The duty of a guardian

Summary:

The Star Sanses were the guardians of the Multiverse
Ink the God of Creation
Dream the Prince of positivity
Blue the Guard of Justice
What will they do when a new enemy threatens the whole multiverse? Will the Star Sanses be able to defeat them? Or will the multiverse die turning into an ice prison?

Terrible summary but i promise the story is indeed interesting and angsty so be prepared for that XD
Prequel of my project inspired by the Zero Infinity concept by Elena Troitskaya

Notes:

Hi to everyone!
Here we are with a new story I tried to tell kinda from Blue's point of view! It was a POV i never experimented with so it was a bit hard but i am lowkey happy with the results!
I am going to expand this work with others oneshots as actually this is the first part of the prequel for a story inspired by the "Zero Infinity" AU-multiverse by Elena Troitskaya!! I hope you will like this first brief one shot bcs you are going to see so much more of this!

PS. in this ff maybe the characters may not be as accurate as in the past ff- but i hope you understand this project bases itself on the existence of different multiverses so ofc they have slightly different personalities

I hope you will enjoy the story!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: The Duty of a guardian pt.1

Chapter Text

Once upon a time there was a multiverse

Filled with hundreds of thousands of beautiful universes each one of them special in their own unique way

And to guard them all three powerful beings came to existence

The God of Creation

The Prince of Positivity

The Guard of Justice

The three powerful beings together would fight day after day against their negative counterparts

An eternal fight to keep the balance between opposites

Both needed for the existence of the multiverse it was like an eternal dance

Creation and Destruction

Positivity and Negativity

Justice and Corruption

Always one against the other

Perfectly balanced

Until they weren’t anymore

One faithful day a new menace appeared

The three entities didn’t notice it at first, too busy dealing with their usual problems and enemies

The God of Creation was quietly sat in his realm with the Guard of Justice

The two of them were busy over a sketchbook

Blue deeply desired a new armor and let’s just say when creating something new was on the table Ink wasn’t really hard to convince to help

More often than not if creating was involved Ink would self-insert his own persona into the project without really waiting for an invitation

The God of Creation had decided to organize their little meetings in the Doodle Sphere

Blue was quiet relaxed and excited for the projects displayed in front of his blue eye-lights

Eventually his sight shifted and landed on his friend who was excitedly chattering to both him, himself, none and the whole multiverse at the same time as he worked on the current task

The mere sight made the royal guard smile

Ink was so cheerfully chattering and adding details, colors, adjustments and ideas in such chaotic innovative way

The usually always distracted skeleton was so uncharacteristically focused whenever he was creating something he deemed important the sight was as unusual as endearing

Blue knew Ink didn’t have a real soul, or at least it wasn’t considered as such by most of those who were aware of this peculiar feature of his

Using vials to feel emotions wasn’t exactly something conventional and it was deemed by most as a cheap replacement

The Guard of Justice thought they were wrong

Who were they to decide what was the right way to feel? What was genuine and what was fake?

Ink may have no soul

Ink may lack of empathy

Ink may be blunt and oblivious

Sometimes he may even be cold or cruel

His lack of conventional soul didn’t excuse his actions, but it didn’t make him a soulless object either

Whenever Blue had the chance to see the other skeleton so absorbed into his art he couldn’t stop himself but thinking that such passion and endless curiosity couldn’t be created by some random mix of paint

He knew it was genuine, he didn’t care what others may think or say

Or at least that was what he liked to think

He always tried to think the best of pretty much everyone

Believing that Ink was genuine was to his eyes a much preferred option than despise him for something he actually had no real control over

He liked to think his friend was real

Maybe he was one of the most real and honest beings in the whole multiverse and that was what made lots upset

The knowledge that a soulless entity could be more real than all their souls together

Blue decided to take a break from reflecting on his friend’s peculiar nature to simply take some time to admire the majestic place they were in

The Doodle Sphere

The royal guard always felt such indescribable wave of awe and subjection whenever his mind would try to wrap around the immense magnitude they so carefully guarded

Ten of hundreds of thousands of universes floating around him reminding him of how tiny and insignificant he was

It didn’t bother him, it kept him humble, it reminded him where he came from

Even if he was a well-known member of the Star Sanses, respected, recognized and appreciated across the whole Multiverse he knew at the end of the day he was just a simple royal guard

One of the best and most amazing royal guards for sure, but still a simple Sans from an AU that even if beautiful had nothing special if compared to all the others existing around him besides being one of the first being created

That knowledge didn’t fill him with uncomfortableness or sadness or envy for his much more powerful counterparts

On the contrary he felt himself filled with even more determination on doing good

He felt so honored at the thought that between all the AUs that surrounded him in that moment, he had been deemed as the worthy of being a guardian of the multiverse

He felt thankful for the chance Fate gave him

He felt lucky whenever he would look at his best friends, a Prince and God, two entities so superior that never even thought of looking down upon him, always treating him as an equal

He was glad for the opportunity he had to prove himself and to be able to give his contribute to keep peace in the multiverse

Blue kept smiling and admiring all the AUs until he noticed the Doodle Sphere had gone strangely quiet

The Guard of Justice looked back down to his friend thinking maybe the other had asked him something while he wasn’t paying attention and was waiting for an answer

What he saw somehow made him feel uneasy

Ink wasn’t anymore looking all excited to the armor projects scattered around him, his hand was still casually doodling over the paper in an automatic motion, but his eye-lights were fixed curiously on something distant

It was unusual for the God of Creation to space out, or at least he usually didn’t while he was busy creating something

“Ink?”

Blue attempted to call out for him, but the other ignored him

He frowned as he tried to stare at the same point his friend was, but he couldn’t really see anything aside lot of AUs as in every other direction of the Doodle Sphere

Starting to get a bit worried Blue got closer to Ink noticing his eye-lights, even if not white dots, looked dimmer than usual

It didn’t make the littlest sense, he knew the other had taken his paints earlier that day so he couldn’t be running out of them already

Eventually Blue got closer and gently placed a hand on Ink’s shoulder

The other didn’t really jerk, he simply blinked a few times his eye-lights changing color and shapes for a good while until they finally settled in an exclamation and question mark as he turned to Blue

“Oh hi Blue- when did you get here?”

He asked chuckling as he took a sip of yellow to show his happiness seeing his friend there before slightly adjusting his scarf as he waited for an answer quickly growing distracted again

Blue patiently sighed

“Ink you invited me here remember? You were helping me with the design of my new armor”

Ink kept blinking curios and chuckling as he looked at him, then at the sketches and after a while he finally nodded as something clicked in him

“Oh right- I was thinking to add-“

Before the other could lose himself in another creativity rush Blue interrupted him

“You were staring at that point, did something happen? You looked a bit off”

He said pointing to the exact spot the other was staring just a few moments earlier

Normally he wouldn’t interrupt people, but he knew Ink and knew better than just wait for the other to finish his blabbing about art as it could potentially be an endless speech

Short phrases, go straight to the point, that was the best way to talk to Ink when you needed him to focus

If you tried to sugar coat things or take too long to explain something his short attention span would make him distracted and he would either ignore you or forget what you were talking about forcing you to explain it all over again

Ink needed direct and clear information so that was how Blue went with

Even if this strategy usually worked, this time the God of Creation looked just confused at him

It was normal for Ink to forget what he was talking about even mid-phrase, but the fact that he couldn’t remember something so recent even after being specifically prompted was again really unusual

“Did Error destroyed some AU?”

Blue kept insisting, but after taking a few sips of lights green and giving his friend his best thinking look, Ink simply shook his head before shrugging his shoulders

“Maybe I simply spaced a bit out“

He said not really worried by his own behavior as he checked his scarf before shaking his head

“I didn’t write anything down so I guess it wasn’t really something important”

Blue glanced a few more times to Ink and then to the spot the other was staring at

He had a bit of a bad feeling regarding what was going on, but probably he had just been spooked by his friend’s weird behavior, it wouldn’t be the first time

“What if we make your epaulettes shaped like mini Gaster Blaster?”

Ink suggested chuckling making Blue break laughing

“Well- they indeed seem appropriate for the great Blue! MWEH HEH HEH!”

