Subject: Your Attention Required: Request for Research Data - 028 - BB - XX2AB
Greetings,
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Feen Jha', a Ph.D student at Imperial Center University studying biomedical materials and design. My research examines replacement rates of artificial limbs and organs to determine their long-term efficacy and potential side effects.
As you may be aware, Imperial Center University partners with the Grand Imperial Medical Facility (formerly known as the Grand Republic Medical Facility) to provide doctoral students with concrete opportunities for applied research. As a member of this program, I have taken it upon myself to review the Facility’s archives for medical cases that involve significant usage of artificial limbs.
I'm reaching out regarding a curious case I encountered in the archives that would have occurred in 0 AFE, roughly speaking. Unfortunately, the dates - along with all other information - are rather scant. All I can find are several references regarding, to my bewilderment, the installation of a life support system that involves a bizarre collection of medical assistance tools.
Although the records are sparse and missing several schematics, the schematics that are included indicate: (1) replacement of all four limbs; (2) hermetically-sealed suit that implies severe and comprehensive fourth degree burns; (3) artificial cervical vertebrae drilled into the spinal cord and connected via an external collar; (4) torso garb and chest units to monitor cardiopulmonary and neural systems that weigh over 15 kg in combination, nearly 15 times the recommended weight; (5) machine regulation of the pulse; (7) cables plants connected via a thick central cable to a chest computer; (8) an additional set of cables connecting the lungs and throat which could have only been installed via hours of microscalpel surgery, and, most inexplicably, (9) regular chemical injections of substances I have never encountered before in my career.
Obviously, you can understand my interest. From a biomedical perspective, this technology represents an unparalleled marvel. I cannot imagine the being lived long, given the extent of injuries that would call for such extreme medical intervention; however, I am curious as to the resulting medical records for whatever remainder of their life occurred.
I hope that the Grand Imperial Medical Facility will be able to assist me in my search for information, as is conducive to the long-established partnership between our two fine organizations. Please do let me know as to if I can receive permission to access, and the proper contacts as necessary.
Thank you for your time.

I've been telling them for months the infodesk droids were a waste of money. Wish they'd bring back the interns!
Looks like the data department might have accidentally mixed up some files. I'll forward it over to them so they can sort it out. Not sure what the protocol is on whether they'll reply or we still have to, but either way, not our problem until they clean things up.

Had a great time last night! Hope we can do it again sometime soon, we could grab breakfast this time. Maybe after happy hour on Taungsday? The wife's out of town, so I don't have anything else going on.
Sending you this chain because it looks like something somewhere got mixed up in the data files. This student is claiming that the Medical Center once - I kid you not - drilled a being into a suit then sent that being on his or her merry way. Clearly some sort of mix up - any way you can help sort out this snafu?

Following up on this. We examined the data mainframe and have found no outages, outstanding tickets, or other instances of miscategorized object names. Whatever data is there should be accurate. We cannot guarantee the completeness of the data as data is routinely purged. However, no data for the med center for the time frame requested was altered via categorization.
That being said, the inaccuracy of the data is evident. I will follow up with Quality Control regarding their review protocols. Whoever inputted the case information must have either combined several cases or blatantly fabricated the data.
I cannot attend Taungsday. Send my best to your wife.

Sorry to kick this back your way, but the data department didn't find any issues. Mind emailing the student in the meantime to give an update? Doesn't have to be specific, just let him know it's in processing still. It also couldn't hurt to let him know it's an error. Pardon the Twi'leki, but that poor bastard is on a wild porg chase.

I am contacting you to inform you of a delay in providing the information you requested. We are concerned that the quantity of procedures and medical devices outlined in your request may indicate a database error, and are following up with Quality Control to clarify the issue. Thank you for your follow up, it is much appreciated. I admit that the unusual procedures were what caught my attention originally. While technically possible, I can't fathom the medical circumstances that would lead to deploying those types of treatments, nor can I imagine them working in tandem. For example, based on the limited scans of the schematics I found, the face covering of this (200 lb!) support would be held in place with needles. From a biomedical perspective, it would be like developing an organic into a Chiss Army Knife.
Please keep me updated if possible.

Looped you in on the discussion with the QC team, so you'll see any updates coming through. Gotta admit, I'm curious too, especially after that last email you forwarded from the university. That's quite the kreth up, failing to flag a report that claims a being was fried alive then stuffed into a body builder suit. I guess whoever it was would save on the expense of a coffin, if nothing else?
Good luck with the root canal! Remember to request extra anesthetic if you need it. I had to complain to the 'droid last time, I could feel a slight stinging - very unprofessional.

