Chapter 1: I
Chapter Text
I
"Okay, so I saw Endgame."
'Mhm, how did you feel?"
"Fucking terrible."
This is (Y/n), talking to her Spanish One teacher Mrs. Harold. Mrs. Harold was a young teacher, still in her 20's. She had only been the teacher for 2 years, this ending school year bringing a close on her 3rd. She was (Y/n)'s favorite teacher, and usually gossiped about Superheroes and other things. The younger female trusted her, she knew she could, even with everything that had happened.
"Yeah, I started crying the first 2 minutes, so you know how the rest was."
"Sobbing throughout the movie?"
"Yes."
Mrs. Harold laughed, putting some papers up in her cabinet. (Y/n) sat on a desk, thinking back to the movie, "I hate that movie, I really do. If I could, I would change so many things."
"Wouldn't we all?"
The student nodded, " Like Steve? Where did his character arch go? Going to a girl he barely knew for like a month? Leaving Bucky? And Natasha, where was her funeral? And Tony did not need to do snappy snap."
"Snappy Snap?" She laughed, turning towards her favorite student, "Is that what we're calling it now?"
"It's literally nothing else in my book. I don't even want to think of it."
"Ooookay then."
The first bell rung, and (Y/n) had to get to class. She waved goodbye to Mrs. Harold and left her classroom, starting another day of sophomore year.
Lunchtime. (Y/n)'s favorite period. She had 1st lunch so she got more food for herself. She had just sat down with her plate when her friend looked at her with concern.
"Mrs. Harold left school today."
She looked at them with confusion, "Oh, any reason why?"
"Ya know how she's scared of cotton balls?"
(Y/n) nodded. Everyone knew. She was deathly terrified of them. No one knew why, but if you just brought them up she got chills. Then she frowned, "Don't tell me, some fucked up freshman?"
Her friend nodded, "Yep, dickwad Tobey Johnson. Heard he's getting suspended."
"Should be expelled, hey wanna go to the park after school? Heard that a festival is going on."
"Yeah I'm down for that." They began eating, scrolling through their phone. The two talked about random things here and there before the bell rung. They got up, dumped their plates into the trash and headed out. (Y/n) split ways with them, heading towards 4th period.
"...And that is how cells reproduce."
The final bell rung throughout the classroom, and students quickly got up and left. (Y/n) was always the last to go, not in a rush and she packed her things. She turned to Mr. Daniels, her bio teacher.
"Have you seen Endgame yet?"
"Yes I have, saw it a couple days ago, have you?"
She nodded, "Saw it last night, Cried my eyes out."
He laughed, "Yes, many of us did."
They conversed for a bit, then the student left the classroom, saying her goodbyes to the teacher. Walking down the halls she soon exited the school, heading to her vehicle. She had a black Toyota Tundra to drive, a truck for work really. It was her dad's and before he gave it to her he fixed it all up. (Y/n) smiled, at first she hated the damn thing, but it grew on her.
She hopped in and started the car, texting her mom what she was doing. She saw her friend in the next parking space, smiling at her. They nodded at each other and (Y/n) pulled out first, backing up and leading the way to the festival. She could see a line of cars already forming in the streets for the event. Was this a good idea? Seemed like a bit much for an after-school hangout. But she drove on anyways, going to find a less crowded parking spot and get her steps in. (Y/n) pulled into a parking lot and parked her truck. She pulled out her phone and texted her friend her location.
A few moments later she got a ding. Looking down at her phone, her friend stated that they were parked a block away from (Y/n).
3:40 pm/ Loser : "I'll walk over, wait for me at your big truck"
"Would I have it any other way?" :Better Loser/ 3:41 pm
(Y/n) chuckled, hopping out of her truck and locking it, waiting for her friend. After a couple minutes they came around, and the two walked to the festival.
"THIS IS SO COOL!"
Her friend had somehow gotten a beer, and was dancing drunk under the moonlight. (Y/n) sighed, being the responsible one, and grabbed her friend, pulling them away from the crowd. It was around 7 pm, and she realized she had to drive her friend home.
"YOU ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE."
Or not. (Y/n) recognized her friend's parents, and walked over there to them.
"Hello."
"Oh (Y/n) please tell me you're not drunk also."
"No ma'am. I tried to stop them, but it didn't work out. I'm guessing they drunk dialed or texted you?"
"More like post on Facebook."
(Y/n) sucked in a breath, "Ouch, guessing won't be able to talk to them for a while outside of school."
"Nope. Thank you for trying to take care of them though. Do you need a ride home?"
"Thank you sir, but no, my truck isn't that far. I'm able to drive home."
"Alright, take care (Y/n)"
"You too!"
She left them to head to her truck, walking out of the festival. Seeing people with drinks in her hands she worried about the amount of drunk drivers tonight. But that was a reason for the big truck, to protect her if something happened. She pulled out her phone and called her mom.
"(Y/n)! How's the festival? Everything okay?"
She chuckled, "Guessing you haven't been on Facebook recently?"
"No, why?"
She explained what happened and told her mother that she was heading home, and no, she did not have any alcohol. She said her goodbyes as she reached her vehicle. Unlocking and hopping in, she started her journey home.
As she got onto the streets she kept her eyes peeled. Stopping at a red light, she relaxed some. Music was on the radio, and it was her favorite song. Not a lot of cars out, so she assumed she was going to be just fine.
The light turned green, and she started to drive.
A drunk driver started to fly in front of her, and she hit the brake in the middle of the intersection, missing the car.
"Oh thank god..."
The driver kept going, but before she could regain her breath, a loud honking came from her right, and bright lights blinded her.
(Y/n) knew that the only thing that could really hurt her in this truck was an 18-wheeler.
She also knew in the split second, that that phone call was her last goodbye to her mother.

" -p."
"-ake up!"
"WAKE UP!"
(Y/n) woke with a start. She laid upon a cold surface, like ice, but she wasn't freezing. As she sat up, she was surrounded by darkness.
"Glad you've finally woken up."
She turned around, and sitting on a black throne was the only woman she'd least expected to see.
"Hela?"
The Goddess chuckled, getting up from her seat and strutting over to (Y/n). The girl slowly got up, looking at her, "Where...am I? Are you really Hela?"
"Limbo, my dear, or judgement. And no, I'm not. I'm just Death. I've taken a form which would cause less confusion, and to not scare you."
"You've chosen the Goddess of Death to not scare me?"
"Just go with it!"
"Alright...."
Death cleared her throat, looking at the girl
"You are here because you died."
(Y/n) kinda got that much. Seeing Death and all before her.
"But, I'm here to give you another chance."
"Ah, reincarnation!"
"Not quite, you will still stay in this form."
(Y/n) looked at her confused, "Alright then....what's happening..."
Death sighed, and the darkness changed. She was in a battlefield. Looking up, she saw Chitauri flying around, a giant Ant Man walking through the battle, and more fighting from hundreds of aliens and humans.
(Y/n) wondered where she was before furrowing her brows, "Is...is this the Endgame battlescene in 2023?"
"I knew you'd be perfect." Death praised.
"Perfect for what?" She said, looking at the goddess.
"Perfect for changing the story."
(Y/n) looked at her with wide eyes, "You want me to do what?"
"Change the story, change it to where everyone is safe and sound. Change it to your liking. It's my apology for taking you too soon. You had another 78 years before I was to come and get you. I have been wanting to do this for a while, seeing how a human with such knowledge change course. Of course, I can't do that to reality, the gods would curse me, but they never said anything about fantasy. And this as such a straight timeline, that it's perfect. And you are a perfect candidate, being a.. Marvel fan yourself." Death looked at the girl, a kind but somewhat sinister smile on her face. Worked really well with it being Hela's face and all.
The dead girl looked around the scene, and felt her heart stop, this was when Tony grabbed the stones from Thanos. She felt her heart lurched, she couldn't do this, not in person.
"I'll do it just don't make me watch this again please!"
The scene disappeared, and the world was black again.
Death placed a cold hand on (Y/n)'s shoulder.
"I will send you to 1942, where-"
"Captain America's original time before he goes into the ice during World War II?"
Death looked at the girl, displeased with being interrupted, "Yes, there. You will then live a life of your choosing. You will age slowly to barely aging at all. It's your duty to get to every place you need to be. Your power is your knowledge."
(Y/n) grinned, "I can do this."
"I hope you can. We will see each other when you die again. Goodbye."
The world went completely black.
Notes:
"I didn't ask for this."
"No one does, no one does."
"You did."

(Y/n) woke up in an alleyway. She groaned, shaking her head.
"Jesus Christ..." She got up, dusting herself off. She realized she was wearing trousers, a white button up and suspenders. Her loafers were a nice brown, and she hummed appreciatively. She looked around, seeing the tall brick buildings around her, "Should probably figure out where I am. "
She walked out of the alleyway, whistling.
"1940's New York, well, death was right. but where...."
"Hey! Get back here twerp!" said a gruff voice. The female turned her head and nodded, seeing a blonde twink get chased down another alley way by a man much larger than him. (Y/n) laughed softly to herself, "Steve Rogers at it....should probably help him, don't think Bucky is gonna be around anytime soon."
She jogged over, disregarding the stares she got from everyone. She didn't care what they thought, she could handle a few people. (Y!n) looked down the alleyway, seeing Steve try and defend himself against the man. She then remembered that she had no fighting technique- how was she supposed to help? She weighed her options and grunted, running in blind she supposed. With quick steps, she ran up and grabbed the man's arm before he swung at the blonde boy. The man was surprised as her other hand came round and socked him in the face. (Y/n) let go of him and winced, "Oh god- that hurt a lot more than it should of-"
The bully stumbled some, shaking his head. (Y/n) took a stand and glared at him, "Pick on someone your own size dipshit!"
He frowned, "What some lady like you doing? get back and you won't get hurt."
"I doubt you could fucker! Go on! Get going before I scream and get the cops on ya." She surprised herself, she usually wasn't good at comebacks. The bully glared at Steve and left, and the girl took a relieved sigh.
"Holy shit that was much more than needed." She turned her head, seeing Pre-Serum Steve Rogers before her. She gave him a smile and introduced herself, "Hi, I'm (y/n)."
Steve stared at her in amazement, getting lost in thought before he cleared his throat and nodded, "Uh- Steve- Steve Rogers. Thanks for saving me miss."
"No problem! It wasn't very nice of him to pick a fight with you....may I ask why he did?"
Steve chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head, "He was messing with a lady and wouldn't leave her alone, so I came in. He didn't like that."
"No, of course he didn't, that was very kind of you, most people nowadays aren't as gentlemanly as you." She said softly. A part of her was fangirling though, he really was just like the movies! Steve nodded, then swallowed his spit, "Hey, do you possibly want to get a coffee? As a thank you?"
The female perked up some, "I'd love that- you sure you wanna walk with me though? I'm not exactly...orthodox.."
Steve shrugged, "I shouldn't have a say in what you wear, but I'll admit it's strange for me."
"Well as long as you don't mind, then I'd say we are a go." She smiled, shoving her hands into her pockets. She began walking out to the street, Steve Rogers following behind her. She paused, looking around, before looking at the small man, "So..I have no idea where we're going."
Steve looked at her surprised, he thought she was a native around here, but he guessed not. He gave a half smile and started walking down the street, waving his hand over. She followed behind him now, smiling big. She was walking with Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Well, he wasn't Captain yet, but she supposed that it was her job to get him to that point.
They walked for about 5 minutes before reaching a small cafe. Steve opened the door for her and she snorted, "Such a gentleman, thank you."
"Of course." Steve replied, closing the door behind him after they stepped through. They found a booth and sat down, Steve ordering a black coffee and hers asking for lots of creamer and sugar. (Y/n) looked out the window, watching the people walk by. It was surreal, being in the past in such a way. A past that had a more advanced future.
While she looked out the window, she didn't know that Steve was studying her. She was so strange, for one: wearing pants, most women didn't wear those. two, for getting in a fight. Most women he's had the chance to briefly talk too, they would go call another man or the police to break up a fight (he knows, it's happened a lot.)
"Where are you from?" he asked, breaking the comfortable silence. She turned to him, and he smiled, "You're not from here, I can tell. So, where? Manhattan? Queens?"
"Oh no, I'm...from far away. " She said, dodging the question. Steve raised his brows and pressed on, and she sighed, "I can't really explain it, but I can say that you wouldn't believe me."
He was about to say something, but someone tapped on the glass window. He looked over, and sighed.
"Buck..."
Bucky Barnes was standing on the other side of the window, grinning. He walked around to the door, and Steve hid his face.
"Oh god..."
"Steve! You didn't tell me you had a date!" Barnes exclaimed. (Y/n) looked up and almost fell out of her seat. Bucky Barnes was standing right there next to her. She did go through a Winter Soldier/ Bucky phase like many girls, but she wouldn't ditched Steve for him. She wasn't like that. She doubt that she could even have relationships, considering that Steve was to fall for Peggy, and so many other characters had love interests. So instead, (Y/n) smiled, and stood up, holding her hand out. This surprised Bucky.
"Hi, I'm (Y/n). I saved Steve from getting beat to a pulp, so he's treatin' me to coffee."
Bucky stared at her for a moment, before grinning, shaking her hand, "I'm guessing you're the fighting type like Stevie here huh?"
"Don't call me Stevie." Steve commented. (Y/n) shrugged, sitting back down. The waitress came back with their drinks and the female sipped her creamy coffee, missing the liquid flavors. She was spoiled on chocolate caramel, not this powdered crap. Steve sighed, "Anyways, is there something you need?"
"Yes actually, your momma is needing you. " He looked at Steve with a serious look, and it occurred to (Y/n) where she was exactly. Steve's mother was sick and dying. She sighed softly in her mind, Death sure had a funny mind huh? She looked at Steve and smiled, "If you need to leave, I don't mind. I'll be more than fine. I just gotta find a hotel, got any good recommendations?"
Barnes looked over at her, "You don't have a place to stay?"
She shook her head, "No, not at the moment...I just got into town."
Steve jumped to the occasion, "You can stay with me!"
Both (Y/n) and Bucky looked at the small male, who was blushing, "We have the extra room, and I know momma won't mind. She'd enjoy your company actually."
The female thought about it, thinking more strategically than if Steve was planning on murdering her like normal girls would. It would be a good chance at becoming closer to him and influencing his actions to get on the right track. After a few moments she looked up and smiled, "Sure, I'd love that."

