Chapter 1: Reunion
Chapter Text
Pale white sands as far as the eye could see. An ever-present crescent moon hung in an eternally dark, starless sky, never moving. Cold winds that could cut through your body worse than a sword, stealing all your warmth, kicking up into sandstorms, causing the soft pale sand to bite into the flesh. Trees and rocks that littered the landscape, both rare and a welcome sight – a refuge to those who could reach them.
Shinji has dreamed of the sands of Hueco Mundo often since he was an eighty-year-old tyke. He remembered his trip there, often most vividly in his dreams, years later. But, what – or who – he remembered even more than the biting cold and vast emptiness was HIM.
Shinji remembered him; dreamed of him often. He vaguely remembered him telling Shinji his name, the last time he’d ever seen him. White. White was an unusual Hollow – one that not only refused to eat Shinji, but took care of him and kept him from starving (somehow, Shinji could never figure out how).
At first, when he returned to Soul Society, he swore everything had been real. The adults didn’t believe him (he couldn’t blame them), but they’d placated him. ‘Oh, what a nice Hollow,’ or ‘Wow, that really happened? Amazing,’ or even, ‘Haha, you had quite the adventure, didn’t you?’ But, as he got older, even he started doubting his memory.
By the time he attended Shin’o Academy at the age of 105, he had convinced himself that the adults had been correct. He’d survived enough Hollow attacks to know the truth. A Hollow that let a small Soul live and protected him? A Hollow that let Shinji follow him, singing horribly out of tune songs and chatting his ears off? A Hollow that let Shinji braid his hair and sleep on his back? A Hollow that tried to teach him to hunt using tiny lizards? Hah, it all sounded so far fetched that Shinji had to wonder if he’d gone mad for even thinking it was real.
In his last year at the Academy, he finally was able to access his inner world, and he was even more convinced. Endless white sand and a crescent moon met his eyes. He wondered, there and then, if White was his Zanpakuto Spirit. There were tales of Shinigami meeting their Spirits even before they gained an Asauchi. Rare tales, but tales told in whispers through the halls of the Academy. Naturally, he looked around for White, but he never found him. Instead, he found a beautiful, imperious, and dangerous-looking female Sphynx.
He met Sakanade.
Sakanade told him she was the only Spirit in his Soulscape. She knew nothing about a Spirit named White.
Confused, Shinji tried to press for answers, answers his Spirit couldn’t give him. Eventually he gave up, thinking once again that White had been a figment of a fevered dream.
But, the similarities he saw between his Soulscape and the Hueco Mundo he’d dreamed of were too bizarre. But, after years of visiting it, and finding no one but Sakanade, he just accepted it.
As a Shinigami, Shinji was strong. It took less than a decade to become a seated member, and only a century to make Fukutaicho (quite an achievement for a Rukongai street urchin).
He was known in the Gotei as an oddball. His habit of inverting and reversing things was considered his least weird habit.
When he came upon any Hollow, he would instinctually growl at it. The first time that happened, he’d been an unseated member facing his first Hollow. Everyone stopped to stare at him. A few Shinigami had chuckled and circled their fingers beside their heads (a universal sign that they thought him crazy). The Hollow froze for a second, then growled back. And, when it attacked, it attacked Shinji.
Another thing was his well-known hatred of lizards. Fevered manifestation or not, he still had nightmares about White making him hunt those damn thing. And the memory of the taste was enough to make him wake up drenched in sweat. (Sometimes he thought that at that moment was the most lucid he’d been. Only in a fevered dream would he dream about being sick)
The first lizard Hollow he’d ever seem, he had actually blanched and nearly threw up. His – at the time – Fukutaicho thought he was actually sick, and ordered him to the rear. After collecting himself, he’d gotten pissed. “God, damn lizards. I’ll fucking kill ya, jus’ like I killed those other lizards. No good ever comes from your scaley hides.” Again, they all thought he was crazy, especially when he’s killed the Hollow himself. That he was laughing maniacally as it dissipated didn’t help dispel that thought.
Small lizards, however, pissed him off even more. Mostly because when he DOES see them, he’s lunging at them instinctually, like they’re prey. The number of tiny, innocent lizards he’d killed had reached the triple digits, and everyone knew not to let him around the poor creatures if they were protective of them.
When he’d made Taicho in his third century, he got sick and babbled all about trips to Hueco Mundo and his Hollow Dad. The flu had hit him hard and lasted a whole week. By the end of it, every other Taicho had hears rumors about his delusions. They gave him odd looks for a while, but never really spoke about it after that.
After another century, Shinji met a 6th year student at the Academy named Aizen Sousuke. Shinji had instincts, and he learned early on to listen to them. His instincts were screaming that Aizen was trouble. Everyone seemed to like him, but Shinji saw what others didn’t. Shinji saw the calculative look in his eyes, the disdain for those he considered weaker than him, and the superiority complex weighing his shoulders like a cape. Aizen Sousuke would be trouble for Soul Society.
So, what does Shinji do but make him his new Fukutaicho (his previous one had been eaten by a unique Menos).
At first, Aizen thought himself in a great position. Until he had to deal with Shinji, and learning the rumors about his odd habits were true. Shinji liked to go Hollow Hunting, especially when a whole nest was found. Hearing Shinji growl at then and laugh maniacally when they growled back was a bit disturbing.
Then there was the lizard hunting. The first time he saw Shinji lunge, capture the lizard and simultaneously snap its neck, Aizen knew his Taicho was truly insane. Especially after everyone seemed perfectly fine with how Shinji was acting – like it was normal for Shinji to threaten to shove the dead lizard down someone named White’s throat (if White truly existed, he felt sorry for them).
The only thing the two of them seemed to agree on was an extreme disliking for the cold. When it got cold out, Shinji pushed their desks as far to the side as they could go, and brought in a Kotetsu for them to work under. It was the most productive they ever got working together, because they had to choose between the evil paperwork and moving from under the warm blankets. Staying warm usually won. And, Aizen was right there beside him.
Aizen almost transferred to another Division, but decided to hasten his plans. As soon as Urahara was named the new Taicho of the 12th, he was moving. And, only six months later, he was luring a group of Taicho’s and Fukutaicho’s into his plans. He could move up to Taicho when they were gone, and get away from Shinji. Then Shinji caught himself in his plans, and he decided to just take Shinji’s spot. It was his fault Aizen had to rush, after all.
Good news, they were the first subjects to survive. Bad news, they all escaped (likely with the help of Shihouin, since she also disappeared at the same time) and fled to the Living World. Not only was Shinji alive, but so was Urahara. And, Urahara still had his Hogyoku, damn him.
The only thing Aizen could do was have Central 46 send assassins after them.
*
Shinji sighed as he curled into the closest body, absorbing their heat. He was cold, and they were warm. He practically purred when someone curled up behind him, sandwiching his between them.
They had been on the run for a decade now. They couldn’t stay in one place for too long, or Soul Society would find them. They also didn’t have any way of interacting with the humans, since they didn’t have Gigai’s, and thus were invisible to the average human.
Urahara had somehow found a way to earn money and pay for their food. They all knew there was only one thing he could do to earn money. Hiyori was pissed, but couldn’t refuse the food, since that would mean losing control of their inner Hollow. At least Urahara never did his work in the town they were staying in, nor any town close by. As a master at Shunpo, he could cover all of Japan in only a day. And, since there was some strife in the country right now, no one could differentiate between his work, or the work of another in the same line of work as him.
When Shinji was about to doze off, the door burst open.
Everyone jumped to their feet, Zanpakuto’s in hand, only to relax when they saw Yoruichi, in cat form.
“We have to go. Now,” She stated.
“Already?” Mashiro – the body behind Shinji – complained.
Shinji was also upset – moving meant leaving behind all their warm blankets and pillows – but was already moving towards the door. “How long we got?”
“An hour at best,” she answered.
Shinji nodded. It was nice to have the former commander of the Omnitsukido on their side. Made it easier to avoid and detect them. He saw some pale dust out of the corner of his eye, and froze. Pale, almost white in color, and lazily flitting about in the sunlight. An idea came to him.
“Shinji, we need to move. Now,” Urahara urgently spoke.
“Yeah,” he agreed, continuing on. As they Shunpoed away, he said, “I jus’ had an idea. A crazy, reckless, insane idea.”
“Shinji, we’ve discussed this. We’re not splitting up,” Urahara stated firmly. “It’s too reckless. It’ll lessen our defenses, and we wouldn’t be able to help someone if they lose control of their Hollow.”
“No, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout splittin’ up,” he denied. He didn’t speak loudly (one of the pros of turning Hollow was the vastly improved hearing. And, the other three were trained Omni members (former) and could hear better than most).
“Okay, then, what’s your idea?” Yoruichi asked. “We’re desperate here.” While his ideas were certainly out there, some of those crazy ideas had come in handy.
“We’ve tried hidin’ in th’ Living World, right?” They all nodded. “But, we haven’t tried hiding in Hueco Mundo.”
Urahara stopped so suddenly that a normal human walked right through him. He quickly regained his momentum.
“That’s stupid, Baldie,” Hiyori snapped at him. She would have yelled if they weren’t being pursued. “We can only JUST control our Hollows, and being in Hueco Mundo might make them stronger.”
“I hate to agree, but I have to agree,” Kensei said. “Besides, we have no way of getting there. It’s not like we can create a Garganta.”
Shinji sighed. “Yeah, okay. I did say it was crazy and reckless.”
Urahara remained quiet, but he had a look in his eyes – a look no one else, not even Yoruichi saw. But, a look that said trouble.
They managed to escape that day and settled down in another large city. They couldn’t stay in a smaller town, as their Hollow Reiatsu was more obvious.
They ran, again and again, for yet another decade. Shinji and Urahara worked together on their project. Urahara tinkered with the idea and energy manipulation, until they got it correct. Then Urahara called the whole group together.
“I’ve figured out a way to get us to Hueco Mundo,” he said.
“This again?” Hiyori demanded, much louder this time. “We’ve been over this.”
“That was when a.) we were on the run, and b.) unable to control your Hollows,” he replied. “Look at us, Hiyori. We’ve been able to stay a step ahead of Soul Society. Only just, though, and only thanks to Yoruichi and me. We’re exhausted. Hueco Mundo is the one place that Soul Society won’t be able to follow us.” They had even followed them when they left Japan. Even now, they were in China, hiding with the ongoing war. “We can handle Hollows better than we can handle former allies. Even if it’s for a short time, a month even, we need to rest where they won’t find us.”
They could all see how tired he was, nor could they argue what he said. His grey eyes drooped and he had shadows under his eyes darker than a Shinigami’s uniform. Even when he was supposed to be resting, he couldn’t because he was too afraid the moment he did they’d be attacked again. It had happened several times, making him even more paranoid.
“What if we lose it upon reaching Hueco Mundo?” The quiet Hachi asked.
“Tessai and I can create a barrier. It’ll be just like when you were first learning to control them,” Urahara said.
“I’m f’r it,” Shinji said. “He’s been helping me learn ta create th’ Garganta.”
They all took a second to calm down and discuss it.
“Fine. But, if I lose it, I’m kicking your ass,” Hiyori glared at the two blonds.
