Chapter 10: Gaemon

Chapter Text

Visenya is not Jaehaera, but she resembles her. If he closes his eyes, he can imagine that it's his older sister in his bed and not his niece.

Once again, the curse of the younger siblings.

He hates Daemon Targaryen, but over time, he has come to understand him. Daemon loved Viserys but couldn’t have him, so he took the next best thing… Rhaenyra.

It’s a tragic story, but one that repeats itself.

If Daemon had been a woman or if Viserys had been, everything would have been different. The cursed blood of the Arryns would not have tainted their dynasty, and the one responsible for the dance, that dry-wombed bitch, Aemma Arryn, would not have condemned the house of the dragon with a defective offspring like Rhaenyra. It was her fault for being a withered bitch incapable of giving life that grandmother Alicent was sold, used, and then discarded by pathetic men.

Yes, he understands Daemon. But he hates him as much as he relates to him.

Jaehaera and he were meant to burn together, but Jaehaera never saw it that way.

Jaehaera was first Jaehaerys’s and then Aegon III’s. Jaehaera was never Gaemon’s.

Damn destiny that made his blood burn for the one person he could never have.

At least he has Visenya.

It could be worse.

By now, his Lannister wife and his Lannister children must have found out that he ran away with his niece.

He doesn’t hate his wife; his wife is a good woman and, above all, a Lannister. He likes the Lannisters; they were loyal to his father and to the Greens. Lord Tyland was the best man he ever had the luck to know. Tyland respected him despite being a bastard.

Tyland was a good man, a man who lived in peace and lived in war. A man who reached glory in reconciliation and healing the realm. A man he admires and aspires to be one day.

After Visenya gives him back the family that was stolen from him, he will have a baby whom he will name Tyland and a girl whom he will name Alicent, and then more daughters whom he will name after his mother and mother Sylvenna.

He won’t see his son and daughters grow up with his first wife, but he knows they will be safe, and soon they will be lost in time and his memory. It’s okay. The Lannisters will outlive them all, and if the gods are kind, his blood will also run through Tywin’s veins. From him will come the end of the House of the Dragon.

Daenerys must be born, but she will be the last; with her, the cursed blood of Daemon and Rhaenyra will end. They only need her alive for a few years, to bring the dragons back and nothing more. That girl is interesting but not useful beyond fulfilling her mission.

Rhaegar’s bastard will have no offspring and will die crossing the Wall. The male line of the Targaryens will fall into oblivion.

They deserve it.

He hopes that from whatever hell Viserys is in, he sees what a prophecy really is, that he sees how his promised prince was nothing more than a tool to be used a few times and then discarded.

Visenya is not yet pregnant, despite the rumors that will soon begin to circulate. It’s true, he has taken her, but there was no other option; he couldn’t allow Jaehaera’s blood to be tainted by the cursed offspring of Viserys II. Aegon the Unworthy was Naerys’s burden.

He wouldn’t be stopped, he had done enough by saving the girls.

Daena, Rhaena, and Elena are safe, locked away under the watch of the Shepherd’s followers who survived the dance.

Just a little longer and Daemon Blackfyre will make his entrance into the world… but that will no longer be his problem.

He will have a wonderful life with Jaehaera’s daughter and his sons and daughters.

They will do the right thing and wait until they are far away and safe in Essos to marry and start having the family he and Jaehaera should have had.

Aegon did not deserve Jaehaera, the gods knew that, and that’s why their bodies and blood bore no fruit. They had to use magic to do what would have been natural with him.

Visenya is not Jaehaera, but she will be the mother of his children. They will pay the price and bring back those who left too soon.

Aegon. Helaena. Aemond. Daeron.

Jaehaerys and Maelor.

They will all return to life.

Seven lives were taken; seven lives will be returned, the soul and blood of those they lost are latent in Visenya’s womb.

The life of Daenaera Velaryon to bring back Helaena.

The life of Aemon, Daeron, and Baelor to bring back Aegon II, Aemond, and Daeron.

The life of Princesses Rhaena and Baela to bring back Jaehaerys and Maelor.

The life of the regent prince Viserys so that King Aegon III may survive.

Jaehaera, however, will return, but not in this life. Jaehaera, sweet and beautiful Jaehaera, will return when the time is right, maybe in a hundred or two hundred years, who knows? He can only pray that when Jaehaera returns, he will be by her side.

Until then, he will live to the fullest, enjoying every day and filling with love the family he lost. He is no longer Gaemon Wet-hair or Pale-hair, no longer a bastard, but the younger brother of the bravest woman the world never understood.

He will fully live the life Jaehaera has given him. Visenya is the key, and he, he is the Guardian.

At last, he will have a real family, a big family that will never leave him.

The Targaryens can keep the burden of the crown and the wounds the iron throne inflicts on them.

Him and Visenya.

He and Jaehaera’s blood will forge a new path and a new surname.

By the time Jaehaera returns, her world will be different.

“My love, sleep.”

Visenya says, still drowsy. She looks so peaceful. Maybe he doesn’t love her like he loved Jaehaera, but she’s his niece and he cares for her. Soon she will be his wife and the mother of his children.

He responds by giving her a kiss and snuggling up next to her.

She is not Jaehaera, but for now, she will be enough.

Soon their ship will cross the Stepstones, and from there, they will go to the farthest lands of Essos to start their new life with their new surname.

Greenfire.

He will be Gaemon Greenfire, the patriarch of a new world.

He will marry Visenya and start putting children in her belly.

He won’t be like Viserys, the pusillanimous and pathetic king who didn’t know how to do what was right. He will adore every child his second wife gives him.

He has chests full of books written in the Valyrian language and of valuable objects and jewels. They will lack nothing in their new life, neither money nor knowledge.

He will bring back the dragons as Jaehaera has taught him.

His sister was a dreamer like aunt Helaena.

Only Jaehaera, unlike her mother, decided not to be a silent witness, Jaehaera would not sin by omission trying to blend in and disappear.

Jaehaera has seen the past and the future in a way that Visenya never could.

He has her diaries and her letters; he knows what will happen, and if he is careful, he and his will live without altering the future too much, only as necessary.

They will create their own kingdom, and within hundreds of years, when the long night falls, they will survive.

The Targaryens have their champion, the Blackfyres too. Legitimate and bastards have their champions.

As far as he is concerned, they can destroy each other.

Daenerys and Aegon were going to die anyway.

But he and his family would survive.

Aegon III will die as he deserves: alone and knowing that his successor Aegon IV is the perfect result of a rogue prince and a whore… unworthy.

Soon, he will fill Visenya with children, so many that she will not have a single free moment to think about the life they have left behind.

His first wife will understand and will not look for him. He has left her two letters in which he explains everything. He knows his lioness will understand. One letter is for her, and the other is for Lord Lannister, a letter that must be passed down generation after generation as the best-kept secret of Casterly Rock to Lord Lannister when a new King is crowned.

Tywin Lannister, two hundred years from now, must read his words and survive.

“To you, Great Lion, my name is Gaemon Greenfire, and if everything has gone as planned, Aerys has just been crowned…”