It was late and the Guard of Justice and Prince of Positivity were in an AU with a medieval theme

The two of them had been helping setting up a festival to celebrate the new peace established in the AU after they solved all the issues the King of Negativity and his gang had been causing around

Technically Ink was supposed to be there helping them too, but he had briefly left to pick up some decorations he had created earlier on that day

That had been around 3 hours earlier and Blue really doubted his forgetful friend was ever going to be back

He was at least thankful Dream was with him to teleport him home when they had finished and he hadn’t been left in a random AU with no way of leaving by Ink … again

“Blue, are you sure the monsters of this AU are going to enjoy tacos?”

Dream asked as he glanced to the food the other was preparing

It wasn’t exactly typical of that AU, but Blue knew to that point the timeline was screwed up enough nothing they did really mattered anymore

“Of course they are going to enjoy them! I mean the magnificent Blue is the one cooking! And I am not alone, I even have the help of the Prince of Positivity himself”

He reassured the other who huffed playful, his small smile able to instantly brighten the whole room

“Well- if we have to keep up our reputation we better do a good job right?”

Dream asked eyes filled with determination as always as he gained an excited grin from Blue who nodded

The two of them started working and working for hours and hours until everything was nicely settled and ready for the festival

Both of them were exhausted, but also satisfied of their work

“I will just take these to the back so the local Sans can pick these up tomorrow morning and bring them to the center and then we can leave”

Dream said as he picked up a few boxes filled with the decorations and food they had made for the festival

Blue nodded to his words as he would just finish cleaning some of the mess they had done while preparing the tacos and then he would follow his friend

It really only took a couple of minutes, the royal guard stretched himself and moved quickly to the exit as Dream was probably already waiting for him

As he rushed out he didn’t notice the figure standing still as a statue and he ended running into him

Him and Dream fell both to the floor, Blue immediately got back up and was going to help his friend but ended frowning slightly as he noticed the other had dropped something

It was the box he had taken out several minutes earlier

“Dream? Is everything alright?”

Blue asked confused and as he saw how his friend was still looking up to a no-specified point in the sky he got quiet worried

He remembered Ink doing the exact same thing, it wasn’t weird for the God of Creation to act weird, but this kind of behavior was much more unusual by the Prince of Positivity

“Dream?”

He insisted again as the other finally seemed to snap out

“I- sorry Blue”

The other apologized but any trace of the happiness previously present had totally disappeared as Dream kept frowning and glancing to the sky, his own arms slightly wrapped around himself as if he was cold

“I just … there is something off”

He commented as he kept glancing up, Blue tried to follow his eyes, but he found once more lost as he couldn’t see anything at all but the stars peppering the night

“Off like Nightmare attacking an AU?”

Dream frowned more as he shook his head

“No, not that kind of off … is just … “

His words trailed off carried by the wind as Blue tried to understand what he meant and why he couldn’t sense whatever both his friends did

Trying to offer his contribution he told Dream what had happened with Ink a few days earlier

He had at first dismissed it as the God of Creation having a bit peculiar behavior as always, but now that the Prince of Positivity was feeling off as well so maybe there was actually something much more serious going on

Dream took the information and nodded, his expression serious and focused

“The best we can do is go and find Ink to discuss the matter at hands with him hoping he will remember something. We will need to investigate this, even if is just a coincidence I don’t want to risk something passing under our radar”

The Prince of Positivity said as Blue nodded to the directives

Even if Blue was technically older and Ink stronger, Dream was the undiscussed leader of their group

The God of Creation was by far too distracted and forgetful, while the Guard of Justice simply thought his friend had much more leadership and authority so gladly let him the role

The two guardians quickly picked up the decorations that had fallen from the box earlier on and left immediately after

They needed to get at the bottom of this as soon as possible

Blue followed Dream, portal after portal

Ink seemed impossible to find

They tried to spill ink several times in several AUs, but the other didn’t show up

The Guard of Justice had the temptation to curse under his breath as never before as in that moment he regretted his incapability to create portals across different universes

If he was able to do so him and Dream could split and cover a bigger area in less time

They were back in the Doodle Sphere, Dream pacing around trying to create some sort of plan

Blue looked around, he knew keeping jumping from universe to universe was useless

They were surrounded by so many AUs and the royal guard knew what his eye-lights saw was just a small fraction of all of them

No, they needed to come up with something much more efficient

Blue was starting getting really worried, Ink was forgetful and distracted but not to this point

Maybe something bad happened to him? But what could have been? Ink knew to always warn them whenever he engaged a fight with either the Destroyer or the King of Negativity and his gang

Blue kept scanning the AUs as if they could somehow speak and give some, any indication about the whereabouts of their main protector

And they indeed did

“Dream, look!”

Blue said catching the other’s attention as he pointed to a particular AU

It was quiet far from their position, but it nearly looked as if the others around it wanted to distance themselves from it as much as they could

The two friends immediately teleported there

“Is … is freezing”

Blue muttered lost as the edge of the paper was somehow turning into ice and that same ice was slowly but gradually expanding across the whole surface

It didn’t make the littlest sense, he had never seen or heard about anything like that

In their paper form all the AUs looked exactly the same, they didn’t have any peculiar aspect that could help you distinguish one from other, you could only do so by checking their data

Blue saw how his friend frowned

“I can’t sense any emotion from there”

He said seriously

A simple exchanged glance was enough for Blue to know to get ready for a possible fight with an unknown threat as Dream opened a portal for them to enter the AU

Once they were inside the AU the royal guard’s eyes widened to the sight

They were on the surface, but it was hard to notice as the sky was dark and void of any star

It was so cold Blue natural’s instinct was to curl slightly in himself trying to keep some warmth as he adjusted his scarf

He turned to his friend to see Dream shining in a soft warm gold light as if his own aura had suddenly turned visible

The Prince of Positivity seemed surprised of it as well as he looked puzzled to his own hands and arms as he kept emitting this soft light

A little warm star shining in the darkness

They exchanged again a brief glance before Blue moved closer to his friend to try keep some warmth and they both quickly got deeper into the AU searching for their missing friend

As they walked it seemed to get colder and colder, darker and darker

Blue felt more and more uneasy as the darkness seemed to get thicker and thicker so much that breathing itself was becoming an unusually challenging task

Just to be sure the royal guard decided to summon a couple of bones noticing with the corner of his eye-lights that Dream must have had the same idea as he had summon his arch as well

The two kept walking and walking in total silence wary of their surroundings at any moment

And then Dream stopped Blue on his track as he pointed at his right

There Blue saw some weak colorful shine

They both immediately recognized it as Ink’s vials but were still cautious as they got closer

What Blue saw wasn’t what he was expecting

It was indeed his dear friend’s vials the source of such light, but he seemed in a distress he had never seen before

“Ink- what is going on?”

Blue heard Dream ask as they both finally ran to their friend stopping on their tracks as they saw how ice was climbing up on Ink’s leg

Blue was frozen in place while the Prince of Positivity was the first to react as he used his magic to melt the ice and free the God of Creation

Dream who looked concerned started checking on Ink, but Blue noticed how the ice that had been easily melted had reformed itself again and was quickly moving as if to catch them

“We have to leave, now!

He warned his friends as immediately Dream opened a portal for the three of them to be safely back to the Doodle Sphere

Blue was thankful for the lack of a proper floor that avoided them to crash against it as they fell in a quiet ungraceful was from the portal

Quickly the royal guard focused on his friends and moved closer to them

Ink seemed particularly upset, which was quiet concerning considering he usually could decide on which emotions act on thanks to his vials

Blue tried to comfort him as he rubbed his back in a soothing way, the younger indeed laying slightly to the touch

The royal guard would have liked for Ink to rest a bit, but the Prince of Positivity disagreed and eventually Blue decided to follow as always his lead

“Ink, can you try tell us what happened?”

The royal guard kept soothingly rubbing his back as Dream attempted to gently coerce their friend into speaking

After some minutes Ink seemed to be back to his senses, Blue quietly observed as he took some sips of white to wash out every feeling that could cloud his mind

The royal guard knew how much his friend hated drinking white avoiding it as much as possible

His whole body tensed at the implications of such drastic measures, if Ink really was so determined on not having his feelings distract him the matter at hands was much more serious than what they had originally expected

Dream must have thought the same thing as he immediately straightened his back when the God of Creation started drinking white

“A new AU had appeared … I just wanted to help the Creators fill it as usual”

The blank skeleton started, his monotone voice echoing in the Doodle Sphere in a way that sent chills down Blue’s spine

“But once I got there and started creating … it got cold … so so cold … I thought it was simple a snow-themed AU or something like that, but then it got worst”

Even if technically totally devoid of emotions Blue would have sworn that there was an undertone of fear in his friend’s voice

“The ice around me started moving, it moved fast, much faster than what should be possible. It started freezing all my creations. I tried to free them, but the ice would climb up my brush”

Blue had never heard of something like that, what kind of AU was even that? Of course sometimes the inhabitants would be hostile, especially in the most violent universes, but never an AU itself directly attacked the God of Creation

After all he was there to help the Creators, why would they ever harm him if he was there to help, when it was his duty to do so?