Thank you for reaching out. Per the 400 page guide attached, Quality Control has a detailed process for reviewing all inputs of medical data, including a triple layer review that involves subject matter experts and management. Droid intelligence scans data logs for outliers and flags any outliers found for investigation. Errors are extremely rare, if not impossible. The functions of med droids include an auto log of all actions they commence, and breakdowns in this function are typically caught immediately through a failsafe mechanism wired in.
I have copied Legal on this email. Accusations of data falsification are taken seriously - as is incompetence.

Dear Pyrus,
Glad to hear from you, hope Imperial Center is treating you well.
I had a look over the list of injectable substances you sent me. The only one I recognized was a toxin derived from porg livers, which is well known for its stimulant effects. It's not a popular medication (too many side effects, most notably intense aggression) but I believe it is in the standard military medkit. Some searching turned up a draft report on another one of the substances (appears to be a tranquilizer), which I've attached for your perusal.
The rest of the list are a mystery to me. If you have samples, I would love a chance to work with them. I assume this is a hypothetical treatment plan, but if you do run a trial I'd appreciate the chance to see the results. What species of being was this list of prescriptions being considered for? Given the high dosage of porg liver toxin, I'd assume something fairly large.
Any chance you'd be willing to guest lecture later this semester? Many of our students are hoping for careers in drug development, and I think it could really benefit them to get an insider view of the regulatory process. Let me know!

Subject: Re: Neuro hardware possibilities?
Schurra-
Always glad to help an old friend out. Artificial vertebrae and spinal connectors are a pretty common piece of neuro hardware. External collars not so much, we custom manufacture 2 or 3 per year for pretty extreme cases. I don't have exact numbers from our competitors, but expect they're similarly low.
As for the vital systems monitors: again, pretty common, but for those to weigh 15kg is shockingly bad design. The heaviest unit Neurowares produces weighs 0.8kg, and we've got a whole team of engineers trying to shave that down. You did mention this was an older device, but even a decade or two ago, you'd be laughed out of the business for producing such a piece of junk.
Cable plants for the monitors, pretty common. A thick central cable is odd, though, industry standard is multiple separate cables for redundancy. Sounds like the kind of stupid mistake those guys over at NeuroLogicality would make.

Dr. Schurra,
Having reviewed the files you sent me, I would say that the procedures in question are certainly possible, though rather outdated. Microscalpel surgery to install lung and throat support is always an option we consider when assessing cases of serious lung damage. However, when lung damage occurs in combination with the level of heart damage suggested by the monitor you mentioned, we find that pulmonodes typically provide a much better outcome and require a less invasive procedure.

That's the silver lining here (legally speaking). That combination of treatments is frankly not survivable. Requiring the treatments in the first place means life-threatening injuries. To put an invalid in that suit is a medical choice that boggles the mind. Whoever that was is long dead. Better for them, poor fellow. That would be a miserable existence.

Quis:
Thanks for the introduction. Dr. Hust, welcome, and grateful to have your input on the situation. Warning, it's a weird one.
Unfortunately, we don't have any current samples on the substances. The being's identity is unknown, and as far as we can tell from the medical records, they are not currently receiving medical care from any public hospital. They'd have to - and I do mean have to - be receiving care of some sort since they're still alive, but it must be a private provider.
I've attached a list of the substances. Many are unfamiliar to me, but based on their chemical make-up they'd have side effects that include increased aggression, heart problems, and influence on midichlorians, although that's a Jedi hornet's nest that we'll leave unkicked.

Subject: Re: Re: URGENT update on rx list
Quis, Thanks for your intro. I'll keep you looped in for professional interest.
Dr. Schurra, Happy to help you wherever I can. You're right, this is an unusual list of substances, but I'll give you my best guesses. One is pretty straightforward: the Multi-Vitamin Artoo Unit Gummies are from Spostco. I buy them for my toddler, they're a great deal (23 credits for a bottle of 500) and the weirdest thing about them is the artificial jogan fruit flavor. As for the rest of the list....
Quis let me know they'd already told you about the Nitract Xmeox, which is a porg liver toxin sometimes used as a stimulant. It's fallen out of favor due to the uncontrollable aggression that's a side effect in around 73% of patients, but it was widely used during the Clone Wars to keep troops awake for as long as three standard weeks at a time. I do also recognize the Masichos Tyrannus. I actually did a rotation during grad school in the lab of the professor who first synthesized it (Nirp Grout, now sadly deceased). It showed promising effects prolonging the lifespan of cell cultures, and we were hoping we might be able to develop it toward similar applications in sentients. Unfortunately, when tested on more complex organisms, the subjects showed signs of intense distress and agony. Test subjects living in group conditions also showed extreme aggression and violence toward one another. We had to end the trials early due to this, and the research was scrapped. Because of this, I was quite surprised to see it on the list. It's unlikely that anyone not closely associated with the lab would be aware of its existence, but I struggle to believe that anyone who saw its effects firsthand would continue to pursue it.
I know you say that this patient is currently alive, but I admit I'm rather skeptical of that. I cannot imagine that a being feeling the combined effects from Nitract Xmeox and Masichos Tyrannus could possibly live in normal society. This is a combination of medications that would likely give a patient a kill count.
On that note, Quis forwarded me an unpublished study on Beastus Maximus, which appears to be a black-market tranquilizer. Due to its illicit nature, the literature on the substance is unfortunately very limited. However, I did find a documentary on illegal shaak-fighting rings that claims it's popular there. Allegedly, handlers use it to control the shaaks’ aggression toward them in between fights, and exploit the withdrawal symptoms to make the shaaks more vicious during fights. If you'd like, I can reach out to a colleague who works in veterinary medicine for more information on this.
Unfortunately, the Pyrocus Mortem is a complete mystery to me. Given the nature of the other substances on the list (toddler gummy vitamins excluded), I would imagine its effects are alarming.

