“I’ve imprinted.”

Summary:

Esther stared at her youngest pups eyes, the press of pure panic edging her features as she confessed her next words.

“I think… I’ve imprinted on someone.”

Enid’s voice was quiet, the newfound knowledge about how choosing packmates and a life mate making her think.

The creeping fear of being pushed away brought a wave of nausea.

Murray spoke for her, understanding his mate wasn’t the most gentle with her questioning.

“Who did you imprint on pup?”

“M-my roommate.”

Chapter Text

Enid’s fork scratched the plate in front of her for the umpteenth time, her mind racing with thoughts since her flight landed in California.

She was far from hungry, if anything, her usual starvation for attention was the last thing she truly wanted right now.

However, Nevermore was quick to send out emergency announcements after the Hyde, which included a detailed explanation about a certain pastel wolf.

She knew her mother was going to demand information, listening to her brothers time during the semester first before hearing Enid.

Which Enid was grateful for, this would let her think of some sort of excuse to skip over some details here and there. That is if she could’ve thought of any.

“Enid.”

The small blood moon werewolf stared up at her father, the trance of her thoughts gone as he tucked her into his arm in a side hug, “knew you could do it, kiddo.” The firm, reassuring squeeze he gave was returned full heartedly, her arms wrapping around his mid section.

Esther was quick to usher the boys away upstairs, encouraging them to rest up after such a long flight back home.

The dishes gathered and discarded into the soapy water in the sink, left to soak while she occupied herself with her thoughts.

Honestly, the events that happened brought an uncomfortable edge, a dreadfulness to her core at the harsh reality that she could’ve lost her entire pack, the boys and Enid.

Enid. Oh sweet lord, her runt could’ve died.

She knows she wasn’t the most delicate mother, prioritizing the ability to shift from her only daughter over their happiness.

Another brick for the bag of guilt she felt.

Esther waited until she saw her mate release the small wolf from their hug, a tender embrace that she realized she couldn’t recall the last time she shared one with her youngest pup.

“Enid.”

Her mothers voice was low, it wasn’t threatening in any way but that didn’t stop the small shiver that crawled up Enid’s spine.

Esther winced at the sight of her child, the healing raw scars plastered across her face would only haunt her.

She wasn’t upset, she wasn’t…she…was…

“How could you Do Something So RECKLESS?!”

Enid flinched at the growing shout, her hands fisted as she looked at her shoes for a moment, ready to take whatever reprimand her mother had. She was beyond tired and didn’t have the energy to fight right now.

“Esther, please calm down.”

Murray stepped in front of the pastel girl, his arms spread in attempt to block Enid from her sight, afraid things might escalate.

The request only made the older woman more desperate, her closing steps blocked as Murray held her, pulling her away to give Enid space but she wasn’t having it.

Her hands pushing at his grip, as she tried to reach her child.

“Ηρέμησε? Ηρέμησε!? Πώς περιμένεις να μάθω…θα μπορούσες να είχες πεθάνει.” (“Calm down? Calm Down!? How do you expect me to knowing…You could’ve died.”)

Enid’s gaze finally meeting hers as she spoke, her voice cracking as she fought to hold her composure, pushing down the screaming sob that wanted to be released from her chest. Her wolf aching knowing her only non-wolf pup was so ready to fight a monster a thousand times stronger then her.

Willingly at that, fully knowing she never shifted before.

“Κι αν..Κι αν δεν μετατοπίσατε;” (“What if..What if you didn't shift?”)

“Θα ήμουν καλύτερα νεκρός παρά ένας μοναχικός λύκος υποθέτω.” (“i would've been better off dead than a lone wolf i guess.”)

Esther’s eyes widening at the dark tone, her lip quivering at the knowledge Enid would’ve chosen death, DID choose to do something so suicidal.

“είμαι πολύ κουρασμένος. Νύχτα.” (“I’m…really tired. Night.”)

Esther’s crestfallen face cradled into her mates bicep, Murray’s hold tightening to console her as she watched Enid’s retreating figure fade with every step she took upstairs.

Her hands hold etching tighter into his arm as she tried desperately to hold back her tears.

“What have I done to her, Murray?”

Rhetorical or not, that didn’t stop him from tossing an opinion, “just…give her some space.”

His words did little to ease her pain.

All those years pushing, trying to get the youngest pup to connect with her wolf, experts, therapist, camp, home remedies, she’s done EVERYTHING.

Anything it took to find out what was wrong, only to connect the dots she had only pushed her child away. Ruined her will.

One thought crossing her mind as she heaved for breath.

“How do I fix this?”
