Chapter Text
“So, Batman,” Clark said conversationally after another routine meeting in the Watchtower. “How’s Robin been? I haven’t heard any updates in a while.”
Batman begrudgingly paused and faced him, expression perfectly neutral. “She’s fine.” He made to turn back toward the Zeta tube.
“She??” screeched Flash, popping up in front of him like a supercharged jack-in-the-box. “What do you mean, ‘she?’”
Batman cast a withering glare at Flash, then expanded it to include the entire room when he saw them staring. It was one of the most potent silences Clark had felt in years.
“Robin is going through some personal and family matters at the moment, and I would appreciate professionalism and respect in regards to this matter.”
“Oh–of course, Batman.” Wonder Woman bowed her head slightly and smiled. “I am glad to see you supporting your partner through a confusing and difficult time. Please inform Robin that she is still welcome to call or visit if she’s up for it.”
Batman grunted. Clark knew he was far too protective of his partner to get him her involved in the Justice League. In fact, he still hadn’t let them meet her at all, no matter how much they hinted at it! He mentally applauded Diana for her attempt even as Batman turned on his heel and ghosted away.

Flash: EXSUECME NE WDLEELVOMPENT HEL LODJKASL;
Cyborg: You said it, man
Aquaman: Pardon?
Vixen: Translation: excuse me, new development, hello
Aquaman: Ah. Yes.
Hawkgirl: I wonder what prompted this change for Robin?
Superman: I mean it’s really not our business, right?
GL: Hate to break it to you, but we crossed that line a long time ago.
Flash: the tea is too juicy to ignore and it must be discussed!!
MM: So Robin has chosen to become a girl? I do not understand why this is such a big deal.
Green Arrow: Lets just say its a bigger deal for people who cant shapeshift whenever they want
Vixen: trust me MM its a whole can of worms. I’ll send you some stuff later about it
MM: My thanks, Vixen
GL: Ok no big deal so what do we do with this info
Cyborg: Just switch pronouns and call it a day?
Flash: this is so wild im so glad batman is being a supportive partner while robin figures herself out
Flash: wait he said personal matters and family matters right??? Is batgirl/spoiler mad about this???? Nightwing????
Cyborg: Nightwing is definitely not a homophobe.
Green Arrow: How do you know?
Hawkgirl: without counting our pretty strong evidence pool that he's been with Batman since you don't seem to buy it
Cyborg: I’ve been sworn to secrecy on the details but Nightwing is almost certainly head over heels for another guy.
GL: Who??
Vixen: Please tell me Nightwing isn’t cheating with a partner too… he seems so nice!
Hawkgirl: Wouldn’t put it past him after all this
Flash: wait is it you are the 2 of you still seeing each other
Cyborg: I literally just said I’ve been sworn to secrecy
Flash: theory confirmed!!!

Chapter 2
Notes:
This one grew a mind of its own, so now you get some chapters!
For anyone who cares, this fic comes chronologically after my fill for August, which should be posted to the series next week. This timeline didn't really matter until the surprise chapters started coming, so don't be surprised if I flip the series order around a little for these two.
Chapter Text
Steph didn’t have access to the Zeta beams. This became extremely unfortunate in the amount that it limited her pranking abilities, although there was certainly plenty to be done with Robin’s true identity remaining a secret.
“Dear Justice League,” she narrated, using her most flowery handwriting. “Thank you so much for the card! If you notice Batman’s cape shimmering more than usual, know that it was inspired by your extensive use of glitter glue.”
“No,” Tim said. He was video calling in from home, where Mr. Drake had him on lockdown ever since he’d discovered his son was parading around Gotham dressed in an armored circus costume.
“What are you gonna do about it?” Steph laughed. “Dick already agreed to be my alibi.”
“As if Bruce will believe that for a second,” Tim sighed with almost enough drama to hide his amusement.
Steph stuck out her tongue in retaliation to his valid point and turned back to her letter. “I would love to meet you all in person one day, but for now Batman believes I am safer as an unknown, and I must agree with him. Thanks for putting up with this Grumpy Gus for me! It’s good for him to have friends. Love, Robin.”
She held up the card to her phone camera, wishing she owned a personal laptop or something instead of just her old phone and access to the unsecured school computer lab. “What do you think?”
