Your Arms Are My Cocoon

Summary:

“What have you done?”

Azure could hardly speak, a breathy noise left their throat, lungs struggling to push out air to vocalize his own voice. His eyes were flooded with tears, hands weakly gripping Two Time’s sleeveless shirt.

They could only stare as the life was draining from Azure’s eyes.

A recollection of events leading up to the best day, and inevitably, the worst day of Two Time’s life.

Notes:

hi this is my second time writing don’t flame me too hard

Before we start:

My personal interpretation of the Spawn Cult is that they all live in a commune in the woods and are disconnected from modern society.

No members realize or acknowledge it’s a cult either, since irl cults don’t so y’know.

Chapter 1: Accompany me, will you?

Chapter Text

Two Time felt like an empty husk.

Their head buzzed terribly, a sensation similar to static filling their brain as they shuffled their feet through the verdant grass. They had a slight idea where they were going, though their lack of focus and direction made the commune’s greenery look the same.

They had attended another small ritual under the guidance of their revered teacher, a rather large and thick laceration now on their upper bicep. The blood that had previously dribbled down their arm when the cut was first made had dried and crusted over, leaving the fresh wound to seep into the small towel they were currently pressing against it.

They mentally chastised themselves, making a mental note to not cut so deep next time around, but they knew they’d probably end up doing it again anyway.

They just couldn’t help themselves when Amarah, their guidance, passed the sharp blade into their scarred, pale hands. Each time, Two Time swore they could hear what they believed to be the voice of Spawn, gently speaking to them in a hushed tone to devote themselves further to him.

It was a dangerous cocktail of self-hatred and commitment. Not a day went by where Two Time didn’t curse the body they were given, the rituals were just all the more reason to drive the alluring dagger into their pale and ugly skin. The vessel they begrudgingly harbored however, served a purpose: a purpose to be faithful, to exemplify their admiration to everyone around them, to be of use to the god who blessed them with each passing day. Everyday still felt like a losing battle despite all this.

Two Time shook their head, not wanting to dwell on what they were told to not fret about by their superiors.

They finally turned their attention away from the grassy plain that was underneath their feet shaking off their small moment of disassociation, all commune buildings a short distance away from where they were now. Two Time pressed the small cloth closer to their open wound, thin fabric now drenched in crimson. They at least knew they were close to where Azure could usually be found.

Two Time was an expert at administering first aid by now, but they preferred when someone else did it, the process feeling less daunting and more light. Azure also didn’t give them long-winded lectures on how they should be able to patch themselves up

As if spoken into existence, Two Time’s eyes had landed on a rather large tree, a familiar silhouette occupying the shady spot the tree provided.

They watched Azure for a moment, seeing the other hide under his oversized brown hat. Two Time couldn’t help but crack a faint, genuine smile at the scene, different from the one they usually had on their face. Azure’s back was pressed against the rough bark, knees raised while their gaze was absorbed in a book. They could see the various small satchels he wore were stuffed with various flowers, herbs, and other necessities, more than likely resting after scavenging for their community.

It was a common occurrence for Two Time to come to the other with a cut, Azure being known for carrying bandages on him. He always ended up accidentally nicking himself when traversing through the thick shrubbery that surrounded the cult grounds.

Two Time took a deep breath, taking a few quiet steps forward before stopping a few feet away from Azure.

This, of course, caught his attention, looking up from their book to see who came out all the way to see him.

Two Time?” Azure questioned, eyes lighting up with fond recognition.

“Hi.” Two Time said blankly, their easy smile fading. They didn’t have to pretend and be formal when they were with him.

Azure was about to open their mouth to ask what they were doing here, though his gaze had already fallen on the bloody cloth that Two Time was pressing against their upper arm, now starting to bleed into and stain their black sleeveless shirt. Azure patted the patch of grass next to him.

Two Time silently obeyed, taking a couple steps closer before they planted themselves on the ground next to their friend, keeping an appropriate space between them.

Azure quietly closed the book they were reading, removing it from their lap and placing it on the other side of him. He fiddled with one of the satchels on his belt, fishing out a roll of gauze. Azure knew this wasn’t the ideal setting for cleaning up wounds, but they knew Two Time was more than capable of handling it on their own later, or so they hoped.

Two Time then raised their injured arm, placing the sanguinary rag onto the grass below as they watched Azure methodically wrap their wound with the gauze. It blended in with the other dark bandages on their arms, nothing too out of the ordinary for potential nosy onlookers. They knew the gash would heal and become another scar on their marred body, adding to the already large amount of keloids and depressed scars on their body from previous rituals or accidents.

“You know…” Azure began, gaze not leaving Two Time’s arm. The strain in his voice was noticeable, enough to peak the other’s attention.

“Perhaps you should ease up on what Amarah tells you to do.” He said quietly, fearing the response he might get.

Azure knew how much Two Time valued their high ranking position, and the responsibility that came with it.

Just as Azure had dreaded, Two Time’s expression hardened.

“Excuse me?” They questioned with a slight hiss.
Azure sighed deeply, already seeing the other had taken his words of concern and interpreting them in a different way than he had meant. Two Time had already turned their head, glaring at him as they waited for some kind of refute.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.” He confessed.

“I suppose I just worry for you sometimes. I’m- ah… not trying to coddle you or anything of the sort. I don’t like seeing you… or anyone hurt is all.”

Azure then finished wrapping the gauze around Two Time’s arm, ripping the excess off with ease as he tightened the wrap one final time. The other winced slightly, the dull pain in their arm flaring up before returning to normal. Azure had already pocketed their dirty towel for them, more than likely to be thrown in the wash for later.

Two Time’s grimaced, realizing their tone might’ve been harsher than they originally anticipated. That was no way to treat a friend, especially another member of Spawn.

“Of course. My apologies. I suppose I’m still sensitive from… everything.” They said, referring to the ritual.

Azure nodded with understanding, placing the roll of gauze back into one of his pockets.

“It’s fine, I understand.”

The conversation then died, becoming slightly awkward as the two of them didn’t know what to say. Two Time silently reeled in regret for being so harsh initially, while Azure put his book back in his lap, unsure of what to say.

Two Time stood up from Azure’s side.