Urahara nodded.
“We should leave from somewhere in Japan, just to be safe,” Shinji said. “An’ we need ta get supplies.”
“I’ve got money stashed away all over Japan,” Urahara said. “We can make some lists on what to buy, so we don’t accidentally buy a lot of duplicates.”
“Rumor has it that Hueco Mundo’s a permanent nighttime dessert,” Shinji said. “As my inner world in th’ same, I suggest warm clothes.”
Urahara nodded, already writing it down. “We can get those near Hokkaido.”
“Ah, somethin’ ta protect our faced when a sandstorm hits would likely also be good,” Shinji remembered. When Sakanade was upset, she causes the winds to wuther, making some fierce sandstorms. “Trust me, they ain’t pleasant.”
“Okay,” Kisuke agreed.
They made their lists, then tentatively made their way back to Japan, collecting supplies. Less than a week after they entered Japan’s boarders, their hideout was discovered.
“Soi-Fon is here,” Kisuke shouted as he slammed into their hideout, creating barriers around the building to keep them out, just a little bit longer. “We have to go. NOW!”
Just as Shinji opened the Garganta, the door burst open again.
“Hurry, go,” Shinji shouted.
Tessai, hiding a feline Yoruichi in a bag was first to enter.
Shinji unsheathed his blade. “Taorero, Sakanade.” (Collapse, Sakanade) He activated his Shikai. “Sakasama no Sekai.”
“Halt, or I’ll resort to killing,” Soi-Fon warned.
“Ya an’ what army,” Shinji taunted.
Soi-Fon tackled him, only to miss due to his Shikai’s effect. By the time she regained her footing, Shinji was in the Garganta. With a sharp salute, he closed the gate.
They ran along the path Tessai created, eventually arriving in Hueco Mundo.
Standing there, upon that white sand, with that crescent moon in the sky, Shinji realized something important. No, he hadn’t been dreaming. His trip to Hueco Mundo when he was eighty had really happened. His Soulscape was close, but standing here in the real thing, he realized if was only a facsimile. THIS is what he’d really seen, really experienced.
Which meant White had truly existed. With a wicked smile (alarming a few of them who were looking at him) he decided he had to find him. But, first… “Warmer clothes,” he said with a shiver.
They got into their packs to pull out the warmer clothes and cloaks they’d gotten from Hokkaido.
“Everyone got their goggles?” Kensei asked suddenly. “You might want to put them on. Like, now.”
They all saw the sandstorm barreling towards them, and decided that was a good idea.
They all put their goggles on and huddled together as Hachi created a barrier.
Hachi spent the last week working on a barrier that would allow air to pass through, but not sand, all in preparation for this. As barriers were his specialty, they left it to him.
“Wow, I didn’t think we’d see one so soon,” Love said as the wind wuthered, trying to tear down Hachi’s barrier.
“Jus’ like Sakanade’s,” Shinji said fondly. Or, were Sakanade’s just like Hueco Mundo’s?
“Your Zanpakuto Spirit must have a nasty streak,” Rose said, almost admiringly.
“She had her moments,” Shinji agreed.
And, just as suddenly as it started, it stopped. Hachi dropped the barrier and they all looked around.
“Okay, first thing’s first. Does anyone see a shelter?” Lisa asked.
“Um… does that count?” Mashiro asked hesitantly, pointing behind them.
They turned around to see a large building in the distance.
A building Shinji knew well. “That’ll do.”
“What if it’s occupied?” Rose asked.
“Then we either hide or flee,” Shinji said, already moving forward. “Jus’ like we usually do.”
There was no way to covertly sneak up on a building that was white on white sand, with nothing else in view for miles. But, they still entered from a side entrance. They felt no Reiatsu from within, but they were still cautious as they entered.
Shinji knew the chances were unlikely that White was still there, but maybe they’d get lucky and find a clue to his whereabouts.
As they entered, the corridors were covered in dust and sand, showing that it had been a while since the entrance was used. Yoruichi led the way and Urahara brought up the rear.
The hallway was long, and came out near a large door that Shinji also recognized (though it had been a while).
Still sensing no Reiatsu from anywhere, they stepped into the large room. As soon as Urahara was through the door, it slammed shut behind them. Instinctually, they all came together, guarding each other’s back with Zanpakuto’s drawn.
They were surrounded by six Hollows, the likes of which Shinji’s never seen. VERY human looking with only bits and pieces of their masks left. Each one had a Hollow Hole, confirming their species.
Urahara and Yoruichi gulped, visibly nervous – a first for either of them.
*Step*Step*Step*Step*Step*Step*Step*Step*Step*
None of the Hollows made a move, not towards them, or their swords (swords that all but two of them carried). The slow stepping sound came from behind the throne, a deep, dark, dense, and terrifying Reiatsu coming from behind that giant chair.
Shinji could feel it, that energy was too much even if all of them teamed up to face. They would be unable to get close to matching that Reiatsu.
But, when the figure stepped out from behind the throne, Shinji was floored.
Pale white skin; a deep black Stigmata on his face (oddly devoid of any mask fragments at all), leading to his Hollow hole on his chest that was framed by the open Shihakusho; red fur at his wrists and ankles; golden honey-brown eyes; and long, beautifully familiar, orange hair. The very Hollow Shinji wanted to find was before them. Now, would he recognize him?
White went to sit upon his throne, but he paused his ass an inch from the cushions to stare at Shinji. He stood up straight, his eyes not leaving Shinji’s.
Yes, there was the recognition he’d hoped for.
Shinji sheathed his blade and strode forward. Luckily he’d been semi-officially elected as the leader, so no one hesitated to let him speak for their group.
White stepped forward to meet him.
“Shinji, be careful,” Yoruichi said as he passed her.
“Trust me,” he said, patting her shoulder for a split second.
One of the other Hollows moved to stride forward, but White looked at him and growled. The Hollow nodded and returned to his spot. Shinji took note of him, determined to know him later. If White truly recognized him and they were welcome, that is.
The two of them met in the middle, each one wearing a smirk.
Shinji tilted his head jauntily to the side and snarked, “Hey, Dad. I’m home.”
White’s smirk turned into a warm smile. “Welcome home, Son.”
Chapter 2: A True Story
Summary:
“Was… was that old story actually true?” Love whisper-asked Rose.
Naturally everyone heard him.
*“That’s crazy,” Urahara muttered.
*
“At least let me rip his arms off?” Grimmjow pleaded.
“Maybe,” Ichigo said.
Notes:
Hey, so, I've actually finished this story already. I plan to post a chapter each night. So, stay tuned.

Chapter Text
“Hey, Dad. I’m home.”
“Welcome home, Son.”
The two met in the middle with a warm hug, remembering that fateful journey all those centuries ago.
“Was… was that old story actually true?” Love whisper-asked Rose.
Naturally everyone heard him.
“Wait, they ain’t enemies?” A blue-haired Hollow asked.
White let Shinji go to glare at him. “Nope. My Son came home, bringing friends. We’ll welcome them.”
“Damn it,” the blue-haired Hollow snarled.
The Hollows relaxed. The one that moved earlier actually laid down right where he was and took a nap, to Shinji’s amusement.
“Stop being lazy,” a small girl with a helmet yelled at him.
“It’s fine, Lilynette,” White said. In hopes of making them feel more comfortable, he sat down right there in the middle of the room. “Relax, you’re all welcome,” White told the former Shinigami’s.
Shinji sat beside him with a smile.
Eventually they all sat, Urahara sitting as far from White as possible.
They sat together in an odd sort of inter-racial circle. The napping Hollow even came over to lay beside White.
“So, seeing as I’m out of the loop, would someone like to fill me in?” Urahara asked, falsely pleasant.
“Yes, that WOULD be nice,” a blond Hollow woman agreed. “Especially since some of YOU know what’s going on. WE certainly haven’t heard of the King having a son.”
“Introductions first,” Shinji said, introducing the former Shinigami.
White introduced the Hollows. “I’m the Hollow King. You may call me Ichigo White. The one sleeping is Starrk, and the one sitting on him is Lilynette. The blue-haired one that likes to fight is Grimmjow. Beside him with the black hair is Ulquiorra. The green-haired woman is Nelliel. The blond woman is Harribel.”
The former Shinigami were shocked and terrified by Ichigo’s title – all but Shinji.
Who looked at him and asked, “When did you become the Hollow King?”
“When I killed the former king,” Ichigo answered simply.
“Ah. Makes sense,” Shinji agreed. “So, the story.”
Ichigo smiled and let him tell the tale, though he did interject often.
-“Don’t let him fool you, he was such a cry-baby,” Ichigo replied.
“I was only eighty,” Shinji protested.
-“He was just so cute as he cuddled close to me,” Ichigo chuckled.
“I was exhausted an’ cold, an’ yer like a damn furnace,” Shinji huffed.
-“He was such a little chatterbox, always with a story to tell or a melody to hum,” Ichigo reminisced.
“I was bored outta my mind,” Shinji actually rolled his eyes.
He still doesn’t know when to shut up,” Hiyori pointed out.
“Like yer any better, Hiyori,” Shinji snarked back.
“Okay, okay, you can all fight later. Continue the story,” Kensei broke it up before it could escalate. He was curious as fuck and he wanted to know the rest of the story.
“Fine,” Shinji agreed, huffing.
Ichigo smiled fondly.
-“The first time he growled at me was so cute,” Ichigo gushed. “And it was done purely on instinct. It was so unexpected that I laughed like crazy.”
“Hey, you growled at me first,” Shinji retorted.
“So, THAT’S where that odd habit came from,” Love realized.
“Wanna bet Shinji’s other odd habit came from Ichigo, too,” Hiyori chuckled.
“No bet,” Love, Rose, and Kensei replied simultaneously.
Shinji just glared at them, knowing what they were talking about.
-How was I supposed to know he didn’t like lizard?” Ichigo protested.
The other former Shinigami and even the Hollows were laughing at them, Shinji could tell.
“I was sick f’r days. I was lucky it didn’t kill me,” Shinji pointed out.
“Yeah, I realized that. Afterwards,” Ichigo replied.
“Wait,” Nel chuckled with a mischievous look in her eyes. “You fed him a lizard when YOU are a lizard Hollow?”
Ichigo just shrugged.
“YER a lizard?” Shinji asked in disbelief as the other former Shinigami burst out in laughter.
“Yeah,” Ichigo just shrugged. “I mean, just because I’m a lizard, doesn’t mean I wouldn’t eat lizard. Lizard is actually quite tasty, in my opinion.”
… “I hate you,” Shinji glared at Ichigo.
Ichigo tilted his head in confusion. “I don’t get it.”
-“An’ then I woke up in Soul Society,” Shinji finished his tale.
Ichigo nodded. “I created a Garganta and took you back,” Ichigo told them. “A young Soul shouldn’t be in Hueco Mundo.”
Shinji nodded. “Pro’ly f’r th’ best.”
“Wow, you really had a huge adventure,” Harribel noted.
“What I’m wondering is how your Reiatsu didn’t kill him and what you did to fight off his hunger,” Urahara – ever the scientist – wondered.
