Chapter 1: The Argument
Chapter Text
At Faraway town, it was very late in the night and Mari was staying at Kelsey and Henry's house. The dark-haired girl yawned "Kelsey..how are you..not tired yet...?" a bewildered expression showed on her face. "Uh-" he stuttered, "I- You- I don't r-really know..." he responded wearily. The brothers were feeling exhausted from all the practice they did for their basketball team from the morning all the way until the dusk settled in. It appeared that Mari had already fallen asleep onto Henry's shoulder. "I'm...just gonna stay up...because...yeah..." he began to shake slightly, running up the stairs as he grabbed his brothers hand, dragging Henry along with him. Mari slipped in and out of conciousness as her head hit the floor, trying hard to stay asleep. Henry questioned "Kel, what is this about? Why are we at the top of the goddamn stairs?! WHERE'S MARI?!?!" "Look." he said as he stood his ground firmly. "I need you to understand that you're my brother and you're not a bad person, just accept that fact." They were both jaded and clearly not in control of their emotions. Mari woke up on the cold hard floor, confused as to why the brothers would suddenly leave her. She heard the arguing behind the wall, but tried not to pay any attention to it. She stumbled to the staircase to find Henry and Kelsey arguing with eachother. Henry screamed as he blocked Kelsey's path, "THIS IS HOW I FEEL!!! LOOK AT WHAT YOU FUCKING MADE ME DO!!!" Mari's heart sank to the ground. "Why were they arguing? Is this my fault?" she thought to herself, her heart began to beat faster and faster each passing second. Kelsey didn't understand what was happening. "Why...why would my brother think such things? What's Mari going to think about this?" he thought to himself. He flailed his arms in a panic and ended up shoving his own brother off of the long flight of stairs. A loud thud echoed throughout the house.

"HEEEEEENRYYYYYYYY!!" Kelsey called out to his brother. "Henry, are- are you w-with us?!" Mari rested her thumb on his palm to check if he had a pulse. He didn't answer, no pulse was there. Kelsey began to cry. He didn't mean to push him down the stairs. He couldn't bear the thought of losing his own brother. Mari picked up the body to find Hero seemingly asleep. "I-if he's asleep, th-th- he- th-then surely he should wake eventually...right?" Mari said, her voice breaking, tears streaming down her face as she tried to force a smile. Kelsey broke down in tears. "WHAT'S MOM AND DAD GOING TO THINK?!?! ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO TELL THEM THE TRUTH?!?! WHAT DO WE DO??" He thought to himself, "This isn't happening, none of this is real, this is a bad dream and I just need to wake up." as he put his hands in his face. His brain felt fuzzy, it felt like everything was a dream as this vision of an empty white room kept flashing. A familiar voice told the two to pick up the body, the children had no choice but to listen through the tears as they felt there could possibly be hope. The darkness outside called towards them as they stepped out of the door and into the backyard. Kelsey tried to convince himself that this was all a dream. None of them had experienced such trauma and regret in their life. Mari shifted her gaze towards the jump rope that lied next to the tree. "Well..." Kelsey said dejectedly, "Looks like we have no choice, Mari." The crinkling of the leaves and the gust of the wind engulfed them as he tied the rope to his dead brother's neck. He pondered why he felt strangely calm as he hung Henry's corpse from the tree, attempting to pass his death as a suicide. He hated himself for feeling this way. Kelsey felt a hand clutch his as he looked up to see his best friend Mari sobbing uncontrollably. "E-e-everything is g-" she sniffled midway through her sentence, unable to finish it as she tried to choke back tears. Suddenly, she turned towards the tree. Something stared back at the children. They realized that this was not a dream, this was all real. "Eventually, you'd have to tell them the truth, Mari.", he assured her, seeming strangely stoic. "You must leave now. It's too late."