“Well, I should probably get going, thank you for your help… as always.”

Azure smiled gently, some sadness however, lingered in their gaze.

“You don’t want to stay?” He asked.

Two Time then looked back down at the other, surprised at the request. Usually their small disagreements with each other kept them away for a few hours at least. They couldn’t help but feel a little flattered that Azure was suggesting they stay. Now that they came to think of it, what would they do anyway if they went back over to the main area? Sitting with Azure sounded better than letting their loud, consuming thoughts drown them in their drab room.

“Now that you mention it…” Two Time sighed, plopping themselves back down.

Azure was pleased, cracking open his old book once again, pages crinkling as he flipped to the page with their book mark in it.

“Consider me lucky today.”

Two Time tilted their head.

“Why?”

Azure hummed.

“It feels like I never get to see you anymore, unless it’s at prayer, or just passing you by at random times.” He softly admitted.

Two Time could only exhale softly, knowing what the other was saying rang some truth. They were pretty busy these days, whether it was greeting new members, setting up events, or further devoting themselves to Spawn. Amarah would gladly keep them busy, and Two Time much preferred to be busy.

“I know…” They said with some resignation.

“I’ll make it up to you, somehow.”

Azure chuckled softly, moving a bit closer to Two Time.

“I’ll be holding you to that then.” Azure teased.
Two Time could only roll their eyes at the other’s snarky remark. Azure was really going all out on teasing them this afternoon, but they didn’t mind, and perhaps they deserved it.

“I can only imagine…” They mumbled, a soft smirk on their face to match Azure’s.

Two Time then peaked over at the book Azure clutched in their lap, managing to catch a glimpse of a few of the words on the page.

“May I ask what book that is? I don’t think I’ve seen that one in the library.” Two Time said, leaning in a bit closer.

Azure then looked conflicted, calloused hands closing the book ever so slightly as the brown sleeves of their religious robes covered the pages. Two Time couldn’t help but feel suspicious now of their friend’s behavior.

“What is it?” Two Time pressed.

“Nothing! I… er, just found it while cleaning around the library, and it looked interesting so…” Azure exposed the page once more, though their apprehension was still palpable.

Their eyes quickly skimming the page, Two Time realized the book was a fiction novel, a rare find in the cult’s archives. Two Time couldn’t recall reading a book like that since they were younger. Even then, almost all books were centered around Spawn in some way.

“What’s it about?” Two Time pressed.

Azure smiled shyly, nervousness lacing his energy.

“Well, I’m only half way through, but it’s really good! It’s about these two kids escaping an orphanage to go on their own adventure. It’s… pretty simple when it comes to the wordage. Still a good read.” He beamed.

Two Time knew it was wrong. No one in their community was supposed to be reading stuff like that, and Two Time could see why. If it wasn’t Spawn, then was it really worth their time…? Their curiosity couldn’t help but be aroused.

“Can we read it together?” They asked without missing a beat.

Azure’s grip on the book tightened, not expecting that from the other. Two Time was pretty big on respecting the rules and traditions.

He certainly wouldn’t turn the opportunity down however.

“I’d like that.”

Azure then shifted closer to Two Time, the both of them assuming the same position as each other before Azure placed the book between their laps.

“Would you like me to explain everything so far?” He asked.

Two Time nodded silently, now listening to Azure explain the plot of the novel up until the page they were now on. They were half listening, catching themselves paying attention to Azure themselves rather than what he was actually saying. He spoke with a lot of passion, something Azure only saved for those close to them. There were many moments where he rambled on without realizing, Two Time didn’t mind. It was endearing in an odd way to them.

Eugh. Don’t go thinking like that now.

“…Anything else you’d like me to explain?” He said as he finished his long plot summarization.
They shook their head.

“Okay! Just let me know when you wish to flip the page.” Azure then turned his attention back down to the wrinkled pages.

It became clear to Azure that Two Time was a quicker reader than him. Every time he asked if they were ready for him to turn the page, the answer was almost always yes, still, Two Time was unbothered with the pace they were reading at.

Two Time wasn’t sure how much time had slipped them by, and they frankly didn’t mind. A refreshing breeze took the place of the summer heat now as the once-bright backdrop transformed into a rich, vibrant orange.

Azure yawned as they finally looked up from the book, peering at the sun from behind their brown, choppy bangs and big hat.

“Tired?” Two Time asked lazily.

Azure shook his head, covering his mouth as he let out yet another short yawn.

“Only a little.” He murmured.

“We can stop if you’d like. I don’t mind.” Two Time flashed a gentle smile.

Azure thought for a moment before wedging their bookmark in the gutter and closing it.

“You sure? We were almost done.”

Two Time nodded their head. The both of them had been sitting against that tree for a while, which in return, made their lower back sore. They let out a low groan as they stood up to stretch, joints popping back into their places, as their spiked tail extended straight, Two Time suppressing a yawn.

A sharp voice then cut through the air, neither of them realizing someone had approached them.

Two Time?

Both Azure and Two Time snapped their heads to the new voice, seeing Amarah stand a few feet away from the oak tree. His well-worn, light blue cloak flicked lightly in the wind, the older man looming over the both of them.

Two Time straightened out, standing taller in the face of their superior. Azure discreetly placed their long sleeve back over the cover, remaining sat.

“Oh, greetings Amarah.” They greeted formally, restoring their usual easy smile.

“I’ve been looking for you everywhere. What are you two doing?” He pressed, gaze burning into the two members for answers.

“Me and Azure were…” Two Time looked back at Azure, contemplating.

Azure didn’t deserve to be chewed out, even if they were breaking the rules.

“…Azure was showing me some of the materials they managed to forage and their properties.” They replied unswervingly.

That seemed to satisfy Amarah, or perhaps he just didn’t care enough, not bothering to press any further.

“Delightful. Could you come with me? I need you to help introduce new family members to our community.”

Two Time nodded promptly.

“Of course, I shall be there right away.”

They then swiftly finished stretching, already making their way back to the main grounds.

Azure watched the other walk away wordlessly, not even bidding goodbye. It was disheartening considering the moment they shared not even a minute ago, but responsibility called, and it wasn’t something someone like Two Time could just ignore.
Amarah seemed pleased, though they glanced back at Azure who was still sitting against the tree. His scrutiny felt inescapable, and his stare felt anything but kind.