“Well, I have pretty good control over my Reiryoku,” Ichigo said. “As for his hunger… well… I kinda, sorta, fed him my own Reiatsu.”
“I ATE your Reiatsu?” Shinji asked, looking perturbed. Wait, was THAT why his Soulscape looked like Hueco Mundo’s desert?
“It was the only thing I could think of,” Ichigo answered sheepishly.
“Why didn’t you just take him back to Soul Society?” Hiyori wondered.
“I didn’t know how to,” Ichigo answered. “Unlike most Hollows, I didn’t remember anything before I evolved into an Arrancar. That meant I just aimlessly wandered around for years before I ran into Shinji.”
“That’s crazy,” Urahara muttered.
“I have a question,” the previously quiet Ulquiorra spoke up. “If he was a Soul a few centuries ago, why does he, and a few others feel and smell like they’re part Hollow?”
“Tha’s another long story,” Shinji sighed.
“Long story short: a megalomaniac has been experimenting on how to turn Souls into Hollows. They were unwilling victims,” Urahara answered.
“I want the long story, and I want it now,” Ichigo growled.
Seeing the scary look in his eyes (now fully golden in black sclera), they were suddenly reminded that Ichigo was the Hollow King – the strongest Hollow that even Yamamoto might have trouble with.
With a gulp, Urahara complied.
As the story was told, Ichigo got angrier and angrier.
“I knew Aizen was trouble – he’s been making trouble in Hueco Mundo for a while. He’s a dead man walking,” Ichigo vowed.
“Alright! Does that mean we get to go fight?” Grimmjow asked excitedly.
“No,” Ichigo said flatly.
“Damn it,” Grimmjow huffed.
“Ichigo, calm down,” Shinji said, placing his hand on the king’s shoulder.
Ichigo looked at him, at his hand, then back at Shinji. Who looked him straight in the eyes, completely unafraid.
The others waited with baited breaths, as the two maintained eye contact.
With a sigh, Ichigo relaxed. Then he pulled a move no one was expecting. He pulled Shinji into his lap, burying his face in Shinji’s neck and rubbing his cheeks over Shinji’s neck.
“Ah? Ha- haha- haha, hey, stop that. It tickled,” Shinji laughed.
“Awe, how cute,” Nel chuckled.
“Wha-? I ain’t cute,” Shinji protested.
“Not you, Ichigo,” she replied. He’s scenting you; marking you as his to protect,” she giggled.
“What? I can protect myself,” Shinji insisted. “I’m a former Taicho wit’ Bankai!”
Ichigo sulkingly glared (pouted) at Nel. “I’m not doubting you,” Ichigo insisted.
“But-?” Shinji looked back at him (difficult because of Shinji’s and Ichigo’s long hair.
“You… called me Dad, and accepted it when I called you son.” Looking away with a blush, he admitted, “I wanna protect you again. Just until you’ve all rested.” It hadn’t escaped his attention how tired they all looked.
Shinji smiled as he relaxed. “Okay. Jus’ f’r now.”
Ichigo nodded, letting him go.
They separated as they stood up, making everyone else (everyone except Starrk) stand as well.
“Nel, Ulquiorra, can you get them settled in?” Ichigo asked. “Put them all close together.”
“Yes,” Ulquiorra nodded.
“Count on me,” Nel agreed cheerfully.
“Yer not gonna go crazy an’ infiltrate Soul Society, are ya?” Shinji asked.
“No, I’m not. I’ve got kingly duties to tend to,” Ichigo replied.
“The Hollow King has duties?” Urahara asked, very curious what he did.
“Yeah. Right now, I have a pest to deal with,” Ichigo said with a sharp smile. “Grimmjow, with me.”
“Yes,” Grimmjow celebrated. “Can I kill him? He pisses me off.”
“We’ll have to see how the negotiations go,” Ichigo hedged.
“At least let me rip his arms off?” Grimmjow pleaded.
“Maybe,” Ichigo said.
The former Shinigami watched them go, a bit worried.
“Don’t worry about it. We’ve just got an unexpected and unwelcome guest at the gate,” she explained as she led them up the stairs.
“It takes guts ta jus’ show up at th’ Hollow King’s castle,” Shinji remarked.
“You’re… not much better,” she replied.
“Not like we knew,” Shinji said. “It was a building an’ we didn’t sense any Reiatsu from within. Thought it’d be a good place ta take shelter.”
“You guys got lucky that Ichigo likes you,” she pointed out. “But, even if he hadn’t known you, he would have been fair in judging you. Ichigo’s always fair.”
“Good ta know,” Shinji replied.
“Will there be trouble with the Hollow at the gate?” Mashiro asked from the rear of the group.
“That trash doesn’t deserve Ichigo-Sama’s attention. He should just die,” Ulquiorra said.
Just as the view outside the window lit up with a dark red light.
“Holy shit.”
“What the fuck?”
“An enemy attack?”
All the former Shinigami backed up against the wall, prepared for an attack.
“Ah, he might be dead after that,” Nel said, sounding happy about that.
“Trash like that should just die,” Ulquiorra repeated.
“Ah, was that Ichigo-Sama?” Urahara asked.
“Yup. That was his Grande Ray Cero,” Nel agreed with a smile.
‘Note to self: don’t piss Ichigo off,’ almost all of the former Shinigami thought simultaneously.
Nel led them to a tower. “This is Tower twelve. Your group can have it. There’s enough room for all of you to have your own room, of for you all to cuddle together. Go ahead and take your rest, and one of us will let you know when supper is,” she said.
“‘Supper’?” Lisa echoed.
“Yeah,” Nel agreed. “Ichigo likes to eat actual food, so we get food from the Living World, so Ichigo can have his fish and rice. It’s pretty nice to eat something besides Hollow occasionally.”
“Thank you for the invitation,” Yoruichi said when the others seemed at a loss.
Nel smiled and left with a wave, Ulquiorra silently trudging behind her.
The eleven of them took a look around the tower. There were enough rooms that they could have had five rooms apiece, the then some.
They all chose to settle into a room large enough for all of them.
It was Kensei who asked. “Why were you two nervous the moment you saw those Hollows. We’ve never seen you nervous before.”
Kisuke and Yoruichi shared a look.
“Have you ever heard of a Vasto Lorde before?” Kisuke asked.
The questions got resounding no’s from all of them, even Tessai.
“How about the Zero Division?” Yoruichi asked.
“Yes,” a few of the Taicho’s agreed.
“The Zero Division is the Royal Guard for the Soul King,” Yoruichi stated.
“And, Vasto Lorde are advanced Hollows. They’re the evolved form of the Adjuchas.”
The others gulped nervously. Adjuchas were VERY dangerous types of Hollows.
“The last time a Vasto Lorde was seen in Soul Society, Ginrei-Dono was a young boy, and his father and the previous head of the Shiba Clan held her off until the Zero Division could arrive,” Yoruichi explained to their increasing nervousness. “The Shiba Head died and Ginrei-Dono father was in the 4th for almost ten months, having sustained injuries so bad that at first even Unohana thought he may die.”
“The Zero Division shows up to handle cases of Hollows that are far beyond the capabilities of even Taicho-level Hollows. Vasto Lorde are seen so rarely, they’re practically legend,” Urahara said. “But, they’re not the top of the food chain.”
“Vasto Lorde evolve into Arrancar,” Yoruichi said. “Arrancar have never attacked Soul Society, but if one did, it would be disastrous. I can only imagine the number of deaths that would occur.”
“And, every Hollow in that throne room was an Arrancar,” Urahara said, making them go pale. Even Shinji couldn’t believe it.
“I, uh, think Ichigo was a Vasto Lorde when he saved me,” Shinji said in a quiet voice. “Earlier he said, ‘before I evolved into an Arrancar’.”
“Yeah, I caught that part,” Urahara said with a wry chuckle. “If not for Ichigo taking a liking to you, we’d all likely be dead.”
Shinji laughed humorlessly. “Y’know, I don’t think my brain can process this. I’mma lay down f’r a nap, and maybe everything will make sense when I wake up.”
“Yeah, may as well sleep,” Kisuke agreed. “If he wanted us dead, we’d be dead before we had a chance to process anything.”
“Well, at least it would be quick,” Yoruichi said, laying down beside Shinji.
The three of them napped well, though the others had trouble sleeping, too terrified to think straight.
Even through supper (a rather normal meal, even if they were in Hueco Mundo) they were too tense to relax. To be polite, no one said anything, but they all noticed. Ichigo bid them good night, and they were allowed to do whatever they wanted.
They returned to their tower, and, too exhausted to think, passed out.
*
(Earlier in the night)
Ichigo had to let his eyes adjust after his Grande Ray Cero. It was too bright in the deep dark of Hueco Mundo. Luckily, no one was brave or strong enough to attack him after he’s fired one off.
“Damn, King. He really pissed ya off, didn’t he?” Grimmjow noted, blinking his eyes rapidly to adjust as well. “Oh, wait, he’s alive.” He glanced down at the Hollow trembling in the sand at their feet.
“I know. I missed on purpose,” Ichigo stated as he strode forward to kneel beside the Hollow, who looked about ready to piss himself. “Do you know why I missed, Luppi?” Ichigo asked deadly, quiet, and calm voice as he stared down at him with cold golden eyes. “I missed because I have a use for you. You, my annoying Hollow, are going to carry a message to you leader. Got it?”
Luppi nodded. He knew if he defied him now, he was a dead (dead…er?) Hollow.
“You tell your master that those Souls belong to ME now. If he tries to touch them ever again, it will be the last thing he ever does. Got it?”
Luppi nodded.
“Good,” Ichigo said calmly, standing up. “Now, run back to your master like a cur, with your tail between your legs,” Ichigo taunted, turning back to HIS castle.
How dare Aizen try to tell HIM what to do. This is Hueco Mundo, and HE is the King around here.
“What a weakling,” Grimmjow dissed as he followed behind Ichigo.
“Oh? I thought you wanted to fight him,” Ichigo teased.
“Hah. Something like that couldn’t even fight off my boredom,” Grimmjow retorted.
“Well, you’re not wrong about that,” Ichigo agreed. “I’m off to my rooms. Spread the word, I’m not to be disturbed.”
“Yeah, you got it,” Grimmjow agreed, running off to find his mate. Maybe he could get in a good spar after all?
When Ichigo got to his rooms, he snarled at the thought of what Aizen had done. Aizen wasn’t supposed to Hollowfy them until 1900. He’d verified that thoroughly with each of the surviving Vizards. But, it was just now 1901, and they’d been on the run for two decades already. Did his coming to the past change things? How?
He wanted to prevent the Hollowfication, since they didn’t need to go through THAT. He planned on stopping Yhwach before he attacked Soul Society, so there was no need for the Vizards to exist. He wanted them all to be happy, having never experienced the Hollowfication, banishment, and persecution that had happened to the Vizards he’d known.
Now he had to figure out how to apologize to them for something he could have prevented. Was this how Getaboshi had felt?
Still, if WAS nice to see them again. He’d seen Shinji when he’d been younger, but most of that trip Ichigo had been an amnesiac. When Getaboshi had sent him back, none of them had prepared for that, even though the Hogyoku had warned him there would be very hefty prices for going back.