“Did you try opening a portal?”

Blue heard Dream asking, his tone not accusatory at all as he was simply trying to access more the situation

“I tried, but my ink would instantly freeze”

That was unheard of, how could even a portal through dimensions even freeze?

After that answer there was a long silence, Blue helped Ink drink once more his vials in the right order before looking up to Dream, the two of them waiting on instructions on how proceed

“We won’t step again in that AU, the best thing we can at the moment is simply wait and keep it checked. We can just hope it was simply a strangely hostile Creator, I know it doesn’t make much sense, but for now it is our best bet”

He dictated

“Blue, I’ll take you back home now. If anything happens we will come pick you up”

The royal guard nodded to his words, he was indeed exhausted and for how worried he could be about what was going on he also knew there was nothing they could do at the moment

“Ink, remember to not try go again in that AU”

Dream insisted knowing how curios and forgetful the other could be

After having drunk all his paints Ink simply gave him a sheepish chuckle

“Trust me, I didn’t know I would have ever felt like this but I want to stay as far away as possible from that place for a while … look, I have even written it on my scarf!”

He exclaimed looking quiet proud of himself having noted it without anyone telling him to do it

The other’s excited words made Blue smile and he knew Dream had just an equally fond expression as the two of them turned and left

Some time had passed by and everything seemed to be back to normal, but the incident never really slipped from Blue’s mind

Even if everything seemed normal he had started having a really bad feeling regarding the whole situation and he knew his friends were feeling the same

Blue tried to keep himself distracted as he baked some tacos to share with his friends, when suddenly a portal opened under him

“What-“

Before he could properly react he fell through it, he silently thanked his quick reflex as he got to land on his feet

“I am sorry Blue, but this is an emergency”

He heard Dream say, as soon as he turned to face his friend he froze on his track to what he was witnessing

There were at least a dozen of AUs that were slowly freezing in front of them

“What happened?”

“I don’t know! This thing is affecting all the AUs like a disease”

Blue looked how Ink was clearly distressed for such quick loss of universes and immediately moved himself to help them trying to stop the spreading of the infection

Dream’s magic seemed by far the most efficient in effectively melting the ice, whereas Ink and Blue did their best to destroy the biggest chunks

They kept doing it for a long time, but Blue knew they couldn’t go on forever

Dream seemed to start getting tired for using so much of his magic, Ink was more and more in distress and the infection wasn’t disappearing or slowing down, it would actually come back to the ‘healed’ AUs as soon as Dream moved a bit too far from them

“We can’t keep going like this”

Blue said and his friends clearly agreed, but both of them also refused to stop

“We need help”

He continued

He had an idea of who could help them, but at the same time slightly feared saying it aloud

“Could we try … ask Error and Nightmare to help?”

Silence followed his words

Ink quickly sipped some light cyan to show his shock

“Bring here the God of Destruction himself? You know I am always up for crazy plan, but this is too much even for me”

Ink said and Blue knew how uncomfortable he was with the idea of bringing the Destroyer in the place they had fought so hard to keep him out of

“What other options do we have? Nightmare and his gang could help us trying to break and slow down the ice for the sake of negativity, but we need someone able to shatter the AU that started this all! I could try and convince him”

Blue insisted, he knew it was a crazy plan, but he liked to think the best out of everyone and hoped that their enemies would understand the gravity of the situation and actually help them for once

Ink still seemed unsure about it, so both of them turned to Dream who was going to have the final word

The Prince of positivity looked at his own hands glowing in warm light and then back to the frozen AUs

He took a deep breath

“We can try”

The others two simply nodded as they immediately went to convince their counterparts to help

It didn’t go at all as Blue had planned

He had faith the others would understand

They didn’t

The first they went to was the God of Destruction himself

His expression was totally unimpressed when they explained what was going on

“And I should help you because?”

“Error, this thing is affecting the whole multiverse we don’t know what effects could it have on the long run, we need your hel-“

“You need to shut up”

The Destroyer snapped to the Prince of Positivity

Ink immediately reached for his loyal Broomie to start a fight, but Dream stopped him holding gently his forearm and shaking his head

Blue knew it wasn’t worth it, but he himself felt uncharacteristically upset with the Destroyer who had clearly no intention to help them and had indeed passed all the time just teasing and pushing Ink at the edge

“You do realize my goal is to destroy the multiverse right?”

“And would you let this ice disease take such pleasure from you?”

Dream clearly tried to use the other’s ego to make him help them

Error seemed to actually think about it before huffing laying back down nonchalantly on his string hammock

“No I wouldn’t”

“Well- then get up and-“

“That doesn’t mean I am going to help you squid”

He interrupted the other with a cheeky grin

“You are the protectors of the AUs not me, I am sure you will figure out some way to fix this mess eventually”

“Error, you-“

One of Ink’s eye-lights had turned into a red cross, but once more Dream stopped him on his tracks

They couldn’t waste any more time

“Fine, we’ll leave then”

Blue heard Dream saying diplomatically as always and he really could do nothing but admire the patience their leader always showed

As Dream moved a bit Ink to a side to calm him down before leaving, Blue approached Error

“You didn’t have to be so mean you know? Stop teasing Ink he is already enough upset”

He scolded the other as he wasn’t in the mood to be patient with the Destroyer’s crap

“Chill Blue, you are becoming as stiff as the Goldy back there”

He huffed rolling slightly his eye-lights

“And you know me- making that squid with goldfish memory upset is amusing, so get a move on with fixing the problem, is been a while since we had a nice fight and you know it is my favorite second hobby”

“Second?”

“The first is Undernovela, now stop pestering me and go back to your friends. The new season will come out in a few minutes”

He said dismissing an irritated Blue with a swift movement of his hand

Before the royal guard could do or say anything else he heard Dream calling for him

He eventually sighed heavily sparing a last disappointed glance to the Destroyer who ignored him before he finally left

Blue wished he could say things with Nightmare and his Gang went better

Unfortunately, they didn’t

If talking with Error had been frustrating, dealing with Nightmare had been absolutely humiliating

The King of Negativity nearly laughed at their face when they asked for help, his gang surely did

Blue wasn’t even sure he really wanted to hold Ink back when Nightmare started verbally attacking his brother

He felt such frustration and helplessness as he just watched Dream endure the insults, the mockery and humiliation

Brave, Compassionate, Proud Prince of Positivity full of such power and grace ready to humiliate himself for the sake of the multiverse without any hesitation

It wasn’t enough

It would never be enough

Not for someone so blinded by their own greediness and rage as Nightmare

“You have always been the golden perfect little prince between us. Always perfect, always brave, always innocent. Prove your pathetic theory that good always wins against evil, go and do your duty and stop wasting my time”

Dream had to humiliate himself to the point of begging Nightmare to get anywhere

In the end, amused by what he considered a show as pathetic as entertaining, the King of Negativity said he would avoid attacking AUs until they solved their mess but wasn’t going to play breaking the ice with them, not him and not any member of his gang

Blue knew they were not going to get anything else from them

Bitterly he could do nothing but glare to the mocking crew as he helped Dream dragging Ink out of there

Once upon a time there was a multiverse

Filled with hundreds of thousands of beautiful universes each one of them special in their own unique way

And to guard them all three powerful beings came to existence

The God of Creation

The Prince of Positivity

The Guard of Justice

One day it started turning in cold ice

The three entities tried to seek for help

But nobody came

They didn’t give up

They would save their multiverse even if it was only the three of them against Fate

The three guardians of the multiverse had found their way to the first universe that had suffered the infection

Blue observed quietly the totally frozen paper

The coldness it radiated was impossible to describe

It was the kind of coldness that sinks deeply in your bones and doesn’t leave you alone doesn’t matter how many layers of fabric you could try put on them

It was the last universe any of them would have ever wanted to find themselves in

But they had no choice

If they wanted to stop this disease they had to destroy it from its very roots

“We have to stay together okay? No solo missions, this is probably the greatest menace we have encountered up until now. We get in, try to get at the source of this ice storm and stop whatever it is causing it”

Dream said as serious as Blue had never seen him before

The royal guard and Ink could do nothing but nod

They had to stay together and especially stick to Dream as his portals were the only ones that actually worked in that iced place

Everyone had already their weapons out and ready

A last exchanged glance and then Dream opened the portal and they were in

What they met inside was so much worse than what they remembered

A strong violent wind so harsh it seemed to be biting their bones

Everything was dark

The air was thick and cold

Blue was sure that if he had actual lungs he would have already them frozen

The only light in the darkness were Dream’s whole figure, Ink’s vials and their eye-lights

Blue had a goal in mind

He couldn’t do much but break the ice

Their best bet was Dream being able to face whatever was causing this mess thanks to his magic or, how they have recently found out, use Ink’s warm colored vials in an extreme case

Blue was going to make sure to keep the other two guardians safe

It was his duty as a guard to do so

It was his duty as the older one to do so

It was his duty as a friend to do so

With those silent promises in mind, they got deeper and deeper into the cold storm

Blue did his best

He really did

It wasn’t enough

As they got to the heart of the storm what they found was a shadowy figure

It was so dark Blue couldn’t identify any of its feature but the fact that he was a skeleton just like them

Was he the Sans of this universe?