“Good day to you.” Amarah hummed, already sauntering away with Two Time.

Azure observed the two members walking away, eyes falling back down to their book. They got the feeling they might not get to finish the book with Two Time anytime soon, disappointment bubbling up once more. He tried to not be so down, glancing back up at the sun. The strange heaviness that Amarah seemed to bring with him still clung in the air, even after he had left.

Amarah always made Azure feel uneasy, and he couldn’t find the words to explain why.

Chapter Text

Two Time was attempting to smooth out the wrinkles in their black tank top, the hand-sewn Spawn symbol beginning to fray from being worn so often. They let out a sigh, flicking the loose white strings sullenly.

They were supposed to have left by now to go spend time with Azure like they had said a few days ago, some difficulty had emerged. Their head banged with a raging headache, and now they couldn’t decide on what to wear.

The whole situation earned a scoff, Two Time didn’t know why they cared so much in the first place. No matter what they did it didn’t matter, they’d be unsatisfied with something. There was always something.

Their fists clenched the fabric in their gloved hands, resisting the urge to tear it. This headache made their irritation more intense than ever.

A sigh escaped them. They really were overthinking this. Azure wasn’t the type of person to voice their opinion on others, why be so upset about it in the first place? Maybe they wanted to seem more put together than they truly were, but that was proving to be a failure.

Two Time let the shirt rest on their lap, falling back on their mattress. Their hands came up to massage their own head, combing through their black roots. Some minor relief flooded their head, soothing their festering ire. It definitely wasn’t enough however.

Two Time sat back up, slipping the shirt they held earlier over their head. The fabric draped over their thin frame, large enough to hide their imperfections while also showcasing their dedication to the cult.

Taking a deep breath, Two Time got up off their bed, traipsing through their home’s empty and barren hallways. They really needed to decorate sometime soon, though, they usually only went home to sleep or when they had nothing to do, so they didn’t find the need to.

They swung open the front door, shutting their eyes tightly as the sun assaulted their vision. A quiet groan left their lips, small after images dancing in their sight shortly before disappearing. They reopened their eyes as they started to walk again along the gravel pathway, making their way to Azure’s residence. The humid summer air coiled around them as soon as they opened the door, a small breeze helped alleviate the suffocating heat.

Two Time trailed along the dug paths of the commune grounds, a rock being occasionally kicked by their beaten-up shoes. They hoped it would get cooler as the day progressed, but they knew that thought in itself was wishful thinking.

A few members were lingering about along the way, most of them caught up in their own conversations, a few looking at them and waving at Two Time with a smile. They waved back, out of politeness of course. Treat thy neighbor with kindness as Amarah would say…

Two Time made it to the front steps of Azure’s house, being on the outskirts of their small town. The overgrown scenery encroaching on the house was very Azure fashion, a few flowering potted plants littering his front porch. A few vines were beginning to grow up the side of their house, small stems growing in the grains of the wood.

Their hand hovered by the door, taking a small breath as they put on their usual grin.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Two Time waited there for a moment, hearing some shuffling from behind the door before some footsteps were clearly approaching.

Azure opened the door, wearing their usual witchy hat, utility belts, and flowy brown robes, which also had the Spawn symbol etched into the front. Not to brag, but Azure had Two Time to thank for that little touch.

Azure’s face immediately brightened.

“You’re here!” He exclaimed, wrapping the other in a hug.

Two Time felt all their previous tension melt away, smile faltering from surprise.

Azure let them go from their strong embrace, sensing their shock.

“Oh, my apologies! May Spawn forgive me for not minding my manners. I just didn't expect you to show.”

Two Time shook off their initial reaction, a strange feeling in their chest.

“Of course, it’s… fine.” They scratched the back of their head, feeling awkward after the hug.
Azure then closed his front door behind them, walking past Two Time as they descended their porch steps.

“C’mon, let’s go!”

Two Time walked behind Azure, brushing past some of the small branches that occasionally blocked their way. Originally, Two Time thought it would be too hot to be comfortable outside, but the trees thankfully kept them out of the sun.

“Did your responsibilities wear you out for the day? You’re awfully slow.” Teased Azure, only slightly ahead of them.

Two Time let out a soft scoff.

“Ever consider you’re too eager?”

Azure let out a short laugh, only because it was true. Could the other really blame them though?
“That’s a possibility.” Azure hesitated at the end of his words.

“Though, I think spending time with a friend is a good reason to be eager.”

Two Time nodded slowly. The words made that same twisted feeling in their stomach come back, much like when Azure hugged them not too long ago. They let out an inaudible exhale, brushing off the feeling once more.

They both continued to travel together along the forest path, the tranquility and easy conversation putting Two Time’s previous tensions at ease. Small branches snapped satisfyingly underneath their shoes, faint crunches and rustling as they strolled.

Azure had then stopped, Two Time’s comically bumping into them from not paying attention. They didn’t say anything, rather peaking in front of Azure to see why they had suddenly halted instead.

They quickly saw why, taken by surprise at the nice scenery in front of them. The lush landscape that lay ahead made their pupils dilate. The vicinity was even more green than before somehow, a pond that was relatively clear enough that Two Time could see its inhabitants that swam inside it. They looked back at Azure, seeing if the other would say anything, which their stare did gauge a reaction from him.

“You.. like it?” Azure asked shyly, unsure of what to expect from them.

Two Time looked at them and then back at the area, words caught in their mouth. Azure deflated slightly, pushing their hat down to cover their face.

“I know coming all the way out here isn’t really your thing, but I-“

“I like it.” Two Time interrupted, tilting the brim of his hat upwards again for them.

“Right.” Azure whispered, turning away to hide the flush on their face before Two Time could see.
The other didn’t think much of it, taking the short break to explore the area. Two Time had to give it to Azure, this place was, Spawn forgive them, very divine. They knew the other had a lot of hobbies, exploration being one of them, but this was nice.

Two Time made their way over the pond, closing in on the edge as they crouched down to peer into it, being careful to not accidentally fall in.