"I didn't ask for this."
"No one does, no one does."
"You did."
Chapter Text
"We are gathered here today to remember the life of Sarah Rogers, beloved wife of Late Joseph Rogers and mother of Steven Rogers...." The priest murmured on, giving his speech. (Y/n) sat beside Steve, who was softly crying. Bucky sat on the other side of him, comforting the male.
(Y/n) had spent the last month or so with Steve, helping take care of Sarah has she battled TB she contracted from the nursing ward. The female was worried she would contract the disease, but had mysteriously gotten a note that said that she wouldn't "get any life threatening diseases, but hey, you're in 1940, don't get a cold." from Death. It didn't say Death persay, but the D was recognizable in her current condition.
Anyways, to her regret, (Y/n) was the one to find Mrs. Rogers in her bed. It was heart breaking, having to call Steve from his fine arts classes. Steve was heartbroken, his mother was the last living family he had in America. He had relatives in Ireland, but, he didn't have the money nor the connections to them. Not to mention there was war brewing, men leaving everyday to join the army. (Y/n) did her best to comfort him until Bucky came. Sure, she got to know Steve in the past month, but she wasn't the best at comforting others.
So it surprised her when Steve leaned onto her shoulder during the funeral procession. She thought he'd go to Bucky considering they have been best friends since, like... diapers. (Y/n) looked over and brought her hand up to his hair and held him. She kissed his head softly, doing her best. Steve seemed to appreciate it, calming down. The rest of the funeral went like that.
"I'm sorry for your loss..." Said the elderly woman. Steve nodded, smiling softly and giving a small thank you. Bucky was with him this time, standing beside him in case it got too hard. (Y/n) watched from the pew, taking a deep breath. She held a bible in her hands, feeling the rough leather binding. She didn't realize someone sat next to her until they spoke.
"Death can be a beautiful thing."
(Y/n) jumped, and looked over. A pale man sat next to her, with dark black hair and brown, almost yellow eyes. She stared at them for a moment in utter confusion, before realizing. Sighing, she rolled her eyes, "You say that cause you're egotistical."
Death looked over a smirked, "What? Don't like my look?"
She shrugged, "You look fine. Why are you here? You should of collected Sarah's soul a while ago."
The man frowned some, before facing the front again, watching Steve talk to friends of his mother, "I'm here because we need to talk. Steve likes you too much."
The girl stared at him, "What do you mean?"
"I mean- he's not going to enlist unless you do."
(Y/n) sucked in a breath, "I have to enlist? Why? Steve should start enlisting after the death of Sarah, I know Bucky is working on getting enlisted right now."
"I just told you, you daft girl- you're living with Steve at the moment. He's not going to want to leave you behind in all this mess. You are going to have to enlist. I know it wasn't in you're plan originally, but it's also the best way to keep up with him until he freezes in the plane." Death explained, groaning.
(Y/n) took in the information, that was very Steve of him. She sighed, looking down at her hands, "Can I least get a cool job, like no hate on the nurses but I don't wanna deal with sick people...not after Sarah.."
Death looked at her softly, before pulling out a manila folder. (Y/n) took it from him and opened it up. She lightly laughed, "Soldier huh? Should of known you would of worked some magic."
"I gotta have some fun. Plus, in this day and age, it's going to be amazing showing those men up."
(Y/n) nodded, smiling, "Thank you for this."
"(Y/n)!" called Bucky. She looked up, seeing the male waving her over. It was time to bury Sarah. The female looked over to say goodbye to Death, but he was gone.
"Come on Steve, let's get you to bed." She said, rubbing the small males shoulders. They had to stop him from crying to hard as to not act his asthma up. Bucky was behind them, shutting the door behind them. (Y/n) set her folder on the living room table and took Steve upstairs so he could rest.
Bucky eyed the folder, she didn't have that earlier. He looked where (Y/n) and Steve left, then back to the folder. He picked it up, and opened it, reading it's contents. His eyes widened in surprise.
(Y/n) came back downstairs, taking a deep breath, "Steve is asleep, got him to calm down..."
She looked at Bucky, who was holding her folder, and giving her a hard look, "You wanna explain this?"
The female bit her bottom lip, "Um...I've enlisted as a soldier and they accepted me?"
"(Y/n), what do you mean you're a soldier for the US army? Front lines? Are you insane?" Bucky raised his voice slightly, making (Y/n) hardened her eyes, glaring at him.
"I'm doing what's right. Fighting for my country, for the lives that are being lost as we speak. Do you know what's happening over there? No- you don't! This isn't some god glory days this is war!'
"I know that! But you can't be serious, you aren't made to fight!"
"I'm not made to fight? Why is that? Because I'm a woman?"
"No!"
"Then why James-"
"Because Steve needs you dammit! And I can't be here if I'm drafted!" He said, looking at her. (Y/n) looked at him with wide eyes, which became narrow. She grabbed her folder from Buck .
"What I do..is not of your concern, or control.....I know you're being drafted Bucky...but goddammit, I must do this. I'm fighting...and you never know, maybe Steve won't need me at all."
Notes:
"I didn't ask for this."
"No one does, no one does."
"You did."
Chapter Text
(Y/n) sat in her chair reading a newspaper, this was the 4th- no, 5th? - she lost count- enrollment facility. Steve was trying to get enlisted, which hasn't been going well for him. He had so many ailments that just his asthma got him rejected. She looked over her paper and saw the twink, shirtless as he waited to be called up. She couldn't hear his talking, but from the room and how it was situated, she guessed she was at the beginning of the movie now. She sighed, watching him get called up. He was so....tiny. When they get to beefcake Steve, it's gonna be a whole 'nother story.
Steve stood in the front of the line now, watching the interaction between him and the 4F doctor. He was going to get rejected again, no matter how many times he changed locations. (Y/n) almost couldn't watch, considering she's seen this happen so many times. It was sad, seeing Steve's disappointment as he got rejected over and over.
She heard the stamp go down, and Steve got out of line, grabbing his shirts and shoes. (Y/n) set the paper down and walked to him, rubbing his shoulder, "It's okay Steve, we'll try again later. How about we go see a movie huh?"
He nodded, dejectedly, putting on his clothes, "I just don't understand, they need soldiers- so why won't they take me?"
"I don't know, but I know you're destined for something great." She stated, walking him out of the building.
Steve and (Y/n) sat down in the theater with some popcorn and pop (god she wanted to say soda). Steve had a stupid little smirk on his face. (Y/n) sat back, spreading her legs out man spread style. She was wearing trousers again, so she didn't show anything, except maybe get a few glares from women and men.
A commercial came on before the movie, and (Y/n) sighed, this was going to get interesting.
"War continues to ravage Europe. But help is on the way. Every able-bodied young man is lining up to serve his country. Even little Timmy is doing his part collecting scrap metal. Nice work, Timmy!" said the announcer.
A male voice called through, "Who cares? Play the movie already!"
Steve looked down and spoke quietly, but not quiet enough for (Y/n) to miss, "Hey, you wanna show some respect?"
"Meanwhile, overseas, our brave boys are showing the Axis powers that the price freedom is never too high."
"Let’s go! Get on with it! Hey, just start the cartoon!" said the jerk. (Y/n) groaned softly as Steve turned around some, glaring at the man.
"Hey buddy, you wanna shut up?!"
The jerk looked over and glared at him, getting up and leaving. Steve turned back to the silver screen, leaving (Y/n) to stir in embarrassment. She got up, heading to the restroom as the announcer finished his segment.
"Together with Allied forces, we’ll face any threat, no matter the size."
After the movie was over, (Y/n) stretched, sighing, "That was a good cartoon, wasn't it Steve?"
"Oh yeah, it was even better after that guy left." He stated, smirking. (Y/n) looked down at him, making Steve sigh, "Yes, I know what you're going to say."
"Then say it punk."
"I shouldn't be getting into fights if I'm planning on getting into the big one." He said, rolling his eyes. The female smiled, making Steve look to the side some. (Y/n) turned her head and smiled, "Hey, I'll be right back."
He looked to her line of sight and rolled his eyes, "Don't demolish those kids (Y/n)."
"I won't, it's just some ball...and cash." She grinned, leaving the male alone. Once she was gone, a hand landed on Steve's shoulder. He turned to the owner and gulped some. It was the jerk from earlier. He looked pissed. Unspokingly, they went to the alleyway on the side. They began fighting, Steve still getting up every time he got knocked down.
"You just don't know when to give up, do you?"
"I can do this all day." Steve commented, he went to attack him but didn't make it.
"Hey! Pick on someone your own size!" said a familiar voice. Steve looked up and saw Bucky in a suit. Bucky and the jerk fought it out some, but Buck won, and the other scrambled away.
Bucky leaned back on his right leg sighing, "Sometimes, I just think you like getting punched."
"I had him on the ropes." Steve rolled his eyes again. They heard footsteps running towards them and looked towards the entrance of the alley way, seeing (Y/n).
"There you are! I leave for one second and you're getting punched!" she said, looking worried. Steve smiled some, and so did Bucky.
"Come on, I'm not that weak."
"Steve you can't even breath right."
Bucky snorted at that, making the female smile. The brunette male picked up Steve's files, eyeing it like he did with (Y/n)'s.
"How many times is this? (Y/n) I thought I told you to stop this." He criticized, giving a warning look to the female and Steve. He opened it up and read over what Steve had put down.
"Oh, you’re from Paramus now? You know it’s illegal to lie on the enlistment form. And seriously, Jersey?" He said, rolling his eyes. (Y/n) took the file from him and tucked it under her arm. Her and Steve both looked at Bucky and looked at him sadly. Buck got drafted, and he just got his orders today.
"You get your orders?" Steve asked.
Bucky nodded, " The one-o-seventh. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow."
"Oooo Sergeant. Spicy." (Y/n) commented, earning strange looks from the men. She waved them away. "It means hot...ya know..handsome."
"oh...anyways...I should be going. " Steve said sadly.
Bucky rolled his eyes again, putting a shoulder over Steve and (Y/n), "Come on, man. My last night! Gotta get you cleaned up!"
Steve looked confused, "Why? Where are we going?"
"Yeah, where are we going huh?" (Y/n) asked.
"The future."

"I didn't ask for this."

The three of them were walking around the exposition. The two boys were conversing about dates, and it made (Y/n)'s heart twinge just a little. Seeing them interact like this, is something she'd treasure forever. She's seen the other parts, the ones that never made the cut of the film. The sweeter moments between Bucky and Steve. The ones where she was included as well.
"I don’t see what the problem is. You’re about to be the last eligible man in New York. You know, there’s three and a half million women here." Bucky commented, looking at the small blonde.
Steve sighed softly, a little emotion in his voice, "Well, I’d settle for just one. "
What (Y/n) didn't know was that Steve was looking her way slightly. Her eyes were focused on all the cool gadgets. Not even in her future did they have this tech. Howard Stark was another thing on his own.
Bucky huffed, grabbing both of his friends' shoulders, "Good thing I took care of that."
In front of them was three people. Two females, and someone that wasn't in the original film, a male. (Y/n) felt her heart drop, as she glared at Bucky.
"You got me a date as well??"
"Come on, he isn't bad." He said softly.
"Hey Bucky!" Said Connie.
Steve grumbled, "What did you tell her about me?"
"Only the good stuff." Bucky grinned.
The music began playing, and (Y/n) was stuck with a male she didn't even know. He was tall and skinny, with red hair and freckles. He was cute, but not really her type.
The expo announcer was real excited for his job, "Welcome to the Modern Marvels Pavilion and the World of Tomorrow. A greater world. A better world."
"Mhm, greaaaaat." (Y/n) said under her breath.
"Did you say something?" Her date asked. She shook her head, and turned back to the stage.
"Oh, my God! It’s starting! " Connie exclaimed.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Howard Stark!" said a women. The crowd went crazy as the man himself appeared. He kissed the women and took her mic. There was a random women that said she loved Howard. (Y/n) snorted under her breath, "And I love you, random citizen."
Howard smiled, "Ladies and gentlemen, what if I told you that in just a few short years, your automobile won’t even have to touch the ground at all."
The female helpers took off the wheels. Howard turned to them and thanked them, "With Stark robotic reversion technology, you’ll be able to do just that. "
The car began to hover, and (Y/) heard Bucky gasp softly. She nudged Steve who was on her other side. He looked at her, and held up 3 fingers. Counting down, once it hit one, the car fell. Howard laughed awkwardly, "I did say a few years, didn’t I?"
Steve looked at her wide eyed, while she laughed along with the crowd. She used her index finger at the recruitment center, giving him a smile. Steve took her hand and they went, forgetting about their dates.
(Y/n) smiled, hanging back as Steve went to the mirror where a couple just stood. But he was a bit too short for it. She knew it was to be some symbolism here, but she grinned. Coming up behind Steve, she picked the light boy up, allowing him to see himself in the mirror. Steve laughed, "Thank you."
"Any time."
" Come on. You’re kind of missing the point of a double date. We’re taking the girls dancing. " Said Bucky. They turned around and (Y/n) set Steve down.
"Well what if I don't wanna go dancing?" She said, crossing her arms.
Buck chuckled, "You can do whatever you want with your date doll."
She huffed, "What if I don't wanna date?"
"That's your own problem."
Steve took a breath, "You go on, we'll catch up."
Bucky looked at his best friend with a stern look, crossing his arms, "You're really gonna do this again?"
"Well it's a fair, I'm gonna try my luck." He shrugged.
"As who? Steve from Ohio? They’ll catch you. Or worse, they’ll actually take you. " Bucky complained. (Y/n) looked between the two, making the mistake of catching Buck's eye.
"And you! I thought I asked you to snap this behavior out of him!"
Steve was starting to get worked up, "Look, I know you don’t think I can do this."
"This isn’t a back alley, Steve. It’s war!" The brunette turned his attention back towards the blonde.
"I know it’s a war. You don’t have to tell me."
"Why are you so keen to fight? There are so many important jobs."
"What am I gonna do? Collect scrap metal…"
"Yes!"
" …in my little red wagon."
"Why not?"
"I’m not gonna sit in a factory, Bucky."
"I don’t…"
"Bucky, come on! There are men laying down their lives. I got no right to do any less than them. That’s what you don’t understand. This isn’t about me."
"Right. Cause you got nothing to prove." Bucky sighed.
(Y/n) finally cut in, "Buck..."
"Hey, Sarge! Are we going dancing?" Connie called, stopping (Y/n) from getting her input in.
"Yes, we are." He turned back to Steve "Don’t do anything stupid until I get back."
Steve smiled, "How can I? You’re taking all the stupid with you."
"You’re a punk."
Buck hugs (Y/n). He whispered into her ear, "Please keep him safe."
"I will, don't worry."
He then hugs Steve. The blonde chuckled, "Jerk. Be careful."
Bucky pulls away, and walks to the girls. Steve calls out to him, as (Y/n) stands behind her blonde friend. "Don't win the war till I get there!"
Their friend salutes and walks with the girls. (Y/n) takes a deep breath. Steve doesn't know it yet, Bucky doesn't know it yet.
But shit was about to get real.

