Chapter Text
Dick Grayson was in love with an idiot. He had accepted this a long time ago. Wally was a trouble magnet, ran in head first without thinking things through or communicating, and in general caused chaos in most situations. But Dick still loved the man. He knew realistically Wally did actually think most things through, his brain was just too fast for most people to keep up with.
A mission with the JLA in Gotham wasn’t unheard of, but was cause for worry. So Nightwing was always on alert when these missions occurred. They had a tendency to get out of hand and usually ended up needing backup. This meant though that as soon as it came across the comms that Flash was taken? Nightwing was swooping down onto the scene next to where Batman stood.
The alleyway was thin and dark like most of them in Gotham. Batman was crouched over a long thin needle, inspecting it and what used to be inside.
“Who has it?”
Batman grunted, putting a leftover drop from the syringe onto an analyzer built into his gauntlet. “New rogue. Hasn’t named himself. Has ties to alien technology and chemicals. This is the same he used on Green Lantern a week ago, but stronger.”
“Strong enough to knock out a Flash?” Strong enough to knock out MY Flash?
“Strong enough to disorient one at the very least, most likely enough to put one out of commission. Looks to be a combination of alien bio-chemical warfare compounds.”
Nightwing pulled up his own communicator, logging into the holographic screen. “We have tracking and statistical data built into the suits feeding directly to our computer systems. I should have his location and biometrics any second.” Batman stood as the data Fed into Nightwing’s servers. The location wasn’t far, only about 10 miles away closer to the docks in the industrial area. The biometric readings were….not good. Dick felt his heart beating so fast it could have passed for one of a speedster.
Nightwing and Batman didn’t hesitate to move, the rest of the league members on mission joining in on the way. It was under 10 minutes to the location, 30 since his abduction, but for someone like Wally? Dick knew that could feel like a lifetime. His biometrics had shown a lot of concerning readings and it was clear that Flash would be drugged at minimum, tortured at worst. It still wouldn’t be the worst situation they had all been in, but it was still pretty damn bad.
Nightwing’s only thought was that he could not lose his partner. Not to Gotham. Not to anyone.
He knew Wally was capable, more capable than anyone usually thought. But after everything that happened recently, everything with Wally’s heart and pacemaker, changing the past, reforming the Titans, joining the Justice League, handling the situation between Linda and her falling in love with him again despite not remembering him, Dick and Wally getting together (with Linda in the know of course because Wally has more than enough love for two people), these past few years had been a fucking rollercoaster for Wally West. Dick and Wally had been through hell and back and it had been hard, but they managed. If they managed all that then of course they can manage one rando from the Bowery with some fancy poison.
There were sentries outside but they clearly hadn’t prepared for the addition of an angry Nightwing and were down swiftly. The device set to spread the toxin through the atmosphere was easily disabled by Batman while Nightwing, GL, and Wonder Woman took out the threats. Wally was in the next room, but this had to be handled first.
Nightwing was relieved for the fight to be over, for the last body to drop. He sprinted to the door, hacking his way past the digital lock easily. Opening the door his heart nearly stopped.
Wally had his thighs, those thick gorgeous beautiful damn thighs, wrapped around the fuckers neck squeezing the life out of the man. His smile was bloodied and- god this is NOT the time to be turned on Nightwing. Get it together.
As the man dropped and Wally sagged, Nightwing rushed over to catch the red head before he could strain his arms further. Immediately he was in damage control mode. Wally’s arms were clearly oddly angled, dislocated more than likely from hanging. He had a large gash above his right eye bleeding heartily down his face, his nose broken and bleeding. There were some spots on his costume that were darker red than they should be, clearly indicating blood. The toxin must have effected his healing factor.
There was an empty needle stuck directly into Wally’s chest. Right through the emblem. Angled into his heart.
“Hey guys, what took you so long?”
Wally looked at Nightwing’s face before looking down at the needle.
“Awe man I don’ wanna have another heart attack-”
Nightwing frantically tried to keep Wally awake to no avail. He was out, and Nightwing was terrified.
Batman took over quickly. Everything moved too fast for Dick to process. He followed the orders, he did as told, but he didn’t need to be in charge now. All he had to do was Worry about Wally. He barely recognized when they were all boom tubed to the Watchtower. Barely realized how quickly they had moved past the talk of Wally’s heart.
It had stopped. Wally didn’t have a heartbeat.
Diana was the one who had ushered him out of the Med bay and snapped him back to reality.
“Nightwing, They will handle it. Flash will be alright. I need you to look at me, you might be in shock. Can you look at me?” Her hand touched his cheek, attempting to ground him to the moment. It took a minute, but finally he blinked and nodded.
“Yeah, I uh- I’m here.” He swallowed thickly, mouth dry suddenly. He couldn’t lose Wally.
“You need to contact his family. I am not sure who Flash is in relation with, past the former Flash. While Batman handles that, I need you to contact and let his people know the issue. Do you understand? Wally will be ok, but they need to know.” Her voice was serious, the voice of a Warrior princess directing troops. He nodded again.
“I’m his family. I- I’ll contact the others. His wife and Flash- I’ll get them.”
If Diana looked shocked at Wally having a Wife she didn’t show it. Sitting down in the common room the first person he contacted Was Linda. When she received the call she already knew something must have happened.
“Is he alive?” Her voice was worried, terrified even despite her normally strong demeanor. Nightwing’s voice came off numb, he couldn’t help it.
“He got hurt pretty badly, injected with a drug on top of things. They’re working on him now. I’m going to have Barry come pick you up and bring you to the Watchtower. Okay?”
“Okay. I’m at the station, I’ll let my boss know I’m leaving and wait outside.” The call ended without a goodbye, the situation too serious for it. While they shared Wally, he and Linda weren’t that close to each other. The next call was to Barry Allen, The former Flash now multiverse tracker. The conversation went the exact same, only this time ending in reassurance.
“He is a strong kid. Wally will be ok. I’ll be up there in a few minutes, just sit tight ok?”
When Barry arrives with Linda and Iris, Barry out of costume and both women in work attire, Nightwing couldn’t help but sag in relief. He was immediately enveloped in hugs from his extended family.
It wasn’t long before the Titans showed up too, before Oman, Arsenal, Tempest, Donna, and even Conner showed. They all waited for hours, the only word about the situation coming from Conner and his advanced hearing. It was enough to tell Wally was alive in the brief moments of the door opening and closing, the room itself soundproof. It was 4 hours later when Batman came out to approach the group of people in the common room.
“He is alright. We were able to stabilize his heart. His healing is starting to kick in after we were able to flush the toxins out of his bloodstream. He had a punctured lung, concussion, 4 broken ribs, dislocated arms, and problems with his pacemaker which has now been replaced. He will be on bedrest for two days, light dirty for two weeks.”
The collective sigh was audible.
When Wally woke up a few hours later, his best friend and Boyfriend on a chair in the corner while his Wife’s hand was brushing through his hair, all he could ask was one thing.
“Am i in heaven?”
