Chapter 1: Black Square on the Farm
Chapter Text
It was a normal day. The sun was shining, the wind was blowing through the corn stalks… everything seemed peaceful.
The twins stood out in the field, admiring the cool autumn breeze on their cheeks. Then it happened, a void just beyond the farm forming in the shape of a square. A flat square, weird. Was that a rectangle?
Almost… like a television screen. They had never seen anything like it before, but considering what they had already faced as the Superboys and even before that, this wasn’t that weird. Strange, sure. But not weird.
The two looked over then back to each other. Then, without a word, Jordan pointed over to it and followed with a thumbs up; asking if they wanted to figure out what it was.
Jon nodded, and the two quickly floated over to the very edge of the Kent Farm’s property. The… square didn’t look dangerous to the two of them.
Jon picked up a stick and chucked it at it, bouncing off as impact was made.
What the hell was this thing? It was just floating there. Being all menacing and shit.
Jordan didn’t like it. He tried to blast it with his laser vision, but that just reflected off and almost hit Jon.
He angrily looked at him and threw his hands up in a ‘what the hell man???’ way.
Jordan looked apologetically at him.
So lasers didn’t work…
So they tried ice breath— nothing.
Flying up and tapping the screen-like void— nothing aside for the tingly feeling when contact was made.
Jon whispered to his brother when he flew down after touching it. It had that feeling similar to touching an old TV, static electricity tickling fingertips.
Ohhh. A television screen.
Alien?
Luthor?
Jordan shook his head. It couldn’t have been Luthor. He was in jail, and Amanda stepped down. It couldn’t be the guy that hacked Natalie’s suit either, whatever-his-name.
Was it a weapon? It just showed up, why would it just show up?
Unless it had some sort of malicious intent behind it? But why?
If only they had Grandpa. He could make sure that the DoD could figure it out. Damn it!
The screen made a low, buzzing noise. Whatever this was, it was turning on.
It was going to attack!
A little while later, the buzzing stopped. The boys, tuckered out and bored, noticed this lack of sound immediately, perking up like two meerkats.
Why did it stop? Who knows. Maybe they would just have to keep waiting.
But they didn’t. The- the screen was turning on! The two got ready, preparing for a potential fight to happen when suddenly Jordan fell back stumbling.
Jon gasped silently as he watched his brother fall over, stifling a laugh. Then he was nudged, stepping back.
What the hell?
Friend or foe?

The screen stayed there. The boys on the ground, Jon rubbing his head as he watched Jordan. The screen flickered on finally, and the two looked up to see a solid white background.
What the hell?
Jordan got onto his feet, bracing in case the now-white void was going to bonk him on the head again. But it didn’t happen.
Jon got up too, watching the void lower down to the ground. It contorted into a shape similar to a person. Was it sentient?
The boys looked at each other again, and then to the humanoid figure made of bright energy. Well, whatever it was it didn’t seem harmful, so they shrugged and led it back to the farm. It probably had the ability to seriously hurt both of them, so it was better to not tempt fate or aggravate it to the point of justifiable violence.
The autumn breeze blew again, and slightly messed up the twins’ curls. The bright figure did not have hair to mess up… point for bright thing they guessed.
After a while, they walked into the house. It wasn’t sure if it could come in, so it waited. Sitting on the porch stair, it gazed out. Or at least that’s what Jon thought it did. He wasn’t sure, it didn’t have eyes. Not that he cared.
Jon tapped it on the shoulder, motioning that it was okay to come into the house. It got nervous, but nodded slightly, following his lead as the boy got up and walked in.
The figure looked around, almost like it knew this house somehow. It pointed left, and then pointed right. Then it directed it’s head up, towards the ceiling.
Why was it looking at the ceiling?
Jordan gave Jon a confused look to which he responded with a shrug.
Okay. Sure. Why don’t you let it into the house where it could kill all of us.
He sighed, to which the figure turned its head slightly. Jordan rolled his eyes and waved his hand dismissively.
Then it was gone.
Then it reappeared towards the kitchen.
Whatever it was, it could teleport. Both twins made mental notes about that.
Jon was more excited about it than Jordan, which was pretty usual. Jon would be the type to bring a total stranger into the house if they were friendly enough to him.
He ran over to get a piece of paper and some tape, grabbing a sharpie.
He wrote the word ‘Twinkle’ and then slapped it onto the figure, attaching the tape onto it to make sure the makeshift name tag would stick.
Jordan nodded approvingly, and then looked at the name tag.
Jon did you name it Twinkle like ‘twinkle twinkle little star’?
He facepalmed and then laughed lightly.
Of course he did.
Jon looked so proud of himself, his signature smirk plastered onto his face and his hands on his hips like he’d done the best thing ever.
Maybe they’d be okay with it as a friend.