Subject: Regulatory concerns
Greetings, all,
Having reviewed the list of medical devices shared by Dr. Schurra, my concerns fall into two broad regulatory categories: Patient Safety and Public Safety.
On the Patient Safety side:
- Proportions. Prosthetic limbs are subject to a series of strict sizing regulations designed to protect wearers from falls, improve balance, and prevent unnecessary strain on organic body parts. These are calculated proportional to the wearer's size. In cases where all lower limbs are prosthetics, these regulations require the prosthetic limbs to be several inches shorter than the organic limbs they are replacing. While it is not, strictly speaking, impossible that a human could still be over 7 feet tall after this legally mandated height reduction, it is highly unlikely.
- Weight. Permanent wearable vital systems monitors have strict weight limits to reduce strain on users and the organ systems being monitored. For Class C beings, a group which includes humans, the limit is 1.7kg. A 15kg monitor for a human user is blatantly illegal.
- Failsafes. Lon tells me he already pointed this out, but systems supporting limb movement, vital organ function, or vital organ monitoring are all required to have multiple points of failure. The exact number varies depending on the system (I can forward the relevant ImpRegs if you wish for more detail), but based on the specs you shared, none of the systems in question are in compliance.
On the Public Safety side, these limbs are massively overpowered. Bionic limbs are limited to 0.3 rontopower for general use. While more powerful limbs exist for specialized military and industrial applications, their use requires specialized training and a heavy machinery operator's license. In addition, such devices may only be used while actually participating in the relevant activity, and must be replaced with a standard-powered limb otherwise. While these specs do not specifically list the rontopower of the limbs in question, it's clear to me that they are far, far over the general use limit, and as far as I'm aware, stronger than any industrial limbs currently on the market. I have further concern about the grip strength of the hands, which I suspect is far over the regulatory limit as well.
I hope this information proves useful. Please let me know if you have any further questions, or if you would like to view specific relevant regulations.
Best,
Grette Jares

Greetings,
If you are receiving this email, you have recently initiated or responded to an inquiry regarding Case 028 - BB - XX2AB of the Grand Imperial Medical Facility. Please see below for an important message.
It has come to our attention that various bodies are seeking more information regarding Case 028 - BB - XX2AB. As proper to the nature of our glorious Empire, we have chosen to offer full transparency, honesty, and security. To this effort, we have copied ISB on this communication and shall continue to involve them as necessary.
Case 028 - BB - XX2AB involves the use of breaking-edge technology that broadens the Empire’s medical horizons. His royal highness, Emperor Palpatine, has an ownership interest in this particular case and chose to pursue this investment opportunity with the health, security, and order of the Empire in mind. As part of this opportunity, Emperor Palpatine graciously funded all medical expenses for the subject's original treatment and recovery in full. Regarding any consequent check-ups and maintenance, the subject was kindly made aware that Emperor Palpatine has generously established several public health grant programs for which the subject is eligible.
Due to accepting our glorious Emperor's patronage, the subject survived and now enjoys the full quality of life our glorious Emperor envisioned for him. Without the Emperor’s thoughtful intervention, the subject would not be where he is today.
We salute our Emperor for his forethought and wisdom, and the subject for submitting to it as proper to do with our Imperial Master.
We believe this settles all questions raised and do not anticipate any further inquiries.