“It’s tacky,” Tim said, eyeing the neon pink construction paper she’d snuck out from the school office and the glittery rainbow stickers she’d dug out of the bottom of her junk drawer. “I like how you dotted the ‘i’ with a little heart.”
“Classic,” Steph agreed.
“How are you going to get it to them?”
“Easy,” she said. “Nightwing.”
Tim’s face dropped out of view and his image shuddered. Steph assumed he was flopping dramatically back on his mattress. “Who let the two of you meet?” he moaned. “I’d like to have a few words.”
“You did, idiot,” Steph smirked. “Gonna go back in time and punch yourself in the face?”
“At this rate I just might.”
…
For the next letter, Steph decided to cut out the middleman and duct taped a large, garish, red, yellow, and green card to the roof of a bus destined for Metropolis. SUPERMAN AND FRIENDS, she wrote on the front in big, bold letters.
Dear Justice League,
My dearest Batman will never tell you, but he is an absolute sucker for chocolate. Cookies, brownies, pretzels, you name it! If it has chocolate on or in it, you can set it in any strategic location and watch as he subtly inches in that direction and makes at least three disappear under his cape. It’s hilarious.
Have fun!
Robin
PS you didn’t hear this from me.
Several days later, Steph found Batman sitting in the cave and munching on a handful of chocolate covered pretzels.
“Why do you think the League is suddenly setting out snacks everywhere?” he growled, almost like a threat.
“No idea, boss,” Steph shrugged. “Can I have one?”
Batman’s grip on his snack tightened just a bit. “Go ask Agent A.”
Steph rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say.”
…
Being Robin felt something like being a baby dragon might. Steph could jump rooftops, grapple across the city, and use fancy new kickflips to her heart’s content; all she had to do was stay in Mama Batman’s territory and return to the nest every once in a while to check in. If anyone harmed her, she knew fury like never before would rain down on their heads.
After all, everyone had seen Batman after the second Robin died. The Joker was lucky he could still move.
“Raah!” Steph yelled, jumping down from a small shop’s roof onto a crook and simultaneously knocking his buddy on the forehead with a Birdarang. “Take that!” They thought they’d been leaving quietly, but she’d clocked them fifteen minutes ago already. Suckers.
“Hey!” Their useless lookout attempted to join the fight, but Steph hit the woman with a swift uppercut to the jaw and she went down hard.
Steph stood still and breathed for a minute while the hapless cashier slowly crawled out from behind the cash register. “Thank you.”
“All in a night’s work,” she grinned just as her earpiece buzzed. “Okay, gotta get back to my partner. Bye!” She swooped off, leaving the gaping cashier behind—his poorly hidden phone wouldn’t have gotten a good image of her, but hopefully he’d recorded the audio for the Justice League’s gossiping pleasure.
“Robin,” Batman said just as she alighted on his rooftop. “I know what you’re doing.”
“What?” She blinked up at him innocently. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Hn,” Batman said and turned away, which was basically permission as far as Steph was concerned. She did an internal fist pump and fought hard to keep from doing a little victory dance where he could see.
Instead, she tapped her earpiece discretely to change the channel. “Nightwing,” she whispered, “Plan Cock-a-doodle-doo is go.”
…
Steph watched giddily from the Batcave, ratty pajama pants on and popcorn bucket ready, as Nightwing’s mask cam displayed the Justice League HQ.
The first person she saw turning around a sterile white corner was Green Lantern, whistling a cheery tune as he walked through the hall. “Hey, Lantern,” Nightwing’s voice crackled into the speaker.
“Nightwing! How’s it going, man?”
“I’ve been alright,” Nightwing replied. “Robin’s been having a tough time lately, but we’ve all been trying to support him.”
Green Lantern visibly did a double take when he registered what Nightwing had said. “Uh.. glad to hear it. By the way—”
“Well, I’ve got something to discuss with Batman. See you in the meeting,” Nightwing cut him off cheerfully and the screen swept around until Green Lantern was out of view.
“...Sure,” Steph heard faintly, and bit back her giggles as Nightwing continued on into the main hall.
“Nightwing!” Flash called, appearing out of nowhere.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Oh, nothing much,” Flash waved a hand dismissively. “How are you and the family? Is Robin doing okay?”
