Chapter Text

Wednesday was not happy.

And no, not because she was currently trapped in a dumbwaiter with her roommate as they were both being attacked by a monster.

That was just adding onto her pre-existing unhappiness.

No, she was unhappy because Enid had insisted upon coming along with her despite Wednesday telling her to remain back in their dorm room, she’d began with excused and lying about where she was heading that evening, not wanting Enid to come along given the uncertainty of the situation as well as what happened to Eugene.

He’d been hurt helping her. The only person in this school beside Enid whom Wednesday would admit to tolerating, even going so far as to say liking their presence.

And Wednesday deemed that one person too many to have been hurt due to her actions, no if she was going to continue her investigation she would do it alone.

But Enid had seen through her deception easily, having thrown all manner of questions at Wednesday about where she was going, what she was doing and when she’d been back, cutting through her usually iron clad verbal defenses like they’d been made of tissue paper. Every explanation Wednesday offered and turned to, Enid had broken down till Wednesday had admitted the truth.

And that’s when Enid did the exact thing Wednesday hoped she wouldn’t, and said she was coming with her.

Now it was Wednesday who had launched into a verbal onslaught, offering excuses and reasons why Enid should remain behind, in the end all but demanding she not come. But Enid had been steadfast in her desire, saying Wednesday was not going alone and she wasn’t going to sit aside while she went into potentially dangerous territory.

The action had made Wednesday both incredibly frustrated but also spread warmth through her chest, butterflies once again seemingly swirling in her stomach like they were caught in a tornado as Wednesday found Enid’s stubborn and firm demeanor in regards to coming with her endearing in ways she couldn’t fully express.

Enid wanted to be around her, despite knowing the risks, threatening to tell Weems if Wednesday even dared sneak out without her, as well as saying she’d just go out anyway in an attempt to track her down.

(flashback)

“And then how would you feel if I went out alone after you, huh?” Enid continued.

“Me out there, all alone, I could just as easily be in danger from whatever monster this is than if I was with you. At least then we’d be together, there’s safety in numbers after all.” Enid said before crossing her arms.

“You’re crazy if you think I’m letting you go alone, and for the last time this isn’t up for debate, if you’re going then I’m going.” Enid declared firmly, her eyes holding a steel to them that most often couldn’t see, underestimating the young wolf that, whom Wednesday knew had far more skills and strength hidden beneath the surface than most believed.

And Wednesday knew deep down that nothing she could say or do was going to stop Enid from accompanying her tonight.

“...Ok.”

“....Wait, what?” Enid replied, her eyes widening suddenly as Wednesday didn’t reply with another excuse or argument.

“I said Ok.” Wednesday repeated. “You’ve made your point exceedingly clear…I still wish you would let me handle this alone, but I also see there’s no point in continuing this argument when we could be on our way to the Gates house.”

Enid let out a quick squeal, the serious look on her face giving way to a grin as she went to hug Wednesday before pulling back and nodding, the serious look coming over her face more but with a smile as she went back to her side of the room and began to grab her sweater and other supplies.

Again Wednesday cursed her past self for making Enid feel so averse to offering physical affection, as by the time Wednesday had begun to crave it and wish for it, Enid had reluctantly abided by her wishes.

Wednesday didn’t know how to even begin to rectify that mistake, or how to approach it without making a fool out of herself.

Enid was ready in a few minutes, Wednesday having instructed her on a few essentials, including a flashlight and a notebook and pen just in case they needed to take notes, she too had these things but it was still good to have two of everything.

Wednesday was about to meet Enid at the door to their dorm before she stopped, turning back and instantly making her way back to her side of the room.

Enid was confused until her eyes widened when Wednesday returned, wearing the snood once again as she fixed it above her head.

Seeing the smile on Enid’s face grow even larger, which at this point seemed impossible, Wednesday could only mutter out a response.

“Our first proper joint investigation also qualifies as a special occasion.”

“So you’d say it’s ‘Snood Worthy’ then.” Enid replied back, nudging Wednesday’s arm.

She got a blank look in response.

(Flashback End)

Thinking quickly, Wednesday took off her Snood and wrapped it around the handle of the dumbwaiter.

“Not the snood!” Enid whispered loudly, causing Wednesday to turn instantly and give her a look.

“Enid! It can be replaced.” ‘Unlike you…’ she added in her mind before Enid let out a high pitched cry as the creature’s claws began slashing through the dumbwaiter’s door, revealing its bug eyed and snarling form.

Wednesday found herself grabbed and pulled back as her eyes widened, realizing Enid had wrapped her arms around her and pulled her back, pressing her back into her chest as the creature continued to snarl at them.

