Chapter Text
The concrete was cool beneath his feet, the crickets chirped from the bushes, the tree branches swayed in the autumn breeze.
Lucky yawned as he made the transition from concrete to wet-dewy grass. The moonlight lit his surroundings.
He was exhausted, the day was long and overall just a lot. A bunch of puppies were displaced and on top of finding them homes, some other shelters called and had them re-home more puppies. So after about 50 rehomes, 2 exploded FKDs, 2 members of the pound puppies getting into a fight and more, all he wanted was to sleep.
But he didn't feel comfortable sleeping at the pound. It used to be fine. Just him and the cold nippy weather. It was fine though, he was a dog for Pete's sake. It wasn't anything he couldn't handle. And the small ping of loneliness was easy to ignore too.
But now he didn't have too. Now, no matter how exhausted he was, he would always make his way back to the warm bed that Dot insisted they shared.
He didn't deserve her. He loved her more than anything. He didn't think he would ever be able to find his person let alone have time for one. He couldn't be more grateful that his friends forced him to give her a chance.
He felt so loved here. His life was at its peak. He didn't deserve the way she incremented him into everything she did. Creating drawings of him, talking about him to her friends, always making her parents grab something that she thought he would like from the store, and so much more.
The window was left open, so he quietly hopped through it and onto the ground. It didn't wake her so he stretched and yawned once more. It took a second for his eyes to adjust to the room, but once they did, he immediately made his way over to the small lump on a pink sparkly themed bed.
He crawled up, careful not to disturb the sleeping girl. She was already scooted over from habit so he crawled up closer to her and huffed as he nuzzled into her shoulder, already dozing off.
His ears perked up as she moved a bit, placing an unusually soft kiss on the top of his head before using her arm to scratch at the spot right after.
She adjusted her arm and rolled over, now cuddling Lucky, her arms wrapped around him the best she could before looking up at him.
"I love you, goodnight Mr. Chewy McFluffster." She said drowsily before laying her head back on her pillow.
She was such an amazing and creative spirit. Like who can say their human came up with a name like Mr. Chewy McFluffster?
It took a while to get used to that name, he didn't know how to feel about it at first. But personally, he wouldn't have her call him any other way.
He licked her face gently before he nuzzled his head softly into her neck to get more comfortable. They both fell asleep easier that night. The comfort of knowing that both of them were safe and right here. It was warm and cozy.
Lucky would do anything for Dot, even risk his life to protect his person, and Dot says a lot of things, but a fact is that she would do the same thing for her best friend, her dog.

Notes:
This chapter isnt greatly written and feels pretty rushed. I'm sorry, I'll fix it another day depending on how noticed this fic gets. Also im sure it's a bit OOC but to be fair, they didn't give them enough screen time together 😔 (here's the reference for the dress and heels: https://pin.it/5RWfmr2Ag (dress) https://pin.it/3Jo2nHCf8 (heels) )
Chapter Text
Everyone's been running around for weeks, it always gets busy around this time of year. Homecoming and proms were around the corner and everyone wanted their cute little puppy to take photos with and enjoy the time with.
Lucky knew about homecoming, but when the day came that it was Dots turn to go to the few-in-a-lifetime-dance, he was getting jittery. Dot had this dance 3 more times but Lucky was going to cherish every one.
He ran out of the secret entrance, saying goodbye to the group. Ever since Mr. Henderson got that promotion, they had been living right behind the pound. It was a life saver.
He ran in through the back door and up the stairs, pushing open their bedroom door. Dot had been getting ready all day. Her hair was down, she was wearing some light makeup, her mom had helped her with it all. The girl blinked, trying to get used to the eyeliner on her waterline. When the two saw Lucky, Dot smiled brightly.
"Hi Mr. Chewy McFluffster!" She giddied. Lucky barked in response. Dot had gotten up from her bedroom vanity. Her parents had gotten her one a couple months ago even though Dot didn't wear makeup. They figured she would grow into it and it was "Every girls right." Dot had thought it was silly, but that vanity had come in handy more times than she could count.
She walked over to her bed, grabbing the black garment bag by the hanger and practically skipped over to her personal bathroom. Her mom had walked out of the room as she did so, going to grab her camera.
"Stay here Mr. Chewy McFluffster! It's gonna be a surprise!" She said enthusiastically, closing the door behind her.
Lucky waited as patiently as he could by her door, hearing the small grunts of her struggles.
It took a few minutes, Mrs. Henderson had already come back, waiting for her door to open as she held the camera.
Lucky's jaw dropped as she opened the door. Her purple glasses replaced with contacts, she wore a short puffy pink dress, longer in the back. Mesh gloves on her hands. A satin choker around her neck. She smiled and twirled, showing off the bow on the back of the dress as her mom took pictures. Her usually crazy hair was straighted and shined. It had grown longer over the years, going down to the middle of her shoulder blades.
Lucky looked her up and down, catching the sight of her white high heeled shoes. A few years ago, she wouldn't have been caught dead in something like this. In fact, Lucky fully expects her to come home with her dress stained. But the fact that she's grown, became taller, a tad more mature, makes Lucky's already watery eyes almost turn to a waterfall.
Her smile became wobbly as her mom left the room. All Lucky could get out was a small "wow."
"What do you think? Do you like it? I had mom help me pick it out. I'm not very good at dress picking." She shied. She was usually always confident, the most courageous girl he's ever known. The mutt took pride in knowing exactly when she needed him. Lucky shook out of his stupor before he spoke. "You look beautiful Dot, I'd argue that you'll be the most gorgeous girl in the room." He said, encouraging her.
"Really?" She huffed a laugh. "Are you sure? I feel like a loofa" she giggled a bit uncomfortably. As she's grown, the insecurities of a teenage girl came with it. She obviously had more on her mind, but she never felt comfortable sharing her slightly dysphoric thoughts out loud.
"Dot, that dress looks beautiful on you and you look just fine. I'm saying that from the bottom of my heart and I'm more than sure everyone would agree." He comforted and smiled warmly.
Her wobbly smile became more confident, chubby cheeks tightening as she let out a small giggle while hugging him tightly. "Thank you Mr. Chewy McFluffster. I don't know what I'd do without you. I love you" She sighed. "Of course kid, anytime. I love you too." He said, nuzzling into her neck, careful of disturbing her makeup.
Dot let go as her mom and dad walked into the room. They praised her for a few more minutes before they all headed outside to wait for her friends and to take pictures.
The sun set into a warm orange with some purple and bright pink as her friends-moms van rolled up. After they all took a few more pictures, (Lucky included), they said their goodbyes. Dot hugged Lucky and her parents before waving goodbye one last time. The van door shut and they rolled off, going to enjoy a special night of their lives.
If Lucky was crying, that was his business. Even after she came back a few days later from her sleepover with a red punch stained dress in the garment bag. Even after he took a copy of one of the Polaroid pictures of her and him and placed it on the dirt wall that was the pound puppy shelter 17 head courters.
That was his business whether he cried over her growing up or not.