Ichigo was in his Vasto Lorde form without any memories when he’d found the small Soul (really, how had he survived that the first time?). He could only be glad he somehow recognized him as Pack, and had protected him. By the time he remembered who he was, he’d already killed Baraggan.
He visited Soul Society (glad that he could still take his Soul form. Radiating Hollow Reiatsu would have been bad very bad), dropped Shinji off, then opened a Garganta to the Soul King’s Palace. He could open a Garganta to any place he had been before.
Needless to say, Ichibei and the rest of the Royal Guard had been surprised by his tale. Ichibei was as he’d remembered: falsely carefree, wily, and plotting several plots (a look he knew from the Ichibei he’d known and Getaboshi). Eventually they agreed to let Ichigo handle Yhwach, but Ichigo had to keep the Hollow Throne. Ichibei explained that with the death of Baraggan, the worlds were in danger of tipping. And, if Ichigo resided in Soul Society, then it would send the balance completely out of whack.
Ichigo agreed.
He still visited them occasionally (every few decades, or so). They were as fond of him as their future counterparts had been (i.e. they knew that if the Soul King fell, he was their only hope), and even called him the Soul Prince.
He accepted, knowing he would be an enemy if he didn’t.
He was slightly grateful he had to stay in Hueco Mundo. He wasn’t sure he could handle being around the past versions of his friends and not interfering in any way (something Getaboshi told him, very vehemently, that he had to do).
The only thing he’d sworn to prevent was the Hollowfication, and he’d failed at that.
With a sigh, he sat by his window to gaze upon the world he’d governed for centuries now. He had to do something about Aizen. But what…?
Notes:
Thank you for reading, I appreciate all of you. Any kudos, comments, or critiques are welcome.
Ichigo is 2/3 enjoying reminiscing about the past and 1/3 making fun of Shinji. Their parent/child bond is so adorable.
So much makes sense to the Vizards now. The growling and the lizard hunting.
Shinji realizes Ichigo is a Lizard. Laughed myself silly writing it.
Awe, we get a cuddle scene, right in front of everyone. Toooooo cute!
Yes, the information about the Vasto Lorde and Arrancar were off. Since they're so rare, they're pretty much legends, and how many of our legends are actually correct? Yeah, not many. The information became twisted through the centuries, but is still somewhat accurate.
Aizen done fucked up, and we can only laugh because even he doesn't know how badly he's messed up.
Ichibei could sense Ichigo's power and decided, well, if we need him, I can use him. For now, stick him in Hueco Mundo where he can maintain balance, and hope it never comes to that. He's too smart to think the first thing he needs to do is get rid of Ichigo.
Yes, Ichigo can appear as a normal Soul. He's just closer to his inner Hollow (Shiro, hence his name) in Hueco Mundo. Besides, hiding as a Soul made for great spying.
Let me know what y'all thought in the comments below.

Chapter Text
The last few decades had been difficult for Yamamoto Genryusai. It had started when the Hollow King (not the one he remembered, so a new one, and that was terrifying in a different way) showed up covertly (not setting off any alarms. Even Sasakibe had been unaware of his visit) and warned him that there was a traitor in his midst, and that they were running rampant in Hueco Mundo. The King warned him to stop them, or he would take matters into his own hands.
After that, he searched, but couldn’t find any proof. Not until the arrest of Urahara Kisuke and Tsukabishi Tessai. He was sure they were the traitors the King spoke of after they disappeared. Before Yamamoto could advocate for the Shinigami that had been Hollowfied, he learned they, too, had disappeared. Central 46 declared that they were working together.
Yamamoto tried to protest, but they were all seen soon after in the Living World. He’d had no choice but to sign a writ for their arrest or death.
The group was good at staying out of their hands, but that was to be expected when Urahara Kisuke was with them. The man knew how the Omnitsukido worked better than even Yamamoto did.
If only Yoruichi hadn’t disappeared at the same time. Central 46 and several nobles whispered that she may be with them, but the Shihouin princess had never been seen with them, even as the group fled from ambushes and assassinations. With no proof, they couldn’t charge her, or the Shihouin’s. But, their standings in high society had dropped quite a bit.
The last time the group had been seen, they had escaped into a Garganta. It seems like they were truly part Hollow now, and Yamamoto’s heart ached. He’d watched those Souls grow, from new recruits to Fukutaicho’s and Taicho’s. He’d worked with them, ate with them, and shared drinks with them, some of them for centuries, and it hurt to think they didn’t feel the same way. As much as he wished he could still trust them, all evidence pointed to them being guilty.
And NOW he had to deal with THIS.
‘This’ being a letter from the Hollow King, himself.
An hour ago, the Hollow King stepped out from a Garganta just outside the Seireitei’s boarders, causing the walls to come crashing down. Jidanbo had confronted the intruder, and Yamamoto truly thought the young gatekeeper would die.
But, the Hollow King had caught the blades in his bare hands and apologized for causing the disturbance. He left the letter with Jidanbo, then promptly left.
Yamamoto knew the Hollow King could sneak into the Seireitei (he’d done it before, and he could do it again, despite them changing their security barriers). That meant he had caused a disturbance for a reason.
And, when he’d read that letter, Yamamoto had to curse under his breath at the youth.
-
To Yamamoto Genryusai Shigekuni, Taicho of the First Division and Soutaicho of the Gotei 13.
I know my sudden appearance at your gates will be alarming. You have my apologies. However the matter I wish to speak to you about is of the upmost importance. I write to you to request a meeting between our forces. You have my word that neither I, nor my forces will attack you or you forces.
Since neither you, nor I, would be comfortable in each other’s territories, I suggest we meet up in the Living World at OOO coordinates, on XX day, at 3:00 PM. It’s the top pf a hill, far away from any human settlements. Feel free to check the area beforehand, I won’t be offended.
I will be bringing four of my Royal Guards. If you want, bring four of your Taicho’s. It would be best if things remained BALANCED. Though due to the matters I wish to discuss, it would be best were you to bring Taicho’s that know about the SK.
I Truly hope to see you there.
The Hollow King, The Lizard, Ichigo White.
-
The letter was full of all sorts of unsettling information. From him knowing his name was Shigekuni (no one has addressed him as such in centuries, not even Chojiro), wanting him to bring Taicho’s that know about the Soul King (basically noble Taicho’s) and referring to Him as SK, and ending with his name (he hadn’t said the last time they’d been face-to-face).
‘Ichigo White, huh,’ he thought. He would have to contact Ichibei about this. After all, a meeting between the Hollows and the Shinigami hasn’t taken place since the late 1200’s.
For the meantime, he would have to attend a meeting with the Taicho’s due to the pandemonium of Ichigo’s visit.
*
Ichigo enjoyed the week he spent with the Vizards. Getting to see Shinji and the gang again was nice. He even helped them with their inner Hollows. Turnabout was fair play, after all.
Teaching them that their inner Hollow wasn’t evil wasn’t as easy task. It was so ingrained in them that Shinigami were good and Hollows were evil, that the thought that that was wrong didn’t process well. Until Ichigo asked Shinji (in front of all of them, but asking Shinji directly) if he thought Ichigo was evil. Shinji had denied it, immediately and vehemently, and Ichigo patted his shoulders and said, “There you go, then.”
The looks that passed over Shinji’s face were shock, thoughtfulness, and finally comprehension (Ichigo missed cameras, and wished he had one to capture that look on Shinji’s face to blackmail him with at a later date). Shinji comprehended what Ichigo said after that, and so did the others.
Spending time with the other Arrancar had helped with that. Starrk liked to take naps, anytime and anywhere and in the oddest of places, and he’d always invite them to join him (Kensei had found him napping with Lilynette and Mashiro once).
Nel, Mashiro, and Lilynette got along great (like when they thought it was a great idea to prank the other Vizards (Ichigo suggested the name, and it stuck) and Arrancars).
Ulquiorra was often found in the library (a bunch of random books that Ichigo had found discarded or at thrift stores) and was willing to discuss any of them at any time.
Harribel and Urahara could be found discussing strategy, sometimes even with Ulquiorra, at the oddest of hours.
Grimmjow enjoyed fighting, but was willing to take a no, thanks, or stop once someone got hurt (Ichigo was so proud of him. Once upon a time, the panther would have been unwilling to stop unless someone was dead.
The Vizards got along well with the Arrancar, the same as they did with other Shinigami and Souls in Soul Society. That they were Hollows couldn’t be denied. That they were all the top echelon of Hollows couldn’t be denied. But, they couldn’t see them as evil. And, if their new friends weren’t evil, neither were their inner Hollows (nor were they for using their inner Hollows).
Ichigo enjoyed his week with them all. But, he had to fight down emotions he’d rather NOT think about. Yes, it was nice to see the Vizards again. And, yes, he truly did see Shinji as a pseudo-son (seeing him as a small child and taking care of him had solidified that, despite having known him before he’d come back). The Vizards, all of them, were Pack. But, Urahara wasn’t a Vizard. Neither were Yoruichi or Tessai, but that didn’t seem to matter to his brain. THEY were the same in his mind; friends and teachers,
But, Urahara was different. It was seeing him so OPEN that affected him. He had no hat or fan to hide behind, meaning Ichigo saw those sharp, intent, focused, intelligent grey eyes out in the open. And that smirk? It drove him crazy (crazier). Him not hiding behind a hat and fan should be illegal. Ichigo was lucky that Urahara wasn’t wearing the Jinbei as he once had (…or that he would? Honestly, past and future tenses could get confusing). If he’d had to deal with his exposed chest and loose pants on TOP of his open face, he might have pounced on him already.
It was bad enough that the Arrancar already knew who had caught his interest (the first creature who had since they had known him) and their sly glances and hidden snickers only served to irritate Ichigo.
Nel, especially, liked to tease him.
One day, Ichigo gave in and asked quite seriously, despite the blush on his cheeks, “Is it weird that I’m interested in my son’s friend like that?”
…
“Baw-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha,” was her answer.
“Shut up, Nel,” Ichigo demanded as he stomped away.
When he got in these kinds of mood swings, only Grimmjow was brave enough to spar with him. And, to avoid the temptation of cutting off important bits (bits that Ulquiorra would miss) he left Zangetsu with Starrk. Grimmjow still had to be carted off to the infirmary (he teased Ichigo too much about his crush) and Ulquiorra followed right behind.
Hours later, Shinji found Ichigo laying atop his tower, looking up at the moon.
“Ya okay, Dad?” Shinji asked.
At first, Shinji had addressed him thusly as a joke. But, as they got closer, the title became sincere. Ichigo got a warm feeling in his chest every time he heard that title from his lips.
“I’m a little irritated,” Ichigo admitted.
Shinji laid down beside him, then asked, “Was it anything I did?”
“Huh?” Ichigo sharply glanced at him, utterly baffled.
Shinji looked back. “Ya keep lookin’ my way when it’s evident tha’ somethin’ is botherin’ ya. So I thought I did somethin’ wrong. Some sorta Hollow Taboo I broke.”
“No, it’s not you or anything you’ve done that’s bothering me,” Ichigo answered. Then, quietly, “It’s my fault.”
“Ah th’ ‘it’s not ya but me’ talk,” Shinji muttered.