Their eyes fell on some debris in the water, seeing a few small fish dart between rocks and thick sticks at the bottom of the pond. Anytime they saw a fish, they always thought about koi fish. Two Time had never seen one with their own eyes, only a mere concept within nonfiction books that Azure cared to show them, but they’d like to see one some day.

Two Time then tore their gaze away from the pond, attention falling back to Azure. They saw the other a few feet away looking at a bush that was full of vibrant purple flowers, a small yellow bud in the center of the plant.

“What’s that?” Two Time asked, walking right up behind him.

“Nightshades.” Azure replied promptly, his thumb carefully brushing over the petals.

Two Time hummed in reply, hovering next to Azure as they both gazed upon the bush, odd scent lingering around them.

“To eat?” Two Time questioned. They didn’t have a lot of knowledge on plants, but they did recall eating honey suckles when they were younger. They knew that not all flowers were like that, it was still worth asking.

“No, preferably not. These are poisonous. Whenever you crush them they leave this bad smell, kind of like a warning I suppose. Anyways, they’re not good for you. There’s also a variant called the ‘deadly nightshade,’ very self-explanatory.” Azure informed.
Two Time let out a quiet huff, Azure’s sheer knowledge pulling a smile on their lips.

Azure looked back, seeing their expression, leaving them confused.

“What?”

“Nothing. You seem to know a lot.” Two Time chuckled with slight amusement.

Those words made Azure break eye contact, embarrassment flooding back to him. He let go of the nightshade’s thin, hairy stems, a quiet awkward laugh leaving them.

“Mmm… sorry, sorry. I get carried a bit away sometimes.” Azure mumbled.

Two Time had known Azure for quite some time, his interest not a secret or anything to them. To still see the other get so flustered over their love for botany was nothing short of entertaining.

“It’s fine. I like learning new things.” Two Time stated.

Azure seemed to mellow out, but remained unsure of what to do with themselves.

Two Time took the opportunity to reach over, plucking a few nightshades from the bush and tucking the stem part underneath his hatband close to where his Spawn medallion laid. It was done on a whim to make Azure feel better, but it looked nice now that they looked at it.

“There. A token of my gratitude for teaching me.” Two Time then stepped back.

Azure still seemed stiff, but a smile mustered to their lips anyways.

“Thank you…” They mumbled, turning away similarly to how they did before. “Let’s continue, yes?” Azure asked, shuffling along over to the pond.

Two Time didn’t question his behavior, following.

The both of them leaned over the body of water, watching the life inside it propel along.

“Think we’d be able to catch a fish for dinner?” Azure asked innocently, watching a grey guppy whisk by.

“I don’t know if these fish are safe to eat, not to mention we don’t have anything to catch them with.” Two Time said with uncertainty.

Azure silently understood, Two Time crouching down and sticking their fingers in the cool water. The temperature made a shiver run up their arm, but they made no effort to pull away just yet. Azure saw this, a smile appearing on their face.

“How upset would you be if I pushed you in?” Azure joked.

That only earned a glare from Two Time, annoyance written all over their face.

“So Spawn help me if you do…” They warned.

Azure giggled, crouching down with them as they peered into the pond. The both of them watched the water silence, a small moment of peace in their busy lives.

Two Time looked up, seeing the sun in its early stages of setting.

“You think we could make it back in time for dinner?” They asked.

Azure made a humming noise, looking up at the sky and then back the way they had came.

“If we ran, then maybe.” Azure said.

Two Time then smirked gently, pulling their hand out of their pond and wiping the water on their dark pants. Azure could already see they had something devious planned in their mind, skepticism now etched in their expression

“Race?” Then asked, leaning into the other.

“A race? Do you know the way back?” Azure scoffed, equally playful as the other.

“I think you take me for a fool.” Two Time sighed, standing up from the pond.

“Besides, I-“ Azure stopped mid-sentence, watching Two Time bolt before they could even finish.

“H-hey! Two Time!” He called out, running off after them.

Two Time didn’t stop, their giggly laughter echoing throughout the trees. Azure was left nearly tripping over their own robes, rushing to catch up to them.

Chapter Text

Silver forks and spoons clinked against warm, ceramic plates as the quiet chatter of other members around filled the dining hall.

It smelt like baked bread, a small comfort compared to the cult’s usual activities. Not a lot of people came by to have lunch today, surprising all things considered. People carried their trays to their seats, the sound of their shoe soles lightly sticking to the floor, a result likely of someone’s rather lackluster mopping performance. Typical.

Both Two Time and Azure sat at a small table alone across from each other, only a couple of words having been exchanged due to the focus on their meals, well… Azure was at least.

Two Time lamely picked at their food, it was some type of meat, bread, and whatever vegetable. They never really had much of an appetite nowadays, they weren’t sure what had come over them, but the thought of eating right now sounded unbearable. Two Time felt bad for not eating, the guilt of Spawn blessing them with luxury only to reject because of… what? They didn’t want to? Anyone would’ve seen it as childish.

Azure gently clanked their fork against Two Time’s plate.

“Hey, are you still there?”

Two Time snapped out their daydream, blinking as they looked back up at Azure.

“Yes, my bad. Lost in thought once again.” They muttered.

“What are we thinking about?” Azure asked, making sure to be mindful of not talking with their mouth full.

Two Time couldn’t think of a good enough answer for that one, only giving the other a slightly uninterested shrug before mumbling, “What I’ll do after this.” It was the truth, even if their truth was terribly boring.

Azure took their elbows off the table, taking note of the reply.

“Well, you’re always welcome to come with me.” He smiled, chewing a forkful shortly after finishing his sentence.

“And sneak off to secret places hidden in the woods?” Two Time asked half jokingly, the thought pulling a smirk to their lips.

“Only if you want to.” He said casually.

Two Time’s gaze felt stuck as Azure answered them with a response like that. What in Spawn was wrong with him recently? He always had to say something so strange, and in return that made them feel strange. The worst part was that they weren’t sure if they liked it, or hated it!

“Is that so?” Two Time scoffed.

“Well, yeah. You’re always welcome to join me.” Azure said with a soft smile, words full of genuine likeliness.

They weren’t sure what to feel at this point.