"You did."
Chapter Text
Steve was taken to the medical examination room. (Y/n) was nervous, the doctors wouldn't let her be apart of this. The anxiety was building up in her. She needed to be in there. She looked towards where Steve entered and saw the doctor leave. This was her chance.
Quickly she entered, making Steve jump, "(Y/n)? What are you-"
"Shhhhhhh, sh! I just had to come in. The anxiety was building up in me-"
"Why- shit is there a problem-"
An officer enters and they both look up at him, but he was just making way for a tinier man. The female felt her heart drop, but for good reasons. The smaller man was Dr. Abraham Erskine, the one that would change Steve's life forever.
The doctor thanks the officer and faces the two, but mostly Steve, "So, you want to go overseas. Kill some Nazis."
"Excuse me?" Steve asks, not expecting that.
"Dr. Abraham Erskine." He walks over and shakes Steve's hand, then does the same for (Y/n), "I represent the Strategic Scientific Reserve."
"Steve Rogers, and this is my friend (Y/n)....Wait what's your last name again?"
"I told you! (L/n)! Jeez Steven Grant Rogers."
While they were bickering, Erskine was going through Steve's files. It made Steve nervous, "Where are you from?"
"Queens, 73rd street and Utopia Parkway. Before that, Germany." He looks up at the blonde, "This troubles you?"
Shaking his head, Steve disagrees. It made (Y/n) smile. She's been here for a short while, but she knows that if it where really anyone else, they would of had a strong sense of nativism. She watched as Erskine flipped through Steve's papers again.
"Where are you from, Mr. Rogers? Mmm? Is it New Haven? Or Paramus? Five exams in five different cities." He seemed to be interested in a different thing about the locations though. While (Y/n) knew, Steve did not, and worried about being thrown in jail.
Steve looked at the papers with a nervous look, "That might not be the right file."
He shook his head, looking back at Steve, "No, it’s not the exams I’m interested in. It’s the five tries. But you didn’t answer my question. Do you want to kill Nazis?"
"Is this a test?"
"Yes."
Steve shook his head, "I don’t wanna kill anyone. I don’t like bullies. I don’t care where they’re from."
(Y/n) snorted in her head, That honorable goal will change.
"Well, there are already so many big men fighting this war. Maybe what we need now is the little guy, huh? I can offer you a chance."
HE WON'T BE LITTLE SOON.
The trio exit the room. Steve right behind the doctor and (Y/n) right behind Steve. The walk up to a desk and Erskine messes with Steve's papers some more, "Only a chance."
Steve pauses, and looks at (Y/n). This was new, was he doubting himself? She gave him a smile and nodded, "You're not going alone Steve, don't worry."
"RIght, Bucky.."
(Y/n) felt her heart drop- I FUCKING FORGOT TO TELL HIM I'M ENLISTED AS WELL.
Steve turned back to the doctor and told him he'd take the chance. Erskine smiled, "Good. So where is the little guy from actually?"
"Brooklyn."
Erskine stamps into Steve's files and hands them to him, "Congratulations soldier."
The blonde and female peer into the files to see that Steve was accepted into the US. Army.
The two got back home, joyful for the victory they received. (Y/n) knew that she would have to tell Steve soon, they would be leaving in a few days. Erskine gave them time to pack, and then they would head to the US army camp and train. It's where Steve would also meet Peggy for the first time. It made (Y/n)'s heart twist. Sure, she was Steve's love interest, not to mention the whole "I had a date." thing, but...they didn't know each other for that long. Hell, Peggy found someone else to love! She sighed, she wondered how this would turn out with her.
Steve was smiling and giggling, grabbing some water from the sink. While his back was turned, (Y/n) grabbed her own file that Death gave her at the funeral.
"(Y/n), I think tonight, we should drink-" He said, turning back to the female. Seeing her holding a manilla folder, he was confused.
"What are you doing with my..." Seeing that it wasn't his, cause his was on the other side of them, he turned back to (Y/n) with concern and curiosity. "(Y/n)...what is that..."
She handed him the folder, and Steve took it. He set his glass down and open it up. He felt his heart drop some.
"You're....a nurse?" He asked shakily.
The female shook her head, "No...I'm a soldier."
"How." he asked harshly, looking at her with a hurtful glare, "Women can't be in the army. They can be nurses or officers- but a goddamn soldier? Did you lie on your forms-"
"No Steve, it says right there that I'm a female-"
"Then what? Did you sleep with the Enlistement Officer- how my god you did!"
"Steven Grant Rogers! How dare you! Who I fuck with is none of your concern. Two, No, I did not. I fucking applied to be a soldier and I got approved."
"Did Bucky know?" He asked still angry and pissed.
That made (Y/n) falter some, and she looked to the side, "He was the first to find out."
"When?"
".......After Sarah's funer-"
"AFTER MY OWN MOTHER'S FUNERAL? YOU'VE KNOWN FOR MONTHS, BUCKY KNEW FOR MONTHS, AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME?" He yelled at her with such rage, his face getting red.
(Y/n) got worried, "Steve calm down your gonna hurt yourself."
"No- I won't calm down! You fucking enlisted in the army, and didn't tell me! I know you act like a man most of the time but I thought you had some lady in you! I guess not!"
"Steve-"
"I thought you were my friend! I thought we told each other everything! I trusted you- I trusted that I would have at least one friend if I got to come back, but now I don't? It's hard enough that Bucky got drafted but now you got to fucking do this-"
"STEVE."
"WHAT."
He faltered, seeing tears in (Y/n)'s eyes. She was trying not to break down.
"I can handle...anyone else yelling...but not yours..please..stop...let me explain..."
Steve stared at her for a few more beats before sighing. He took a deep breath to calm himself down, "Explain."
(Y/n) took a few moments to regain herself, wiping away her tears. Who knew being yelled at by Steve would sting so much?
"I enlisted in the army because I believe in a future where women can if they want. I'm strong enough to do so. We're losing men in a war that's already been going on for 2 years. We've only been in the war itself for a few months. While women take the factories and malls, we're slowly losing men on the front lines. Steve, you got something to prove, and so do I. Do you understand now?"
She didn't tell him that he was going to become an icon. She didn't tell him that Death had her go because if she didn't Steve would regret it and not go. She didn't tell him that if she didn't go she wouldn't see him for another 66 years until 2011. She couldn't now. Maybe when she sees him again.
Steve was silent for a few minutes. He was running the words in his head like a treadmill. Soon, he took a big sigh, and looked at her, "Looks like we're gonna change the future huh?"
That made (Y/n) smile, and she laughed softly.
"You have no idea."

"I didn't ask for this."

"You did."
Chapter Text
After a long trip to the training camp, both Steve and (Y/n) were exhausted. Walking in with many other recruits, they all sluggishly went to the middle of the field. Colonel Chester Phillips stood before them.
"Thank you men-"
"-and woman."
"-for getting your asses over here. For today you'll head to the barracks and get everything settled. After that it's hell!"
(Y/n) sighed, then perked up. Where would she sleep? She looked around at the men surrounding her, she definitely wasn't spending her time with these bastards. Some looked confused as to why she was with them.
She looked forward again, drowning out what the Colonel was saying. She wished she could just pull a fanfic and time skip, but it seemed she really was gonna have to work on this. Watching what the old man was saying, she noticed someone beside him. Pale skin, dark hair, green eyes- THAT FUCKER WAS DEATH.
He saw her and gave her a shit eating grin. The thing was that no one seemed to notice him except her. Why was he here? He began to prance around the soldiers around him, and (Y/n) widened her eyes. Oh no, he was trying to make her laugh.
And it was starting to work.
He made silly faces as the colonel's voice droned on and on about the war. The female pressed her fist to her mouth, giving off silent laughs. She turned her head from the scene. Steve gave her a concern look, but she waved him off. Once calm she looked back up.
Death was giving the colonel bunny ears.
Actual bunny ears.
She quickly turned her laughs into coughs, breaking the silence of the superiors monotone voice. All eyes turned to her, who held a red face. She gave a small smile.
"Sorry...dust flying everywhere..."
Phillips gave her a look, "Nurses are on the other side of the-"
"No! No I'm a soldier actually."
That made the men around her laugh, except for Steve, who gave her a sad look. She frowned.
"I am. I got approved and everything."
Phillips looked at her, "You're (L/n), correct?"
"Yes sir."
"Come here."
She sighed, and handed Steve her bag. Walking up to the small stage they set up for him, she felt herself visioning where this would go.
(Y/n) stood tall beside Phillips. He looked at her, up and down. Not to check her out but to see her physical form. He looked into her eyes. They held determination, a look that said "Try me fucker."
He looked back towards the crowd.
"This woman is braver than you'll ever be."
Well that surprised her, and the men standing on the dusty ground. Phillips held a small smile.
"Women usually are. The natives would actually hand their prisoners to women for how vicious they were. It's only of the law do many women join the Red Cross. But some women will push the limits. "
"Well- Behaved women seldom make history." (Y/n) said. She paused. Shit. That was a future quote. Sorry Thatcher.
It made Phillips smile more.
"That they don't. You will be staying in the women barracks with Agent Peggy Carter."
WEE DOGGY OH BOY
(Y/n) said her good nights to Steve before heading to her new room. Her roommate was out for the moment, letting her stir in her thoughts. Her roommate was fucking Peggy Carter. Steve's love interest, the one who will found SHIELD. The one who hung out with Howard Stark. How had her own TV show- which (Y/n) is sad to say that she never watched. Oh god is she gonna have to go through that? Of course she was, she wasn't just gonna jump to Captain Marvel was she? Ohhhh to be immortal...
While (Y/n) was having a crisis, Peggy returned. Finding her roommate staring at the bed with such intensity worried her.
"Um....hello?"
That snapped the girl from her thoughts. She whipped her head up and stared at Peggy with wide eyes. A small blush coated her cheeks, "Ah! You must be Peggy!"
And you must be painfully American, "I am, you are (Y/n) (L/n) correct? A soldier?"
"Yes!- I am both." She said with a slight laugh.
"Not many of us soldiers around." Peggy said. (Y/n) looked up at her, remembering that she was a secret agent. Damn she was cool.
"Yeah. That's why I here though- to make a difference. Hopefully after the war, women will be encouraged to join the army."
Even though I didn't even really apply, Death just coughed up a form- SPEAKING OF WHICH-
"Well, even if the war ends tomorrow, we should get to know each other. Darling who did you hair?"
(Y/n)'s hands went to her (h/l) hair. It was very (Long/short), but it still looked like a rats nest went through it. She sighed, "I wasn't given time to make it look nice. (I just got it our of my way/ ran some gel through it)"
"Well no matter, come here and let me fix it up."
And that's how you spent the night with Peggy Carter doing you hair.

Chapter Text
(Y/n) sat up in bed. Peggy was kind enough to wake her before the generals began yelling at everyone. It made the girl groan, it felt worse than getting up for school.
School. It made her pause. She looked at her hands.
Just a few months ago...hell, almost a year really at this point, she was...alive. In her world. She did school work and she ate in a cafeteria. She had a best friend, teachers. A mom and dad. They...must of been devastated...It wasn't just some "I woke up and I found myself in another world" fanfic. She died. She had a funeral, people grieved over her.
She hoped people grieved.
(Y/n) looked up, watching Peggy get ready for the day. This was normal for her. Working to survive, to live.
She wondered if this was going to be her life now. What was she saying- of course it was! She had to change the story line, along with keeping it on track. She had to make Steve freeze- she had to let Bucky fall- just so they could reach a future where they could be happy.
Though, she supposed if she saw Death any time soon, she'd ask what was happening in her world.
All of the recruits stood in a line on the field. (Y/n) stood beside Steve, smiling at him. It was weird for her, considering to even film this part they had Chris Evans kneel down on a box cause he's freakishly tall. Beside her though was a little twink that was actually trying to make himself taller. It warmed her heart, and she softly laughed at him. Steve blushed in embarrassment.
Peggy came around, and (Y/n) instantly wised up. But a part of her was sooooo ready for this.
"Recruits, attention!" Then men soon followed up like (Y/n), "Gentlemen, and lady, I’m Agent Carter. I supervise all operations for this division."
A man snorted, "What’s with the accent, Queen Victoria? Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army. "
Peggy came up to him, frowning. It made (Y/n) smile, "Ohhh he's gonna get it."
They ignored her, "What's your name soldier?"
"Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty." He said with a smirk.
"Step forward Hodge." Peggy commanded. Hodge did so, and (Y/n) made sure that Steve was watching.
"Put your right foot forward."
That made the male smirk more, "Mmm... we gonna wrassle-"
"wrestle oh my god learn to speak" (Y/n) muttered.
"-cause I got a few moves I know you'll like." he also sent a wink to (Y/n), making the girl groan in disgust.
Then the was punched in the face by Peggy. The other female let out a loud laugh as Hodge fell to the floor.
"That's what you get!"
The men realized that Agent Peggy Carter was not to be messed with cause she was a woman. It also set them straight for (Y/n), who didn't seem afraid to say what was on her mind. Everyone watched as a jeep came up and sat Col. Phillips. He nodded in the direction of Peggy, showing her respect.
"I see you're breaking in candidates. That's good!" He turned to the poor weeping man on the floor, "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention 'til somebody comes tells you what to do. "
Hodge does so, and soon everyone is back to standing straight in line. (Y/n) even calmed down from her laughing fit. The Colonel now stood in front of everyone, looking down on each one.
"General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men…" He looks at Steve, and it makes the female beside him get protective, "And because they’re gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers."
His speech made (Y/n) realize something.
She had to go through this week. The movie had a montage of the week while he spoke, but but since this wasn't the movie....
"Your week in hell...begins now!"
The first day was over, and (Y/n) was in the mess hall eating. She was sore all over. Across from her was Steve, who was also struggling. They looked at each other, and after a few moments they softly laughed.
"A part of me hoped this week would blow by." She admitted, looking at her food.
"It's not gonna." said Steve. He looked at her, before looking around and landing on Peggy. He stared at her for a few moments. (Y/n) moved her gaze from the food and followed his line of sight, only to sigh.
"She's really nice. Helped fix my hair last night."
"Really?" He said without looking at (Y/n).
The female nodded, "Yep, now it doesn't look like a rat's nest like usual."
That got his attention, and he looked at (Y/n), "You're hair doesn't look like a rat's nest."
"Please, everything I do is unorthodox, my hair is the biggest rats nest...well, until Peggy helped.."
She smiled, eating some of her food, "She almost makes me want to put on a dress..."
The blonde's eyebrows shot up. (Y/n) didn't wear dresses. She hated them with a passion, admitting that she didn't feel comfortable in such clothing.
But Steve will admit that he's thought about (Y/n) in a dress, one with polka dots and matching heels, her hair fixed nicely. Maybe even a hat. He realized he was staring and looked back down.
"You'd look pretty.." he softly spoke, making (Y/n) blush some.
"You think all women are pretty." She teased.
Steve shot up and became flustered, making the girl laugh. The rest of the night until bedtime was filled with jokes and laughter.

Chapter Text
(Y/n) spent days trying not kill her fellow recruits for this damn program. They kept taunting Steve since he worked so hard keeping up. She herself was doing okay, the men didn't dare mess with her, but they didn't get the memo for Steve. Right now they were running the perimeter of the camp, a Sergeant and Peggy was in a jeep in front of them. (Y/n) was ready to just punch the man in the face. She looked up, seeing the flagpole. She realized that if she didn't join Steve she'd have to run too.
Fuck running.
"Pick up the pace, ladies! Let’s go! Double time! Come on! Faster! Faster! Move! Move!" Hollered the Sergeant. The Jeep slowed down in front of the flag pole, "Squad, halt! That flag means we’re only at the halfway point. First man to bring it to me gets a ride back with Agent Carter. Move, move!"
The men all clambered up to the pole. (Y/n) caught her breath, looking at them. She looked at Steve, and smiled. She made a motion of pulling, and he got the hint.
All of the other soldiers tried but failed, making the sergeant laugh at their attempts, "If that’s all you got, this army’s in trouble! Get up there, Hodge! Come on! Get up there! Nobody’s got that flag in 17 years! Now fall back into line! Come on, fall in! Let’s go! Get back into formation!"
(Y/n) and Steve didn't walking up to the pole. She heard the asshole call them to fall back end, but the female gave him a wicked smile. The female held the pole while Steve pulled the pin. She eased it down and Steve took the flag off. He handed it to Duffy, and the duo hopped into the jeep.
"Thank you sir." they both say as the car drives.
(Y/n) begins laughing, "Did you see the look on their faces? Oh my god!"
She let her laughter continue, unaware of two set of eyes watching her. Steve snorted, "You did good thinking of that."
"Of course I did, I'm tired of running with sweaty men! Well, except of you of course." She nudged his shoulder, making him smile more. Peggy watched in amazement on how they interacted.
"Are you...sweet on each other?" Peggy asked, looking at them. It caught the duo's attention, and (y/n) was quick to shake her head.
"Oh know, we're just best friends. I saved Steve from getting pummeled in an alleyway and he treated me to coffee as a thanks. After that, we've been inseparable."
"Yeah, in what, a year-?"
"Yeah a year-"
"-She's helped me out so much, with everything. Applying for the army, with rent-"
Peggy widened her eyes, "Rent?"
(Y/n) nodded, "Yeah, we live together back in New York with another friend of ours, Bucky."
They got a bit quiet after that, thinking about Buck. It had been a while since they've seen him. He was fighting, and they both worried for his life. Well, Steve more than (Y/n). She knew what was gonna happen, of course, some of it she really didn't want to happen. Her mind began to trail off as Steve informed of Peggy of his best friend since diapers. When (Y/n) tells Steve in the future about herself, would he hate her? For not saving Bucky? For letting him go into the ice? Would he never want to see her again? What about others? They would know too? What if she never told them? That couldn't be good for herself, she was having trouble keeping her mouth shut as it is.
She really needed to talk to Death.
Everyone was doing push ups. The men were going good, while (Y/n) and Steve struggled some. The female hated running, but she hated push ups anymore. God dammit Death you couldn't give her an easier job?
Peggy was walking back and forth, yelling insults as encouragement. It really didn't do anything for the female though.
"Faster, ladies! Come on. My grandmother has more life in her, God rest her soul. Move it!" she barked. (Y/n) gave her glare, and grunted, "Women shouldn't- be used- as a demeaning- term!"
Peggy gave her a smile, before going back to insulting the men. While they worked out, Phillips and Erskine were walking towards the group. The female found herself catching the conversation, which surprised her as they were a good few feet away from them.
"You’re not really thinking about picking Rogers, are you?" criticized Phillips.
Erskine sighed, "I am more than just thinking about it. He is the clear choice."
"When you brought a woman to fight onto my base, I let it slide. When you brought a ninety-pound asthmatic onto my army base, I let it slide. I thought, what the hell? Maybe he’ll be useful to you, like a gerbil. I never thought you’d pick him. The girl though, I understand. She's strong."
WAIT A DAMN MINUTE.
That made the female stumbled, but Peggy let it slide as she told everyone to get up. Steve struggled to be like his fellow recruits. (y/n) helped him as she kept listening.
" You stick a needle in that kids arm and it’s gonna go right through him."
The topic was off of her, good. She didn't know what was happening. There was only one super-soldier- for now anyways. They didn't have enough to do both.
Peggy called for everyone to get in line as they did jumping jacks. The female gave a glare to the other. She had to bandage herself so she stayed tuck and not flop everywhere, small or not. They had discussed this, and Peggy was so kind to help her get in her bindings. It made the men sad, as they were gross, but it made her, Peggy, and Steve feel better.
Steve struggled still, making the Colonel sigh, "Look at that. He’s making me cry."
You make me cry.
"I am looking for qualities beyond the physical."
Good for you!
"Do you know how long it took to set up this project?"
too long?
"Yeah, I know."
HOW LONG TELL ME.
"All the groveling I had to do in front of Senator What’s-His-Name’s committees?"
Woooooow so professional
"Brandt. Yes, I know. I am well aware of your efforts."
"Then throw me a bone. Hodge passed every test we gave him. He’s big, he’s fast, he obeys orders. He’s a soldier."
"He’s a bully."
DAMN STRAIGHT
"You don’t win wars with niceness, doctor." (Y/n) was watching Phillips and let out a huff of air. She watched as he grabbed a hand grenade, "You win war with guts."
He tossed it at the recruits, yelling grenade. All of the soldiers ran away, except (Y/n) and Steve. Steve ran towards it covering it with his body. He yelled for everyone to get back, while (Y/n) sighed.
"It's a dummy Stevie." She explained when nothing went off.
"All clear, back into formation!" an officer said. Steve got up and (Y/n) stood beside him.
The small blonde look at Erskine and Phillips, "Is this a test?"
Erskine looked to Phillips about his conformation. The Colonel sighed, "He's still skinny."
Erskine came into Peggy's and (Y/n)'s bunk to speak with her about the procedure. She asked why she was even chosen, and he said that she was like Steve, knowing about power and how to handle it properly. They spoke for a while before he went to Steve and speak to him. Peggy was out and wouldn't be back until later. The female sighed, and laid on her bed. So many thoughts were running through her head.
"Stop worrying, gives you wrinkles." said a male voice. (Y/n) shot up, and found a black male sitting in a lounge chair Peggy had placed. His brown eyes had a golden hue.
"Can you not pick a form and stick with it?" the girl huffed, looking at him.
"Whaaaaat? Want me to change? I can be whatever you want darling." He said with a sultry voice. It made her gag.
"Don't flirt, doesn't work."
"Hey that's my best line!"
She rolled her eyes with a smile, "Anyways...I have some questions."
He nodded, allowing her to continue.
(Y/n) took a deep breath, and rubbed her hands, "Will they hate me? In the future?"
Death rose his brows, and sighed. He rubbed his neck, "Darling I'm Death, not Prophet. I wouldn't know since you've been inputted. That was the whole point of adding you, see how you change the story."
"Well- am I allowed to tell them who I am in the future?" She asked, looking into Death's golden brown hues.
"That's up to you. What you tell them and how you change the story is all on you. I can't interfere. I only collect souls."
(Y/n) sighed and flopped back onto the bed, "Okay- what about Erskine? He wants me to be a super-soldier too!"
"That- I can give you advice. You have no reason to be a super-soldier, so whatever they do, insist that Steve goes first."
She nodded, "Okay, thank you..."
"Alright...Well I should get going-"
"Wait!" the female shot up, looking worried. It made Death pause, but he stayed silent.
He watched as the girl struggled to push the words out. He watched as tears began to gather in her eyes, and she began to shake. He watched her dig her short nails into her legs, trying not to let the dam break.
He felt his heart break when she asked how her family was.
He felt his heart completely shatter when she looked at him wide sad, desperate eyes.
"Well..." he started softly, "You're friend is really depressed....but she's pulling through..your parents though...they've taken a hard hit. You're mother blames herself for not picking you up when you said there was alcohol at the festival, and your father began drinking...the...funeral was lovely though. They surrounded you with flowers and-"
He stopped when a sob broke from the girl, and she gripped her bed sheets. Death got up, and walked over. He comforted the girl, who latched onto him tightly. He felt his heart turn into dust as she sobbed into his clothes.
Which was strange for him.
As he hadn't had a heart in centuries.