Nightwing laughed. “Yeah, just a couple days ago she took down some crooks like a regular pro. I’d say she’s doing fine.”
As he spoke, Aquaman had begun edging into the frame. Steph could still only see half his face when he joined the conversation. “In my years as a leader I have learned that physical performance does not always mean mental peace. Are you sure Robin is faring well after the difficulties Batman confided in us?”
“Well,” Nightwing sounded like he was giving the matter some thought. “Things with his Dad still haven’t cleared up entirely, but I do think he’s doing better than he was.”
Aquaman and Flash shared a bewildered look, and both turned back to Nightwing with questions written all over their faces. Before anything more could be said, Superman called the meeting to order and Nightwing hastily turned off his cam.
Steph pouted. Just because Justice League meetings were always top secret didn’t mean he had to ruin her fun!
“Miss Brown?”
She whirled around and came face-to-face with Alfred Pennyworth, the world’s most distinguished butler. “Yeah?”
“I seem to recall Master Tim has secured permission from his father for visitors. Perhaps you would appreciate a lift next door.”
Steph’s mouth curled into an involuntary little smile. If she couldn’t watch Dick confuse the League, hanging out with Tim in person might be the next best thing. “Sure, Alfred. Let me get my jacket.”
“As you say.”
…
“Fired!” Steph raged over the phone as she strapped on her Spoiler costume once again. Screw Batman, this one had always been more comfortable anyway. “Can you believe that? For disobeying orders? Ha! As if no one’s ever done that before.”
“I mean…”
“Shut up, Tim,” she said. “I’ve got a plan and I’ll prove him wrong.”
“Steph—”
“You can keep Robin. I don’t even want it back, and I’m sure your Dad will let you go eventually. Spoiler is clearly the superior option, and Babs has my back anyway.”
“Steph—”
“Nope! Bye Tim!” She hit the End Call button before he could get in another word and threw open her window, grabbing a few supplies and climbing up to her rooftop. Once there, she finally filled the helium balloons she’d been saving, all in red, yellow, and green, of course. She tied a tag to each balloon containing a part of the coded message, then secured all the balloons together around a cheap children’s recording device she’d gotten for $1 at a thrift store.
Steph inhaled a couple breaths of helium before hitting the Record button. “Hey Justice League,” she said, high and squeaky and unidentifiable, “Superman! This is Robin and boy do I have some news for you! Can you figure it out?”
She knew they would. She’d made the code pretty simple, and even if they weren’t good enough detectives to figure out that Batman and Robin weren’t actually dating, they were certainly smart enough for this.
Steph set the recording to repeat every few seconds and gleefully let the handful of balloons lift the recorder into the sky, hopefully to be found by Superman soon enough. As it flew away above her head, Steph’s eyes caught on a bulky silhouette on a rooftop nearby, not the right shape to be Batman.
Ah, well, what the heck.
“Red Hood!” she shouted. The figure turned her way. “Get ready for the fireworks to begin!”
With a cackle, she grappled away into the night. The balloons were only step one in her revenge plan, after all. The Gotham crime families wouldn’t know what hit them.

Bat Speculation League

Green Arrow: BATMAN IS A FURRY
Flash: idk whats gotten into robin lately but i am the biggest robin fan
Aquaman: The advice has been highly entertaining to follow
Superman: You’re not the ones who panicked about a possible threat and only found balloons
Flash: its just like that movie except instead of a house it was a robin prank flying in the sky lol
GL: I think I took some moderate psychic damage when we decoded the message though…. Batman is a furry?
Vixen: Batman is a furry! Lol Robin isn’t wrong!
MM: Based on the definition I have been provided, I’m not sure this information is accurate…
Cyborg: Trust me @MM it almost certainly isn’t but… it is a very close comparison
Aquaman: Does this not also make Robin a furry?
Flash: pfffffff lol adlkfjdl;
Hawkgirl: Wait. Yes. Oh my gosh.
Vixen: Haha why didn’t we think of that??