“I’m afraid not then, I heard it’s supposed to rain in an hour or so.” Two Time sighed. Ever since their conversation by the tree, they hung out more, even if it was merely a couple more times than usual.

“Oh, come on. You won’t melt because of a little bit of rain.” Azure argued, voice becoming whiny.

It seemed like Azure always knew what to say, every mildly nice word he muttered was carefully woven into their conversations with such purpose. It was more than difficult to remain nonchalant about how Azure made them feel, Two Time resisting the urge to grab Azure by the shoulders and shake him till he stopped saying such things, permanently.

Two Time shook their head, a small sigh escaping their lips as they pushed their full plate away. “If I get sick, I’m not going to be very happy with you.”

Azure wasn’t completely finished with their food, but that was overshadowed by their newfound glee. He got up from their seat, stacking the plates and cups and whisking over to clean them off and return them to their respective places.

Two Time leaned back in their chair, seeing how eager Azure was did put a little smile on their face as much as they hated to admit it.

Azure came back not too long after, practically tugging Two Time out of their seat as they both shuffled their way over the exit doors with some laughter. A few members in the dining hall who were still sitting gave them a confused glance once they made their way out.

The pair immediately halted once they opened the door, seeing the rain had already begun falling.

“Aww, man.” Azure exhaled with some disappointment.

Two Time just watched the rain fall and kiss the dirt, light droplets gradually turning the ground a deeper color.

“We can walk home while it’s still a sprinkle.” They suggested.

Azure still looked disappointed, but they nodded anyway, stepping out from underneath the building’s awning. “I suppose. I’ll walk you home.”

The other was okay with that, both of them now trekked along the pathway to Two Time’s house, walking faster than usual to avoid being completely drenched. Two Time had a feeling they would be drenched anyway when they arrived back home.

Azure subtly glanced at Two Time, thinking back to what the other had said earlier about getting sick. He then got an idea. Azure took off their hat, sloppily placing it down on Two Time’s head in quick succession.

“Hey…” They mumbled, pulling the brim upward so they could see.

Azure giggled to himself. “What? You said you didn’t want to get sick.”

Two Time let out a huff, face warming up from the action. Readjusting the hat, it did keep them out of the sprinkle, but they couldn’t help but look back at Azure who was now getting rained on.

“What about you?” They asked, seeing the droplets beginning to mist the top of Azure’s head.

Azure made a ‘pshh’ noise, grin still on their face.

“I’ll be okay.”

Two Time still felt worried, but if Azure insisted he was okay, then they supposed they’d believe them for the time being.

The smell of wet earth and damp foliage filled the air, making their walk more bearable. The air was thick and humid, the summer season not helping their case to stay cool. Two Time figured they’d rather have warm rain compared to the rain that rolled around rarely in the fall.

They arrived at Two Time’s residency, taking the steps up and opening the door. They turned back around to Azure, tilting their head forward to take off the hat and handing it back.

“Thank you.” Two Time mumbled.

Azure nodded, his wet strands of brown hair stuck to his face. It was a silly sight, but Two Time liked that about Azure. There was a lot of things to like about-

Good Spawn, enough already.

“Perhaps I should invest in a bigger hat for the both of us next time?” Azure joked, chuckling at the scene in their own head.

They nodded in agreement, giggling with the other in a shared perspective. “Perhaps you shall.”

The rain then began to pick up slightly, starting to harshly beat down on the roof of Two Time’s estate, catching both of their attention. A look of worry crossed over their face, leaning on the door frame.

“You should come inside, I don’t want you out in the rain.” They warned, opening the door wider.

Azure looked conflicted before shuffling their feet backward in the dirt, shaking his head bashfully.

“No, it’s okay! I’ll manage.” Azure refuted immediately, suspicious in a way.

Two Time could see the nerves that lingered in the others body language, rolling their eyes. How dare he act so flustered when just a moment ago he seemed so calm while teasing them?

“Azure.” Two Time’s eyes narrowed, almost commanding the other to come inside.

“I’m being serious, it’s okay Times.” Azure expressed once again, already a few feet away from the door. Seemed like they were dead-set on fleeing.

Two Time didn’t seem pleased, they still caved however.

“Fine, just be safe, alright?” They huffed, door only slightly ajar now to avoid letting the humid air in their house. Sending Azure on his way seemed like a bad idea, but they knew he was stubborn when he had his mind set on something.

Azure looked relieved, waving the other off without another word before awkwardly speed-walking off back to their house presumably.

Two Time waves back before retreating back inside, closing the front door behind them.

They chewed the inside of their cheek, walking through the house before they made it to their barren living room, taking a seat on the beaten couch.

The only thing that was running through their mind was Azure. Every gesture, every word rang in their mind like a bell, every action carrying kindness and intent. They silently pondered if the other felt the same, the same thick, hefty guilt for enjoying their comfortable intimacy despite it being nothing more than just a simple friendship.

Two Time leaned back on the couch, staring at the wooden rafters on the ceiling. They were never good with things like this, let alone dealing with this awful, sinking feeling in their chest. It felt like they were being scrutinized from afar and beyond even if they were alone in their house right now.

They lurched forward, doing the only thing they knew how to do, pray.

Chapter Text

A range of footsteps echoed throughout the small temple, all belonging to a variety of members. Some old, young, a few children as well.

Two Time remained in their seat, a pew up at the utmost front near the altar. They couldn’t shake the focus that came with listening to whatever reverend or priest was up speaking. It didn’t matter who was preaching however, it was all about the message, and who they were preaching about, Spawn. It was everything they could ever imagine; powerful, inspiring, and well, gave them a sense of purpose in their otherwise dreary life.

They wouldn’t describe their life as terrible or anything like that, but it did feel spiraling, a slow suffocating cycle that they couldn’t escape from. The moments where they felt they broke that cycle is whenever Amarah requested them for a task, or Azure asked them to do something with him.

Their eyes gazed down at the metallic necklace that was clasped in their hands, symbol of Spawn warm from how tightly they were clutching it. Two Time swallowed hard, bringing up to the bridge of their nose and closing their eyes.