Before Wednesday could think of a way out, the two girls suddenly looked up at a sudden sound that filled the dumbwaiter.

And upon doing so Wednesday’s expression dropped from alarmed to incredulous as the sound was coming from the rope to the dumbwaiter just before it snapped.

Wednesday let out a low groan similar to Enid as they stumbled up from the hard ground, the impact had not been gentle after the dumbwaiter had crashed and sent both of them sprawling out onto the basement floor.

Enid was the first to recover, the wolf coming over and helping Wednesday up off the ground before frantically beginning to look around.

They could both hear the creature upstairs continuing its search for them.

“We have to get out of here!” Enid exclaimed, still trying to keep her voice down as she looked around the room. Wednesday however was fascinated by the trappings she found upon turning on the light.

Jars and bottles of various shapes and sizes filled the basement, all containing an assortment of body parts.

Body parts that matched the ones belonging to the victims that had turned up in Wednesday’s investigation.

“Enid, these are-” Wednesday began before the upstairs door was broken down, the creature’s snarls becoming louder as Wednesday suddenly found herself grabbed and pulled over towards a window to the outside.

“Less talking! More running!” Enid said as she pushed the window open and with a heave, hoisted Wednesday up off the ground.

The act momentarily distracted Wednesday from the threat of the bloodthirsty creature on their tail as she was lifted up off the ground with such ease in Enid’s deceptively strong arms and pushed up and out into the lawn.

Rolling to a stop, Wednesday quickly turned back to see Enid scrambling out and got to her feet, running over and grabbing hold of her arms and heaving her up. However things didn’t go as smoothly as Wednesday was suddenly hoisted back down towards the window as Enid let out a scream.

“It’s got me!” Enid cried out, as she suddenly found herself in a losing battle of tug-of-war where she was the rope, as Wednesday dug her feet into the ground which did little to stop Enid’s descent, the wolf girl kicking and thrashing as she did.

One of her kicks must have made contact in a sensitive spot as they were able to gain a momentary advantage and yank Enid further out, allowing Wednesday an opportunity.

“Let her go!”

Enid didn’t know where Wednesday had pulled the particular knife she’d produced, but it didn’t matter in the moment as Wednesday slashed harshly at the monster's hand that gripped her leg, causing it to let out a louder cry of pain as it released Enid’s leg, sending both girls stumbling back and onto the grass.

For several seconds there was nothing but the sounds of their panting breaths that filled the air, both of them staring up at the night sky. It was almost a peaceful moment, if not for the fact they’d been running for their lives moments beforehand.

“How are we going to get back…” Enid said as she rolled onto her side, pushing herself up as Wednesday began to do the same. “Tyler was our ride and…I mean, I’m not saying he’s not alive, or that we shouldn’t check or call the cops but…What are the chances he’s…well…you know..” Enid began awkwardly as she glanced quickly back between Wednesday and the house.

“Dead? I’d say the chances are high. And even if he was injured he wouldn’t be able to provide adequate transportation in our current predicament.” Wednesday said, suppressing a groan as she gripped her knee.

Landing on the basement floor hadn’t been kind and she’d hit her knee rather harshly, hindering her movement now as the adrenaline began to wear off in her system and the pain flared up.

Both of their heads whipped back around to the house as they heard the creature’s muffled cries and stomping feet as it traversed through the house.

“Screw this!” Enid exclaimed before Wednesday saw her reach for her watch and curiously flipped open the top of it, revealing a button similar to the insignia on her mother’s suit before pressing it.

“An emergency alert beacon?” Wednesday wondered out loud.

“Yeah, I can use it to summon my Mom if I’m in trouble or need her.”

“You’re telling me you could summon Supergirl whenever you wanted.”

“Yeah, but I only use it for like, big emergencies.” Enid shot back.

“What about Eugene?”

“Ok to be fair, we only found out about that after he’d been attacked. Unlike you, I’m not psychic Wednesday.” Enid shot back before her eyes darted back to the house.

“It’s not going to stay there for long!” She said, her wolf hearing picking up minute sounds even Wednesday’s keen hearing could not begin to detect.

“We gotta go, now!” Enid said before noticing Wednesday leaning funny and glanced down at her knee where Wednesday’s hand clutched at it.

“Your leg…Come here.” Enid said as she moved closer to her, startling Wednesday slightly.

“Look I know your whole aversion to physical touching thing and I respect your boundaries, but right now I think saving your life takes priority and you can threaten to disembowel me one hundred different ways later.” Enid declared before scooping Wednesday up in her arms, again displaying greater strength due to her werewolf physiology, even non shifted she was holding Wednesday easily in her arms as she began to move.