Chapter Text
Steve, Peggy, and (y/n) were all scrunched up in a car driving through Brooklyn. (Y/n) and Steve were thinking of memories as they drove, laughing some.
"I know this neighborhood. I got beat up in that alley. And that parking lot. And behind that diner." commented Steve.
(Y/n) snorted, "Where didn't you get beat up?"
Peggy looked at him, "Did you have something against running away?"
The male shrugged, "You start running they’ll never let you stop. You stand up, push back. Can’t say no forever, right?"
Peggy nodded her head, "I know a little of what that’s like. To have every door shut in your face."
"Preach." said (Y/n), raising her hand in prayer.
Steve began to splutter, "I guess I just don’t why you’d wanna join the army if you’re a beautiful dame. Or a beautiful… a woman. An agent, not a dame! You are beautiful, but…"
"You have no idea how to talk to a woman, do you?"
"This is the longest conversation I’ve had with one. Women aren’t exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on. "
"STEVEN." cried (y/n), staring at him incredously.
"What?" he said.
"I AM A WOMAN. WE HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR ABOUT A YEAR. I AM YOUR LONGEST FEMALE CONVERSATION."
"Well.." he trailed off, "You act like a male a lot."
The girl bit her finger, "Steven....Grant...Rogers...."
"Yes?"
"I'm going to beat your ass into next Tuesday, and you can add another alley to your list in this neighborhood." she threatened, "Don't test me twink."
Peggy coughed into her hand, "You must have danced?"
The male turned his attention back to Peggy, "Well, asking a woman to dance always seems so terrifying. And the past few years just didn’t seem to matter that much. Figured I’d wait."
"For what?"
"The right partner."
They leave it at that, Peggy catching Steve's gaze towards the other female in the car, whom was muttering how Steve was a punk ass bitch.
It was silent for a few moments, before the male spoke up, "Did you really call me a twink?'
"Yes I did."
"What's a twin-"
The car stopped, and Peggy hopped out. (Y/n) followed after her, and Steve got out last. In front of them stood an antique shop. Kinda made (y/n) snicker, in her future all of their modern furniture would be antique. Peggy lead them through and Steve questioned why they were here in the first place. They followed Peggy inside, and the little owner and Peggy speak in code. (Y/n) started to become excited, and out of instinct she grabbed Steve's hand.
"It's happening."
Before he could question her, Peggy lead them through hidden doors to Dr. Erskine and the lab. (Y/n)'s eye's widened in wonder as she stared at the pod before her. Beefcake Steve was so damn close. But she'll admit, she'll miss twink Steve. Erskine came up to them and said his good mornings. He shook their hands and a photographer took their pictures. He dismissed them and asked if they were ready. Steve nods, and (Y/n) becomes nervous when Erskine asks who will go first.
"Steve will. "
Steve looked at her surprised, "I thought you wanted too?"
"No no no no" she denied, "Steve you should go."
"Alright." He listened to Erskine's instructions and took his clothes off. (y/n) bit her bottom lip, and made him face her. He blushed, the color going down his chest.
"What are you doing?"
"Remembering." She said softly with a smile, "Little Stevie won't be little anymore, I'm kinda sad to see him go. But it's for the better."
Steve stared at her before hugging her, "You promise you'll be here when I come out?"
"Of course, for every coming out there is." She joked, hoping the joke went over his head.
It did, and Steve was ushered into the pod. He laid down, and (Y/n) went up to the observation room. She was introduced as the other subject for the serum, surprising many of the men. She greeted the Senator, who she remembered his name, Brandt. Sitting down next to Peggy, she listened to Erskine.
"Ladies and gentlemen, today we take not another step towards annihilation, but the first step on the path to peace. We begin with a series of micro injections into the subjects major muscle groups. The serum infusion will cause immediate cellular change. And then to stimulate growth, the subject will be saturated with Vita-Rays."
They put penicillin in Steve, making (Y/n) smile as she heard Steve comment how it wasn't so bad, not realizing it was a steroid.
Erskine talks to his team, calls for Stark to raise the pod. It lifts upright, and it soon begins. It becomes bright, and everyone can soon hear Steve screaming as the percentage goes up. Erskine and Peggy call for it to turn off.
"No!" Cry Steve and (y/n) at the same time.
"He can do this. I know he can!"
"I can do this!"
The gauge keeps going up until it reaches 100%. The machine overloads and opens itself up. (Y/n) was the first one out, a big smile on her face. Erskine calls for Steve, and soon the bastard walks from the steam. He's tall, taller than (Y/n), thicker, abs. He's finally Chris Evans and not CGI. The female begins crying, and she hugs him, making Steve stumble for a bit. But he hugs her back, smiling.
"I did it."
The doctor agrees, "Yeah, yeah. I think we did it."
Stark agrees, and Peggy smiles up at Steve, "How do you feel?"
"Taller."
(Y/n) pulls away, wiping her eyes, "You sure are taller. Taller than me for a change. You might be the same height as Buck."
She overhears the Colonel talking to the Senator about Steve, who then shakes hand with the doctor. Erskine was about to instruct (Y/n) to strip to a tank top-
But then there was an explosion.

Chapter Text
The explosion went off, (Y/n) using her body to protect a nurse. In the chaos, she heard Erskine call for them to capture the enemy. She felt her heart stop- Erskine is about to die. She looked, up, seeing the male hold up his gun and aim for the doctor.
She couldn't let that happen.
Her body moved faster than her mind as she pushed Erskine away, saving him from his death.
She felt herself become lighter, as the male started running and Steve went after him. She realized that this was it- her first real big change. She saved the doctor.
She got up, and began to chase after Steve, who already got a good head start. But she needed to be there, she had too. "Steve!"
Exiting the lab and building, she began to follow the path Steve took chasing the HYDRA agent. Taking turns and - damn, Steve's fucking fast holy shit- she starts to catch up, seeing Steve dive for the submarine- damn did she get fast? She hadn't even taken the serum- and so she pauses, waiting for him to come up. The blonde comes up with Krueger- thats his damn dammit- and they fight some more, (Y/n) walks up behind the Nazi and wacks him with pipe she picked up from the ground. He falls to the floor, surprising Steve.
"Oh...th..thanks." He stuttered, before looking down at Krueger. (Y/n) stood behind them- then widened her eyes. She shoved her hand into his mouth and took the cyanide tooth out.
"Ha bitch, try dying now."
This surprised both men, especially Krueger, "How...did you know-"
"I have my ways you bastard now spill the info." She seethed.
Steve shook his head, "Who the hell are ya?"
"......We are many. Cut off one head, two will appear."
"HYDRA." stated (Y/n), sighing, "Yeah yeah the fucking nazis and more. Can we hand him over to the government now?"
Krueger seemed more disturbed by the female, he then whispered a confused "Hail Hydra?"
She frowned, "No I do not fucking 'hail hydra'. Go die in a hole. Preferably your grave."
Steve sighed, and picked up the male. Peggy and the other officers reached them by car. Peggy came out, worried for the two, Seeing Krueger alive and missing a tooth, she furrowed her brows. Steve pointed at (Y/n), who merely shrugged, "It was cyanide."
The officers threw the German into the car and took him away. Steve looked to (Y/n), only to blush and looked away. She was oogling at him, and how could she not? He was hot.
"Whaaaaat? You were cute before but now...you're smokin." She stated with a grin, making the blonde cover his face. Peggy watched in interest, but she couldn't decide which one to keep her eyes on.
"Come along you two, we still need to do (Y/n)"
The other female perked up, looking at Peggy, "Wait but.....we lost the vials- Kruger-"
"Erskine is still alive thanks to you, he can take a blood sample from Steve and make more."
"Oh....okay." Her voice got squeaky, humming. "How long will that take?"
"Depends on the doctor, but for now we're taking you to a hotel." She stated, getting in the other car for their travels. Steve followed in behind her, hitting his head on the roof. That made (Y/n) snicker, and Steve glared at her playfully. Once all in, Steve squishing the females now, (Y/n) decided to look out the window, daydreaming.
"It's a long long way to ba sing se, but the girls in the city they are oh so pretty..." she sang softly. Steve looked at her, smiling.
"I've never heard that song before."
"Oh its um..." she spluttered, "It's from a story...a...long..long story."
"Well I think we have time."
"hhnngggg." SHe sighed, "Alright...but I warn you."
"Water, Earth, Fire, Air, long ago, the four nations lived in harmony, but everything changed when the fire nation attacked-"
"And so, Aang defeated the Firelord, got together with Katara, had some kids, and the next one is the Legend of Korra-"
"I think that's long enough" Steve laughed, sitting on his bed. They were in their hotel room now, relaxing before the more tests and experiments. "That was an amazing story, who told you that?"
"Oh...uh...my friend Nick El Loden. He's from my...hometown..."
"Nick El Loden...is he hispanic?"
"uhhh...I...I don't think so..." She said, scratching her chin.
Steve laughed some, studying her some before yawning.
"Well I'm getting some sleep, you should too. Good night (Y/n)."
"Good night."
Steve got in his bed and turned off the lamp. (Y/n) did the same, but she didn't sleep. Instead she waited for-
"Looking for me?" said a soft female voice. (Y/n) sat up, seeing a blonde woman with with tan skin, bright green eyes.
"Decided being a male was too hard?" She spoke softly, trying not to disturb Steve.
Death smiled, "It was actually easy, but I found this form and though oooo, a blonde without a fake tan? I'm in."
"I don't know, while I don't have a preference, that black male form of yours was very handsome."
"You like him?" She stated, her voice becoming more and more male. She was transforming into the other form, intriguing (Y/n).
"Wow...that was.."
"Amazing?" He said in a low voice, his green eyes still the same.
"Yeah." She said honestly surprising Death some, "That was amazing."
The male smiled, before turning to Steve, 'Let's move this outside so we don't wake him."
She nodded and went to the door to the hallway. Death shut the door behind him, facing the female.
"So what do you want to know? You summoned me." He stated.
(y/n) raised her brows, "Wait I summoned you?"
"Yeah you did." He said softly, "I gave you that power. If you ever need me on an adventure, just...think of me and I'll appear. But think of me too often and I'll think you'll have a crush on me."
That made the female giggle, "You're a dork Death.....um, but what happens now that Erskine is alive, he was supposed to die, and so was the HYDRA agent."
"I don't know. That was the whole point of bringing you here, to change the story."
"I know that but...I mean Steve is supposed to be the only other super soldier besides...well ya know. I can't be a soldier-"
"But you can. You're basically immortal. Just become super strong anyways." he stated.
"I know but..."
"No buts, you did the right thing. And you will continue to do so."
(Y/n) smiled, "How are things back in my world?"
He hummed, "As good as they can get. I think you're better off here at the moment though."
"Im living through world war two, how is this better?"
"Trust me. Fight this fight and you can fight all fights. Never stop fighting for your rights."
"What the fuck is happening?"
"The world is changing, just like it is here. Anyways, you need sleep."
(Y/n) sighed, "Alright, I will....hey um...could you be-"
"Nick El Loden? Yeah, give me a time and we'll call it a date." he said with a smirk.
"Yeah, sure, a date. Surprise me and we'll see."
She turned to the door, giggling. She paused, thinking she heard something, only to find that Death was gone. She shrugged, and entered. Steve was on his side, back facing her. (Y/n) shut the door and crawled into bed, yawning and falling asleep.
Steve opened his eyes, sighing softly.
He heard everything.