The guilt felt easier to manage whenever they sat in the temple, a silent confession in their mind that Spawn could soothe over with even the gentlest of signs. If Two Time listened close enough they could hear a loud, thumping heartbeat in their ears, surely another sign Spawn was near and always listening.

Someone then cleared their throat, Two Time feeling their presence right in front of them. Their eyes fluttered back open.

“Amarah..” They mumbled in a hushed voice, slightly taken aback seeing the older man.

He peered down at Two Time in the seat, his patience radiating off him, captivating aura making the other unable to look away. Not that they would anyway.

“Two Time… Pleasure to see you.” Amarah smiled, politely bowing his head, Two Time quick to do the same.

Amarah then casually sat down next to them, folding in his hands in his lap. Two Time took a moment to straighten back up, hazy stupor they had fallen in faded in the attendance of their superior.

A bit of an awkward silence seemed to follow after, Two Time unsure of what to discuss with the other. They mentally facepalmed, getting too comfortable and talking casually with Azure made them fail to recall how to have formal conversations with other peers in their community.

“Taking it all in still I presume?” Amarah spoke soothingly, referring to the sermon that had taken place.

Two Time nodded immediately, eager to free themselves from the silence of the temple. “Yes, yes. It never changes, no matter who goes up to speak.”

“Spawn is great, yes?”

Two Time would consider it stupid question to ask, because well… What kind of question was that? The answer was obvious. To say otherwise is foolish.

“Of course.” They replied without missing a beat.

Amarah hummed, turning his head to look at the altar. The Spawn symbol was neatly etched everywhere in the temple, from being ingrained in the wood to being woven into the fabrics of the banners that hung off the walls. It gave the message that Spawn was everywhere, omnipresent, just as the family would want.

“I’m afraid some would disagree.”

That sentence earned a small scoff from Two Time.

“May Spawn bless them then.” They said with some spite, those who didn’t believe in the Spawn were the ones missing out on his benevolence.

A short moment of quiet fell back over the two of them, the only sound Two Time could hear was their own breathing and that heartbeat in their ears from before. Being in the company of Spawn made them tense, nervous.

Amarah then spoke once again. “Say, how are things going with Azure and you? I’ve noticed you both are closer as of recently.”

Two Time felt the words die in their throat. They weren’t sure why, as everything between the both of them was strictly friendly, or at least they tried to think of it in that way.

That brought them to the current moment, was it better to ignore what was happening? They weren’t sure if Amarah was the person they should be telling this to, yet who else was there to tell?

“...”

“Things are well.” Two Time said quietly.

Amarah noticed the tension in their voice, tilting his head.

“Then what’s troubling you, child?” He spoke calmly, eyes not leaving the other’s figure.

Two Time didn’t want to lie completely to Amarah, as that wouldn’t be very kind. He taught them everything they knew. Though, to be thinking about Azure in the temple made them feel vulnerable, maybe even ashamed.

“It’s just…” Two Time could hardly begin before trailing off.

“Just..?” Amarah parroted.

“I’m having trouble with some things, and I feel like if I acknowledge those things… it’ll only make everything worse.” They confessed, mouth dry now.
Amarah looked at them in their seat, then back at the altar.

“You’re being very secretive about this.” He chuckled deeply, a smile on his lips.

Two Time felt their face warm up with embarrassment, fearing what they were talking about was painfully obvious.

“Well, I…”

Amarah shook their head, laughter dying shortly after.

“Don’t get shy now, it's normal to have secrets Two Time. If you want my best advice however, then I’d say confront whatever it is that's making you so nervous. They say fear is the very thing that can push us to act, which could lead to something you never knew you wanted.”

Two Time wasn’t sure what to make of that advice.

“I’ll.. keep that in mind.” They replied softly.

Amarah then stood up from his seat in the pew, attention back on the other as they smiled.

“Enough of that. Would you mind helping me for the day?”

Two Time silently agreed, standing up from their seat too now. They didn’t want to think about what they’d have to do in the future, if they even were going to follow through. They focused on following Amarah out from the temple and to wherever they were going now.

The pair stood in front of what was a lifeless house, reminding Two Time of their own residence. It was clearly abandoned, house number and residence name nowhere to be found.

Amarah walked past them, opening the front door as it wasn’t locked. They both marched inside the home, nearly empty. The only thing left that seemed to be present was a few pieces of furniture and personal items that must’ve been left behind.

“What are we doing here?” Two Time asked, walking into the kitchen.

“It came to my attention awhile ago that someone had made the decision to flee from our community.” Amarah said with some disappointment, keeping his gaze down.

Two Time’s grip on a glass they had picked up tightened, the likeness of something like that happening was almost impossible. Once someone was a part of their family, they should’ve never wanted to leave.

“I see.” They sighed, placing the glass back down on the counter.

“We’re here because we need to move the remaining stuff out of here. The furniture can stay, but everything else needs to go.”

They nodded diligently, the both of them taking a short break to split up the work respectively before getting on their tasks. There weren't too many things, so they figured it would only take an hour or so to get everything out.

Two Time found themselves in a bedroom after half an hour or so, sifting through drawers and looking through the closet for anything to toss. Dust blew into their face as they searched the drawers, the smell of must invading their airways as they held back a sneeze. The light that beamed from the window really emphasized the amount of particles that were swirling around them in the air.

They stopped as something caught their attention in the drawer, picking up an oddly shaped black box that sat in the back of the top drawer, a small slot on the bottom of it.

Two Time examined it, bemusement on their face as they got ready to throw it away.

Just as they were about to toss it, their hands roughly brushed over the front of it with carelessness, accidentally popping it open and nearly dropping it from surprise.

They hummed, interest now peaked.

Two Time looked it over, recognizing it was an instant camera, a rather old one at that.

They held the viewfinder up to their eye, index finger pressing down on the picture button, taking a picture of the window. They just wanted to make sure it at least worked before they took it. A short mechanical noise came from the small machine, picture rolling out with ease.

They slipped the camera and picture into the pocket of their baggy pants, too good of a find to cast aside. Two Time had seen a camera in the past, but they were pretty rare in the community due to their reliance on film and general hassle.

Random things were tossed into plastic bags, sorting between toss and donate. Amarah and Two Time finished up the cleaning after not too long, sun now high in the sky to signal afternoon.