Of course there were Sanses from AUs drastically different from the original

Ink and Dream were clear examples of it

But this was unheard of

The shadow immediately started attacking them

He wasn’t sure if his intent was to kill or freeze them

Both options seemed equally unpleasant to his eye-lights

Blue did his best to keep the others two on sight and as he did his best to break whatever ice attack in their directions with his bones and Gaster Blasters he soon realized the shadow wasn’t really targeting them

It was targeting Ink

A long battle followed as the shadow did its best to separate them

It knew they were much more vulnerable if apart

He tried to get to Ink time and time again

The God of Creation was fast and experienced thanks to all the fights he had endured up until that moment

But this was different from anything they had ever faced before

The shadow merciless attacked Dream and Blue himself not caring of the damages he made, but at the seemed to only want to immobilize Ink

“We have to get Ink out of here”

Dream tried to open portal near Ink whereas Blue fought against the ice attacks using every bit of magic to do so

Soon enough the shadow stop trying to actively get to Ink and focused on the couple of friends and pulled them apart

Blue for a few instant thought the figure was tired as he didn’t move for a good amount of seconds

He tried desperately tried to catch his breath before he noticed the shadow staring at Dream’s glowing aura that was melting the ice around them

In an instant the dark skeleton sent an ice attack to Ink who had his long scarf stuck and couldn’t dodge while at the same time quickly teleported in front of Dream wrapping his hand around his neck and lifting him up

The royal guard didn’t even have any idea that thing could use magic outside his ice powers

Blue found himself frozen, everything moving in slow motion as he couldn’t decide which of his friends help

He needed to take a decision, fast

But it was in impossible for him pick who save

He had nearly no magic left

He was hurt

He was exhausted

He was cold

So cold

But then with the corner of his eye-lights he noticed a faint red and orange glow from Ink’s hands

With that he made his decision as he used all the magic left in his body to evocate a Gaster Blaster and shot directly to the figure that was holding Dream with all his strength

The Prince of Positivity fell to floor and Blue tried to drag himself to where he was

He horrified saw how Dream sat up holding his neck that was quickly turning in ice

Blue didn’t think he could ever forget the expression on his friend’s face as he realized it wasn’t stopping

It was expanding

Fast

Very fast

That ice seemed different from the one the figure had used to attack up until that point

It was quickly expanding ignoring the Prince of Positivity’s aura and embracing his body bit by bit

Blue’s legs didn’t seem able to sustain him, it didn’t matter if he tried to get closer to his friend it was too out of reach for his exhausted body

What pained him the most was when Dream looked at him and Ink’s screams from behind him

Before he could even rationalize what was happening he saw one last gold warm glow from Dream’s iced hands

And then he was falling through a portal

Everything turned black

When Blue came to his senses everything he could sense was pain

He was sure he had more than a couple of bruises

As he tried to sit up with a pined groan he checked on his body

Both his legs had several cracks and a couple of his ribs were totally broken

At first he didn’t totally remembered what happened until he looked up in Doodle Sphere and was met with the iced universes

What he quickly noticed was that the infection had stopped

The frozen universes were still frozen, but they didn’t emit any kind of coldness anymore

The ones who were just half frozen stayed like that as if time had stopped

He should be happy

They had made it

But as his eyes fell on the golden apple in front of him he could have sworn he felt his soul shatter

They had won, but Blue felt as if everything was lost

 …

He had somehow made it to Ink’s house in the Doodle Sphere

He wanted to just break down and cry and he was surely going to do so soon or later

He always scolded Dream for bottling up his feelings it would be hypocrite to do the same

He just needed to get somewhere safe

Somewhere familiar

Somewhere with some traces of warmth

Blue could have gone to the guest room where he would sometimes sleep during long missions

But instead he decided to lay on the couch

The couch they had spent so much time together it didn’t matter if it was watching a movie or planning something

He climbed on it the Golden Apple Dream must have sent with his last energies in his hands

Even at the very end the other had been a true guardian

Instead of trying saving himself he had given up the Golden Apple for the sake of positivity

For the sake of the happiness of the AUs

Blue had no idea of how he did it and he didn’t really want to know

His head ached too much to think about it

The royal guard curled on a little ball, wrapping the blanket Ink had made around his broken frame and cradled the apple as close to his chest as possible

He let himself fall apart as thick tears streamed down his check-bones

His sobbing was the only sound echoing in the Doodle Sphere

Blue had respect for his own grief

He didn’t try to stop the crying he just let it all out until he was too exhausted to keep doing it

Having the source of happiness itself in his hands didn’t sooth in the slightest the pain, the sorrow for who he had lost, who the whole multiverse had lost

But for how deep the wound was he knew he couldn’t let himself give up

Dream and Ink wouldn’t have wanted that to happen

If he just stopped doing his duty, then their sacrifice would have been vain

He wasn’t going to disrespect them like that

Once upon a time there was a multiverse

Filled with hundreds of thousands of beautiful universes each one of them special in their own unique way

And to guard them all three powerful beings came to existence

The God of Creation

The Prince of Positivity

The Guard of Justice

To save the multiverse these three powerful beings fought with all their strength and determination

Chapter Text

Once upon a time there was a multiverse

Filled with hundreds of thousands of beautiful universes each one of them special in their own unique way

And to guard them all one being, a survivor that decided to not give up

The Guard of Justice

Blue refused to let himself give up

He knew he couldn’t

He healed himself

He passed hours and hours lonely patching all his wounds both in his body and spirit

His soul filled with as much sorrow as determination

The Guard of Justice wasn’t going to let his friends’ sacrifice be vain

Blue didn’t give out the news of the death of his two dear friends

He wasn’t ready to do so and spreading panic across the multiverse wasn’t going to make his job easier in any way

He avoided carefully getting near to the frozen AUs deciding to instead dedicate himself to train

And he did train

Harder and longer than what he have ever done before

Now the safety of the multiverse relayed only on his shoulders

Soon enough he learnt he could and should use the Golden Apple

It hurt use what used to be his friend’s soul but he had no other option

The Golden Apple allowed him to travel across universes

He passed several time just jumping from one AU to another, just to check if everything was fine

Luckily Nightmare indeed kept his words of not attacking any universe until they solved the ice infection problem, so he wasn’t going to be bothered facing him and his gang at least for the moment

Unluckily for him, the King of Negativity wasn’t his only problem

One day while he was busy checking the list of AUs he had already visited in the Doodle Sphere he noticed something with the corner of his eye-light

He moved wary close to the AU that had caught his attention

He saw how glitches started appearing all over the smooth paper

The way the propagated similarly to some sort of infection gave him chills down his spine

The AU got covered in more and more glitches until suddenly blue strings came out of it wrapping themselves around the paper and totally destroying it

Not even dust was left behind

Just emptiness

Nothing

Those blue string needed to introduction

Blue knew who was the responsible for this even if it was his first time witnessing the destruction of an AU from the Doodle Sphere

Ink would have stepped in to stop Error on a normal day

Blue bitterly reminded himself that his friend was no longer around to do so

No other AU seemed affected so for the moment the Guard of Justice decided to just keep on with his training

More AUs had been destroyed with time

Mind you they were only minor timelines for the most

Each time and AU started glitching like that he simply felt paralyzed

He would just blankly stare to the infection spread and take down the timeline without being able to move a single bone

