text reads 'INTRODUCING' above the illustrated drink, and 'The Sparkling Wit' below.

A medium-dark wooden frame stretches across the page, twice as wide as it is tall. The ‘picture’ is a three-line verse in elegant calligraphy, in both English and Arabic. The English verse is in the upper left corner, stretching 2/3rds across the image. The Arabic verse is in the lower left corner, stretching 2/3rds across the image. The ‘empty’ areas to the right of the English writing and to the left of the Arabic writing are decorated with curling scrollwork in a leafy pattern. The verse reads: “Because my love for you / Is higher than words, / I have decided to fall silent.”

A dark polished-wood frame showcases a four-line verse in elegant calligraphy. The verse reads: “You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I'll rise.”

A plain, off-white T-shirt has a large design on the chest -- a cluster of 5 green leaves (broad, pointed, with serrated edges) arranged as a fan, with a cluster of three tomatoes in front of the base of the leaf-fan. Below the design, ‘Legalize’ is written in leaf-green, on a slant from lower left (right side of shirt) to center just below tomatoes. ‘Marinara’ is written in tomato-red, from the middle of the word ‘Legalize’ in a straight line to the right (left side of shirt).

A medium light-dark wooden frame stretches across the page, twice as wide as it is tall; the picture within is a painting of Boccadasse, Italy. On the left, a cluster of pastel-colored (yellow, rose, cinnamon, blue-green, tangerine), multi-story buildings seems to rise directly from the ocean, with just a very narrow strip of land between the water and the buildings; dark discoloration on the lower part of the buildings suggests that high tide covers that part of the walls, and living quarters are above that level. The ocean is very blue-green, broken by dark rocks rising from the water, stretching from just behind the buildings across to the right side of the picture; low turbulance creates white froth around the rocks. Far behind the close buildings seems to be indistinct buildings, possibly on the other side of a bay. Behind them is a range of blue-gray hills rising in the distance, with an overcast blue-gray-white cloudy sky above all.

Two Gay Pride T-shirts are displayed on a plain white rectangle. The left shirt is tie-dyed in a spiral pattern out from the chest, in rainbow colors. A small logo at the right shoulder reads ‘SHS Pride’ in rainbow colors on a white background. The right shirt is medium gray. The words on the front are jagged -- each letter is crooked, and each is a different color -- ‘Can’t Even Think Straight’. A stylized rainbow icon decorates the bottom of each sleeve.

Two Gay Pride T-shirts are displayed on a plain white rectangle. The left shirt is red. A white circle on the front depicts a cartoon of a possibly-Asian warrior woman, leaping into action with long black hair flying, wielding a long katana in front of her body. The logo within the circle reads, ‘Sword Lesbians Will Save the World’. A stylized rainbow icon decorates the bottom of each sleeve The right shirt is black, with two double-bladed battle-axes on the front, crossed like an X. Above and below the axes, ‘I Swing Both Ways Violently With An Ax’ is displayed in red letters. A bisexual-flag icon decorates the bottom of each sleeve.

Two Gay Pride T-shirts are displayed on a plain white rectangle. The left shirt is pale blue. On the front, a childish scrawl of a rainbow curves from mid right side to high left side. Within the curve of the rainbow and stretching down, the shirt reads ‘Started from the Bottom, Now We’re Queer’, each word in a different color. Smaller versions of the childish rainbow decorate the bottom of each sleeve. The right shirt is yellow. On the front is a cluster of lush purple roses. An ornate, jeweled dagger, with amethysts set at the ends of the hilt is plunged through the roses; the hilt protrudes toward the left shoulder, and the point protrudes toward the right hip. The shirt reads ‘Dagger’ above the roses, and ‘Demi’ below. A stylized rainbow icon decorates the bottom of each sleeve.