Chapter Text
The next morning (Y/n) and Steve found themselves at the SSR compound. Steve's blood was being drawn by a nurse, and he looked at the vials of blood taken from him, "Think you got enough?"
Peggy looked at him, "Any hope of reproducing a program is locked in your genetic code. With Dr. Erskine, it could take months."
This made (Y/n) look up from her magazine that she stole- months. Not Years. She could become a super soldier in like 3 months...how could she survive with Steve until then? Her body was not made for fighting like the Red Skull. Sure she's worked out but hey....she's no beefcake.
The nurse finished and Steve got up, rubbing his arm some. (Y/n) rose as well and walked to Steve, attempting to talk and crack jokes with him, but he only glanced at her with a frown before turning away. The female watched him with concern- this was the second time he did this. He was acting really strange. She bit her bottom lip, looking a bit sad. Did she do something wrong? She tried to think about what she had said yesterday. Maybe it was her actions with Kreuger? No no he was fine. Was it her retelling of the Last Airbender? No he liked that. Then what in the world. He was asleep when Death came....
Wasn't he?
(Y/n) widened her eyes, he was asleep wasn't he? He didn't get up and....eavesdrop into her conversation. Didn't learn that she's not from this world or the fact that she'd dead- or the fact that she knows whats going to happen- Steve couldn't be mad at that! He wouldn't be able to understand! It's the 40's! She still sees segregation among the diners there's no possible way!
She sighed, and rubbed the back of her neck as Steve walked away with a nurse who was fawning over him. Peggy looked at her and walked up to the girl.
"Is everything alright?" She asked softly. (Y/n) looked into Peggy's brown eyes and sighed.
"I...don't know. Steve's been really off and I don't know what I did. He was fine last night...this morning he didn't even say good morning....he always said good morning.... He's said good morning to everyone but me!" She found herself with tears in her eyes and she wiped them away.
"Dammit- I don't know what I did! Or what to do!"
"Talk to him dear." Peggy said kindly, smiling at her, "Talk to him and get and answer out of him. He may be a super soldier now but that doesn't mean he's not the same ol Steve that you know."
(Y/n) nodded, "Alright I will."
"Now let's go to the tech lab where the others are."
"Okay."
They walk over to the tech lab where Stark was busy tinkering with the submarine. Steve was already there, watching him and taking in the conversation. (Y/n) looked at him and shook her head, He didn't even spare a glance at her when she entered. Deciding to find someone else to bother since Steve was being a jerk, she focused on Howard Stark.
"So Howard, how's the sub coming?"
Stark looked up at her from his tinkering, smiling some, "Oh you know, trying to discover the secrets of the universe, and this damn submarine."
He sighed, and (Y/n) looked at the spot he was working on, "Oh, its a Leviathan model."
Stark widened his eyes...and so did Steve.
"How do you know?"
"Uh...Well it's a popular model, and I studied them."
Totally not for the fact that I wanted to be accurate for my fanfic back in the real world nooooooo. She giggled some and looked at the model some more, "But I don't know much about what Hydra did to this one."
"Colonel Phillips, my committee is demanding answers." said Senator Brandt, glaring at the Colonel.
"Great," Started Phillips, "Why don’t we start with how a German spy got a ride to my secret installation in your car?"
He turned to (Y/n) and Stark, who were now just messing around with the submarine. Phillips frowned, "What have we got here?"
Stark perked up and blushed modestly,"Speaking modestly, I’m the best mechanical engineer in this country. But I don’t know what’s inside this thing or how it works. We’re not even close to this technology."
(Y/n) giggled some, "I just told you, it's a Leviathan Model. You guys are just slow."
Steve narrowed his eyes at her, unbeknownst to the female, but not to Peggy, who watched him like a hawk. But she must admit, even she was confused about her knowing the model.
Brandt stared at her, "And how do you know about this submarine?"
"I read about it in books" It's not wrong, "And while HYDRA has made changes, I should be able to tell you about it if I remember more details."
Stark smiled at her, a little glint in his eyes, caught by Steve. His glare seemed to deepen more but not at (Y/n). He shook his head and turned back to the conversation.
Brandt sighed, "Whose HYDRA?"
Peggy stepped forward, her little heels clicking against the tiles, "HYDRA is the Nazi deep science division. It’s led by Johann Schmidt. But he has much bigger ambitions."
"Kinda like how this is deep science for us. Changing the human body into other worldly way." commented (Y/n).
Phillips continued without missing a beat, "HYDRA’s practically a cult. They worship Schmidt, they think he’s invincible."
"So What are you gonna do about it?" asked the Senator.
"Spoke to the president this morning. As of today the SSR is being retasked."
"Colonel?" Peggy asked confused, she wasn't aware of this.
" We are taking the fight to HYDRA. Pack your bags Agent Carter. You too, Stark. You’re flying to London tonight."
Steve widened his eyes and looked to the Colonel, he stepped forward, "Sir, if you’re going after Schmidt, I want in."
(Y/n) also stepped forward, a determined look on her face, "Me too."
"You're experiments, you're going to Alamogordo." Colonel stated.
"The serum worked, and Erskine will be able to make more and (Y/n) can....take it." Steve stated.
"I asked for an army and all I got was you. You are not enough. Nor is the female who doesn't have the serum!"
"Hey! I kept that damn Nazi alive and saved Erskine's life, don't say that I'm fucking useless! I did that shit without the serum! And I'll do it in the fucking war like many of the other hundreds of men! Don't fucking underestimate me cause I'm a girl. You didn't in the camp, so don't do it now."
Everyone stared at (y/n) as she stared the Colonel down, even Brandt was mildly impressed.
"With all due respect Colonel," started Brandt, "I think we may be missing the point. I’ve seen you in action, Steve. More importantly, the country’s seen it."
He called for a paper from one of his workers, and he held it up for everyone to see, Steve and (Y/n) we're front page, taking care of the Nazi, "The enlistment lines have been around the block since your picture hit the newsstands. You don’t take soldiers, symbols like that, and hide them in a lab. Son, Ma'am, do you want to serve your country on the most important battlefield of the war?"
Steve spoke first, "Sir that's all I want."
The female groaned, "oh no."
"Then congratulations, you just got promoted."

Chapter Text
"You are not putting me in the dress." (Y/n) stated to the show girls, "I don't like it."
"But ma'am, you have to, it's apart of the show." whined the girls, looking at her with pitying looks.
"I will not! If it was longer then yeah but no! It's just sexualizing and its only for those men.." (Y/n) complained. The girls looked at each other and smiled.
"It's not just for the men ya know..." They said softly. The female stared at them and realized. She snatched the dress with a flush and went to go put it on, the girls giggling behind her.
Steve stepped out in his suit, sighing as he talked to Brandt's aid. He had to wait a moment before he went on stage. The girls were going out to get in position, but one hung back. He looked up at the female, and he began to stare. She was beautiful, with her (h/l) hair fixed nicely and her makeup done. SHe turned towards him and he felt his breath leave.
"(Y/n)?" he asked, walking towards her. The female frowned softly, turning to the side.
"Oh now you talk to me, when I'm dolled up?"
Steve realized and looked away, "Sorry...I-"
"No Steve....don't. Talk to me when I'm not about to be objectified by so many people. Talk to me when I'm not your perfect girl. Talk to me as a friend. The only reason I'm in this dress is for the girls..." She smiled softly at the mention of them. Steve nodded and turned towards the stage. He had to save (y/n) in the show from the Hitler actor, really sell those bonds.
"...can we talk after the show?" He asked. The female shook her head, "I got plans. With the girls."
He nodded, and they went on stage.
It was like that for the next few months. (Y/n) avoiding Steve, hanging with the USO girls. The only time she really was with Steve was rehearsal and during the show. When they took pictures for propaganda and for fans. It was annoying Steve quite a bit cause he couldn't catch her. Everyday he grew more agitated, the female evading him in every way. Not to mention that when he went to her tent to talk, he kept hearing her talking to the stranger from the night. Death. He wanted to barge in but he found himself unable too.
It was a couple weeks before they were going to head to to army base, and Steve decide to talk to (y/n) whether she liked it or not. He saw her walking with the USO girls and walked to them, grabbing her by the arm. The others turned and looked at the two. Steve frowned, and so did the girl in question.
"We need to talk. Now."
"Steve-"
"Now. I'm not playing. It's been weeks and you've been avoiding me."
"(Y/n)?" said one of the girls. The duo looked at the girls' concerned looks. The female smiled awkwardly, "I'll be okay Hailey. Go on with the others. It seems I need to have a chat with him anyways."
The girls nodded and gave Steve strange looks, heading to their tent.
(Y/n) whipped her head to Steve, brows furrowed in annoyance, "Fine, You have me, now let go of my damn arm you bastard."
Steve let go as she yanked it away from him.
"Look you need to explain a lot of things. You're keeping secrets from me and I don't appreciate that."
"Steven, I can't just tell you these things. Some things are meant to be kept quiet." She sighed,
"A strange man, the same man in your tent is meant to be private?"
The girl rolled her eyes, "As if you don't have one of the USO girls in your tent!"
"Hey at least I'm not being secretive and not telling you. I've been trying talk to for weeks, you told me to wait when you weren't dolled up but you're making sure that's the ONLY time I see you!"
"Well maybe I don't want to talk to you dammit!"
"WHY? WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?"
"You wouldn't understand!"
"What wouldn't I understand? (y/n) I understand you like girls and guys, I understand that you will fight the fucking police on the street, for the little guy no matter what! I understand that you want to get out of the dress and want to go fight the real fight like me! I know that you're hoping they keep their damn promise on turning you into a soldier like me!" Steve rubbed his face, letting his hands run through his hair, "I understand that you're actually terrified, but you're still here with me trying to make this work! What wouldn't I understand-"
"Steve I-"
A voice interrupted them. They turned to the man in question. It was Dr. Eskrine.
"I hate to interrupt your lovers quarrel but.. We need (Y/n). The serum is ready. We'll get her back to you by the army base." he stated. (Y/n) sighed, and walked to the doctor, leaving Steve with sad eyes. Steve didn't even look at her.
"We'll talk when you get back okay?" He said softly. (Y/n) nodded and walked with Erskine to the car, and Steve walked to his tent.
"You redecorated the place.." (y/n) said softly. AN arm went around her shoulders, and she smiled seeing Stark.
"AH, you know, needed to keep impressing the ladies."
"As if. They wouldn't actually come 5 feet around you. You smell like oil all the time."
"(Y/n) you wound me, many women want moi!"
"The only want that wants you is Uncle Sam." She retorted with a laugh, taking her over shirt off and leaving herself in a tank top. She stepped into the machine that Steve once was in. Erskine began to hook her up. He smiled softly, "You never did correct me."
"Hm?"
"When I said you and Steve were having a lovers quarrel. You never corrected me and said you weren't."
(Y/n) blushed, "Well...even if we were...we'd probably be broken up by now."
"I doubt that, everyone can tell that boy is head over heels for you." He chuckled, making the girl stare at him. That was the second person to tell her that. She shook her head, and the doctor shrugged, leaving her and going to his station.
"Everyone ready? The first female super soldier is in progress!" cried Stark.

Chapter Text
"Ya know...I didn't expect my boobs to get (bigger/smaller)."
(Y/n) looked at herself in the mirror after the transformation. Behind her Death chuckled, leaning back in his chair, "You are now the first female super soldier, complete with god-like abs, have incredible stamina and endurance, and you're worried about your breast size?"
She turned back to him with a pout, "Well, you would too if it changed suddenly- oh wait, you can do that as you please."
"Ooo, someone is a bit salty today, what's the issue darling?" He asked.
She sighed, moving away from the mirror and sitting down in a chair beside his, "...I think Steve heard us the last time you came. He's been questioning me, knows about the strange man who visits. I'm losing his trust, which isn't good. I wanted to be friends with him until the very end...because once he's back from the ice....and Bucky...no doubt he'll hate me.."
Death hummed, thinking, "Interesting. I didn't think he'd notice. He seemed blind to other things."
She gave him a side eye, "Seriously? He's not oblivious you know? He's very observant. He sees the small details in things. He's an artist, he went to art school. He remembered a flower I really like that I stated offhand and he got it for me."
The male gave her a grin, "Your saying he knows every little thing about you?"
"Yes what does...oh...I see."
"Steve is your best friend. He's just concerned. I truly doubt anything will get in between that. He'll understand. Maybe not now, but he will."
(Y/n) smiled at Death, "Thank you, you always know what to say. I really appreciate that."
Death seemed a little surprised by this, but gave a cocky smile quickly, "Of course! What would I do without my entertainment?"
He got smacked on the arm by (Y/n), both laughing. She looked at Death once she calmed down some, "Hey, since your death, how does that work will Hela?"
"Oh, I am Hela."
"......What?"
"Yes! I'm here. I am one being. I take the form of Death in every universe there is, fictional to others, real to some."
"...Oh.....okay then."
(Y/n) met up with everyone again at the airport to Italy. They were going to try and cheer up the soldiers on the war front but uh...she knew they only want the girls. She sighed, stepping onto the plain. She decided that she was ready to talk to Steve and settle some things with him. To be honest, the female was out of her comfort zone. She was more fit than ever but terribly insecure, simply because she was wearing a dress.
Seriously, a dress without the USO girls whining about it.
It was a deep red dress with white polka dots, matching shoes, and a hat! She blush underneath it as some of the men boarding with her whistled. (Y/n) still flipped them off though.
"Shut up! It isn't for you!"
"(Y/n)?"
She looked down from the plane steps and saw Steve, carrying his luggage. He was staring at her with wide eyes, and a small blush slowly crept up his face. (Y/n) rubbed her cheek, "Hi Stevie....we...um we should board-"
She rushed inside, wondering why in the hell was she so flustered. It was Steve! She's seen this man shirtless countless of times! She has nursed him back to health. (Y/n) sat down by a window and took her hat off, sitting it in her lap....Maybe it was because they left on bad terms before she got jacked up? Maybe because everyone tells her Steve is in love with her? Maybe because she's falling for him and she subconsciously got dolled up for him-
"No." Whispering to herself, "It's not that. I can't do that. I won't do that. Hurts too much."
She sighed and looked out the window. Steve got on board and sat down a row behind her on the other side. He looked at her through the bodies of other people boarding the plane. No one sat next to her. Of course there would be stigmatism, she was a female super soldier after all. Men are intimated by her.
Except....Steve.
The plane took off, and once cruising level Steve got up and sat right next to (Y/n). This startled her, adn she looked up at the male.
"Steve...Hi..."
"Hey..."
Becoming silent, they each twiddled their thumbs.
"Hey look-"
"I've been meaning to tell you-"
"-I'm sorry."
They looked at each other, both surprised that they said the same thing.
"...jinx!" (Y/n) said with a smile.
"What- hey!"
"Nah! Your jinx so your stuck being silent unless someone says your name three times! Rules are rules!"
He groaned, but the female's smile became softer. "Now that you've hushed....I can tell you some things.."
Steve looked at her silently, as the female began speaking.
"I want you to know that the man isn't someone you need to worry about. He's...special, like us. He's doing his own thing. He won't hurt me or you...or anybody. He's a good person and one day you'll meet him. Just not now."
Steve nodded slowly, turning to look at his hands in his lap. After a few moments (Y/n) smiled and said his name thrice. He smiled, "You're a dork, you know that?"
"I know." (Y/n) leaned back in her seat some, looking at her friend.
The male took a deep breath, leaning back as well, "I'm...sorry for not trusting you. I was worried that you might of be getting into something...dangerous."
"Dangerous? More dangerous than a war?"
He snorted and lightly hit her, which returned earned him a hit. The two began play fighting, and (Y/n) got the upper hand and began to give him a knuckle sandwich.
"Ok! OK! Uncle Uncle!" Steve laughed. (Y/n) relented and smiled, giggling some. She stared at the male and hugged him once calmed down. It surprised him, as she wasn't one for hugs.
"I missed you Steven."
"....I missed you too (Y/n)...till the end of the line, okay?"
She froze, before nodding, now beginning to rest on him, "Till the end of the line."

