Chapter 40: A Long Road

Chapter Text

Stanley had hoped that the snow would subside, but it lasted all the way through the rest of California and into Oregon.

He hoped he was going in the right direction. The road he was on seemed to go on forever, and with the snowfall, it all looked the same. Road signs were harder to make out. He was also pretty sure he was on the ‘hallucination’ step of sleep deprivation; a few minutes again, he’d seen what looked like garden gnomes scampering across the road like squirrels.

There was a signpost on the side of the road. Stanley squinted, finding the words hard to make out through the snow. It seemed to say, Gopher Road.

That was good enough for him. He turned and began driving down yet another long road.

Stanley came face-to-face with a chain-link fence. Several large red DO NOT ENTER and KEEP out signs were plastered all over.

He stepped out of the car, throwing his hood up. He decided to ignore the signs—he was good at that. He began looking around for an entrance of some sort.

When he couldn’t find one, he adjusted his gloves. After making sure that the fence wasn’t electric, he began to climb.

Stanley landed hard on his feet, grimacing. When he looked up, he could faintly make out a cabin through the snow.

He swallowed hard. “Well, here goes nothing.”