“Where did you even pick that up?” Ichigo wondered.
“Livin’ humans ‘re amusin’, an’ we had ta pick up on some o’ their slang ta fit in,” Shinji pointed out.
Ichigo nodded, understanding.
“So, ya wanna tell me wha’ this ya an’ mot me problem is?” Shinji asked after several minutes of silence.
“You’re not going to leave this alone, are you?” Ichigo asked.
“Nope. Ya got tha’ meetin’ wit’ th’ Soutaicho t’morrow, an’ I don’t want ya ta be distracted. Th’ old man’s a wily one,” Shinji smirked.
Ichigo sighed. “It’s just… stupid.”
“It’s not stupid if it’s botherin’ ya,” Shinji replied.
Eventually, Ichigo asked, “Would you… be bothered if I was attracted to one of your friends?”
Shinji looked at him, like he couldn’t believe what he just heard. Ichigo was looking away from him and his ears were glowing red. “I mean, as long as yer not hittin’ of Love ‘r Rose I don’t see a problem.” When Ichigo glanced his way (cheeks bright red and looking uncertain) he wasn’t a king, but a man. “In Soul Society, once a Soul reaches a century in age, no one cares about who they take as a lover. Well… usually. There are some Souls that look too young despite their age. All those who came wit’ me are all adults, an’ can take whatever partners they want. As long as ya ain’t homewrecking, I don’t care.”
Ichigo sighed. “Okay.”
“I, uh, actually came up here ta ask ya a similar question,” Shinji admitted.
“One of the other Arrancar appeals to you?” Ichigo asked.
“Yeah,” Shinji nodded. Unlike Ichigo, he wasn’t embarrassed at all. “But, ya see me a sorta son, an’ I wasn’t sure if ya would take offense if I was interested in one o’ them.”
“What do your instincts say?” Ichigo asked cryptically.
“Well, when I look at ‘em I have ta stop myself from lickin’ my lips – or them,” Shinji admitted. "They smell so damn good tha’ I jus’ wanna nibble on them. An’ they look so damn good all rumpled, and I wanna muss them up even more.”
Strangely, Ichigo wasn’t bothered by that at all. “Shinji, you’re part Hollow now. We Hollows act on instincts, often before we even listen to common sense. What you just described is a mating instinct,” Ichigo explained.
“Yeah, I knew what I wanted ta do ta them. I jus’ wanted ta make sure ya wouldn’t go inta a murderous rage when ya found out,” Shinji huffed.
“As long as you’re not interested in Ulquiorra or Grimmjow, I’m fine with you mating with one of my Arrancar,” Ichigo said. “As long as you’re not homewrecking, I don’t care.”
Shinji cackled. “So, how do I show him I’m interested.
“Oh? ‘Him’, huh?” Ichigo smirked. “Unless you’re interested in one of the Fraccion, I believe that eliminates everyone except Starrk.”
“Shit,” Shinji cursed.
Ichigo laughed. “It’s fine. It’s fine. Normally, to show a potential mate you’re interested in, you would spar with them. So many clothes come off and you get to see them all bloodies. It’s nice. The winner is usually the dominant partner. Starrk, however, is a different matter entirely. He’s too strong, and refuses to spar with anyone but me. Your best bet would be to be completely frank with him. Hm… Maybe some overly friendly cuddling during, or after, a nice nap, when you’re all nice and relaxed.”
“I’ll… take tha’ inta consideration,” Shinji muttered. “Since ya didn’t expect such instincts ta guide yer relationship, does tha’ mean yer interested in one o’ th’ non-Vizards?”
Now that the topic had shifted back to him and his crush, Ichigo blushed, but admitted, “Yes.”
“Ah, I knew it,” Shinji bragged. “Yer interested in Kisuke.”
“How? Am I really that obvious?” Ichigo sat up to hide behind his knees
“I mean… kinda,” Shinji replied. “Yoruichi had repeatedly hit on ya an’ made all sorts o’ interestin’ come-ons. If ya were interested, ya would have responded. Tessai’s not interested whatsoever in romantic relations or intimacies. Leavin’ Kisuke.”
“Yes, fine, I’m obvious,” Ichigo huffed.
“Kisuke’s not tied to anyone, nor is he interested in Yoruichi. I asked shortly after we went into exile together. We had found a particularly nice hideout, with a few separate rooms. I offered them a room, thinkin’ I was bein’ nice. Both o’ them looked like they were offended an’ wanted ta kill me,” Shinji reminded.
Ichigo had to stop himself from hunting Kisuke down, right there and then. That was really good news, since Ichigo thought they WERE interested in each other.
Shinji stood up, stretching. “Ah, I think I feel like a nice nap right about now. See ya, Dad.”
Ichigo knew where he was going, and smirked at him. “Sleep well, Son.”
Left alone, he couldn’t help but thing about Kisuke. If he wasn’t interested in Yoruichi, then he had a chance. And, Shinji wouldn’t be upset if he hit on his friend. With a smile, he went to hunt down a certain blond scientist.
*
Kisuke was in the library (again) talking with Ulquiorra about a strategy tome he’d recently read. While their viewpoints were opposite, they both agreed that the human tactics wouldn’t always work for them. After all, humans couldn’t use Reiatsu, nor could they fight in the air where attacks could come from any direction at any time.
It was a nice way to take his mind off of Ichigo. Not that it helped much, his mind was used to focusing on multiple tasks at once.
Ichigo was an interesting subject for his mind to focus on, and he couldn’t seem to help himself. As soon as he would step into view, his bright orange hair caught his attention, and he couldn’t stop himself from watching him. He’s never seen that particular shade of hair before. His brown-golden eyes had been sharp and fierce – judging them all – before he’d seen Shinji. When he’d smiled, those eyes lit up brilliantly. The man had captured Kisuke’s attention completely from the start.
His attitude was also surprising, making Kisuke want to study him even more. He’d never known a Hollow to be kind. Nor one who would refuse to eat a small, helpless child like Shinji had been. The boy must have had an abundance of Reiatsu, even then, and he would have likely made a nice snack for an ever-hungry Hollow. But, one thing he’d learned was that none of the Arrancar need to eat. So, maybe Ichigo hadn’t needed to eat as a Vasto Lorde. There was so much unknown about them that Kisuke had to stop himself from pestering their hosts for information.
As much as he tried to stay away from Ichigo, the Hollow King drew his attention more than the others. And, he’d answer a few questions when Kisuke asked. But, the man was often busy with his Kingly duties, leaving Kisuke watch mostly from afar.
Talking with Harribel and Ulquiorra helped, as those two were extremely intelligent. But, there were times it got weird. He knew Ulquiorra was taken, and he would never interfere with that. But, every time he thought he might be interested in Harribel, she would politely excuse herself. Ulquiorra would look at him with no emotion showing on his face (not even boredom) and tell him to follow his instincts.
Kisuke wasn’t sure what to make of that. He knew his ‘type’ was hard to pin down. He liked both genders, and didn’t really care what his partner looked like. No, those he liked were the ones that caught his attention, and that was hard to do. Ichigo had his attention, but Kisuke wasn’t sure the Hollow was interested.
Confused, he would go to the library to bury himself in the books (he’d already read everything there twice over). It didn’t help. Much.
Ulquiorra seemed to realize his thoughts had shifted. He said, “Follow your instincts,” again and left the library. But, as he left, he held the door opened and bowed. “Ichigo-Sama.”
Kisuke looked up quickly to see Ichigo pause beside Ulquiorra. “I need to speak to Urahara-San privately.”
“I shall see that you are not disturbed, Ichigo-Sama,” Ulquiorra vowed.
“Thanks,” Ichigo said. As Ulquiorra closed the door, he walked over to sit across from Ichigo.
“Ichigo-Sama,” Kisuke nodded. They’d all learned early on that Ichigo preferred his given name over his last. “How can I help you?”
“I want your honest opinion about something. Do you believe in time travel?” Ichigo asked. He’d debated not saying anything, but it felt dishonest. He didn’t want to fall into bed with him, only for Kisuke to find out later. That would only lead to a lot of anger and mistrust, and might lead to Kisuke hating him. That would tear Ichigo’s heart apart.
“It’s possible,” Kisuke said quickly, and without doubt. Seeing Ichigo’s interest, he instantly explained. “It’s actually happened before, and has been documented. The Shinigami use a passage between the worlds called the Dangai, and time flows differently. Occasionally accidents will happen, and a Soul or Shinigami get caught up and spit out in a different time. Usually only the weaker Shinigami get caught up in it. It’s a rare occurrence that had only been documented ten different times.”
“I see,” Ichigo mused. That explained why they had used the Dangai when Getaboshi sent him back. “What’s the longest time difference registered?” Ichigo asked.
“The longest time difference registered was the Dangai sending someone five years into the future,” Kisuke explained. “But, it’s a difficult thing to comprehend. No one’s been able to successfully jump time on purpose.
“Does it always jump to the future?” Ichigo wondered.
“Not always. A few times they’ve taken Souls to the past. The longest past jump registered is three years and four months,” Kisuke explained.
“I see,” Ichigo repeated. “What would you say if I told you I jumped more than just a few years onto the past?”
Kisuke’s grey eyes focused sharply on Ichigo. “I’d say I’m very interested in hearing your tale, Ichigo-Sama.”
Ichigo told him everything. He could see Kisuke’s fingers twitching, as if he wanted to take noted. But, he had faith the scientist would remember everything.
“So, you rescued Shinji all those years ago because you recognized him?” Was the first thing Kisuke asked.
“No, I was still amnesiac back then,” Ichigo said. “But, I’ve always been protective of children, and he was so cute I couldn’t help myself.”
“I see,” Kisuke mused, thinking about everything Ichigo had told him. “So, Soul Society fell due to enemies from Hell?”
“Hard to win when every time we killed someone they’d just go back to Hell,” Ichigo sighed.
“Yeah, that would be difficult,” Kisuke agreed. Especially if Yamamoto was dead. “So, why are you telling me this?”
“I didn’t want it to be a secret between us,” Ichigo replied.
“Why?” Kisuke pushed.
“Because, I’m…” Ichigo blushed and admitted, “I’m interested in you.”
“Me? Or the me you once knew?” Kisuke demanded.
“You,” Ichigo said. “I was never interested in Getaboshi,” Ichigo insisted. “Yes, Getaboshi was – or will be – you, but Kisuke is different. It’s more like he is what you could become, but you’re not him. You’re both genius scientists, but… YOU are not so broken that you can’t trust anyone. YOU aren’t so weighed down with guilt that you’d do anything I asked in an attempt to atone, even after I forgave you. YOU are far more open than I ever saw him. The way you are now is completely different. It’s hard to explain, but… I was never attracted to Getaboshi, but I AM attracted to you.”
“I… see. Can I have time to think about this?” Kisuke asked.
“Of course,” Ichigo agreed immediately. “I would never force anyone into a relationship. Ever.”
Kisuke watched him go, feeling conflicted.