“That took longer than I anticipated.” Two Time mumbled, stretching their back to get the cricks out. The sun was beating down on the both of them as they stood in front of the abandoned home.

Amarah didn’t reply immediately, distance in their gaze as they stared at the bags.

“Two Time?”

They glanced over, putting down one of the bags as they tied it off.

“Would you ever consider leaving this family?” Amarah questioned, an ominous and cold atmosphere now enveloping the both of them.

“..Of course not. Why?” Two Time winced, not liking where this particular conversation was heading. It felt insulting to have someone they looked up to ask such a thing.

“The people around us can influence our decisions, make us think what we're doing is wrong when really it’s the right thing to do. You’d make the right choice if someone asked you to leave, right? No matter who asks you?”

Two Time’s eyes were captured in the heavy stare of Amarah, heavy unease creeping up on them.

“Yes, I’d make the right choice. Please don’t worry about me.” They said with a smile, trying to subtly lighten the mood.

Amarah just nodded, doing nothing but adding to the unsettling undercurrent of their conversation.

“I suppose you wouldn’t mind leading tonight’s ceremony then?”

“I’d love to.” Two Time said without any hesitation.

Amarah looked satisfied for now, moving past and clutching the bags in his strong grip. The underlying tension had faded from his voice, the easiness from before returning.

“Great. I will see you soon then.” Amarah then started to walk away, not exchanging another word.

Two Time was left to their own devices until the ceremony came, awkwardly standing around after losing their guidance.

Their hand drifted back down to their pockets, remembering the camera they had taken moments prior. They took it back out, tilting it to the side. They weren't very fluent or interested in technology, and it wasn’t like anyone in the commune was either. Though, there was one person they knew who could have a use for it.

Two Time stuffed the camera back in their pocket and began to walk to their desired destination.

They sighed as they stood in front of the garden, sun still persistently shining in their eyes. If there was anywhere Azure would be mid-day, it would be here.

Two Time made themselves start moving, walking underneath the archway and into the garden. They could see why Azure devoted a lot of their time here, it was nice, and it was also their job to take care of it. A few other people were there as well, friends with friends, children with their parents.

Vibrant green blades of grass and the strong scent of florals surrounded them on all sides, nose twitching under the sudden change. The fragrance and the sound of birds was quick to palliate any lingering stress from the conversation with Amarah.

It didn’t take long for them to find Azure, the other crouched over a flower bed with a watering can.

“Azure.” Two Time called out, idly standing next to his side.

He looked up from the flowers that he was attending to, fringe helping to block the sun from their vision. Two Time could still see the joy that was brought into his expression when he saw them, an unwanted spark poking at their heart.

They rose from their spot on the grass after putting down the watering can, gloved hand dabbing at some of the sweat and hair that was stuck to their forehead.

“Hi Times!” Azure cheered, a warm energy in their tone.

Two Time shrugged off the casual use of their nickname, the use making their stomach squeeze.

“I found something I thought you might be interested in.” They said plainly, reaching in their pants and passing the camera off to Azure.

Their face lit up, looking at it from different angles as they inspected it in their hands. “You found this?”

“Yeah, in an.. old house. I figured you’d use it more since I’d be too afraid to waste the film.”

Azure just nodded, viewfinder to their face now as they held it up at Two Time.

The other thought Azure was surveying its parts before taking a picture, caught off guard when the flash went off and blinded them.

“Ugh- hey!” Two Time whined, taking a few steps backwards and covering their eyes as they blinked away any shock.

Azure snickered under his breath, watching the picture roll out of the bottom of the machine. It appeared dark, but would likely develop within the next couple of minutes.

Two Time huffed, batting away the last remnants of bright light as they gave Azure a warning glare, though not truly annoyed. They returned to his side as the two of them watched the picture come into view.

The photo wasn’t in outstanding quality, yet it still managed to make Azure smile.

“You look so serious.” They joked, thumb rubbing over a sticky corner of the image.

Two Time could only bear to roll their eyes. “I wonder why.”

Azure lightly patted them on the back as an apology, Two Time shifting underneath the touch.

“I’m just kidding, you know that. Let’s take one together now.” He suggested, glancing around for anyone nearby.

“Together…?” They spoke under their breath, uncertainty written on their face.

Azure then stopped, looking nervous.

“We don’t have to if you don’t want to.” They reassured as they began to juggle the camera between their rough hands.

Two Time wasn’t sure if taking a picture together would really help their current case, or the guilt they felt. At the same time, the feeling of missing out felt like it’d be worse.

“I want to.” They said, coming out more straightforward than they would like.

Azure saw the pause, yet didn’t say anything. He silently nodded and politely asked a close by member. They saw the other return with someone new, Azure standing next to Two Time as the person taking the photo stood a few feet in front of them.

“How do you want us to...” Two Time trailed off, unsure of how to pose or look for the picture, as Azure did too.

“Just.. here.”

Azure slid his arm behind Two Time, casually pulling them closer by the waist with his strong forearms.

Their body stiffened, heartbeat skipping as they stared at the floor of the garden, too afraid to look at Azure. Despite the initial stun, it was comfortable, a lot more comfortable than they would’ve expected. Two Time couldn’t help but think back to what Amarah had said earlier.

“..Fear is the very thing that can push us to act…”

They sighed, willing themselves to put their arm over Azure’s shoulder with the same friendly confidence the other had, forcing a small grin on their face.

Azure tightened much like Two Time had, though their smile became more fuzzy as they looked at the camera, visibly pleased.

Two Time felt like they were both glued together, holding this position awkwardly longer than would be accepted. Azure was warm and smelled like the outdoors, a result of working outside for so long. They almost pulled him closer, though that would be strange given the circumstances, but maybe..

An audible click was then heard, the member that Azure had asked lowering the camera from their eyes.

Just as quickly as Azure had coiled their arm around Two Time, they had left them to go retrieve the camera, leaving them to miss the short-lived warmth that had brought temporary solace to their complex feelings.

“Here.” Azure extended their hand to Two Time, letting them see the photo.

They took it from him, finding themselves impressed by it. They didn’t want to admit it, but the picture made them feel a sense of pride, the heat from the photo being rolled out only reminded them from the moment prior.