A pair of black ice skates stands on the ice in front of the afghan. In the middle of the picture, a Galapagos penguin is on his stomach, sliding across the ice, stretching from the right edge almost to the edge of the afghan. A small brown tabby cat rides on the penguin’s back. The penguin’s head is turned 45 degrees toward the viewer, and the cat’s head is turned fully to look at the viewer; she has blue-green eyes. At the left edge of the arch, a giant, flat bluff of red rock rises straight up from the desert floor. Some distance to the right, and closer to the viewer, a tall, massive, tower/pillar of red rock stretches up to seemingly touch the top of the arch. A large open book lies at the bottom left corner of the picture. The top right corner has an image of Sam Beckett in the ‘Imaging Chamber’, wearing his silver leaping suit, arms outstretched, with blue light swirling around him in the process of leaping. Chapter 13: Kurgan by Rainbowagness

Chapter Text

A field of closely-growing sunflowers stretches across the lower third of the image. Behind the sunflowers, to the left, is an old stone farmhouse with a faded red roof, surrounded by trees and bushes. At the center of the image, the trees blend into a wide swath of rough, native grasses that stretch to a kurgan (ancient burial mound), covered with the same green native grasses, that slopes upward, where it hits the right edge of the image before we see the crest of the mound. Over all is a blue sky with streamers of white clouds. Text reads ‘Kurgan’ in the far right sky, above the burial mound.

Title art inspired by an Old Guard story, Kurgan, by Rainbowagness.

EDIT 9/12/22: I wasn't 100% happy with the first cover because I thought the kurgan -- the hill of the burial mound -- wasn't distinct enough. I finally figured out how to fix/change that, and uploaded the new picture.

Chapter 15: My Brother's Virtuous Concubine by Okapi

Chapter Text

An enclosed courtyard, with walkways laid out in a + pattern; they are paved with patterned mosaic tile. The edges of the walkways are lined with knee-high filigreed barriers that enclose lush vegetation -- low-growing leafy plants, with trees rising from the middle of each planting area. Where the walkways meet in the center is a depressed octagonal area. A white marble fountain with a carved base and fluted bowl stands in the center of the octagon. The surface of the water is covered with red and pink rose petals, and a low column of water bubbles up from the center. At the top of the + is a wall inset with an arched entryway. A large, tall mirror is set on the wall farther back beyond the arch; the mirror reflects some of the vegetation and the bowl of the fountain.

Yusuf dreams of a beautiful courtyard, and I couldn't resist illustrating it.

Chapter 16: The Conqueror by Mark Clifton (profic sci-fi)

Chapter Text

Background is a plain, flat tan color, with a large white oval in the middle. Within the oval is a pile of brown dahlia tubers; they look like elongated potatoes. Surrounding the tubers, and partially obscuring them, are four dahlia blossoms in different colors -- red-and-yellow, red, pink, purple. The left, bottom, and right blossoms extend past the edge of the center oval, to cover areas of the tan background. Text reads ‘The Conqueror’ within the oval, curved to follow its boundary.

Title art inspired by a profic sci-fi story, The Conqueror, by Mark Clifton.

This is an old (pub. 1952) short story that I loved as a young teen. I recently recalled it, searched, and found it on the web. Then I just had to save it to my iPad... and then (of course!) I had to make a cover. It’s a whimsical little tale; the language and telling has a sort of fairytale feel, and the story hinges around an improbable "what if". But it's so charming that we're left with a feeling of, "Gee, if only..."