They all knew Ichigo was bad ay lying (probably a first for a Hollow). But, Ichigo hadn’t lied to him the whole time they were speaking tonight. But, could a mere century make him that different a person? Did he trust his companions? Yes, without a doubt. He ever trusted Hiyori. They’d been on the run for decades together. If he didn’t trust them, or they him, then they would have all died years ago. Was he full of guilt? Yes. Sometimes it felt like guilt and self-hatred was a cloak he wore, unable to take it off. But, according to Ichigo, he’d been much worse in the future.
…
Ichigo was attracted to HIM, but not his future counterpart. That fact was hard for him to understand. Ichigo was a handsome man, and he could have anyone he wanted. Why, out of everyone he could choose from, did he want Kisuke?
“You seem confused.”
Kisuke looked up to see Harribel in the room. “Oh, hello, Harribel-San.”
She walked closer. “What has you puzzled?”
“I, um, I’d rather not say,” Kisuke hedged.
“As you wish,” she agreed. As she walked over to the bookshelves, she said, “We Hollows are creatures of instincts. Sometimes I have trouble understanding you Souls and your emphasis on reason and rationality. You often have to have a reason – an excuse – to follow your instincts. It doesn’t seem like you have any instincts other than battle lust sometimes.
She turned those sober green eyes on him and he felt like a specimen on a slide.
“Sometimes there isn’t any reason other than because it feels right. Sometimes all thinking gets you is a headache. But,” she continued as she left, a book in his hand, “maybe that’s the difference between Souls and Hollows?”
Alone again, he couldn’t help but think about it. Maybe it wasn’t that Kisuke was different from his future self, but that ICHIGO was different? In the future, Ichigo was human and thought rationally like a Soul – like a Shinigami, not a Hollow. Ichigo also wasn’t as soft as he’d once been.
He could tell from Ichigo’s story that he was too young, too soft, and too naïve for the wars he’d been involved in. But a few centuries as a Hollow had shed that softness. The Ichigo now was willing to do whatever he had to do, even kill. It was… It was instinct and bloodlust.
And, that appealed to Kisuke more than it should have, He remembered whet Ulquiorra had said. “‘Follow my instincts’, huh?”
Suddenly emboldened, he got up and made his way to a pat of Los Noches that he’s never visited.
“About time,” Nel said as he passed her.
When he looked at her, she smiled wickedly and waved. He nodded, then continued on his way. At Ichigo’s door, he knocked.
The door opened and he saw the naked, hungry look in Ichigo’s golden eyes.
“Kisuke, if you cross this threshold I won’t be able to stop myself,” Ichigo warned him.
With a hand on his chest, Kisuke pushed him backwards, until they were both in the room and the door closed. “That’s fine by me. Ichigo.”
Ichigo pounced and Kisuke let him. Something told him this would be the wildest ride of his afterlife, and he was looking forward to it.
Notes:
Thank you for reading, I appreciate you all. Any kudos, comments, or critiques are welcome.
What did y'all think of the rare pair of Shinji x Starrk? Surprised?
So, this fic went from a one-chapter fic to a four chapter fic because I heard one of my regulars ask, "Is it bad that I think my son's friend is handsome?" I work at a club, with a lot of older clientele. But, as soon as I heard that, I thought of Ichigo finding Shinji's friend attractive, and I couldn't stop myself.
Sorry, not sorry.
Ichigo and Shinji are amusing. Both worried about the same thing. Like father, like son, right?
I'm just guessing what could be strong enough to stop Ichigo. And, since Kubo might show more of the Hell arc, I thought to make those mystery enemies the BBEG.
Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Chapter 4: A Happy Ending
Summary:
“I keep waiting on the other waraji to drop,” Kisuke said. Everything’s been TOO good lately.”
“I know what you mean,” Yoruichi agreed. “I feel like something dangerous is coming.”
Kisuke nodded.
*
In the background, Kyouraku placed a hand over his mouth, as if to stop himself from saying something.
“Something you would like to say, Kyouraku-Taicho?” Ichigo asked.
*
For now, he enjoyed the sight of the moon with his mate beside him.
Notes:
Hey, I'm back. Guess who lost their laptop charger? If you guessed me, you're correct. So, sorry for the delay.
This is the longest chapter of the four, so, enjoy.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Kisuke limped the next day. Just a little bit, but it was enough to catch Yoruichi’s attention. She smirked and wiggled her eyebrows, and Kisuke lit up. It was the first time he’s blushed in almost three centuries.
“Do I need to give him a talking to?” Yoruichi asked as Kisuke worked.
Don’t you dare,” he exclaimed. He’d die of embarrassment; he just knew it.
“Ara, you’ve gotten quite smitten,” she chuckled.
“Yeah,” he agreed.
But, to Yoruichi, it sounded uncertain, almost wary. She asked, in a serious tone, “Are you happy?”
Kisuke took some time to think about that. As he thought, his hands never stopped moving. His movements were rote, having done this a million times. “I’m not unhappy,” he eventually replied. “We’re in a safe place – which, who ever thought we’d say that about Hueco Mundo?” Kisuke chuckled wryly. “Shinji and the others have found a home as Ichigo has welcomed them. And, their control over their inner Hollows has improved drastically. They even have food here. Everything we were worried about mere weeks ago has been addressed.”
“But…?” She wondered, knowing he was hesitating.
“I keep waiting on the other waraji to drop,” Kisuke said. "Everything’s been TOO good lately.”
“I know what you mean,” Yoruichi agreed. “I feel like something dangerous is coming.”
Kisuke nodded.
“Ichigo will be leaving soon,” she said minutes later.
“I know,” he said as he finished his work. Picking it up, he and Yoruichi went to the throne room, where everyone else had gathered.
They came into the middle of an argument between Grimmjow, Nel, and Lilynette about who would go and who would stay.
Ichigo just watched in amusement, having already decided their roster.
“You’re a chaos gremlin, aren’t you?” Kisuke asked as he chuckled.
Ichigo smirked, but remained quiet.
“Here, I made these for you,” Kisuke said as he held out some garments that he’d made.
“Oh?” Ichigo accepted the bundle of clothes.
“I’m good at making clothes, and you’re going to meet with the Soutaicho today. I wanted you to look good,” Kisuke admitted.
“I’m sure I’ll look dashing,” Ichigo said as he stood up. No one noticed when he left, but his return caught everyone’s attention.
He wore a sleeveless black shitage with a sleeveless white shihakusho and hakama, with an orange obi. His sleeveless haori was black with his emblem on the back in red, with a matching red boarder on everything.
Kisuke came over and checked the fit of everything. “The black and white are opposite the Shinigami’s highlighting your opposite natures. The bits of color in the obi and hems emphasize your own uniqueness. And, leaving your arms bare showcases your fitness. And, altogether, the look makes you look badass,” Kisuke said with a smirk. “The black shows off your white skin and Hollow hole beautifully. But, most importantly is how reinforced the material is. It’s something I made special, and is more protective than chainmail.”
“I like it,” Ichigo said. Getting clothes that could resist the harsh winds and sands of Hueco Mundo were difficult, and he often wore ragged clothes because of that.
“Ya look more like a warrior king than th’ mostly chill king ya really are,” Shinji chuckled.
“You calling me soft?” Ichigo asked.
“Would I do that? Never,” Shinji retorted sarcastically.
“I’m surrounded by smartasses,” Ichigo snarked as he sat upon his throne.
“I learned it from ya, Dad,” Shinji replied. “Ya were a smartass even when ya couldn’t talk.”
“I had to be, to put up with you,” Ichigo retorted. “Now, enough of playing around, it’s time to get serious. It’s time to meet the Soutaicho. Those going with me are: Harribel. Ulquiorra, Nelliel, and Shinji.”
“Wait, me?” Shinji exclaimed.
“You are the leader of the Vizards, and a representative for them. And, as a former Shinigami Taicho you know our opponents nearly as well as I do. Besides,” Ichigo smiled wickedly, “I want to throw them off their game right from the get-go.”
Grimmjow snickered. “Yer pissed an’ wanna rub their noses in their losses.”
“Yeah, I’m pissed,” Ichigo agreed. “I warned the Soutaicho that there was a traitor in their midst, and he didn’t listen. He probably accepted Kisuke as the traitor and stopped looking into it as soon as he could. As soon as Central 46 made their judgement, he just accepted it and moved on. I’m disappointed,” Ichigo snarled. “Now that the Vizards are part Hollow, they’re under MY jurisdiction. They can’t demand I send you back.”
“What if they demand you send US back?” Tessai asked.
“Over my undead body,” Ichigo growled. “They exiled you, so you can live where you damn well please, as long as it’s not in Soul Society.”
“That could work,” Kisuke agreed.
“If not, then we’ll have to take drastic measures,” Ichigo replied.
“And what would those be?” Kisuke wondered.
Ichigo stood up and strode over. “Join our ranks. Aizen’s not the only one with a Hogyoku, right?”
Kisuke looked curious. “I never thought you’d actually suggest that.”
“Which means you already thought of that,” Ichigo noted.
“Of course I did. I’m a planner and a schemer. I have more plans than you have rooms in Las Noches,” Kisuke retorted with a smirk.
“And that’s why YOU are not coming with me,” Ichigo said and whispered something in his ear. Plans that no one would expect.
Kisuke’s eyebrows rose and he chuckled. “And here I thought I was a schemer. I have nothing on you, Ichigo.”
Ichigo smirked. “Now, to finish getting ready.” Out of nowhere, a white substance formed in the air in front of Ichigo’s face. Like with the Vizards it settled into place, forming a bone crown upon his brow. The eye under his stigmata was golden swimming in a pitch-black sea, while the other was his usual golden-brown.
Kisuke had to fight off a wave of pure want. Ichigo looked so Hollow so suddenly that Kisuke was instantly aroused. And, by the way Ichigo looked at him, he knew exactly what he was doing to him.
“Now, let’s go play with some Shinigami,” Ichigo cheered, his voice suddenly two-toned (deep and reverberating, as if there were two of them speaking).
Ichigo opened the Garganta. Ulquiorra and Nel were the first ones in, followed by Ichigo in the middle, and Harribel and Shinji bringing up the rear.
They entered the clearing at the same time as two other gates formed. One was the Shinigami’s Senkaimon, while the other was similar, but much more elaborate.
Ginrei led the way out of the Shinigami’s gate, followed by Ukitake, Kyouraku, and Soi-Fon, with Yamamoto bringing up the rear.
Out of the other gate, two old Souls came out. Ichibei and Oetsu.
“Thank you all for coming,” Ichigo said as his people formed a line behind him. He looked at the Shinigami. “For those of you who don’t know, I am the Hollow King, The Lizard, Ichigo White. Behind me are my royal guards: Ulquiorra Cifer, Tiel Harribel, Nelliel Tu Odelschwank, and Hirako Shinji.”
He held in his smirk when he saw the looks a few of the Shinigami gave Shinji (and noting Ukitake’s and Shunsui’s relieved smile).
Yamamoto had straightened at the sight at the appearance of the Zero Division. He showed no change of expression upon seeing Shinji.
“I am Yamamoto Genryusai, Soutaicho of the Gotei 13. Behind me are Kuchiki Ginrei, Ukitake Juushiro, Kyouraku Shunsui, and Soi-Fon.”
The last to speak were the last two.