It was as if somehow he expected the God of Creation to simply appear and stop it

It never happened

None ever came

He knew they wouldn’t

He had no idea of how much time he spent waiting for his friends to come back

At some point he had hoped that being so fundamental for the balance of the universe they would just be brought back by the Creators

But the Doodle Sphere remained quiet and empty

It didn’t matter how many times he had ‘accidentally’ spilled ink while he was writing something

It didn’t matter how many times he had stared to the Golden Apple enchanted by his comforting light

None of his friends ever came back from the iced AU

None of his friends was going to stop Error

He had to do it

He had promised himself he would do it

He wouldn’t hesitate a second in fighting all alone Nightmare and all his gang for the sake of an AU

But … seeing those glitches spreading over the white pages made him sick

Blue was once more doing the usual check of the AUs when he heard the sound of glitches appearing

He turned and rapidly found the infected page

His eyes widened as he realized it wasn’t anymore a minor timeline

It was a main timeline

That was a much bigger of a deal as its destruction would directly affect other timelines too

Blue ran towards it, but felt once more paralyzed as soon as he observed how the glitches slowly started expanding over the page

The Guard of Justice kept scolding himself, but just couldn’t bring himself to take another step

Frustrated with himself he stomped harshly the floor but stopped his tantrum as soon as he noticed his negativity affecting the Golden Apple he was holding

He immediately whispered a soft apology as he cradled close the source of positivity as it eased his nerves

As he looked to its ethereal shine he felt his soul fill with hope

He couldn’t give up

But he also couldn’t do this totally alone

Blue turned on his feet and quickly ran to their base in the Doodle Sphere

He had avoided totally going in his friends’ room up until that moment

He was scared of how their emptiness would remind him too painfully of what he had lost

But he couldn’t go on like this, he needed to face the problem and needed to seek for something that could help him

Blue climbed quickly the stair deciding to first stop in front of Dream’s room

He took a deep breath as he placed a hand over the apple, nearly as if he was silently asking permission to walk in his room

And then he opened the door

He knew he should be fast and search for something useful before going to stop Error

But Blue could do nothing but allow himself a few instants to just admire the room he had just stepped in

His room reflected perfectly the Prince of Positivity’s personality

It was really tidy, but not stark

Unlike what others may expect it wasn’t filled with bright yellows and decorations, not at all

It was decorated in a really simple way

The colors were warm and welcoming, not bright and blinding

It was a clean room that could make you feel home even if it was the first time you’ve ever visited it

The soft and fresh flower scent engulfing him was so familiar it nearly made Blue tear up

For how long he wanted to lay in the new found bubble of comfort he couldn’t

He forced himself move faster as he searched in the room, constantly and silently apologizing for breaking into the other’s privacy in such way

He didn’t found weapons, of course he didn’t as the other invocated all of them with his own positivity when they were needed

Before he could leave the room, something caught his attention

There laying at the side of the bed there was a staff

Blue carefully picked it up

He remembered how Dream used it as his main weapon when the Star Sanses were created

He could do nothing but smile as he remembered how much of a pacifist he was back then

Soon enough they all learnt that if they wanted to survive others measurements needed to be taken

So Dream switched to bow and arrows

He didn’t use anymore his staff in battle, but he would still summon it from time to time

It seemed to bring him comfort

Blue noticed how the glow of the Golden Apple seemed to increase as he moved it closer to the staff

The two objects fused together until they formed some kind of scepter

For the first time since the ice infection had started Blue’s eye-lights switched to a couple of amazed shining stars

He smiled more as he held the object and felt the pure positivity running through it

He doubted he could really use attacks made of positivity, but the scepter gave him such confidence, nearly as if Dream was still there by his side

Nodding to himself he decided to take it with him as he moved to the other room

He was going to have time to loose himself in soft memories if he survived the confrontation with Error in a second moment

With those thoughts in mind he went to Ink’s room

The door wasn’t even closed, it was wide open as always

As soon as he stepped in a fond sad smile formed on Blue’s face

The room was, for how surprising it may seem, quiet tidy

Unlike the soft elegant warm colors in Dream’s room, here every single surface was covered in some kind of paint, drawing, doodle or notes

Ink surely made sure to use each single existent color, not forgetting even one as it would be absolutely impossible to find two points where the artist had used the same shade

The art didn’t limit itself to the walls, of course it didn’t

Every single object and piece of furniture was itself a work of art of some sort

If overall the room was surprisingly quiet tidy, all the mess was concentrated on the desk

Ink had this huge desk that represented the epitome of chaos

All his arts supplies of every sort where thrown around, everything was spread in such chaotic way

It looked so … full of life

Nearly as if Ink had just left to go and make something to eat and was going to be back at any moment, continuing working on whatever project that was scattered around

Blue got closer, eye-lights laying and roaming over all the mess

Ink had always refused to tidy his desk as he always said that artistic chaos enhanced his creativity

A wet giggle escaped from his body as he remembered how Dream and he himself tried time and time again to put some order just to inevitably fail

Raising a hand to wipe off the tears Blue got close enough to actually see the half-finished project Ink had been working on before he left without knowing it for the last time

His soul dropped as he realized what was the last project his dear friend had worked on

There, laying in the middle of all the mess there was the unfinished upper part of an armor

The Guard of Justice quickly recognized the design as the one him and Ink created back in the Doodle Sphere

He slowly raised his hand

He took off his blue glove

He wanted to feel the material under his bones

He took a deep breath as he caressed it carefully, admiring the design his friend was carefully bringing up to life with such care for every little detail

There, laying near his armor there were a couple of ink vials

The God of Creation had a couple of spare ones for each color

He never lost his sash, but he didn’t want to take any risk

Plus the colors that gave him feels were particularly useful when it came to create the most beautiful creations

Blue picked up the yellow vial that was lying there

The color of happiness shining of its own in such beautiful way

It was the only color that could have ever been compared to the precious brightness of Dream’s eye-lights

The reminders of his friends made his soul ache so badly

He felt more tears gathering, but they all stopped as he looked down on the papers scattered around

There were the sketches of Blue’s armor

But on the corner of one of the sketches there was something else

A black skeleton messily drawn

A cold icy blue aura around him

Blue didn’t stay to catch any other detail

He picked up the armor and left

When he found himself in front of the glitching AU he didn’t hesitate an instant

He opened a portal using his scepter and stepped in without looking behind

Finding Error wasn’t a hard task at all

The black skeleton surely didn’t do his job in secret

The other seemed to be taking his time in destroying that particular AU

Blue had never faced Error by himself

Not for long periods at least as Ink was surely the favorite rival of the black skeleton

He wasn’t really surprised

Opposites were bonded to gravitate one towards the other after all

Blue scanned the battlefield

The Guard of Justice had always been a loyal opponent

He would always face his enemy and never try to trick them in any sneaky way

He was convinced the right was to fight was with honor

But now he was by himself

He couldn’t anymore take the luxury of following all his ideals

He needed to be smart like Ink and resolute like Dream if he wanted to have any chance of survival

Without any warning Blue teleported himself behind the other skeleton as he used a bone attack throw the other to the floor just to then trap him in bones

Error let out a glitched groan as he surely wasn’t expecting that kind of attack

He seemed quiet pissed off until he looked up to his attacker and found Blue there

The black skeleton seemed a bit confused and glanced around as if he was searching for something, someone else

He then let out a cold chuckle as he got up

“Well well- I surely didn’t expect such sneaky attack from you Blue. I thought Ink was the one with goldfish memory, did you forget your code of honor?”

He teased him before suddenly sending his strings towards the other

Using his new staff Blue cut them and tried to get closer to attack once more

The two of them kept fighting for a while, but Error seemed becoming more and more unnerved

He kept glancing around as if he expected someone to snick up on him at any given moment

But none came

That made the fight easier for Blue who focused on the battle ignoring everything else

The instinct of turning to check on his friends was always at the back of his mind bitterly mixing with the knowledge that such action wasn’t anymore needed

“So what about your new toys? New weapon and armor? Another disgusting creation of that squid?”

Error kept trying starting a conversation with him

Blue simply ignored him

That seemed to piss off more and more the God of Destruction to the point his attacks started turning more aggressive

“So where is that Ink stain? Since when he is too busy to look after his precious AUs?”

Blue kept silence

“You know- I destroyed several timelines before this one, wasn’t it enough to catch the all mighty God of Creation’s attention?”