Wednesday didn’t offer protest as she stared up at Enid with widened eyes as she carried her across the lawn.

Just as they began to make headway however, the creature jumped out at them after escaping the house and let out an almost roar like bellow, causing Enid to stumble back and trip before both girls found themselves once again on the ground as the creature approached.

Wednesday noticed its wide eyed gaze shifting between them, ready to lay into it with all the blades and weapons she had concealed on her person if it even thought of going near Enid, though its eyes were locked on her as was its pace.

What she didn’t expect however was what happened next as in a flurry of pink and blonde, Enid leapt up off the ground and tackled into the creature, sending it back a few steps as she unsheathed her claws and began slicing and stabbing into the monster with a feral abandon that Wednesday had only ever seen glimpses of, the inner strength and fire that she knew Enid had within herself that first came out the first day they’d met when Enid threatened Wednesday with those brightly colored claws that had enamored her from the moment she laid eyes on them.

The very same claws that were now sinking into and slashing at the beast before them as Enid let out a string of aggressive snarling growls in between words.

“Leave her alone!” she exclaimed with a growl as the creature screamed out as Enid slashed near its face, her body half latched onto its arm with her claws as her legs took purchase on its back as she continued to slash and cut into it.

Wednesday couldn’t take her eyes off the magnificent sight. All concern and worries momentarily fled her mind as she couldn’t take her gaze away from the violent and primal display Enid was dishing out.

And she was doing it for her

However all good things seemingly must come to an end as Wednesday saw the creature lash out, knocking Enid down and back to the ground, the wolf finding her footing just in time for the monsters claws to come slashing down upon her, catching on her face and chest and sending her back down to the ground with a cry.

And in that moment Wednesday felt her heart stop.

“ENID!”

Wednesday’s gaze was once again locked onto Enid, though only concern and dread were evoked as she saw the blonde lying face down in the grass.

All the fears and potential scenarios that had run through her head in regards to keeping Enid away from her investigation came back to the forefront of her mind. She hadn’t needed her psychic powers to foresee potential dangers that could befall Enid, her mind had done a good enough job conjuring those on its own.

And Enid being hurt like this had been a mental image she’d hoped she’d never see laid out before her in reality.

The beast turned back to her, snarling as it looked her up and down like a piece of meat and advanced towards her. Wednesday’s view of Enid became blocked as the object of her ire flexed its claws, her heart ached for Enid but it also began to fill with contempt and rage at the creature before her.

Hurting Eugene had earned its death.

Hurting Enid however, had earned its suffering.

She didn’t care how much pain her leg was in, or how physically outmatched she was, it wouldn’t stop her from using every last ounce of strength in her body to inflict as much pain she physically could upon this monster.

Even if it was with her dying breath, she was going to make it pay.

“Well, what are you waiting for!” Wednesday goaded, retrieving two blades from within her clothing, a thicker serrated knife in her left hand and a thinner blade in her right as she glared at the creature, it lunged forward only for Wednesday to lash out with her left, managing to slash deeper into one of the many bloodied cuts Enid had left upon it.

Wednesday felt pride at seeing those injuries, proud of Enid’s accomplishments over the larger foe.

Managing to get in a few more hits before her leg protested once again, the momentary distraction all it took for the monster to pushed her back off her feet and onto the ground, holding her right hand down painfully at the wrist as she tried to stab it in the other arm only for her blade to be knocked from her hand and it’s own clawed grip came down around her throat.

Wednesday in this moment longed for the expression ‘if looks could kill’ to have some semblance in reality, as she was leveling it with a defiant and angered glare that would have wiped the creature from existence a million fold in that moment.

As Wednesday felt her vision begin to darken, the night sky beginning to blend in with her spotty vision as her windpipe was forced shut, she fought desperately against the sensation and tried to remain conscious.

She had to…

…For Enid.

As if on cue, she saw familiar rainbow colored claws wrap around the creature’s midsection and in a move that reminded her of greco-roman wrestling she saw the creature be heaved up off the ground from behind and heard it’s confused growl combined with a louder, more strained cry as she heard Enid exert herself more than she’d ever heard, or seen as the creature was suplexed back and into the ground.

Wednesday found herself staring for what seemed like the thousandth time that night at her roommate as Enid stood there panting and clutching her stomach, bloody slashes visible on her previously unmarked skin, blood dripping and pooling from her face and stomach as her clothing was blotted and darkened.

“...Enid.” Wednesday uttered as Enid was at her side in a second, moving to pick Wednesday up again, but before Wednesday could protest in regards to Enid’s injuries, a louder roar from behind them caused both their heads to whip around to the creature as it had gotten up again, it’s claws raised and glinted in the moonlight before coming down.