GL: My favorite is still the letter about the chocolate snacks…
Superman: Me too
Hawkgirl: I didn’t even see him take those cookies the other day, he just swooped past and then boom! Plate empty
Superman: No one can resist the Kent family cookies
GL: Yeah yeah we all know he liked yours the best, no need to rub it in
Vixen: I think that discovery lowers his intimidation factor from like… infinity to only a billion
Green Arrow: Wow it’s almost like he’s actually a guy under all that costume
Cyborg: His file in the system does identify him as human, at least
GL: Yeah but so does mine so how much does that mean, really
MM: No matter the precise biology or powers of our teammate, it is nice to get to know him better as a man rather than only as a hero
Superman: Agreed.
Vixen: Remember the note about putting him on kid duty? It totally worked? Why is Batman so good with little kids???
Flash: Batgirl duh. It’s so cute!!
Hawkgirl: Weird as it sounds, maybe he was a decent dad
Green Arrow: Nope I still can’t see it.
Cyborg: My favorite was when Robin spammed his comm with Call Me Maybe during our meeting loud enough for everyone to hear
MM: Indeed, Batman’s expression was quite amusing
Flash: maybe if by amusing you actually mean terrifying
Green Arrow: This most recent one with the furry still wins I’d say
Aquaman: I have been enjoying getting to see more of Robin with these practical jokes. I did not realize she had such a sense of humor
GL: She? He? They? Why does Nightwing keep switching all the time?
Vixen: non binary?
Flash: but he does it like between sentences when they havent even talked or seen each other? but then other times its consistent for like a whole day?
Cyborg: No idea.
MM: Perhaps someone should simply ask Batman
[Flash is typing…]
[Vixen is typing…]
[GL is typing…]
Superman: Fine, I’ll do it.
Flash: yesssss

Chapter Text
Steph trembled. Buildings were burning, explosions so loud she felt them vibrate in her chest, and the arms shielding her from danger tightened. “What were you thinking?” growled a mechanical voice.
“He fired me,” she managed. “I just wanted to prove him wrong.”
“Fat lot of good that did you,” her savior grumbled. Steph flinched, but remained quiet. She couldn’t dispute him, after all. She’d set out to prove Batman wrong about her, and all she’d done instead was somehow start a gang war and get captured by Black Mask.
“Now what?” she said.
The arms around her slowly released, letting Steph support her own weight in the grungy cement alleyway still close enough to the chaos for her to smell the smoke. There was a moldy trash bin not far away, with flies eagerly buzzing through the stink; it looked pretty similar to how Steph was feeling at the moment. She turned to face the gleaming helmet behind her, biting her lip.
“You’re asking me?” the Red Hood said incredulously.
She nodded.
“Kid, I am absolutely the last person you want to give you advice about Batman.”
“I don’t want advice about Batman,” Steph said, wiping the sweat and tears from her face with a bloodied forearm. “He fired me, You, on the other hand, saved my life. And Spoiler is better than Robin anyway. What am I supposed to do now?”
Red Hood grunted. “First thing’s first,” he said, and handed her a burner phone. “Call your boytoy and tell him you’re alive before he blows up my phone. Batman can think whatever he wants.”
She took the phone delicately, wondering if this might be a trap, and found Tim’s personal number programmed in. Huh. She looked up sharply at Red Hood, but it was impossible to discern any features behind his signature helmet. Tim’s number was labeled Little Wing for some reason; Steph suspected it might be some kind of code, although she had no idea what it might mean. She glanced up again and Hood nodded toward the phone. She hummed in agreement.
After holding up a peace sign and taking a selfie with as much aesthetic fire in the background as she could manage, she sent Tim their personal all-clear code and discreetly scrolled back through Hood’s contact list. He had Alfred’s number as well, she was pretty sure, labeled simply A, and another number she didn’t recognize that was intriguingly labeled Demon Mom.
Hood pointedly cleared his throat. Steph looked at him sheepishly and handed back the phone. “How do you think Batman might react to a ghost in the Cave?” she said with a careful smile on her face and vengeance in her heart.
Hood let out a short bark of incredulous laughter. “You might be my new favorite, Blondie,” he said. “There’s only one way to find out.”
“Wanna help me pull it off?”
Hood hesitated, staring at her for a long moment while she desperately wished she could see his face. “Do you even know who I am?”
Steph shrugged and pointed to the pocket that held his phone. “You’ve got Robin’s personal number in there, which tells me you either already know his identity or he let you figure it out on purpose. If you know that, you probably know B’s as well, which also leads to Agent A. If you were really a villain, Robin and O would have digitally crushed your operations by now. Plus, I’m a Crime Alley brat, myself. I know what you’ve been up to on these streets, and it hasn’t all been fantastic, I’ll admit, but I can tell you’re trying to help.”