Subject: case info?
Hi Schurra,
Long time no see! It's been a moment since med school. We'll have to grab lunch sometime to catch up. I still remember those late nights studying together! Definitely glad that's over. :-)
A little bird told me (maybe more of a flock, you know how gossip works at Imperial Med) of the details of that case you've been asking about; you likely recall, but I'm referring to the quadriplegic burn victim who has survived 20 years with a bevy of outdated medical equipment (!!).
I know it's been a while, but I'm currently the head of the psych research group here at Imperial Med, and if you have any more information regarding the patient, I would love to have it. Someone who survived extreme burns, loss of limbs, and the medical treatment itself is someone our psych group wants to know more about. That's a rare case, if I'm being frank - a once in a lifetime opportunity to dig into a psyche like that. It's hard to imagine how the mind would recover from something like those experiences. It's either a stubborn tenacity of spirit unmatched by anything I've seen before or a death wish, but either way, it would help us know more so we can help victims that survive extreme circumstances.
Do let me know!
Thanks for your time,

Subject: Meet Max
Dear Pyrus,
I hope everything is going well with you! I find that I have another introduction to make, but this time for an esteemed colleague. Our university recently founded a state of the art research lab, an effort led by Max Max Tpo. Max has spent his career studying prescription interaction, and most recently won an award bestowed by Pharma Corp for his advancements in the field. His accomplishments include discovering a treatment for bone brittleness based on his research in ronto-gland secretions, developing a vaccine for Togruta Tooka Stripes, and improving athletic performance via Chandrilian supplements.
Max requested that I connect you with him because he has some ideas regarding that case we had some back and forth over earlier. I'll leave it to Max to expound, but I'm certain he has much to offer!

Bilgeson,
Trying to draft a statement so I can send it as soon as B gives the okay, but I've got no clue what to put in it. I know the Emperor's press secretary said that they're fully committed to transparency, but the level of detail they gave us feels inappropriate to share with a random member of the public. Plus, we know the Emperor prefers to be discreet with his charitable deeds, so I have a feeling we ought to preserve the privacy of whoever he graciously provided such extensive medical care for.
Anyway, I feel really out of my depth on this. I've really appreciated your guidance and mentorship during these past seven months I've been working here, could you swing by my cubicle to guide me again and help me figure out an outline?
Thanks so much,

You don't want in on this case, trust me. It's escalated to an extent that I didn't realize was possible, all you'd be able to get is a major bureaucratic headache and no access to the patient. That said, I'd be happy to connect you with a colleague who works with burn survivors at a military hospital. Hopefully more interviews with less trouble is a bit of consolation.

I would like to report several regulatory violations for case 028 - BB - XX2AB, involving a Dr. Schurra.
- Licensing: The equipment involved in this case requires yearly registration to maintain the license in order to ensure the standard of care is being met. For this particular case, there should be 17 different licenses updated. However, no licenses exist - whoever is in charge of the patient is clearly incompetent at handling bureaucratic requirements.

Regarding: INFORMATION DISCLOSURES, CASE 028 - BB - XX2AB, GRAND IMPERIAL MEDICAL FACILITY
(00:37:28) Haricot: And when you contacted outside experts, what did they say?
(00:37:42) Schurra: In general, the sense was that many of these medical treatments were unusual, but not unheard of.
(00:37:56) Haricot: Many, but not all. Which procedures attracted particular concern?
(00:38:07) Schurra: Well, there were a host of regulatory concerns regarding biomedical devices, such as prosthetics and neurological implants. Both for the sake of patient safety and for public safety reasons.
(00:38:23) Haricot: Yes, we’ve already had a thorough overview of those. Were there any other items that caught your attention?
(00:38:40) Schurra: Ah…
(00:38:43) Haricot: Yes?
(00:38:46) Schurra: The patient was on several medications known to cause a dramatic increase in violence and aggression, as well as at least one substance that was a total unknown. In combination with the immensely overpowered prosthetics, there were concerns about the patient’s ability to live peacefully in society.
(00:39:17) Haricot: Your concerns have been noted. I wish to assure you, Doctor Schurra, that as a loyal citizen of the Empire, you need not fear for your safety.
(00:39:29) Schurra: No, of course not. We received a communication from an authority on the case that assured us of this.
(00:39:52) Haricot: Excellent. I’m glad to hear it. Now, for the record, could you please summarize the overall state of the patient?
(00:40:09) Schurra: Yes. The patient was administered the medications we just discussed, which include several that impact levels of aggression. The patient was given several prosthetics…
[Interviewee pauses and glances at Lord Vader]
(00:40:32) Haricot: Schurra?
(00:40:33) Schurra : Ah, forgive me. I thought…never mind. The patient was given several prosthetics, including for all four limbs. The patient was provided with a hermetically sealed…
[Interviewee pauses and glances at Lord Vader]
(00:40:38) Schurra: …sealed suit…that included a face covering…
(00:40:43) Haricot: Is that all?

( 00:40:50) Haricot: You’ll have to speak up for the scribe droid.
(00:40:56) Vader: Answer the question, Doctor Schurra.
(00:41:04) Schurra: Yes! Yes, that’s all. There are no other pertinent details to share. My apologies. I have been a bit scatterbrained lately. I think it may be time for me to look at retiring. I’ve been working for over forty years, you know, and I tend to forget things these days.