Chapter 17: Fortune's Son by LdyAnne

The foreground, stretching from bottom left corner to horizon-line on right edge, is a paved pathway between wooden guardrails, meandering through lush greenery, slightly above the beach beyond. A pair of palm trees overlook the path on the right side. In the top left corner of the sky is a chest-and-head shot of a smiling Tomas Magnum, wearing a blue-and-white flowered Hawaiian shirt. In front of Magnum’s left shoulder is a head-and-chest shot of a very young Tony DiNozzo, wearing a green polo shirt, with brown hair hanging over his forehead. Behind the limo is a brown-tiled, swooping roof of a building; ‘Maui Tiki Bar’ is splayed across the front eaves in lighted, golden letters. A full moon floats high in the sky above the bar. They are mostly hidden by a character grouping -- A head-and-shoulders view of Tony DiNozzo, face calm, gazing directly at the viewer. Half-hidden behind Tony’s right side is a head-and-shoulders view of Sirius Black; he’s also gazing directly at the viewer, but his image is somewhat faded, as if he’s not totally present. In front of Tony and Sirius, with his head at their chest-level, is a large black dog; he’s gazing at the viewer with both ears pricked up and his mouth open in a doggie grin. Floating in the air, in front of the tree to the right of Tony’s head, is a silver British badge (7 points, with a crown in place of the 8th top point) with the Pendragon crest in the center -- a dragon etched in silver and gold, neck arched, wings open above its back -- centered in a circle of royal purple, with ‘Pendragon’ displayed at the top edge of the circle, above the dragon. At the left is a clump of weeds growing around a large rock, with two scrubby, low-growing evergreen trees behind it. To the right is an expanse of patchy, yellow-brown native grasses leading up the rise toward several scrubby trees growing on the other side of the rise. In the center, from the bottom of the picture to the top of the rise, is a series of patchy bare spots of hard-baked pale dirt scattered with pebbles -- not an actual footpath, but an area of least resistance if one must travel forward. In the foreground are two large swords -- a curved, mid-eastern saif to the left, a straight European longsword to the right. Both are in a non-aggressive position, hilts up, but blades pointing down, almost touching the ground; the blades cross each other to form an X. Text reads ‘All This Time, I’ve Been Hiding’ in the sky above the swords.

Chapter 29: Oxytocin by WouldItWere

Chapter Text

Background is pale gray fitted stone -- a bedroom wall at Hogwarts. A bed fills most of the center -- double-sized four-poster in heavy dark wood, with Slytherin-green valence, side-curtains, and bedspread in a paisley pattern. Head-and-shoulder shots of 8th-year Draco and Harry float next to the top rail and valence of the bed. Draco, wearing a medium-gray sweater/jumper with his Slytherin-green tie at the collar of his shirt is to the left; his head is tilted slightly to the left as he gazes at the viewer. Harry, wearing a charcoal-gray sweater/jumper with his Gryffindor-red tie at the collar of his shirt is to the right; he faces the viewer directly with a calm gaze. Text reads ‘Oxytocin’ above the bed, between the boys.

Note to Readers: This story is currently unfinished -- 36/37 chapters. However, the current ending is not a cliffhanger; Harry and Draco seem to have dealt with their issues and come together stronger than ever. A final chapter would provide a nice bow to neatly wrap everything up, but isn’t necessary for a satisfactory story.

Chapter 30: Though my Soul May Set in Darkness (We Will Rise in Perfect Light), by Knoepfchen

Chapter Text

Background is a row of dark green, dense-growth pine forest, stretching from edge to edge across the top half of the image. A clearing of short, light-green grass and small yellow and white flowers stretches to the trees, across the bottom half of the image. A cabin stands at the right edge of the picture, facing toward the center. It is made of wood, with a covered porch across the front, and a red-brick chimney on the right side; the front door is standing open. Part of a pond fills the lower left part of the picture, just a few yards from the cabin. Two small glass vials, each with a bulbous base, a long narrow neck, and a cork in the top hover between the lines of the title. Text reads 'Though my Soul May Set in Darkness (We Will Rise in Perfect Light)' in 4 lines, across the green forest to the left of the cabin.

Notes:

Note to Guests: I apologize for disabling your ability to leave a comment. But AO3 is being hit by what fans on Reddit are calling the “praise bot” or “nice-comment bot.” Even though the comments are “nice” (although very generic, with no relation to the actual story), it’s unpleasant to get one. As I said in a discussion, The only “payment” authors get on our works is kudos and comments. Getting a bot comment is like being paid in counterfeit money. It’s exciting to get a notice of a new comment -- then to open it and realize it’s a bot is a real sucker-punch.

Regardless of your access for leaving (or in this case, not leaving) a comment, thank you for visiting. I hope you enjoyed the artwork.