Hood shook his head. “So you’re inviting me into the Batcave? Just like that?”
“I think you’re overestimating how many people T actually trusts,” said Steph. “I’m pretty sure you’re the only person who has that number other than me, Batman, and Nightwing. Besides,” she added with a smirk, “I’m gonna need a partner in crime to pull this off, and B will get suspicious if one of his boys is missing.”
Hood gave her another long stare. “I’ll think about it.”
Steph held out her hand to shake and he begrudgingly took it. “Thanks!” she said. “Meet me at the Cave on Tuesday, and you’re not invited if you can’t find it yourself!”
She ended the handshake and took off, giggling, as Hood grumbled something about incorrigible kids behind her.
…
Hood arrived at the back entrance to the BatCave in jeans and a red hoodie with only a domino mask to cover his identity. He had a weird streak of white hair over his forehead, which seemed like an oddly distinctive choice for an undercover crime lord, and his posture was more tense and defensive than when he’d grabbed her right out of Black Mask’s hands.
“Yo,” Steph said, striving for casual to hide her surprise. “I see you found the place.”
Hood gave a stiff nod. Steph squinted at him. “Are you okay, man?”
“Fine.” His voice was raspy and didn’t reach much above a whisper.
“If you say so,” said Steph doubtfully, and let him through the entrance.
Hood was silent as they made their way through the tunnels that led to the main area, and Steph felt more and more jitters in her stomach as their footsteps echoed around the rock. Was she really going to do this? She started to talk into the silence, if only to drown out her sudden doubts. “I made sure everyone would be gone while we set up. Tim’s still grounded, but I think he’s almost driven his dad crazy enough to let him free again. B and Nightwing are at one of the boring League meetings, so they should be back in about an hour, and Agent A went on a grocery run. He knows I’m okay, by the way; I might want to torture B just a little, but I have a heart, you know?”
Hood made a strangled grunt in acknowledgement. Something was definitely up with the guy, more than just the inherent threat of walking into Batman’s base of operations. Steph continued, “I’ve been practicing my makeup to look like burns, and I ripped an old purple shirt to shreds that can pass for my costume in this crappy lighting. I’m sort of just planning to stand there for a few seconds at first, and then we can gradually escalate with the lights and the sound effects. I’ve even got a few glitter bombs for the finale.”
They turned a corner and were met with the sprawling sight of the BatCave in all its glory. Steph wasn’t sure what she expected, but it hadn’t been Hood freezing in his tracks and drawing a sharp breath in as though he’d been stabbed. Sure, the place was cool as heck, but it wasn’t like it was Black Mask’s terrifying dungeon or anything.
They set everything up with time to spare, and Steph was spinning around in the BatChair for something to do when she accidentally hit a switch and the lights around the Jason Todd Memorial Case came up.
“What is—” Hood cut himself off with a strangled sound as he drew closer.
“Oh,” Steph said. “That’s for Robin number two. The Joker got him, you know, and B’s been pretty much destroyed about it as long as I’ve known him.” She hesitated, then added, “If you’re ever in a fight with him, please, for the sake of the city, do not bring it up. He’d literally rather be shot.”
She waited for Hood to respond, even if he laughed her off, but he only stood silently, staring at the case. “Hood?” she said, but he didn’t move. His breath hitched warningly, but Steph didn’t know if it was fear, anger, or something else entirely.
Suddenly a door above them creaked tellingly, and a posh British voice called down the stairs. “Miss Spoiler, is that—”
Alfred didn’t finish his question. Steph heard the brief, deafening cascade of something shattering against the rocks as whatever tray he’d held went smashing to the floor. In a second he was with them, not alarmed as she had thought, but some other emotion. Tears glinted in his eyes as he clutched at Hood by the forearms, pulling him close for inspection. “Master Jason?” he whispered.
What?
“Alfie,” Hood mumbled, looking overwhelmed as Alfred reached up and removed his mask.
“Please lad, is it you?”