Error said sarcastically trying to get some sort of answer to what was going on as he had already picked something was off

The strings were becoming harder and harder to dodge

The God of Destruction’s annoyance making him stronger and more aggressive

Blue wasn’t sure how long he could keep up this peace if the other didn’t calm down

“Maybe I should go after a major one as Underfell to have him show up instead of sending here his assistant!? Or is the squid simply slacking off-“

“Ink is gone”

Blue’s voice cut the atmosphere instantly

Error stopped on his tracks

His body glitched lightly as he focused his mismatched eye-lights on Blue for a few instants before huffing

“Where did he go now? He finally managed to loose himself in the AUs due his goldfish me-“

“Ink is dead”

Saying it aloud broke Blue from inside more than what he could have ever imagined

He knew they were gone, he had cried for them, he had acknowledged what had happened in every possible way

But saying it aloud

Somehow it made it more real than what had ever been up until that moment

Somehow it made him feel as if he was the one who had killed them

Right in that moment as he stated the painful truth

His train of thought was abruptly interrupted by a glitched laugh

“You have to be kidding me-“

The black skeleton said as ore glitches appeared on his body as he laughed so hard he bent holding his stomach

“As if that squid could die- now you nearly had me for a second. Is he so afraid of facing me to invent this little story to go on holiday or something?”

Blue silently looked at him

He couldn’t stop himself but feeling some sort of pity for the other

After all he used to like consider Error some sort of friend

“I am sorry Error”

He said quietly

His tone was final

He knew he shouldn’t feel such anger

But as he stared to the other incredulous skeleton he couldn’t stop himself but bitterly think how maybe both his friends would still be by his side if the other had bothered helping them for once

The glitches over Error’s body became more and more as he seemed to slowly become more unstable before they stopped

And then Blue was tightly wrapped in blue strings dragged closer to the Destroyer who stared at him with a crazy deadly eye-lights

“Tell Ink that if he wants to play hide and seek I will destroy the main timelines until he doesn’t show his face”

The other threatened him before letting him fall to the ground abruptly and leaving the AU

Blue stayed quietly sat there for a while before finally standing back up on his feet

Things hadn’t exactly go as planned, but at least he had survived and for the moment this AU was safe

He quickly found the human and told him to reset before going back to the Doodle Sphere

He silently hoped Error didn’t have any intention to fulfill his threat any time soon

Blue became more skillful in the use of his new weapons

The scepter was always in his hand, shining in such soft warm light that could bring comfort to anyone who even glanced at it

It would allow him to teleport from AU to AU and spread positivity thanks to it

The new armor even if unfinished fitted his frame perfectly and offered an extra layer of protection that would soon come in handy

He decided to take with him some of Ink’s vials, having them on his belt brought him comfort

As he travelled across AUs, if he allowed himself to close his eye-lights he could even allow himself to imagine his friends were at his side

For how nice the thought was, he never dwelled too much into it

It was just dream

It made him happy for a few seconds sure, but at the end of the day it was just an illusion and nothing more

It didn’t matter how much Blue wished he didn’t

Error ended indeed fulfilling his promise

The God of Destruction started attacking more and more timelines

He would demand at great voice for the God of Creation to appear

He never did

And with each attack Error became more and more unstable

Blue wished he could say he was in denial for the loss of a friend

Just as he had been

But after several times of trying over and over again to reason with him he stopped

He knew the other was in total denial

But not out of care for Ink

Or at least Blue didn’t think that was the reason behind his craziness

If he had cared he would have helped them back then when the ice infection was spreading

He wouldn’t have teased them and ignored them

Blue didn’t think Error cared

And for this lack of his, he couldn’t find any way to reason with him

He couldn’t stop him

For the most their fights would end with either Blue running away or Error being so pissed off he would storm out of the AU

The Guard of Justice knew he was no match for the other

Not when his craziness had made him become more dangerous than what he had ever

Stronger than what he ever was

The only option that came to his mind was trying to make him go back to his senses

To do so he would have to understand Error

Understand the reason behind his sudden picks of insanity

Before he could really explore that option, someone opened a portal behind him

Blue turned to face the King of Negativity and his gang

He couldn’t stop himself but notice that Horror was nowhere to be seen

“Error is out of control”

It was surprisingly Dust to break the silence

Blue quietly looked at them for a few instants before nodding solemnly

Using his scepter he opened a portal to the Doodle Sphere

It didn’t escape to him how Nightmare didn’t even dare to glance to the Golden Apple

With Sci’s help they were able to create devices that allowed beings to travel across AUs to escape from the destruction of their own homes

Nightmare and his gang with time revealed to be powerful allies

They kept up with Error for a long while

Weeks? Months? Years? Decades?

Maybe even centuries

Blue couldn’t really tell

The only thing he knew was that he was becoming tired

So tired

He barely visited his home AU at all as he spent all his time in the Doodle Sphere and travelling across AUs making sure everything was in place

Without Ink the rate of universes created dropped sensibly

The new ones were extremely rare

And even when they appeared, most of the time they were barely more than few sketches and basic alternative timelines

It didn’t matter how hard he tried, Blue couldn’t really replace his friends in many aspects

The only thing he could do was look out for the already existing AUs

Nightmare and his gang helped

Blue didn’t really mind if it was out of genuine good intentions, guilt or selfish proposes

They didn’t cause problems anymore and dealt with Error

They represented a good much for a while

Unfortunately the black skeleton wasn’t considered a God for nothing

With each attack he got stronger and crazier

Glitches covering his body, making his angered words a mess impossible to understand

The God of Destruction lived up his title

The gang was back to the Doodle Sphere

They barely made it out alive, again

Blue knew they could no longer go on like this

Error needed to be stopped

It didn’t matter how much Blue tried to avoid it

He knew to that point nothing but drastic measures would work

He knew they couldn’t do it on their own

The other was too powerful and dangerous

They had tried many times

It didn’t matter how carefully they planned it all

The other’s determination in causing destruction was unstoppable

Trying to stop him was risky- heck even trying to face him directly was to that point a suicide mission

Blue restless thought of a solution

Days and days passed in Ink’s room

Hoping, praying there was something somewhere that could tell him how to defeat Error once for all

After all Ink had always been so forgetful, he had to have written it somewhere right?

As he collapsed on the artist’s bed he sighed heavily

Nothing

Of course Ink didn’t write down anything about it

He silently wondered how his dear friend would have reacted if the Destroyer had suddenly gone missing

Would he have felt guilty? Would he have forgotten of the other’s existence? Would he have turned crazy?

Blue shook his head

He didn’t like thinking of his friend like that

The Guard of Justice stared to the decorated ceiling with tired eye-lights were there were some doodles of the Star Sanses

He smiled to the little drawings he had grown so familiar with

Was this how Ink fell asleep and woke up every night?

Wanting him and Dream to be the first things on his mind each time?

Never wanting to forget them?

He wished Ink was there

He never had any real struggle dealing with Error

He wished Dream was there

He would have known what do

Blue’s eye-lights landed on his scepter

The Golden Apple was still shining at its top

He quietly enjoyed his warmth

Quickly his relaxed thinking expression turned into a frown

Such frown got deeper and deeper as he observed the source of such warm and comforting positivity

Blue picked up the object and ran out of the house

For the first time since the incident he ran to the frozen AUs area

He opened a portal to the first infected AU

With no hesitation he stepped in

Blue ignored how sick the landscape in front of him made him as he walked deeper in the AU

The violent storm that once brutally attacked his bones with its strong wind had totally disappeared

Everything was still

Frozen in time and space

The shadow figure completely gone

Nothing was left behind but a frozen land

Even if Blue had been there only once many many years before he perfectly remembered that fateful day

Without hesitation he walked in the same direction he, they, had went in that occasion

The first thing his eye-lights met aside from ice were vials scattered all around

Some partially cracked

Some totally shattered

No trace of their owner could be found anywhere

Blue had no idea what Ink did to stop that shadowy creature from destroying their multiverse

He wasn’t sure he wanted to even find out

He didn’t make any attempted of picking up the vials

They were frozen, stuck in the ice forever

He kept going on

Blue didn’t have to walk much before finding what he was looking for

Who he was looking for

Who he had hoped to find

In that desolated land the frozen figure of the Prince of Positivity was hard to miss

Blue found himself too tired to even cry

He looked up to his dear friend sadly and fondly

All Dream’s body was covered in ice

His figure had been perfectly preserved as if it hadn’t pass even a single day since when he had been frozen

Blue observed the other’s expression carefully

The Prince of Positivity

So full of power and grace

Even in his last moments his expression was fair and brave

Hopeful and peaceful in his eternal sleep

He had faith they wouldn’t fail

He had faith in Blue

He couldn’t stop himself but feel as if he was disappointing him

He couldn’t do it by himself

He was too tired and Error too powerful

Dream would know what to do

The leader of the Star Sanses always knew what to do

That was why he needed to bring him back

Blue took a deep breath

This could either be a blessing or a total catastrophe

There was no guarantee that his plan was going to work

He never dared to try what his intuition told him to do because he feared the consequences

What if he ended losing the Golden Apple?