“I am the head of the Zero Division, Head of the Royal Guard to the Soul King, and a Mediator. Call me Monk,” Ichibei said as he smiled and crossed his large arms.
“I’m the Swordsmith, of the Zero Division, and Royal Guard to the Soul King. Call me Nimaiya Oetsu.” He smiled jauntily and saluted them.
“I requested the Zero Division mediate this meeting, as specified in the Peace Treaty of 1292. Though it was signed by a different Hollow King, the Peace Treaty hasn’t been broken since its signing and is still a valid agreement between our two forces,” Ichigo explained.
Yamamoto nodded. “I remember that Treaty, and agree to abide by its terms.”
“There aren’t many who agree with that old Treaty, and we’re glad to act in a way that enables peace between the worlds,” Ichibei said. “Representatives will be the only ones allowed to speak, unless both sides agree that a non-representative can speak. No one on any side is allowed to act aggressively or I, as the mediator, will handle you personally. There will be lo lying, by either side, nor by Oetsu-Dono, or myself. As the one who called this meeting, The Hollow King will be the first to speak. The Soutaicho, or representing Shinigami will be allowed to speak after that. Now, representatives step up.”
They stood in a square. To Ichigo’s left stood Ichibei, to his right stood Oetsu, and Yamamoto stood across from him.
“White-O, you called this meeting. Speak your piece,” Ichibei instructed.
“There are several issues I would like to bring up,” Ichigo started. “First off, many years ago I warned Yamamoto-Soutaicho that he had a traitor in his midst that was causing trouble in Hueco Mundo. I warned the Soutaicho that if the traitor wasn’t handle, I would take care of him myself. And, no, the traitor was not Urahara Kisuke or Tsukabishi Tessai, as falsely condemned by your Central 46.”
“Who, exactly, is the traitor?” Yamamoto asked. “Had you told me before, this may have been preventable.”
“Oh, sorry, was I supposed to do YOUR job?” Ichigo shot back. Then he sighed. “Your traitor is Aizen Sousuke, who has an illusion-type Zanpakuto.”
“No, Aizen-Taicho has a water-type Zanpakuto,” Yamamoto contradicted.
“Oetsu-Dono, you are the creator of all Asauchi’s. What do you have to say about this?” Ichigo asked.
“Aizen Sousuke’s Zanpakuto, Kyouka Suigetsu, is an illusion-type Zanpakuto, and has a complete hypnosis ability,” Oetsu answered, sounding amused.
Flooring the Shinigami.
“Aizen’s likely got your precious Central hypnotized,” Ichigo scoffed.
In the background, Kyouraku placed a hand over his mouth, as if to stop himself from saying something.
“Something you would like to say, Kyouraku-Taicho?” Ichigo asked.
Kyouraku looked at Yamamoto, who nodded,
“Kyouraku Shunsui had been allowed to speak,” Ichibei stated.
Having permission, he spoke up. “Central 46’s condemnation of Urahara Kisuke, Tsukabishi Tessai, Hirako Shinji, and the others was a rather hasty ruling. Usually there’s some time between the arrest and the sentencing. This allows for evidence to be properly collected, testimonies given, possible appeals if they have a noble backer, and time for the guilty to repent in the White Tower. But, Urahara-San and Tsukabishi-San were arrested and sentenced very early, with no time given for proper processing. They, and those who were Hollowfied, were already sentenced and had escaped before we even heard they’d been taken into custody. A few of us were trying to protest, saying that the proper procedure wasn’t followed, but Central 46 stated that if we continued to protest, then we, too, would be considered traitor. I… got the feeling they wanted me to escalate it, so I backed off. I’m sorry,” he said, bowing to Shinji.
Shinji nodded back. They hadn’t been abandoned as they’d thought. That would comfort the others, especially Lisa, who had been fond of Shunsui.
“That is disheartening,” Ichibei mused.
“I agree. It sounds like Aizen has made some dangerous moves,” Oetsu agreed.
“My apologies. It seems like I let a nasty Rat into the nest,” Yamamoto said. “I’ll take care of it once I’ve returned.”
“See that you do,” Ichigo said. "Though, if he flees into Hueco Mundo, he’s dead. That’s a promise. I’ll make sure his Soul in never able to enter the cycle of reincarnation ever again.”
“Ara, ara, that sounds personal, Go-Ichi-Kun,” Oetsu realized.
Ichigo nodded seriously; his arms crossed. He has had a lot of issues with Aizen; from future to current events. But, worst of all was, “Even Hell is too good for him. He messed with my son, and I’ll make sure he pays for that.”
Every Non-Hollow looked completely discombobulated with that.
“S-son?” Ichibei echoed uncertainly.
“Yeah. He’s not biologically mine, but I took him in as a little boy and cared for him. Even as a Hollow, I’m a protector. My name ISN’T for show. I will protect all who are mine to protect. Aizen had messed with Hueco Mundo, and as the King it’s my duty to stop him. But, it’s personal because he messed with my son,” Ichigo declared, head nodding seriously.
The Hollows behind him were laughing at Shinji (even Ulquiorra had a small smile), while the blond remained composed.
Ichibei relaxed with an inner sigh. The thought of Ichigo having a son – a son who would share his unique… make-up – was terrifying.
Before anyone else could say anything, a Garganta opened behind the Hollows.
Ichigo slowly turned around to glare at the interloper. “Shawlong Kufang, you are interrupting a very important meeting. You best have a damn good reason for coming, or I’ll kill you personally.”
Shawlong was kneeling before Ichigo even finished his name, and waited for permission to speak. “My apologies, my King. Coyote-Sama sent me to inform you that Las Noches has come under attack.”
“Who is it?” Ichigo growled.
“It is the false king and his followers,” Shawlong answered. “They attacked in droves not even ten minutes after you left.”
Ichigo thought for a second. “Nelliel, Shinji, I want you two to join the defense. Go with plan 13.B, if it looks right. Harribel, Ulquiorra, join the offense with plan 8.C. Allow Grimmjow to join the offense, if he already hasn’t.”
“Yes, at once,” the four answered, bowing to Ichigo before leaving through the Garganta Shawlong came out of.
Once they were gone, Ichigo bowed, first to Ichibei and Oetsu, then to Yamamoto. “My apologies for the interruption.”
“You don’t need to go yourself?” Yamamoto asked.
“Not yet,” Ichigo denied. “Harribel and Ulquiorra are better strategists than I am. And with both Starrk and Ulquiorra in Las Noches, it won’t fall easily. There’s another issue I brought you all here to discuss, something far more dangerous than Aizen. Stopping now to reschedule at a later date would be troublesome, and likely what the enemy wants us to do.”
“You have my attention,” Yamamoto said. He was tense, wondering what could be more dangerous than an enemy that can completely hypnotize you.
“I’ve detected Quincy energy in both Soul Society and Hueco Mundo,” Ichigo stated.
“You sure ‘bout that?” Oetsu asked.
“Yeah, and they seem to be able to hide in the shadows themselves,” Ichigo answered.
“Hence the reason we’re in the Living world on top of a bright hill,” Yamamoto noticed.
“Correct,” Ichigo nodded. “The power we sense is strong, and we believe it would belong to an extremely powerful Quincy, a group of powerful Quincy, or both. Either way, it’s suspicious that they’re there.”
“Agreed. I’ll handle this personally,” Ichibei agreed.
Ichigo nodded and Yamamoto bowed.
“If it’s something that poses a threat to the Soul King, I’ll help out,” Ichigo promised.
“Why are you so willing to help?” Yamamoto asked suspiciously.
“Those of us that have become Arrancar aren’t like most Hollows. We’re not the kind that blindly eats everything we come into contact with. We’re capable of thinking and reasoning, though we trust our instincts more than anything else. We don’t feel the hunger other Hollows feel.
“Once I became the Hollow King, I was filled with knowledge from Hueco Mundo itself. I know how important the Soul King is to the balance of all three worlds. I know if the Soul King falls, it will lead to the destruction of all three worlds. If we can work together – Hollow and Soul, then we can stop the destruction. THAT is why I’m willing to help. Both with Aizen, and the Quincy’s,” Ichigo answered solemnly.
And, if the Soul King falls, then Ichigo would have to become the next Soul King, and he REALLY didn’t want that to happen.
Yamamoto nodded. “I see.”
“Is there anything you need to discuss with me?” Ichigo asked, bracing himself.
“You’ve addressed most of them,” Yamamoto said. Though he was a Hollow, he got the feeling that Ichigo didn’t see them as an enemy, even back when he first broke into his office. That was explained by Ichigo’s answers today. “But, I do have one question.”
“Well, don’t hesitate on my account,” Ichigo retorted.
“Are you related to the Shiba’s in any way, shape, or form?” Yamamoto asked.
Which is NOT what Ichigo was expecting him to ask. He wryly smiled and agreed, “Yes, my father was a Shiba. However, I wasn’t raised a Shiba, and had my mother’s last name. Mom was killed by a Hollow when I was a child, and Old Goat Face was a bit of an absentee father after that. But, that’s all in my past,” Ichigo shrugged.
Yamamoto nodded, pleased he got an answer to something that was bothering him. Now, if only he could understand why Ichibei and Oetsu were amused by that…
“Well, if there’s nothing else?” When they shook their heads, he nodded, “Good. I’ve got a rebellion to put down. See ya,” Ichigo gave a carefree wave as he walked away.
Ichigo didn’t care what they did. Either they killed Aizen, or he did. Either they killed Yhwach, or he did. Either they worked together, or they didn’t. Ichigo could handle both enemies, with or without help.
He arrived in Las Noches with his Reiryoku held tightly to his chest, not giving the enemy the information that he was there. He could feel each wall was guarded by a force of both Hollow, Vizard, and/or Soul. Ulquiorra, Shinji, and Tessai guarded the North wall (one on the ground, the other in the air, and the last creating a barrier); Grimmjow and Kensei were at the South wall; Harribel, Yoruichi, and Hiyori guarded the East; leaving the West gate to be guarded by Nel, Urahara, and Love. The others, along with the Fraccion, were fighting where they were needed.
Starrk and Lilynette were the last two Arrancar, and they were guarding the throne room, each on standing in front of and to the sides of the throne.
“Welcome back, Ichigo-O-Sama,” they said in unison.
“What’s going on?” He asked as he sat in his throne.
“It’s a full-on assault,” Starrk answered. “They came out of nowhere very quickly. If you had not warned Urahara about the possibility, we would have been woefully unprepared."
“Hah. I knew the bait would be too much for him to resist,” Ichigo smirked. “Is HE out there?”
“Yeah, he out there, hiding behind everyone like a coward,” Lilynette scoffed. “If he’d of attacked with everyone else, we might have had casualties.”
“Good. Don’t tell anyone I’m back,” he said, pulling on a cloak he’d kept near the throne for this exact possibility. With the white cloak, he’d blend right into the scenery.
Starrk and Lilynette smirked. “Happy Hunting,” they said together.
Ichigo left Hueco Mundo via a hidden passage – one that took him outside and to the East. It was easy to sneak past both ally and enemy, until he saw what he wanted.
Hidden well behind enemy lines was Aizen, Tosen, and Gin. None of whom had their guard up.
