How Heckle Got Her Groove Back

Chapter 6: Last Call

Chapter Text

She should feel guilty.

Technically, she was cheating.

But as the glasses piled up on the table between them, she knew there was no way she could back out now. Tapioca was down for the count. Bat was snoring on the sofa, and even Barry could barely hold up his head anymore.

It all came down to this.

She looked at her glass. She looked at Dimity.

Dimity looked at her glass. She looked at Hecate. “Give it up, HB,” she slurred over the top of her glass. “You don’t have what it takes.”

“I assure you,” Hecate drawled, her own words just a bit more... casual ...than usual. “I have exactly what it takes.”

“All right then,” Dimity said. “On three.”

Together they counted. “One….two...three….”

And both of them downed the contents of their glasses in a single swallow. Even with the sobriety potion, Hecate could feel the buzz as it burned down her throat. Technically, she could go all night (or as long as her bladder would allow, but she was certainly not going to lose because of that! ) “Cheers,” she said hoarsely.

“What the hell, HB? You...how are you…?

Dimity Drill never finished her sentence, for, in the very next moment, she slumped down onto the table, passed out cold.

Barry lifted his head groggily and said, “Yaaaay….you’re the winner, Miss Hardbroom!” before slumping back down to rest his head in his waiting arms.

Hecate paused for the moment, looking around her at the wreckage of her colleagues, and began to laugh softly. They would be much worse for the wear tomorrow. She made a note to ask Cara if she had enough hangover potion for Barry. If not, she’d send some over in the morning.

She sighed. It really was getting late, and she’d better find Cara to make arrangements for transporting her friends back to Cackle’s. Standing, she began to head to the door when a thought occurred to her. She pivoted slightly and pocketed one of Drill’s empty shot glasses as a keepsake. Just in case the sports witch needed a reminder that she’d been drunk under the table.

Then with a swish of her hand, she transferred to the front entrance to find Cara. It had been a wonderful night.
