“And things…. are just worse now.” Steve clicked his lighter close, frowning at the sound of Max’s voice that drifted through the open hole. “My stepbrother’s always been a dick, but now he’s just angry…all the time and…well he can’t take it out on my Mum so…” Max trailed off and Steve bit the inside of his cheek so hard he thought he tasted blood.
He thought of Billy’s hand on Max’s wrist in the carpark, of the way his eyes shone in the locker room. There’s plenty of bitches in the sea. I’ll be sure to leave you some. There was an edge…something, that unsettled Steve.
“So, he takes it out on you?” Lucas was more perceptive than Steve perhaps gave him credit for.