Chapter Text
They finally reached Italy. Instead of sightseeing though, they were to entertain soldiers who have been through literal hell. (Y/n) was nervous, being only 5 miles from the fighting. Sure she was a super soldier like Steve, but she was never this brave. Thinking about going to war in her world was never a passing thought. In her nervousness she grabbed Steve's hand, "We're so close....aren't you nervous?"
Steve looked at her and shook his head, "You seem to forget, I always been ready for a fight."
"But what if you fight something you know you won't get back up from?"
He became confused, and stared at the female, "Are...you okay (Y/n)?"
She shook her head, "No, no I don't think I will be. We may be doing a show but who knows what will happen Steve. We trained for this- but we're facing tanks and bombs, no man's land. Maybe in stories the good guys win- but this is reality."
That seemed to hit her as she said it. This was reality. This was her reality. She was about to go into one of the bloodiest wars known to man. And there would be no censorship like in the movies.
Steve squeezed her hand, "Look, you don't have to worry, when we get out there, we will be able to help those who need it. We went through this so we could save those who can't save themselves."
"We're two years too late."
He grimaced, before pulling her into a hug, "Look, I promise we'll be okay. Now come on, we gotta get dressed for our new show. Featuring Captain America and Lieutenant Star."
(Y/n) whipped her head up, surprised, "I'm...Lieutenant? Star? Like Stars and stripes? The star spangled banner?"
He smiled some, "Yes you are."
She paused, running things in her head, before gasping, "YOU'RE A RANK HIGHER THAN ME-"
He laughed loudly, a hand on his chest and leaning back- he did the famous Chris Evans laugh.
"Took you that long to figure it out?!" He stated, still laughing. He got whacked by (Y/n), who was pouting to her dressing room.
"I'll become a Lieutenant Colonel- Just you wait!"
The show was starting. The USO girls began to sing their song, but this time (Y/n) weren't a apart of it. She instead would be Steve reading the script. She even got her own mini-shield. It was like Steve's, but her star was more in the middle, aiming with her stage name. She took a deep breath, and she and Steve entered onto the stage. The USO girls left, and it was just them and a bunch of tired soldiers.
"How many of you are ready to sock old Adolf in the jaw?" spoke Steve, looking at the men.
(Y/n) leaned into Steve, "Tough crowd."
She smiled and went forward, "We need a volunteer!"
"I already volunteered, how do you think I got here?" heckled a soldier, making the others laugh. (Y/n) frowned as they called for the USO girls to come back.
"They only know one song, you really wanna hear it on repeat?" she asked, crossing her arms.
"Better than staring at you two, unless you get dolled up sweetheart." He cried back, making the others wolf whistle.
Oh no.
"Exscuse me? You wanna say that a bit louder fuck-face?"
Steve groaned, "Oh no."
The men "oooooohed", "Whatcha gonna do babydoll? "
(Y/n) bit her lip, nodding. They wanted to play that game, alright. She'd take a page out form Peggy Carter herself.
"You think you're tough shit? Come on up here."
Steve shook his head, "(Y/n) please-"
"Steven Grant Rogers I will fucking make sure you don't have babies if you stop me."
He backed off, hands up in surrender. The male came up, smirking. God he was just like Hodge from camp. It pissed her off even more.
"What we gonna do- wrassle?"
"Yeah."
She quickly took his arm and flipped him over herself with ease. Once slamming onto the ground she stepped on his back, twisting his arm around. Her shield, which was stuck on her right arm, came off and slammed into the wooden stage, right by his face.
"Fucking heckle me again, fucking say some sexist shit- fucking make any comments about me- or the USO girls- and I'll cut your dick off- GOT IT?!?!." She yelled to him and the others, who sat in silence. "We are here to fight a goddamn war- but you do not lose your manners your mommy taught you- now apologize to your mommy bitch."
"i-i'm sorry m-momma-"
"Now say Uncle!"
"uncleuncleuncleuncle-"
She let him go, and he ran off the front of the stage and to the other men. She yanked her shield back up and put it on her arm, "Now who wants to fucking hit Adolf Hitler in the jaw with Captain America and Lieutenant Star!?"
The two were resting behind stage as it rained. Steve was across from (Y/n), sketching something. He wouldn't let the female see, but something told her it was her beating up the guy. She smiled, relaxing some. The USO girls fawned over her after the fact, which made her give a shit eating grin to Steve. He didn't really seem to mind though.
"Hello Steve, (Y/n)."
The two turned to the voice, seeing Peggy Carter before them. (Y/n) gasped and got up, hugging the female, "Peggy! Oh how I missed you!"
The female smiled some, chittering, "Now now, did you miss me, or how I did your hair?"
"You you daft girl! I needed more estrogen in my life, Steve has too much testosterone."
"Hey! Shut up- Anyways, what are you doing here?"
Peggy hummed, peeling (Y/n) off of her, "Officially, I'm not here at all. That...was quite a performance.."
(Y/n) blushed, giggling, "Awwww, you think so? I took a page right form your book Peggy."
"Yes yes, I could tell- Good girl."
Holy shit she called me good girl.
"I understand your America's 'New Hope'?" she stated, taking a seat.
Steve nodded, sitting down as well, "Yeah, bond sales jump 10% every state we visit."
"Is that Senator Brandt I hear?" she teased some, but Steve sighed, looking down. (Y/n) sat beside him and rubbed his shoulder some.
"At least he has us doing this, Phillips would of kept us in a lab."
"Are these really your only two options? A lab rat or a dancing monkey?" Peggy asked in disbelief, "You were made for more than this you know?"
Steve paused, going to speak but didn't. (Y/n) sighed, doing it for him, "For him, this is really what he wanted. He wanted to do something, help others...not others help him for once. And he's here, he's this close, but we are dancing in tights, being pretty with the USO girls."
There was a siren behind them, and they watch an ambulance arrive onto the base. Wounded soldiers from the front came out, making (Y/n) wince and Steve frown, "They look like they've been through hell."
" These men more than most." Peggy started. "Schmidt sent out a force to Azzano. Two hundred men went up against him and less than fifty returned. Your audience contained what was left of the one-oh-seventh. The rest were killed or captured."
The two super-soldiers froze. The 107. Bucky's group. She completely forgot that was his group out there! She completely forgot they had to go save him- that he was this close. She launched herself from the stage, Steve and Peggy in tow. Finding Colonel Phillips she skipped to a stop.
"Ah the Girl and Man with a plan, what's your plan after that little stunt?" he asked with a snark.
(Y/n) put her hands on the table, worried, "I need the causality list from the 107th!"
"Hey- I don't take orders from you Lieutenant."
"Please! My friend- One of my best friends- James Barnes. He goes by Bucky- I- I have to know if he's okay- If he's alive!" She pleaded. Steve stood behind her, a hand on (Y/n)'s shoulder.
"Please sir, we have to know..."
Phillips grumbled, pointing to Peggy, "We- are going to have a conversation that you won't like."
He looked down at the condolence letters, "I've went through so many of these....but Barnes is familiar...I'm sorry. It was written to you two, now that I think about it."
(Y/n) went frozen, and almost lost her balance. She had to remember that he was still alive, that he wasn't fully transformed. She could save him.
She had a new determined look in her eyes.
"What about the captured soldiers? Any rescue missions?" She demanded, looking up at Phillips.
"Yeah! It's called winning the war." he stated with a scoff.
Steve looked at him with confusion and disbelief, "But if you know where they are....why not?"
"It's because he's a pussy old man." Stated (Y/n) with a hateful glare towards Phillips. "They're 30 miles past the front lines in Austria in a heavily fortified military base."
Phillips, and the others, stared at her. The older man stared at her with an untrustworthy look, "I don't know how you know all of that, but you better keep to yourself next time, got it little girl? Plus you two got someplace to be in 30 minutes and it aint here."
(Y/n) looked at the military map, memorizing where everyone was at. She grabbed Steve's hand and pulled him away.
"Yeah- we got somewhere to be. Not with your dying old ass."

Chapter Text
Peggy caught up with them, but was struggling to keep up with their fast pace, "What do you plan to do, walk to Austria?"
(Y/n) kept walking, a dark look on her face, " If that’s what it takes."
"You heard the Colonel, your friend is most likely dead." Peggy was becoming exasperated, trying to follow close to the two super soldiers.
Steve became stern, whipping his head to her, "You don’t know that."
"Even so," Peggy started, huffing, "He’s devising a strategy. If he detects…"
The trio reached a jeep and (Y/n) whipped her head to Peggy. She looked angry , maybe even a little hurt. "By the time he’s done that, it could be too late!"
She sighed, leaning against the vehicle, "You told me you thought we were meant for more than this. Did you mean that?"
The other female paused, "Every word."
Peggy watched them, somewhat amazed by their determination. She put her hand on the steering wheel, stopping Steve from driving off, "I can do better than that."
Peggy helped them steal some helmets from the USO girls, among other things like guns and their shields. Steve had the iconic "A" on his helmet, and (Y/n) grabbed one from the "S" section. They were on a plain being flown by Howard Stark himself. (Y/n) sat with him, chatting before their decent into enemy territory.
Steve watched them, a small jealous look in his eyes. Howard was so smooth with (Y/n), he didn't fumble with his words, and worse yet, (Y/n) flirted right back with him. She enjoyed his company, made jokes.
He wished he could do that.
(Y/n) came back into the main area where Peggy and Steve were. She smiled at the two before pointing to their helmets, "Hey Steve, guess what?"
Steve looked at her, and smiled slightly, "What (Y/n)?"
"If we got another helmet with an S, we would of spelt out ASS." She giggled, making Steve and Howard laugh. Even Peggy threw in a small smirk.
"Which would be fitting for Steve, I mean have you SEEN his ass?" (Y/n) said, smiling.
Peggy chuckled, "Oh yes, I heard that it's a common topic with the USO girls."
"It is??" Steve asked, a small blush forming on his cheeks.
"You have nooooo idea." the other girl said, leaning back some. "That's America's ass right there my boy."
Sorry Scott, (Y/n) thought, wincing inside, it had to be said now. Because the look on Steve's face is worth it. He flushed to high hell, before coughing into his hand and turning to the window.
Peggy smiled at the two before becoming serious, "The HYDRA camp is in Krausberg, tucked between these two mountain ranges. It’s a factory of some kind."
Howard looked behind him and spoke next, a shit eating grin on his face, "We should be able to drop you right on the doorstep."
"Just get us as close as you can Howard." (Y/n) said, a lift in her tone. Steve looked to Peggy and Howard, a little bit worried, "You know, you two are gonna be in a lot of trouble at the lab."
"And you won't?" Peggy asked with a scoff.
"Where we're goin’, if anybody yells at us we can just shoot ‘em." He stated, smiling at (Y/n).
Peggy rolled her eyes, "They will undoubtedly shoot back."
"That's why we got these babies." (Y/n) stated hitting her shield with grin.
Howard turned around again and spoke to Peggy, "Agent Carter, if we’re not in too much of a hurry I thought we could stop off in Lucerne for a late night fondue."
Peggy sighed awkwardly and tried to fix the situation before Steve and (Y/n) hopped off the plane, "Stark is the best civilian pilot I’ve ever seen. He’s mad enough to brave this airspace, we’re lucky to have him."
"So are you two…? Do you…? Fondue?" Steve asked. (Y/n) whacked his head, "Steven! You don't just ask people if they fuck!"
"(Y/n) you don't just say fuck!" Steven said back to her.
"Children! This is your transponder. Activate it when you’re ready and the signal will lead us straight to you." Peggy stated, a small flush to her cheeks.
"Are you sure this thing works?" Steve asked.
(Y/n) mocked him, "'Are you sure this thing works'- Steve why WOULDN'T it work?"
The plane shook, and (Y/n) held the side of her seat. She gritted her teeth as the plane began to be shot down. Both her and Steven got up and went to the doors. Peggy grabbed their shoulders, "Get back here! We’re taking you all the way in."
The other female shook her head, "As soon as we're free, you turn this thing around and get the hell outta here!"
Peggy looked offended, " You can’t give me orders!"
"The hell we can't! He's a Captain and I'm a Lieutenant!" (Y/n) said as they jumped out of the plane. Howard, finding his cue, turned the plane around and out of enemy fire.
Falling to the ground couldn't be more terrifying than dying again, (Y/n) thought, screaming her head off.
Steve was below her to her right, seemingly calm as ever. The female tried to do some breathing exercises but to be honest, she wasn't having it. The second Steve pulled his parachute she did the same. She cried softly, looking at Steve as they floated down, "I'll face Nazis, aliens, demons, whatever- I will NEVER do heights again."
Steve gave her a look, "We are going into battle and heights is what's gets you? I'll never understand you woman."
"Good!"
Once reaching the ground, (Y/n) wiped her face and took off her parachute, "Damn this thing. Steve you good.?"
Steve looked back to her and nodded, "Yeah I'm good. Got your shield?"
"Of course! My perfect companion. And you of course."
"Delighted. Come on, we only have a little more too go before we find Bucky."