Hood attempted a laugh, but it broke somewhere in the middle. “It’s me. I’m the boy who stole the Batmobile’s tires, the one who was afraid to even touch the library for weeks, and the only person you trusted with the secret ingredient for perfect cookies.”
“Biscuits,” Alfred said in a watery voice.
Hood shook his head. “Cookies,” he said more firmly.
“Oh, my boy.” Steph couldn’t stop staring as Alfred’s lip wobbled—the man who prided himself on his unflappability—and he pulled Hood in for a tight hug.
She stood over at the BatComputer for a few minutes, glancing at the clock and tapping her foot, before she finally had to speak up. “So, I hate to interrupt,” she called, “But B and Nightwing are due back in like five minutes, and I get the feeling Master Jason here might want the option to bail.”
The two pulled apart, both blinking as if they’d forgotten she was there. Hood sniffed, about to wipe his nose on his sleeve, when Alfred tutted and produced a handkerchief instead, ignoring his own wet cheeks to dab at Hood’s face. “Tim knows,” Hood confessed as Alfred worked. “I got your number from him. I’ll call? Please don’t tell B. I can’t… right now, I can’t.”
“You call me and let me visit, lad, or I will come for your hide,” said Alfred. “Master Bruce misses you terribly, but for now, your secret is safe with me.”
“Thanks,” Hood mumbled.
Steph cleared her throat loudly. “I would like to reiterate: Bats coming! Cry later, scadaddle now! I’ll do the ghost bit myself, I guess, but honestly I don’t think my tearful reunion is gonna be near this good.”
Hood finally tore himself away from Alfred and jogged backward toward the exit, saluting as he went. “You’re doing the Lord’s work, Blondie. Keep them on their toes. Alfie,” he paused. “I’ll call.”
“Go!” Steph shouted after him, even as she jumped onto the rock shelf above the BatComputer and scrambled around the wall to a good spot. Alfred retreated up the stairs, probably to check the status of whatever he’d dropped on the floor. Steph shook off the rogue emotions witnessing that reunion had caused and put on her best angry ghost face.
The Zeta beam activated and Batman and Nightwing stepped through, both looking rather more exhausted than they normally would. Steph bit her lip to keep from smiling and silently grappled up into the rigging high above the cave.
Go time.

Hawkgirl: Is Batman… okay?
Green Arrow: He has been kind of all over the place I think
Cyborg: I thought so too, but it’s kind of hard to tell given only like a third of his face and some grunts
Flash: no something is definitely off but more like something happened and hes recovering now id say
Superman: Agreed, I think he’s just coming out of crisis mode from something. Maybe there was a close call with Arkham or the Joker?
GL: Yeah that would do it
MM: Batman’s emotions have been somewhat unusual today, but I believe there is no cause for concern
Aquaman: Thank you, this is good to hear!
Superman: In other news… I finally asked him about Robin
Vixen: What did he say??
Aquaman: Do not leave us in suspense.
Superman: Robin is definitely a boy
Flash: are you sure??? what did he say exactly
GL: also how did you phrase the question?
Superman: I said “is Robin male or female? Or another option?”
Superman: and he looked at me like I was an idiot and grunted
Green Arrow: Ah the famous BatGlare
Flash: and the batgrunt lol
GL: I think he gives me that look on an hourly basis whenever we’re in the same room
MM: And you confirmed from this that Robin is male?
Superman: Well then Nightwing came by and said something like “Don’t be that mean, just tell them he’s a boy” so that helped.
Vixen: Sure just let us all think you could read minds for a second before dropping that tidbit
Flash: i was just assuming their epic bromance was enough to interpret bat signals
Vixen: Fair enough
Superman: on the bright side, sounds like those family issues have resolved for the most part!
Hawkgirl: Good for Robin!
Cyborg: I’ve updated his file in case anyone else wants to check
MM: We appreciate your thorough record keeping
GL: I’ve got the conspiracy board!
Flash: race you there oh wait haha
GL: Wow. Ruin my fun why don’t you
Flash: thanks dont mind if i do
Notes:
What Jason said: I got your number from Tim
What Jason meant: Tim programmed your number into my phone while my back was turned as if I didn't already have it memorized as some kind of hint that maybe I should possibly let you know I'm alivePS: Also, in case you missed it, consider checking out the bonus drabble chapter I posted yesterday on Still a believer (But I don't know why)
