His Reason

Summary:

Luz wonders why good people do bad things and asks Eda.
*takes place not long after season 2’s episode 6*

Notes:

I love The Owl House! I watched “Hunting Palismen” today and wow, was I intrigued. I can’t wait to learn which direction Hunter will go in and what he’ll do. His character is really interesting.

Work Text:

It was early morning, six or five o’clock. The sun was just beginning to rise, the horizon a deep red with splashes of dark orange, while the sky above was still quite dark.

Luz wasn’t sure how long she’d been up for. She was sleepy, that was for sure, but she just couldn’t get to sleep. Her mind was too full.

She’d long given up trying to sleep in her bed. She was too hot under her blankets, so she tiptoed downstairs awhile ago and curled up on the sofa. Then she just thought. She couldn’t stop thinking.

And the more she thought, the more she got confused. All because of the stupid boy underneath the armour of The Golden Guard.

Luz had always had a bit of a sensitive heart. Friendship was important to her—especially since making friends hadn’t always come easy to her. She thought she’d made a new friend, but he’d broke her trust. Granted, he seemed to have changed his mind in the end? Luz wasn’t exactly sure, but he’d let her go with the orphan Palismen. Now she wasn’t sure if they were friends or enemies again. She wasn’t sure what he was either.

“What are you doing up?” Eda asked, coming down the stairs, the sound of her voice breaking Luz out of her thoughts.

“Oh. I couldn’t sleep,” she responded.

Eda sat next to her, crossing her leg over the other, yawning.

“What about you?” asked Luz, curious. It was unlikely for Eda to be up so early. It was unlikely for her to be up before noon.

“Sometimes I get this horrible kink in my neck. Makes it impossible to sleep,” Eda explained.

“Oh…” Luz quieted, returning to her thoughts about the Golden Guard… Hunter.

Eda noticed. “Something happen, kiddo?”

“Well…” Luz hesitated. “Yeah.”

Eda’s face became soft. “Wanna talk about it?”

Luz wasn’t sure if she should actually tell her or not. But she did really need to get out of her head. Maybe she’d just leave out some non-important details. Like how she was on an adventure last night with the Golden Guard, of all adventuring partners. That part totally wasn’t important at all.

“I met someone,” Luz began, hugging her knees to her chest.

“Yeah? What about them?” Eda asked.

“At first, I thought he was a bad person, since all he does is bad things. But… he turned out to be… nice, actually,” Luz said. “We were getting along really well. In fact, it sort of felt like we were old friends, or something. But then he…” Luz frowned sadly, “did something bad again.”

Eda slipped a gentle arm around Luz’s shoulders.

Luz sighed, leaning against the woman. “Eda, why do good people do bad things?”

Eda thought for a moment. “Well, I know people always have a reason for what they do,” she said. She pulled Luz a little closer, rubbing her hand on the girl’s upper arm. “People are so different and go through very different things. There’s so many reasons why. Though I’ve seen that hurt always creates more hurt. I think that’s why.”

Luz nodded. That was sad, but it made sense. She thought it might apply to Hunter.

“He seemed trapped,” she said. She looked up at Eda. “Could that be his reason?”

Eda shrugged. “Maybe.”

Luz’s eyelids drooped and a big yawn left her mouth. She sunk against Eda.

“What are you gonna do?” questioned Eda.

“I don’t know,” Luz slurred sleepily, her thoughts turning to mush. “But I think… he maybe needs saving… and maybe I should save…him.” It was the last thing she thought before slumber overcame her.

(Eda smiled tenderly. Luz’s eyelids fell shut and baby snores exited her nose. She was fast asleep. She always looked so cute when she was asleep.

Carefully, Eda laid her on the sofa and covered her with a blanket. The kid was always busy caring about others, no matter who they were. She deserved to sleep well.)