Chapter Text
The woods were pitch black, even with the clear moon, their one source of light seemingly sucked away from them by the surrounding trees. This proved to be no issue for Steve and (Y/N), the serum not only enhancing their bodies but their senses as well. Seeing in the dark was a piece of cake for them.
“We’re like ninjas!” (Y/N) exclaimed, whisper-yelling to Steve in the darkness. They were beginning to stumble upon the HYDRA base, artificial bulbs illuminating the space in front of them.
“We’re soldiers,” Steve scolded quietly, holding a finger to his lips to try and silence the other. “We’re close. This place is covered up with guards. We have to be careful getting in.”
He scanned the area for an entrance - something that wouldn’t call attention, but something easy enough to get to. In the distance, he heard one of the off-roaders heading up the trail into the compound. Perfect. “Come on,” Steve grabbed (Y/N)’s wrist, pulling her off to the side towards the trail. As the truck approached, he snuck up behind it, quickly hopping inside the back alongside (Y/N).
“Going somewhere?”
The HYDRA soldiers inside began to scream, but Steve made quick work of them, knocking them both out before they could alert the driver.
“‘Going somewhere?’ Really?” He shook his head, a slight smile crossing his face.
“What? It’s a valid question!” (Y/N) argued back with a triumphant grin, laughing to herself when Steve just rolled his eyes.
“Behind me,” he commanded easily, crouching down and holding his shield up to hide behind. The truck rumbled along the path, occasionally hitting a small pothole which caused the duo to shift. (Y/N) reached out, wrapping her arms around Steve’s waist to keep herself from toppling over and possibly making a loud noise against the truck’s bed.
As the off-roader began to come to a stop, (Y/N) felt her heart pounding in her chest. She knew they were stopping because they were inside of the compound now. A HYDRA compound. The thought alone made her anxious, but she swallowed her nerves and put on a brave face.
There was a click of the trunk’s door latch being opened, and Steve braced himself, waiting until the door was just open enough before lunging forward, bashing whoever was on the other side. Luckily, it had just been one man, and he was knocked unconscious within moments. (Y/N) stared up at him in astonishment, which was quickly replaced by a bit of jealousy.
“I want to do it next time. That was so cool.” She pouted as Steve scoffed, and unfurled herself from around his waist. He cautiously stepped out of the truck, (Y/N) following close behind. He directed her between the various vehicles, steering clear of a few lingering guards and landing between a couple of tanks, which shielded them from two angles. It would be difficult for them to get spotted here. On the sides of each tank, there were huge HYDRA symbols. Proud emblems that would surely take forever to remove, if one were to try. Luckily, (Y/N) didn’t need to remove it. She only needed to cover it.
Within her pocket, she had kept a wide, king-size Sharpie. Very helpful in situations, especially situations like this. With a wide grin, she uncapped the marker and leaned up to the side of the tank, scribbling big, angry letters over the HYDRA emblem.
‘FUCK YOU’, it read, in gloriously large, block letters.
“Really?” Steve questioned. “That’s it? You couldn’t have come up with something better than ‘fuck you?’”
“Hey, it means something to me, alright? Besides, it’s a pretty straightforward message. Fuck you!” (Y/N) spoke with a bit of a fire, shooting a bird to the side of the tank just to put salt in the metaphorical wound.
Steve muttered something under his breath, ignoring the other’s antics and peering out from between the tanks. He scanned for any standing guards - saw none. They were in the clear. He remained crouched just in case, and scurried off behind another tank, this one placed strategically next to a building. Steve hauled himself onto the roof of the vehicle, and (Y/N) followed closely behind.
“Okay … So we need to get in there, right?” (Y/N) asked, looking through a small window just a little way up from the tank. It appeared to be a factory on the inside, at least from what she gathered. Unfortunately, the window she was looking through was too small. Steve realized this the moment he glanced over at it.
“... There has to be another window somewhere. Come on. We need to look for it, before we get caught.” Steve glanced around again before ultimately deciding to take a path along the buildings’ roofs. Despite them both being affected by serum, Steve still had better stamina. He managed to cross the buildings without issue, though (Y/N) was struggling to catch her breath.
“We need a plan, Steve!”
================================================================
(Y/N) dusted herself off, huffing and waving dirt out of her face from where it had flown up into the air.
“Stupid plot armor,” she muttered, exhaling both in a sigh and to dispel the rest of the dust. “... Helpful plot armor, though.”
Steve, who had been directing them through the hallways, almost expertly, glanced over his shoulder to stare at her.
“What are you talking about?”
“Nothing! Hey, I think that’s the door right ahead of us. I’ll get it.” (Y/N) chuckled nervously, moving on from the conversation and rushing a few steps in front of Steve until she was standing in front of the door. She gave it a few confident knocks, and soon someone opened it, peering out through a crack in the door.
“The hell do you want-”
(Y/N) stepped forward, swinging her fist forward and catching the man right in the nose, hitting him hard enough to make him fall backwards. The impact of his head slamming against the ground knocked him out cold, and (Y/N) cheered quietly.
“Aha! Take that, you son of a bitch. Sleep tight.”
Steve raised a questioning eyebrow at her before stepping into the room, grabbing hold of the unconscious man and dragging him away. (Y/N) was astonished upon entering the room. She had forgotten how advanced all of their technology was, especially now, with the help of the Infinity Stone. Further in the room, she spotted huge bombs. (Y/N) bit her lip nervously, almost wincing at the sight of them. They had served as an unhealthy reminder of how serious this war was. She didn’t have too much time to worry about them, though, because Steve had taken her by the wrist again, guiding her directly to the bombs and leading her between them.
On the other side of the bombs, they’d find brilliant blue cartridges. They shone a gorgeous, cerulean blue. (Y/N) grabbed as many as she could, shoving them into pockets and anywhere else they would fit. Thank god the light emitting from them didn’t shine through cotton. Steve gave the room another look-over before deciding there was nothing else of note. He jerked his head towards the door, ushering (Y/N) out and into the hallway again. From there, the duo of soldiers would quietly march the halls, up until they reached the prison. Shockingly, only one guard remained there. (Y/N) snuck up behind the guard, knocking him out with a swift blow before searching the body for a set of keys.
Once they were found, the pair got to work unlocking each of the cell doors. They took turns, exchanging the loop until there were no more prisoners to assist. One of them, a sickly-looking man, looked up to (Y/N) as she unlocked his cell.
“Who… Who are you supposed to be?”
“That’s Captain America,” she said casually, jutting a thumb in Steve’s direction. “And I’m Lieutenant Star.” She flashed the man a bright smile before flinging his cell’s door open, effectively freeing him.
“What, are we gonna take everyone?” A man glanced over, realizing that (Y/N) was adamant about opening as many doors as she saw.
“Uh, yeah, why wouldn’t we?” She worked on unlocking the cell of an Asian man next and flashed him a smile before snapping back at the man with a snarky remark. “Are you being racist? This guy’s from Fresno. You shouldn’t base a book on its cover.” The man just looked confused, wondering how in the hell the lady knew that to begin with.
Steve just sighed, making another sweep around the room before walking with the lot towards the prison’s exit. “We’re looking for a James Buchanan Barnes. Has anyone seen him lately?”
“There’s an isolation ward down in the factory,” one of the prisoners spoke up. “No one’s ever come back from that place, though.”
“Great. Cool,” (Y/N) placed her hands on her hips, turning her head towards the North wall of the prison. “Treeline’s about 80 yards that way, give or take. Get past the gate and run there, you’ll be fine. Give ‘em hell, boys.”
The prisoners stood, dumbfounded. “Do you guys even know what you’re doing?”
“Hell yeah, we do!” (Y/N) quipped confidently. “We punched Hitler like 200 times! At least!” She laughed before exiting the prison with Steve and the other soldiers in tow. They had a friend to hunt down.
================================================================
Finding the ward was nearly impossible, considering the labels were all in German, and (Y/N) hadn’t taken that elective. Turns out, you didn’t need German to navigate a HYDRA base. All you needed was a bit of luck. As they rounded a corner, they spotted a man wearing a beret. He appeared to have blueprints tucked under his arm. (Y/N) pointed at him, scowling. “Zola. That man has blueprints!”
She began chasing the man, with Steve close behind, but a voice stopped them in their tracks. A familiar voice, coming from the room that the man with the beret had just left. Steve hadn’t hesitated - he entered within seconds, but (Y/N) was torn between going along with him or getting Zola. Eventually, she reasoned that Zola could be caught later. She had to get Bucky first.
“Bucky,” she exclaimed, shocked at the state of him. He looked so weak already, thinned down just a bit and with dark circles around the eyes. She rushed to his left side, while Steve took his right, beginning to unfasten the straps keeping him in place.
Weakly, Bucky managed a few more words. “... Steve? (Y/N)? You guys came for me.”
(Y/N) smiled, using it to hide the tears that were slowly gathering in her eyes. “Yeah, Buck. It’s us. We weren’t gonna leave you behind.”
She furiously swiped her hand over her eyes to dry them before helping Bucky off of the table he’d been confined to, keeping him stable with the help of Steve. He tried to uphold his own weight, but it was obvious he was struggling. Bucky was so clearly weakened that it almost made (Y/N) tear up all over again. She glanced to Steve, who bore the same worried expression as her.
“We thought you were dead,” the female all but whispered, her eyes casting down to Bucky. He smiled a bit, attempting to laugh but only having the energy to scoff. “I thought you were a lot smaller.”
(Y/N) playfully dismissed him before becoming startled by an explosion outside. She fought the urge to become frantic, instead darting her eyes around the room for some kind of escape. She found something better - a layout of all of the bases. “Steve,” she said breathlessly, pointing to the paper on the wall. “Look.”
He nodded, studying the paper and only looking away when he was sure he had the routes memorized.
“Come on. We gotta go, now.” Steve readjusted his friend, slipping an arm around his waist and helping (Y/N) carry him out of the room. The entire way, Bucky asked about their new appearances.
“What happened to you guys?”
“We joined the army. What else?”
The explosions outside were getting closer, shaking the building and causing small bits of rubble to fall from the ceiling. Bucky paused for a moment, bracing himself against Steve and (Y/N) and willing himself to move on his own.
“Did it hurt?” He asked next, exhaling sharply before breaking into a jog behind Steve.
“Just a pinch,” (Y/N) replied, matching their speed. “It was a needle. Though, the needle didn’t hurt as bad.”
“Is it permanent?” Bucky looked back at her then, seemingly more worried about the answer to that one.
“Well … Yeah? Look, Buck, we don’t have time! You can ask questions later!” She sighed, increasing her speed until she passed Bucky and Steve both, scouting ahead for any guards or troops.
Meanwhile, Bucky shot his friend a glance. “Since when did she get so bossy?”
“Since she discovered she was a rank below me.” Steve smiled, following (Y/N) down the corridor and back into a familiar room.
The building shook again with another closeby explosion, and (Y/N) started to look frantic.
“Fuck! This is just the stupid bomb room again! How do we get out of this?”
“... Up!” Steve exclaimed, pointing towards the ceiling. A hatch with a ladder attached stood opened. “We have to climb up!”
A secondary bomb detonated underneath them, causing the entire room to tremble and begin to break apart. “Now! Go!” Steve urged, pushing (Y/N) and Bucky towards the ladder. (Y/N) went ahead of Bucky, attempting to use her shield to protect him from falling debris and fragments.
The plan was foolproof, the trio reaching another level of the building that was seemingly empty. That was until they heard a familiar voice from behind them.
“Captain America and Lieutenant Star! How exciting … “ Red Skull’s voice reverberated in the empty hall, accented by the continuation of bombs outside. Within his arms, he carried a set of blueprints, which he handed over to Zola before approaching the three. Steve attempted to walk first, but (Y/N) would be quicker, putting herself between the Skull and Steve.
She glared daggers at the villain, scowling at him before barking out a command.
“Red Skull! You’d better back the fuck up, right now!” Her voice dripped with venom, carrying over the trembling of the stone around them. It roared above the angry, vicious fires sprouting from the explosions, and through the cracking hallway. It seemed to catch everyone off guard, but (Y/N) stood her ground firmly, feeling the eyes of her friends on her from behind.
“Oh …” The Skull grinned, a mischievous look that was surely fit for a villain. “You know who I am? I’m flattered, really. It isn’t every day that an actress such as yourself recognizes someone like me.”
“Shut up!” (Y/N) shouted again, widening her stance in defense. “I know the kind of shit you’ve done. You’re not going to get away with it!” She braced herself, extending her shield and holding it as if she intended for it to be a weapon. “Go on. Take off that face of yours. Take it off! Let them see the real you!”
Steve glanced between (Y/N) and Red Skull, and Bucky was looking between all three of them. They seemed to be at a standstill, making Schmidt laugh in amusement. There was a shine in his eyes - like a predator that had discovered unprotected prey. His smile remained as he stared at the lady. It was as if there was no one else in the room. As if it had just been the battle between the heroine and the delinquent.
“If that’s what you want,” he spoke smoothly, his hand finding the division between skin and bone at the base of his jaw. The hand latched on, pulling the fibers away from his true face, ripping upward with a sickening snap. He tossed his mask aside, letting it catch and melt in the fires below. Underneath, there was nothing but red, an unmarked face that appeared nothing like the mask he wore.
Behind him, Zola pulled a lever, using the moment of shock to retract the catwalk, allowing the duo to begin their escape before it could be stopped. “Here I was, going to fight you. Especially you, Lieutenant. You, who knows so much more than you let on. I’ll get my chance, sooner or later. You’ll see.”
Red Skull waved a mocking goodbye to the trio as he and Zola made their exit. (Y/N) didn’t once let up her violent gaze until they were completely out of sight. Afterwards, she turned toward her friends, afraid to see confusion and hurt in their eyes. Steve, especially. She didn’t miss the way his jaw tensed as he clenched his teeth. He knew she was hiding something else.
“... We still have to get out of here,” Steve spoke after an agonizingly long moment, shaking his head to clear his thoughts. Just a few feet away, a standing support beam between walkways remained. He walked towards them, keeping his back firmly to (Y/N).
“Come on. One at a time.” He helped Bucky onto the beam first, giving him support to find his balance before he began walking across the beam. It began to give, but the man didn’t feel it slipping until it was too late. When he was about halfway across, the beam slipped away, giving him no choice but to jump. It was risky - and he almost missed - but Bucky was able to grab the walkway on the other side. He gasped, hoisting himself up and panting as he looked back at the other two. They had no way to cross.
“There’s gotta be something else,” He insisted, immediately looking around for something else. Another beam, a rope, a plank of wood - something!
“Bucky! Just go!” Steve called out, not wanting his friend to waste more time in this building. It was wasting away, the bottom level consumed by fire and the top threatening to crash down.
“I’m not leaving without you!” Bucky was insistent. He couldn’t abandon his friends, not after they had saved him. He stopped searching for an alternative when he heard the squealing of metal and looked across the gap to see (Y/N) bending a section of their walkway to give them leverage.
“Steve,” she looked at him, an air of exasperation about her. “We’ve gotta jump. There’s no other way.”
Steve didn’t want to think so. They couldn’t have made the jump, surely. There didn’t seem to be any other way, though. He took a deep breath and then nodded, stepping back until he felt his hands hit the wall behind them.
“Okay. On the count of three.”
(Y/N) nodded, looking determined. Steve took another breath and began the countdown.
“One,” he crouched, bracing his left foot against the wall behind him.
“Two,” (Y/N) shook her hands, attempting to calm her nerves.
“... THREE!” Steve took a running start, bounding as high and as far as he could to the other walkway. (Y/N) was right behind him, leaping to the walkway - but not quite making it.
Her foot slipped against the edge of the other walkway, and she began to fall into the flames engulfing the first floor. She thought she was done for. Surely, this would be the end of her.
But it wasn’t.
Last second, Bucky leaned forward, gathering all of his strength into keeping (Y/N) alive. He held onto her hand tightly, teeth clenched and muscles trembling with the effort of holding her.
“You’re not gonna die,” he wheezed, beginning to pull her up. “I’m not losing you.”
Steve helped his friend pull (Y/N) up onto the walkway, the trio sharing a firm hug once she was safe on the solid surface.
They were safe. They would make it out of here.

When the soldiers began making the long trek home, (Y/n) couldn't help but feel uneasy. She knew that there would be no danger in this moment, and she didn't see Death slinking around the large group either. Turning her head she realized that the feeling was coming from Bucky and Steve. She sighed, taking off her helmet and letting her hair relax. She slowed down and let the two catch up to her.
"I know, you're curious how I knew him."
"More than curious." Bucky stated with furrowed brows. Steve sighed, "(Y/n) I know that you keep secrets but that was a bit much.."
"I know! And I promise that I'm not with those bastards, even if the odds are against me. It's just...Dammit how do I say this.."
She froze, the large group walking away from them. Steve and Bucky stopped to look at her. In this moment, she didn't feel equal with them. She felt small, like when you get caught stealing a cookie behind your mom's back. Their scrutinizing eyes were making her worried, worried that if she said the wrong thing they would not be her friends anymore. Maybe they would throw her jail, say she was a traitor to the country. Then they would learn she's not even real. She doesn't exist. (Y/n) looked down at her hands, hands which were covered in dirt and grime, and the streak of a sharpie. Her hands were callused, showing how she's made it this far. She has fought all odds to be here, to be here with her heroes. She gripped her helmet, before looking at her friends dead into their eyes.
"I know things, things to help win this war, that is not a lie. I keep secrets but it is to benefit you two in general. I am no traitor, I am no monster. I am human like you too. My information is only to help. I would never lie to you two, not after everything we've been through. Steve you remember our talk on the plane- you said you would trust me. This is one of those moments."
Bucky turned to Steve, who was still looking at her. The blonde sighed before nodding, "You're right, I did make that promise. No spy would become friends with two kids from Brooklyn just to join the army..."
Steve had a hard look on his face, "But you're no spy, you're a super soldier, with the same serum running through your veins as mine. That man knew Erskine, so there is no doubt that maybe you did too before this."
"Steve no-"
"Watch it." He said with a frown, "That's Captain Rogers to you."
She stared at him in disbelief, "You're pulling rank!?!"
"Yes I am. Until you have given me an inkling to believe you, then we are not friends- we are coworkers at best."
"Bucky you can't let him do this!"
Bucky looked between them, staring at (Y/n) a bit long and hard before sighing. He turned his back to her and continued walking, "Come on, we need to catch up."
Steve walked with him, leaving (Y/n) alone.
As they reached the base camp, the female could hear the cheers as the soldiers ran to the survivors. Many cheered Bucky and Steve. Only a few recognized her in the back, giving her pats on her back. She watched as they congratulated Steve for saving them.
And just Steve.
Her hands turned into fists, trying not to cry. In moments like these, Steve would make sure that she was congratulated as well. He would pull her in front of him and make sure that she was equal. But he stood there, basking in all the glory. It was him that saved the 107. It was him that blew up the base.
She stood behind them, feeling the shadow that he casted over her. Him and Bucky. She gripped her shield tightly, glaring at them as General Phillips and Peggy came out, congratulating them. Peggy wiped tears from her eyes, saying something about Faith. She kept her eyes on Steve as they talk, and it wasn't until a couple moments that she realized the female super soldier was missing. She looked around, only to find (y/n) in the back. She moved forward to talk, but Steve held her back, a look on his face as he shook his head. Peggy furrowed her brows but acknowledged his command.
(Y/n) watched this in disbelief. Peggy listened to him, she didn't even know what happened. The female soldier watched as Steve didn't ask to be discharged, Phillips just smiled and gave congrats.
The shadow was growing larger over (Y/n), and the female stormed off, wiping her eyes furiously as she made her way to her tent.
Once alone, she threw her shield to the ground, the end getting stuck into the dirt. She threw her helmet across the tent. She risked her fucking life, only for Steve, Bucky, and Peggy not to trust her. Her life was going down the fucking drain after a couple hours.
The feeling was building up in her chest. It bubbled and it was hot like acid, like the tears running down her face. She was angry. She was mad. She was hurt. The star on her chest was worthless if Steve didn't trust her. Her life would fall if he didn't trust her judgement. If he didn't fall in the ice then everything would go to waste. If he didn't trust her she couldn't change the story. If he didn't trust her than she died for nothing.
(Y/n) gripped her hair, more tears falling down onto the dirt below her. Soon, a soft set of footsteps appeared. She knew it was. She grabbed Death in front of her, crying into his chest. He hugged her back, a dark look on his face. She didn't see it of course, but he knew that Prophet was being a dick right now. He and Fate were nothing more than Tricksters.
"Shh...it's ok. I'll fix it, ok? It wasn't supposed to be like this I know. He was supposed to trust you blindly."
"How? You can't mess with the timeline..." she asked, looking up at him.
"Oh I know, I can't mess with things physically, and I can't talk to him, but I can get into his dreams. Sandman owes me a couple." He explained. "Now why don't we dry your tears and get you ready for a meeting at the Allied Forces? I have some clothes that will knock their socks off."
The female laughed softly, wiping her tears. "I'd like that."
That night, as everyone fell asleep, Death walked the base. He had lit a cig and was finishing the last of it. His green eyes stared at Steve Roger's tent. With a scoff he threw his cig to the ground and snuffed it under his show. Digging into his pocket he pulled out a little bag of golden dust, thanks to the Sandman. Death silently made his way into Steve's tent, finding the male asleep soundly in his cot.
If looks could kill, Steve would be dead.
Death took a pinch of dust between his fingers as watched as the gold became a black like ash. He grinned some and decided to take some more, getting enough for a night terror. He sprinkled it across Steve's eyes, watching as the man squeeze his eyes shut at the intrusion.
Then he sat down, and watched Steve have the worst nightmare of his life.