Aizen stood in the middle, glasses off and hair pulled back, as he surveyed the battle. Tosen stood to his right, looking towards the castle. They’d learned early on that Tosen had some trouble sensing his surroundings upon the sand. Were he in the castle, on solid ground, he’d be fine, but the ever-shifting granules of sand bothered him. Maybe, in the future, he’d have gotten the hang of it, but this Tosen struggled.
Gin stood to Aizen’s left, closest to his heart. He was both daring Gin to try and kill him, and simultaneously telling him that it wasn’t worth being on guard against the boy. Gin appeared to watch the battle (his narrow eyes making it difficult to determine where he was looking) while keeping his eyes on Aizen for weaknesses that weren’t there.
Ichigo smirked as he watched them. Zangetsu (extremely eager to be drawn) was silently drawn from his sheath (a nifty trick he’d learned from Yoruichi centuries ago). ‘Ready?’ He asked his other halves. Feeling acceptance and eagerness, he pounced.
All three Souls turned his way once he flared his Reiatsu. Then Gin, far too young and inexperienced to guard against his Reiatsu, dropped. Both adults drew their swords, startled at having him suddenly beside them (and he meant right beside them, as Gin’s head landed not even five feet from his foot).
Tosen attacked first, and Ichigo easily decapitated him.
“Greetings, Aizen Sousuke. Welcome to Las Noches, your final resting place,” Ichigo said.
“You,” Aizen growled, seeing his orange hair and knowing exactly who he was. He hadn’t expected to see him with his head down as he appeared to look at his kill. “So, the king has appeared. Must you resort to petty tricks? Had I known you were here, I would have greeted you,” Aizen taunted as he silently activate Kyouka Suigetsu’s ability.
“What, you expect me to fight like a Shinigami?” Ichigo laughed. “I wanna play with my toys before I break them.”
Neither one moved, much to Aizen’s confusion.
“Awe, you’re little mind show not working?” Ichigo taunted.
In retrospect, Aizen’s never failed to hypnotize anyone with working eyes (Tosen didn’t count), so he was expecting Kyouka Suigetsu to work. Until Ichigo looked up and Aizen could see that his eyes were closed,
“Ya see, in Hueco Mundo, some of us Hollows don’t need our sight to detect prey. We sense their Reiatsu through the sand itself. Naturally that means I don’t have to look at you to fight you,” Ichigo explained.
“Who taught you about Kyouka Suigetsu?” Aizen demanded.
“Hm? You did, of course, Sousuke-Chan,” Ichigo retorted, stepping forward.
“Impossible. I’ve never told ANYONE, not even Tosen, about my powers,” Aizen denied, raising his sword.
Ichigo chuckled as he surged forward, grabbing that blade bare-handed. “Sure ya did. Ya even told me about the safety feature, where grabbing the blade negates the ability,” Ichigo said as he opened his eyes. He felt Aizen’s panic and fear, and it was tasty. He didn’t need to know that it was a future version of himself that had taunted him with the knowledge, it was more fun this way.
Desperate, Aizen tried to use Kido, but as soon as he moved his hand, Ichigo cut it off, quickly and efficiently. Aizen screamed loudly over the sudden silence.
“Too bad, Aizen. You’re a hundred years too early for me,” Ichigo taunted with a wicked smile. He pushed Aizen back until he fell, and he sat upon his chest. “But, don’t worry, Aizen, you won’t technically die here.” He pulled the writhing man’s Hogyoku out of its hiding spot. “You’ll rest in here for all eternity.”
“You – you – HOW DARE YOU!” Aizen shouted, until Ichigo shoved it in his mouth.
“You bore me,” Ichigo said, his cold golden eyes looking down at him. The man that had caused so much trouble and sent Hell out of balance sat beneath him, fearful and crying from the pain and humiliation. Making the Hogyoku absorb his Soul was easy.
With nothing left but an empty vessel and an empty sword, Aizen as an individual ceased to exist.
Ichigo sealed the Hogyoku (something Getaboshi had taught him) and tucked it away. With another swipe of his sword, he removed Aizen’s head from its body, picked it up, along with the two Zanpakutos. He placed the empty blades in the other side of his obi, opposite Zangetsu, who wasn’t happy.
‘Relax, I need my hands open to carry the brat,’ he told them.
They accepted that as Ichigo picked up the boy. With a reluctant sigh, he added Tosen’s head to the load, and headed for home.
When he returned to Las Noches, it was to find his Pack victorious and all of Aizen’s allies dead.
“Welcome back, Ichigo-Sama,” Ulquiorra bowed.
“Thanks. Tonight, we party,” Ichigo cheered.
He presented Aizen’s and Tosen's heads to Shinji. Shinji smirked and obliterated them. “Wouldn’t want anyone ta get sick by tryin’ ta eat that.”
The Hollows and Vizards were amused.
“Oh, Ichi’s picked up another little boy,” Nel noticed with a teasing smirk.
“Looks like ya have a little brother now,” Grimmjow laughed as he patted (pounded) Shinji’s back.
“Did ya have ta bring th’ brat back?” Shinji asked.
“Eh, I have a soft spot for kids,” Ichigo shrugged. “Besides, I don’t think he was as loyal to Aizen as everyone thinks.”
“If ya say so,” Shinji shrugged. “Aizen bein’ dead is good enough f’r me.”
“Oh, he’s technically not dead. He’s in here,” Ichigo said, holding up the Hogyoku.
“Yer so wicked,” Shinji smirked.
“What?” Ichigo asked, falsely innocent. “He loved his precious Hogyoku so much, and now he’ll be a part of it forever.”
The other Vizards were smirking, too, as Kisuke gave him a look*.
They partied that night, enjoying the food and booze.
Gin eventually woke up in a tower to see a plate of food and a note that said he was a prisoner and not to even try escaping. Shrugging he ate what he thought to be his last meal.
The next day, it was Nel who brought the boy to Ichigo’s throne room.
Gin looked at Ichigo, then at the Vizards. “Ya can kill me. Aizen’s dead, so I have no regrets.”
Ichigo’s eyebrows rose as each Vizard’s jaw dropped.
“What about Rangiku?” Ichigo asked.
“She has friends amongst th’ Shinigami. She’ll get over me,” Gin said with full confidence.
“I doubt it,” Ichigo replied. Rangiku had died with Gin’s name upon her lips, wishing she would end up where he was, even knowing that would make her an ally of Hell and an enemy of Soul Society.
Gin tilted his head in confusion.
“Tell me, why were you with Aizen?” Ichigo asked.
“I wanted to get back what he stole from Rangiku,” Gin replied.
“What did he steel?” Ichigo asked.
“A part o’ her Soul,” Gin replied.
“Ah, I understand,” Ichigo said. “It’s probably in here,” he held up the Hogyoku.
“Then, can Rangiku have her Soul piece back?” Gin wondered.
“Actually, I don’t think it was her Soul that he took,” Ichigo said. “If he had, she would have died. What he took was probably a piece of the Soul King’s Soul that was hidden in her Soul.”
“Then… she’s okay? She looked so broken when they took that from her, an’ she… she…” Gin’s words trailed off.
“She’ll be fine,” Ichigo assured him. “Better once I return you to Soul Society.”
“Eh? But, I’m yer enemy,” Gin protested. “I-”
“Ya worked ta protect yer friend,” Shinji interrupted. “While I ain’t happy, nothin’ can be done ‘bout it. Besides, I like Las Noches more than I do Soul Society,” he finished with a smile.
Gin looked at him, confused.
“I f’rgive ya, Gin,” Shinji said.
“Same here,” Mashiro said.
“Me, too,” Rose smiled.
“Same. Just don’t do any more stupid shit,” Hiyori snarled.
The others nodded.
“Gin,” Ichigo spoke the boy’s name seriously, making him look at Ichigo. “There’s danger coming to Soul Society, and to Rangiku. You need to get stronger so you can protect them both.”
Gin’s chin lifted and he stared at Ichigo with his blue eyes. “I promise I’ll get stronger. An’ if ya ever need my help, let me know. I owe ya.”
“Okay,” Ichigo nodded. “Now, go home.”
Gin nodded as he followed Nel through a Garganta. He saw the blue sky and green forests of Soul Society, realizing this was his second chance.
“Take care, little cub,” Nel said before closing the Garganta.
In the throne room, once she got back, Ichigo looked at the three Souls before him. “This is your last chance to become a Vizard.”
“What do you mean?” Kisuke asked.
“The Hogyoku’s are an important piece of the puzzle. After today, they’ll be sealed permanently, where they can’t do any more harm. I won’t be able to use them after they’ve been sealed, nor will I allow another to be made,” Ichigo vowed.
The three Souls felt the weight of his vow.
“I’ve already decided,” Kisuke stated. “I can’t think of anything I want more.”
Ichigo smiled at him, then turned to the other two. “Neither of you have to, either. Tessai, you’ll always be welcome here. Yoruichi, if you want, you can always return home. You were never seen with the Vizards, and the Zero Division has agreed to cover for you. Either way, you’re both Pack.”
Tessai spoke up first. “Because I used the forbidden Kido, I cannot use Kido as well as I once did. As such, I have no reason to return to Soul Society. I also don’t want to give Soul Society any reason to cause you trouble over me. So, I would like to stay here, as a Vizard.”
Ichigo nodded, accepting him.
Yoruichi, on the other hand, hesitated. “I’d like to discuss something with you.”
“I’m listening,” Ichigo replied.
With a smirk, she explained her plans. Plans Ichigo accepted with a smile.
Kisuke became a spider Vizard, and Tessai became a frilled lizard Vizard. Shinji and Ichigo helped the two learn to control their new powers.
Ichibei arrived in Soul Society with Yoruichi by his side, saying she had been on an important mission for him – a mission he couldn’t tell anyone about.
Soi-Fon sighed in relief, and immediately offered her back her old position, but Yoruichi refused. Instead, with Ichibei’s approval, she became the ambassador to Hueco Mundo.
There was a huge ceremony where Ichigo and Yamamoto had to sign a new treaty, with Ichibei as witness. Ichigo even presented the empty swords of the former Shinigami he’d killed. Yoruichi was accepted as Soul Society’s ambassador, and Lisa was chosen to be Las Noches’ ambassador (as soon as he could, Shunsui gave her a hug, then stepped aside so Nanao could see her ‘big sis’ again).
Kisuke was officially Ichigo’s consort, and stood beside him during the ceremony.
Once they could, the Hollows left Soul Society, settling in at Las Noches.
Atop their tower, Ichigo lay with his head on Kisuke’s lap. He still had to take care of Yhwach, but they had time for that.
For now, he enjoyed the sight of the moon with his mate beside him.
Notes:
Thank you for reading, I appreciate all of your support. Any Kudos, comments, or critiques are welcome.
At first, Ichigo was going to storm Soul Society and kill Aizen. But, I had to write out an actual plot because they'll need to work together to fight Yhwach. Eventually. I probably won't write that, but you can imagine it, if you want.
Fun fact: many lizards are able to sense vibrations in the ground/sand, helping them to see their prey.
Lol, Ichigo's playing with his food. Not that he'd ever think to eat Aizen, no that would be disgusting.
Let me know what y'all thought in the comments below.