Wednesday didn’t see what happened, her vision blocked out as Enid wrapped her arms around her, forming a protective cocoon with her own body as Wednesday felt the impact of the claws into Enid’s back, the pained cry that reverberated out from her wounded form as claws sliced through flesh absorbed into Wednesday as they fell back to the ground.

Enid let out one last weak cry before Wednesday felt her body go still.

“Enid…Enid!” Wednesday exclaimed, her voice muffled by Enid’s body as she gripped hold of her, the only comfort she had was the weak but noticeable feeling of the blonde’s breathing.

‘She’s still breathing.’ Wednesday repeated in her head as she heard the now familiar growl of the creature.

Wednesday wasn’t going to let it touch Enid, not again, not after she’d taken so much pain and punishment for her. She prepared herself, ready to turn Enid away from harm's way and shield her this time when the monster was suddenly blown back across the yard.

A sudden gust of wind blew Wednesday’s hair forward as she saw the person responsible for the attack.

Floating down to the ground, Supergirl now stood in front of the two downed girls.

Though this was different, the stance was still, cold and unwavering. Completely different to the warm, relaxed and welcoming body language Wednesday had observed from the woman before, the traits she’d seen that had her questioning if despite everything she’d learned about Enid’s adoption, that the Kryptonian was somehow biologically related to her.

But right now, the woman who stood behind her with her back facing Wednesday seemed like a completely different person, even her dark red cape flapped in the wind in a way that could only be described as ominous.

Wednesday peered across the yard, all the while still holding onto Enid firmly in her grasp, and saw the creature weakly standing up, the blow from Supergirl having caused it obvious internal injury.

Turning its attention to its new foe, Wednesday saw it seemingly compose itself before letting out a roar and preparing for another attack.

Only for a sudden and almost instantaneous red beam to unleash from Supergirl, and even without seeing the source, Wednesday knew this was coming from her eyes. The creature let out a loud shriek as the beam did its job, cutting through its flesh and bone like a hot knife through butter as it screamed out in pain.

Wednesday saw the beam cut off just as the monster’s left arm fell to the ground, completely disconnected from its owner as its cries grew less and less after a few moments before it fell back on the ground, lying on its back and showing no signs of getting back up.

Not even a second passed before Supergirl turned back to her, Wednesday saw her silhouette alight by the red glowing off her eyes making her look like a vengeful inhuman thing, reminding Wednesday of just how powerful the being before her was, truly one of the strongest people on the planet and beyond.

A chill ran up her spine at the sight of her moving closer to them, an act Wednesday would attempt to suppress and would deny if asked, but there was a brief momentary feeling of fear that she felt, her biological flight or fight response betraying her normally disciplined mind and body in that moment.

“Enid!”

And in an instant, the threatening and powerful demeanor was gone and replaced with a concerned and loving mother who was at her daughter’s side, the red completely gone from her eyes as Wednesday saw only blue orbs lit by moonlight and tears as she looked over Enid’s form, no doubt inspecting her injuries with greater detail.

“Give her to me.” Kara said as she kneeled down beside them.

Wednesday gently maneuvered Enid into Kara’s arms as best she could, before Kara turned to her.

“Get on my back.”

“Excuse me?”

“I don’t have time to argue about this, I need to hold Enid in both hands and I’m not leaving you here. Get on my back and wrap your arms around my neck and hold on tight. Enid needs medical attention, now let’s go!” Kara said, her voice turning from frantic to firm in a second as Wednesday couldn’t find the desire or strength to argue, standing up with a wince, clutching her still hurt knee as she moved to climb onto the older woman’s back, however before she did her eyes widened at the sight of the monster.

Or more accurately, who the monster began to transform back into.

Wednesday saw the creature’s form become more and more human, until lying there on the grass and covered in cuts, slashes, bruises and now missing an arm courtesy of Supergirl, was Tyler.

Tyler Galpin was the monster…

Wednesday’s mind flashed through everything about the Barista since the first day she’d met him. So many questions raised in her mind, far more than what had been answered by this revelation, for every one answered several now took their place.

But right now, as she wrapped her arms around Supergirl who began flying up into the air with Enid tucked protectively and safe in her arms, Wednesday had greater things to worry about.

Notes:

I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, I really had fun writing it.

Mama Bear Kara showing up at the end was always planned, though the confrontation with Wednesday, Enid and The Hyde went through a few variations as I planned and wrote out the scene.

I'm happy with it how it is.

I loved writing Protective Enid, there's going to be more of that coming soon.