Chapter Text
(Y/n) stood in front of Senator Brandt as she received both hers and Steve's medals of honor. They took Steve of the publicity circuit, so she had to deal with the boos of the people. The excitement and novelty of a female super soldier had worn off, or maybe the cheers she heard in the past were just for Captain America. She gave a forced smile as Brandt shook her hand, she gave a forced wave as the crowd called for Captain America, and she left with a worse mood than she had when she walked on stage.
She let out a deep sigh, her annoyance evident on her face. She knew that Steve is writing up a map as she spoke, showing them where all of the Hydra camps were. She looked down at Steve's medal and she sneered, letting it drop to the dirt. She walked off without it, letting Brandt pick up the piece of metal and scurry behind her. The man had never seen the girl this mad before in his time with her.
"Miss (Y/n) please, I know you and Steve are going through a lover's spat-"
"We are not dating! Why does everyone think that!?" She yelled, her eyes wide in confusion, "I mean I think it's obvious he likes Peggy for fucks sake! And another thing-"
"Ma'am please-"
"Don't call me ma'am that's patronizing! I'm a young woman! In War! I fought those Nazis too! But NOOOOO everyone cheer for Steve! Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I'm here to sit still and look pretty!!" She yelled
"(Y/n) you're mic. is. on." Brandt said.
The young woman sneered and took the mic off, "So what- let them hear! I walked right into that Camp with Steve Rogers- I punched Nazis in the face- I helped the 107 and more escape that prison- I RISK MY LIFE! And All I get is this medal and boos from the people I'm protecting!? Do you know how- how...how heartbreaking that is? To try and do the right thing and have every single person you see tell you that you're wrong for doing it? For making sure that they are safe- that they can sleep in their beds while I and other men out there are sleeping on the ground with a thin sleeping bag? They don't know if they will wake up the next morning? They don't know what goodbye will be their last? They don't know what it's really like out there Brandt- Men are dying- there are families out there dying as we speak as this war rages on and they have the audacity to yell at me and tell me that I'm not worth it to protect them from the horrors that is across that goddamn sea!"
The girl huffed, feeling tears in her eyes. She rolled her eyes, wiping them away, "Great- tears. How wonderful."
There was a thick silence between her a Brandt, and she thought that was the end of it.
But then she heard it. At first it was faint, but it soon grew louder- and louder.
"Lieutenant Star! Lieutenant Star! Lieutenant Star! Lieutenant Star! Lieutenant Star! Lieutenant Star!!"
Brandt and (Y/n) looked towards the stage. The two looked at each other and Brandt gave her a smile, "I think they understand now.."
(Y/n) gave a small smile back, "I think they do."
She walked back onto stage, feeling loved for the first time in a while.
After her extended time with the fans, Phillips picked her up and took her to the underground base. The man seemed to have a soft respect for her. From her perspective, he was like a proud dad, but never spoke about it.
She'd take it.
They reached the base and walked in right when Howard spoke how Steve should be getting his medal.
"Yeah well, someone isn't pretty enough for the stage anymore. You should of heard it- everyone was calling my name!" (Y/n) said walking in, handing Steve's medal with disdain.
Phillips laughed, walking in behind her, "Yeah, after everyone heard your sob story over the mic."
"It was not a sob story it was the truth!" (Y/n) stated to him, not looking at Steve, who seemed to have a small look of shock.
Phillip quickly changed the conversation, focusing on Howard.
"You figure out what this is, yet?" he asked him, looking at one of the HYDRA cartridges that Steve and (Y/n) stole.
Howard sighed, "If you believe Rogers and (Y/n), it’s apparently the most powerful explosive known to man."
"If?" Steve asked Howard, crossing his arms.
"Well, either you’re wrong or Schmidt’s damn near rewritten the laws of physics." Howard stated as he moved to his lab, "And I’m rather fond of the laws of physics..."
"Yeah because you try to break them." (Y/n) commented with a snicker.
Phillips moved towards the map Steve had made, looking at all of the new locations, "These are all of Hydra’s factories."
Steve moved forward to stand by Phillips, "The ones we know about. But Sgt. Barnes said Hydra shipped all the bombs to another facility. And that...wasn’t on the map."
Phillips stood there, thinking for a moment before turning to (Y/n), "What do you think we should do Lieutenant?"
The female had a look of surprise, and so did Peggy and Steve. Phillips was supposed to be in charge, not ask questions to those ranks below him. (Y/n) looked between everyone and sighed, "Agent Carter, coordinate with MI6. We need every Allied eyeball looking for that main Hydra base."
"And what should y'all do why MI6 is searching?" Phillips asked
"We’re going to light a fire under Johann Schmidt’s ass." She said. She turned to Steve, a small smile on her face, "What do you say, Rogers? It’s our map. Think we can wipe Hydra off it?"
Steve looked at everyone and saw that Phillips approved of this. He nodded, "We're gonna need a team."
"You have our best men-"
"Actually...I think we know who we want on our team." (Y/n) said softly, still looking at Steve.
It wasn't much, but it was progress. Progress she was going to use to earn his trust again.

Chapter Text
They were all in a bar, drinking and celebrating the fact they were free from the horrors of HYDRA. But (Y/n) and Steve weren't here for festivities but to recruit.
I don't even think I can get drunk anymore, (Y/N) thought, looking around the bar. She saw the people she needed, though, and she smiled. Dum Dum Dunagan in the flesh before her.
"Hey guys," (Y/n) says first, smiling and waving at them. Steve says hello behind her and gets himself a water bottle. (Y/n) rolls her eyes some more and orders some whiskey. Steve still hasn't talked to her since they got back.
"Captain America and Lieutenant Star, what an honor." Dum Dum says, raising his beer in greeting. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"
"Business," Steve says, gathering the darts off the dartboard and feeling their weight in his hand. "We want the 107th to join us for our upcoming missions with HYDRA."
Dum Dum looked bewildered and faced them fully, his mates joining him.
"Let me get this straight-"
Jones, one of the other men, pipes up, "We barely got out of there alive, and you want us to go back?"
Steve weighs the dart and throws a perfect bullseye, smiling some, "Pretty much."
The men look at each other, making (Y/n) smile to know that this will be her crew. She hopes they're her crew, depending on how Steve acts with her. The men state that they will be joining them, and Dum Dum finishes his glass, speaking, "I’ll fight. Well, I’ll always fight. But you gotta do one thing for me."
"You want a tab?" (Y/n) says, gently taking his glass from him. He smiles at her, grinning, "Ay, you seem to know me well."
She grins, "Well, I do have some killer intuition, ain't that right, Captain?"
Steve pauses his darts, looking at her with a stony face, "Seems so."
She sighed softly to herself, and she and Steve took the glasses back to the bartender. The man behind the counter looks impressed as they ask for another round. Bucky sits at the bar, looking at the two.
"That was the easiest battle of the war," Bucky says, smiling. (Y/n) notices that he's not looking at her, and it hurts. Steve turns to look at her with that same stony expression. "Move along, Lieutenant."
She turned her gaze low, trying not to let the tears well up in her eyes as she grabbed another whiskey and walked away. This hurt worse, Steve, treating her like the enemy. It hurt worse than when she died, she thinks. She glances at them, wondering what they could possibly be talking about now that she's here. As she watches, it seems to be a small argument. She doesn't get to linger too long as Peggy walks in, wearing civilian clothes. She looks...gorgeous. (Y/n)'s hopes rise when the lady notices her, and it crashes down as she turns her head to Steve instead. She looks down at her drink and downs it, slamming the glass so hard it breaks. Of course, no one hears it, as the Invaders are currently singing their hearts out. The super-soldier leaves the pub, unable to stop the tears from flowing.
In her hurry, she doesn't realize that someone is following her.
"(Y/n), wait-" says Bucky. She stops and turns to look at him, crying and in so much emotional pain.
"What- what is it?" She says, wiping her face.
Bucky looks at her softly and moves to her, opening his arms. She feels so much weight crashing down on her, and she collapses right into them. She cries into his chest, unable to hold back.
"I can't do this, Buck, I can't go on knowing he hates me, distrusts me- We were supposed to be doing this together. We were going to change the world!" She sobs,
Buck softly shushes her, "I know, doll, I know..."
"What if I can't—what if he never trusts me again? What do I do then?" she says, looking up into his brown eyes.
"Doll, trust me, he loves you," he says to her, tucking a piece of hair from her face behind her ear. And know that I do, too. But these are difficult times, and we're all on edge now."
"I'm not going to betray him! I'm not- I would never- why can't he trust me, know me, that I would do anything for him, for you! For Peggy and Howard- anyone of my friends?"
He holds her tighter, pressing a soft kiss into her hair, "Because he's Steve, honey, and he's got the world's weight on his shoulders."
"And I don't?" She says, "Do you think I don't deserve the same kindness or trust?"
"No, honey, that's not what I meant." He sighs, "I mean...he doesn't know what to do with it like you and I do. We protected him, little Steve, for the longest time. Now he's got these powers, I guess, and he's guarding himself so he doesn't make a mistake."
"And what- I'm the mistake?"
"No- look, stop twisting my words, doll-"
"How can I not- in every scenario, I'm the bad guy in his eyes!" She says, pulling away from his warm hold. "How can I not feel like I'm doing this for nothing, that I'm not doing the right thing if the man I need to trust me most, to be my partner- thinks I'm a mistake?"
"But you're not the bad guy! I know that!' Bucky says.
"It's not enough!" she says, looking at him. "Be honest with yourself, James! When it comes to him or me, who are you choosing?"
He stops, conflicted. "I...."
"Steve's word is everything; I knew that from meeting him." She says weakly, "I knew that me being in your lives was up to him. I knew that when we got coffee, when I met Sarah when everything happened, and he found out god- did you know he yelled at me? I thought I was going to die again right then and there. I know everything depended on his trust, kindness, and empathy. And if he doesn't have that for me anymore, if he can't trust me to know that I am doing everything in this battle to help us win...then what's the point?"
Bucky stares at her and moves forward to hug her again, but she pulls away. "I'm going to bed. I'll see you in the morning."

Chapter Text
Steve and (Y/n) were walking to the Allie headquarters to find Howard. She knew of course, what the genius was doing at this moment and could hear a faint explosion in he distance from his lab. She chuckles a bit, which makes her give her a side glance. She stopped smiling and looked down, keeping her head low as Steve walked up to the Private sitting at the desk who was reading the newspaper. On the front cover was her and Steve, the big bold letters saying- STARS AND STRIPES: P.O.W CAMP LIBERATED, MIRACLE TREK ACROSS ENEMY LINES.
Steve looks to the private and smiles, "I was looking for Mr. Stark?"
She doesn't look up from her paper at first. "I think he went to look for a broom," she says.
She looks up and smiles upon seeing Captain America and Lieutenant Star. (Y/n) can see her demeanor change, and she goes into flirty mode with Steve. She shifts uncomfortably, looking to the side and burying the nasty feeling in her chest.
"Of course, you're welcome to wait."
The two nod their heads and sit down. (Y/n) sits apart from Steve, trying not to say anything as the Private flirts with Steve. The Private, Lorraine, she sees, crosses her legs, which makes Steve's gaze land on them. She feels something bitter begin to form in her chest as she keeps her gaze forward. Her hand grips her pants leg as Private Lorraine takes her shot.
"I read about what you did."
Steve smiles sheepishly, "Oh, I was just doing what needed to be done."
(y/n) clenches and unclenches her jaw as Steve dismisses her efforts in the battle. She keeps telling herself in her mind, don't react, don't react, don't react-
"Sounded like more than that. You saved nearly two hundred men."
"Really, it wasn't a big thing."
"Tell that to their wives," she continues, leaning closer with a sultry smile.
"I...don't think they were all married," Steve says, still trying to downplay his efforts and (Y/n)'s.
"You're a hero."
And (Y/n) can feel his stupid smile. Can feel his blush on his cheeks. She can feel the Private lean in closer to him and feel the bitterness, bile, and god, is this jealousy?
Steve continues, "Well, depending on whose definition-"
"The women of America owe you their thanks...and seeing they aren't here..."
Lorrain begins to lean in before (Y/n) feels herself snap. The bitterness is evident in her tone and demeanor.
"Private Lorraine. Mind your place. He is a Captain, your superior."
Lorrain stops, finally noticing (Y/n) just a seat away from them, looking at her coldly. The Private backs away when she notices Peggy Carter in the doorway. (Y/n) gets up and stalks past Peggy, heading into the lab as Steve follows, flustered and a bit annoyed with (Y/n). Despite Steve's warnings, Peggy tries to follow and catch up with the Lieutenant. (Y/n) doesn't care, walking to find Howard instead since he still liked her. Howard looks up from his explosive work and looks concerned at the girl before she sits down. He mouths a "whats wrong?"
She shakes her head, "Nothing."
"She's being ridiculous," Steve says. (Y/n) bristles.
"She was out of line. You're a captain. She was a private. Or are you done pulling rank?"
Steve tenses, and the whole room tenses as the two glare at each other deeply. Howard and Peggy look at each other and then back to the standoff before them. The genius clears his throat and moves the topic onto his work instead. "Carbon Polymer! Ought to hold its own against your average German bayonet. Of course, HYDRA's not likely to come at you with a pocket knife..."
He holds their battered shields up, giving a wry smile. "I hear you're sort of attached."
(Y/n) gives a slight nod, looking at her shield with a cool look. Steve sighs, fingering a bullet hole in his, "A lot handier than you think."
"So is the hotel chambermaid, but I wouldn't take her into battle."
The lieutenant snorts and scoffs at Howard's joke. She watches as he pulls up a handful of shields for them to examine. She furrows her brows and notices that there are two Vibranium shields this time instead of one like in the original movie. She and Steve each pick up a shield, and Howard rattles about the other shields with rays and science words she wasn't smart enough to understand.
"This will work, " she says, looking at the shield in her hand. She glances at Steve holding his, a morose feeling washing over her—Captain America and his iconic shield at last.
Howard frowns, "Oh, those are just prototypes."
"It's Vibranium, Howard, not just a prototype." She comments, looking to the man. She knows Steve is glaring at her, but she ignores it. "But I'm curious how you got enough for two, considering it's rarity."
"I got lucky, there was another order of Vibrainium available when I got my hands on it," Howard explains. (y/n) nods, mentally noting to say thank you to Death later for his obvious involvement. She should go to Wakanda after all this.
Steve tears his eyes off of (y/n) too Howard. "What does the metal do?"
"It's completely vibration absorbent, makes bullets feel like cotton balls," Howard explains. (Y/n) moves down the way where Peggy comes around. Steve lifts his shield to her and smiles. "What do you think?"
Peggy tilts her head and looks it over. (Y/n), However, it is still bitter. She picks up the nearby gun and aims it at Steve's shield. Everybody ducks and Steve covers himself with the shield as she rings three bullets into it, each shell turning flat and falling to the ground. Once it's said and done, she gives an icy smile.
"Seems like it works."
She hands Peggy the gun back and walks back, noting how Steve and Howard stare at her with shock and something else she can't place. She looks down at the uniform designs Howard had been making and picks them up. "Our uniforms..."
Howard gulps and nods.
"Whatever you want Ma'am."