It didn’t matter how badly he wanted his friend back

He couldn’t take such risk for his selfish desire

But now that didn’t matter anymore

If they didn’t stop Error then the Golden Apple would be useless anyway

Blue glanced to the precious fruit as determination and hope filled him once more

With a firm hand he went to his belt and picked up a couple of Ink’s vials

Yellow and Orange

Positive emotions

Warm colors

The same ones the artist itself had used to melt the ice during his final battle

Blue took the little heart shaped plugs from the vials and carefully let the ink come out

He poured them over Dream’s figure for the most as he didn’t want to risk contaminating the Golden Apple

He used some yellow just to potentiate some more the holy fruit before slowly letting it come closer to Dream

For a few instants nothing happened

Blue felt tears down his cheeks but he refused to stop

He put all his faith and hopes in what he was doing

And then a light appeared

So bright and powerful it could break the sky

It was so blinding Blue had to close his eye-lights

When he was able to open them once more they widened as plates

All around him the ice had melted

But that wasn’t what caught his attention

Just in front of him a figure was lightly floating over the ground

Blue could barely believe it

“D-Dream?”

He muttered moving closer

Needing to be closer

To hug him

To cry

But he froze on his tracks as he actually focused on the seemingly ethereal being in front of him

White gold eye-lights calmly staring back to him

There was no time to loose

Blue and Dream quickly made their way into a nearly totally devastated AU

Dust and Killer were laying down

Several bones broken

Nightmare was heavily panting

A couple of his own tentacles missing from his back

Thick black good dripping on the floor from his body

There suspended in the middle of the air was Error

All his body was covered in glitches

His blue string were tightly wrapped around Cross as a maniacal laugh escaped from the corrupted black skeleton

Blue cut the string with a bone attack letting the bi-chromatic skeleton fall to the ground

The Guard of Justice prepared himself for the battle as the mass of glitches that he once even considered a friend turned in their directions

But the destroyer didn’t attack

He was so still Blue for a few instants thought that he had entered in a reboot

But the signs of error were disappearing not increasing

The mismatched eye-lights were fixed not on Blue, but on the figure at his side

Soon enough the royal guard noticed how Dream was slightly shining in a soft light

It wasn’t warm and welcoming

It was much colder and ethereal

Blue observed how Dream moved closer and closer to the suddenly calm destroyer

The Prince of Positivity offered a hand to the God of Destruction

And then white smoke and light engulfed the two figures

Before they disappeared Blue would have sworn he had heard Error mutter the name of the God of Creation while staring at Dream

The Guard of Justice simply stared at the soft cloud that had embraced his friend and the destroyer

All his body was tensed

He was ready to jump in at any instant

At the littlest signal that something could be going wrong

He couldn’t lose his friend like that

Not again

But the white smoke cloud quickly dissipated by itself revealing Dream’s figure holding Error in his embrace

Hands interlaced loosely

The God of Destruction had fallen asleep

The God of Destruction had fallen asleep

He never woke up

Not in hours, not in days and not in weeks

He seemed peaceful in his sleep

Blue couldn’t even remember when was the last time he had seen his once friend so calm and relaxed

The Guard of Justice didn’t dare to ask Dream what he had done

Blue wasn’t alone anymore

Dream was back at his side

The Guard of Justice barely recognized what used to be one of his dearest friends

At first Blue had thought the other needed time

After all he had just been brought back to life from an ice prison and fought the destroyer himself

He was probably getting once more adjusted to his own soul

He was probably trying to catch up with all the changes

He was probably just tired

Just like Blue

He was so tired

But he couldn’t stop

There were so many things to do

The presence to his side may be much colder than what used to be

It was comforting nevertheless

Dream was much more silent than what he used to be

He never smiled

Blue wasn’t able to catch not even once a single glimpse of happiness in those calm white gold eye-lights

Dream would encourage him to take a break whenever he would go around to spread positivity

Blue wanted to accompany him at first

He didn’t want to leave him alone

But he was just so tired

Taking a little break would do no harm right?

Blue had no peaceful sleep

After so long of being the only guardian of the multiverse he couldn’t just find it in himself to rest

It didn’t matter how tired he was, he couldn’t stop

He was the only left guardian for so long, he couldn’t just take a break

He had to stay alert at any moment

The multiverse needed him to make sure everything was in order

The Guard of Justice decided to check on how his friend was doing

When he found him he finally realized that Dream’s behavior wasn’t the only thing that had changed

The other had the same ideals of bringing peace and happiness as before

But his methods were surely much different

Blue knew Dream was going to pay a visit to Underfell

Such important timeline had been deeply wounded by Error

He may not have got to destroy it totally, but damage had been done and without Ink around it was impossible to make up for it

No reset could bring things back how they used to be

That of course had caused the negativity to reach high picks in the area

Nothing that Blue had tried could bring comfort to the inhabitants who unhappy and with violent tendencies were constantly rioting or attacking each other

But as the Guard of Justice stepped into the usual noisy AU he was welcomed by calm and silence

Such total quietness was unreal

Confused he walked around the universe trying to find his friend or some explanation to what was going on

His eye-lights widened as he saw tons of monsters lying down near the main square

They were so still Blue would have sworn they seemed statues

And at the center of it all there was Dream

The Prince of Positivity was holding Fell!Papyrus’ hand as the tall skeleton was laid down like the others deeply asleep

Blue was totally frozen in his place

“What did you do?”

He finally let out

It was so quiet it didn’t matter how his words were barely a whisper, it was heard loud and clear in the square

White golden eye-lights fixed on him

Blue couldn’t decipher his expression

“They wanted to be happy”

He stated calmly before looking down to the peacefully sleeping Papyrus as he squeezed gently his hand

“They were so tired”

Blue didn’t argue back

Blue was coming back from checking the main timelines

Now that Error had been stopped he could finally try to deal with the consequences his destruction rush had caused across all the multiverse

The task revealed itself to be much more complex than what he had firstly thought

Half of the multiverse was hanging on a string whereas the other half was deeply affected as well by the deep lack of balance

Blue just felt more and more exhausted as time passed by

He still refused to rest

As soon as he entered the Doodle Sphere his aching head was welcomed by loud yelling

At first he simply thought it was just the members of the gang arguing

They did that pretty often, it was never really harmful so he had learnt to stop worrying

He really wanted to lay down for a while, but as the yelling continued he decided he should probably go and check on them

Just to make sure they didn’t bring things too far

He soon found out the ones yelling weren’t Dust or Killer

“Do you even hear yourself?! You are just an empty husk who takes advantage-“

“Cross came to me because he was tired, I offered him a hand and he took it”

“He isn’t waking up”

“He doesn’t want to, he is happy now”

“What do you even know about happiness?! You can’t even feel it anymore! Everything you do, everything you offer is fake!”

“You always said I was fake, aren’t you happy I became what you wanted me to?”

“You-“

The negativity as he got closer and closer was so strong Blue himself felt suffocated

It clouded his mind and he wanted nothing else but leave

Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Guilt, Fear

Blue simply wanted to get out of there as Nightmare’s yelling became louder and louder

The angered King of Negativity started stepping angrily closer to his brother but he stopped on his tracks as a cracking noise was heard echoing in the whole Doodle Sphere

Blue looked up so fast his neck nearly snapped

Nightmare’s expression had switched from an angered to a horrified one

Blue felt sick as he saw how Dream’s bones were cracking in various point as if he was made of the finest glass

All desire to leave disappeared as the Guard of Justice teleported in front of the King of Negativity harshly shoving him away

He had to restrain himself with all his strength to keep himself in check and not yell at Nightmare

More negativity wasn’t going to help Dream

If Nightmare had seemed horrified just a few seconds earlier his expression had back switched to a much more mocking one

“To be the Guard of Justice you aren’t really keeping in check that ‘thing’. Doing favoritism isn’t really fair you know”

“Since when do you care for what is and isn’t fair?”

Blue couldn’t help himself but scoff

“Since when trapping monsters in eternal dreams is part of your work ethic of bringing peace and happiness?”

Blue stayed quiet

“That is what I thought. You better stop this pathetic empty husk here, he is the evil one not me-“

“He is your brother”

“He isn’t”

“Well- maybe he would still be if you hadn’t abandoned us to our doomed destiny”

Nightmare’s tentacles sharpened but Blue was faster summoning a gaster blaster and pointing it to the other

The King of Negativity observed him for a few moments his dark aura suffocating the Guard of Justice

Blue didn’t back off the littlest bit as he openly challenged him

Nightmare briefly glanced to him and then to Dream who was behind him

“Make him wake Cross up”

He simply said as he turned and left

Blue kept his rigid fighting stand for a while more before finally relaxing and immediately rushing to Dream

“Dream-“

He said as he observed how his white bones had cracks in many points

“I am fine … I just need some positivity and they will heal”

The other answered calmly

It should be frustrating how devoid of emotions he was

Blue remembered how upset it would make him deal with Ink when he forgot to take his vials

But with Dream somehow his constant calm behavior reassured him

He sighed heavily as he nodded

“Dream we need to talk”

He said as the other didn’t seem in any pain, he was simply staring to the point where Nightmare was moments earlier

Blue wished he was able to read his expression

“You have to make Cross wake up”

“I can’t”

Was the quiet answer

That made Blue frown, it didn’t sound right

“You made him fall asleep, you can wake him up. We have a truce with Nightmare, but I doubt he’ll want to respect it if you make his gang fall asleep”

Dream stayed quiet looking down to the crack on his arms bones

“Waking him up would make them unhappy again”

He said softly before lifting his gaze to meet Blue’s one

“I just want them all to be happy”

For some reason those words made the Guard of Justice’s soul ache due the innocent sincerity of the tone his dear friend used

He didn’t totally understand it, but he guessed that was why he wasn’t the Prince of Positivity

“They can all really wake up if they want to?”

Dream nodded

Blue decided to believe him

The next years had grown to be quieter and quieter

Surprisingly enough Nightmare never picked up a fight, even when Cross never woke up

Blue followed Dream everywhere he went, didn’t matter how tired he was

His friend hadn’t lied

Dream didn’t make fall asleep anyone that didn’t want to

Dream didn’t hide what he did because it wasn’t wrong

Dream openly talked about it to whoever would ask

Dream would never force anyone

Dream would simply lay a hand to everyone and it came to them if accept and take it or not

More than once Blue found himself staring to that hand so gently and compassionately offered to everyone

Years kept passing by

The voices about what Dream was able to do reached every corner of the multiverse

Most of the time they didn’t even have to go around and seek for someone to help

Monsters and humans alike would just come to Dream spontaneously

Entire universes seeking for peace accepted to take the Prince of Positivity’s hand and fall asleep in his reassuring embrace

Blue kept refusing to take a break

He would keep going on from universe to universe

He even visited the ones who were totally asleep

He would observe their peaceful and relaxed sleeping expressions

He would close his eyes and enjoy the calm and quietness before jumping again to another universe

Blue was getting ready to change AU when suddenly a hand laid on his shoulder scaring him out

He turned quickly a bone up to the throat of his potential enemy

“You are becoming slow Blue, on your best days I wouldn’t have been able to sneak up on you so easily”

The Guard of Justice couldn’t stop himself but smile fondly and lightly embarrassed

“Years are passing by for me too Dust”

He said letting down his weapon at the sight of his ally

Him and the other skeleton had surely grown closer during the long truce that had been going on between the gang and the only member of the Star Sanses left

They were never really the closest friends

Dust was a bit too sadistic and Blue too busy being the only guardian left to really let any time for their relationship to grow much

Still Dust made some of the most terrible puns Blue ever heard and the latter was a nice change of company from the usual gang

This added to the fact that they shared some common ideal of justice, even if shaped in really different ways, made so that they got along with each other pretty well

“What brings you here in this asleep universe my friend? How can the magnificent Blue help you?”

The Guard of Justice said, eye-lights lightly sparkling as he didn’t have often the chance to use his old introduction

Not with everything that had been going on

Dust showed a rare smile before shrugging his shoulders

The two of them simply watched the cloudy sky for a while, the soft wind their only company

Blue noticed how Dust adjusted the scarf around his neck even if it wasn’t cold at all

As years had passed by the royal guard had grasped it was a nervous habit of the other

“I was looking for Dream”

The words cut the air like butter

 “Nightmare won’t be happy”

Blue said as he looked to the other frowning, but Dust only scoffed

“I don’t think I remember the last time he had been happy anyway, it wouldn’t make any difference”

“He may go after Dream”

“You know he won’t”

Blue stayed quiet once more

“Still- why would you or anyone want to just sleep?”

“You know why- monsters and humans alike fall asleep and can live their best lives. No more loops, no more resets, no more destruction. Just dreams”

“They are indeed just dreams”

Blue blurted out

“They are illusions, nothing there is real”

“It is real enough for them”

Dust replied without hesitation

“It doesn’t matter if it is a lie or not, if you believe strong enough in it, it can become your reality”

Blue looked a bit down

“And what about you? You have never been the type of monster who believes in joyful dreams, especially if you know they are illusions. They stay asleep because they think what they see is real, but you wouldn’t fall for that. So what are you looking for falling in the land of dreams?”

Blue insisted, trying to understand

Dust closed his eyes and took a deep breath

“Do you hear this?”

Blue frowned confused as he closed his eyes too

“I can’t hear nothing”

“That’s it”

Blue was just more puzzled than before

“I don’t think I understand”

“I don’t want happy sappy dreams … I just want peace and silence”

“Well- you can have it staying awake too”

“You know we can’t”

Dust opened his eyes to look at Blue

“Think about it Blue. We have done our best to keep the multiverse together, but the balance is too far messed up to be restored and you know it. Everything is so precarious. Both gods of Creation and Destruction gone in a way or another. I contributed to the fall of our multiverse centuries ago when I refused to help you and I recognize that. We all just decided that the guardians were the one who had to solve problems and we were just there to cause them. We were wrong. I failed our multiverse. I failed my brother. I failed Ink and Dream. I failed Nightmare. I failed you”

He said sighing heavily

“There is nothing else we can do at this point but seek peace. A peace we don’t deserve, but one Dream is nevertheless offering”

Dust turned to Blue and laid a hand on his shoulder gently squeezing it

“We are all tired Blue. You are tired too and more than anyone else you deserve to rest”

That was the end of their conversation

Blue was with Dust when Dream made him fall asleep

It didn’t feel as a goodbye

Dust’s words kept resonating over and over again in his head

With time he started understanding him

He started smiling as universe after universe they all met peace

That was everything he ever wanted

No more wars or conflicts or destruction

Everything turned quiet and peaceful

He was so tired, but he had also learnt the art of patience

So he waited

He waited and waited until pretty much everyone else had succumbed to the desire of living free in their dreams

Until everything was peaceful

He left the his home universe with a smile on his face as he left only silence behind him

Once he stepped in the Doodle Sphere he looked with pride to all the AUs he had been able to protect and preserve

He wished Ink was there to see it too

The Guard of Justice turned and walked to the Star Sanses base

He laid Dream’s staff down on the carpet of the living room

He took off the armor Ink had designed for him and carefully placed it to its side

Blue laid down on the couch

The skeleton with white golden eye-lights was already at his side

His expression calm and unreadable as always

When Dream offered him his hand he took it

He couldn’t wait to see them again

Once upon a time there was a multiverse

Filled with hundreds of thousands of beautiful universes each one of them special in their own unique way

It grew quieter and quieter as time passed

All of them had finally found happiness

All of them peacefully sleeping

Such silent heaven owed its existence to one ethereal being

Eternal!Dream

Did you like it?
I decided to make Blue fall asleep in the Star Sanses base instead of his home AU because he had spent so little time there in the past centuries that he feels more at home at the base of Star Sanses. He also decided to sleep on the couch rather than Dream or Ink's room because most of their happy memories happened on that couch! The same couch where they watched so many movies eating tacos, the same couch he cried when they died is the same couch where he decided to fall asleep forever, encountering once more all his friends and loved ones in his dreams, finally free- it sounded poetic to me XD

Any theories about who is actually Eternal!Dream and why he acts like this? Let me know!