The both of them were smiling in the picture, arms respectively wrapped around each other.

“Nice..” Two Time muttered, concealing any elation from their voice.

“I want you to have it.” Azure commented, admiring the picture themselves as they looked at it in Two Time’s hand.

“Me? Are you sure?”

Azure nodded. “Yeah! You gave me the camera, so it’s only fair that I return the gift.”

Two Time couldn’t argue against that, carefully placing it in their pocket.

Azure had already put their camera away in one of their compartments, kneeling back down in the grass.

“Say, I gotta finish this up before tomorrow, but I wouldn’t mind going photographing later.” He exclaimed, gripping the watering can once more.

Two Time slowly nodded, the thought of that activity making their head spin with triumph. “Yeah, I have things to do also. I’ll let you know when.”

Water dampened the soil, droplets cascading over the flowers as Azure multitasked.

“Okay!”

Two Time felt reluctant to leave so soon, but they could respect the time Azure was taking to attend to their responsibilities.

“Bye, I’ll see you later.” Two Time waved, Azure doing the same.

The pair said their goodbyes, Two Time walking back to their own house while they waited for time to pass until the ceremony.

The walk back was quiet, only the sounds of nature to soothe whatever they were thinking.

Two Time had made it back, directly heading to their bedroom and sitting down on their old mattress. Two Time took the photo back out from their pocket, fingers grazing over it in a longing manner. They placed the picture on their bedside table, making metal note to hang it up later.

Azure looked so cheerful even if his hat and hair was blocking most of his face, Two Time shared a more relaxed look, but appeared equally as cheery.

Two Time sighed deeply as they leaned back, now laying down. A combination of fondness and guilt flooded their brain, their feelings only getting more out of control. Was it right to pursue what they wanted, or what Spawn wanted? They didn’t know anymore, and that hurt.

Two Time closed their eyes, deciding to sleep on it, like always.

Chapter Text

The clock on the wall ticked slowly, the minute hand passing onto the next segment as the smaller second hand reached twelve.

2:22 P.M.

Two Time sat on their couch, leg bouncing restlessly as they watched the clock. They had spent the first half of the day attending to their responsibilities before spending the other half fitfully organizing their own home in preparation for Azure’s arrival.

Azure, of course, asked to spend time together, and Two Time hardly contemplated their answer before sputtering out that the other should come by their house.

Thus, Two Time was now forced to anxiously wait, occasionally getting up to walk around and spot anything that might’ve slipped their fourth, now fifth, checkover. Their home wasn’t as exciting as Azure’s, but this didn’t mean they could skimp out on appearances.

They weren’t too sure why they were so focused on impressing Azure in the first place. It wasn’t about approval or making a good impression anymore, but rather something else. Something they weren’t quite ready to acknowledge.

The thought of it made Two Time uneasy still, mind drifting back to the picture they took together not too long ago. It had been maybe a week since then, but they found themselves carrying the photo in their pocket wherever they went. It was nice to look at it, a little memento of a time they admittedly longed for whenever they were caught up in a boring task. They were keeping it on the table in the living room for now however.

Just as they were about to sit back down, there was a series of gentle raps on the door, a familiar

Two Time was quick to not waste any more time anxiously fretting, shuffling over and opening the front door for their visitor.

As expected, Azure stood on the front steps of their home, head snapping to them once he realized the door had been unlocked.

“Hey!” Azure was the first to speak up, stepping closer to the other with a smile.

“Two minutes late, I’m afraid you can’t come in.” Two Time teased calmly, opening the door wider for Azure to come in.

Azure stepped in once Two Time gave the opportunity, in a hurry to escape the sweltering heat that emitted outside. A soft scoff left his lips when he heard their words, retreating into the living room and taking a seat to the left of Two Time after kicking off their shoes.

“It’s called being fashionably late. That way, you can’t tell how excited I am to see you.”

That deserved an eye roll from Two Time, but the mental image was sweet. Azure worriedly checking the clock only to start his walk to their house once it began to cut close, just to avoid looking eager? Two Time could dream.

Or not, because that was weird.. to be thinking about Azure in that way.

“You’re terrible.” They retorted, words having no real spite.

Azure was ready to speak up until they caught sight of the picture on the table, a faint smile coming to their lips as he reached for it. Not even a wrinkle or scratch was on it, a rare trait for things that were in the possession of Two Time.

“Oh? Who’s this stunning-looking guy?” He smirked, pointing at himself in the picture.

Two Time huffed, clenching their jaw to hold back any unwanted words from flowing out.

“Some stranger, I dunno.” They shot back, their own mischief on their face.

Azure made a faint noise, hunching over the table as they put the picture back down, grabbing a nearby ballpoint pen that lay on the smooth, finished wood. A short click resounded in the room, Two Time now peering over the other's shoulder with some curiosity as Azure began to write in the blank space beneath the printed image.

Two Time could see Azure beginning to spell “best” in all capitals, the E, in Azure fashion, being backwards.

“You still write your E’s like that?” They pointed out, the pen in Azure’s hand now stopped.

“My penmanship is… still not very good, even after all this time.” He shyly admitted, the letters in sloppy uppercase, spacing making the word look squished despite there being plenty of space.

Two Time bit the inside of their cheek, quietly regretting pointing out Azure’s chicken-scratch after watching him cringe when it was brought up. In a quick, desperate attempt to fix things, Two Time had an idea.

“That’s fine, I’ll help.” They uncurled their fingers, palm now extended out and facing upwards in his direction.

Azure surrendered the ballpoint pen to Two Time, ready to lean back before they stopped him.

“Not what I meant, silly.” They mumbled.

Two Time put the pen back in Azure’s hand, resuming appropriate writing position before their pale hand surrounded his, encroaching on his personal space.

They had already mentally prepared themselves for this moment, heart nearly skipping a beat as both of them practically held each other's hands.

They could feel Azure tense up once their warm fingers encompassed his, guiding the pen back to the space where the first word had been written. Two Time then leisurely started to guide Azure’s wrist, both of them trying their best to write “friends.” They took a small stop as they got to the E, Azure resisting the muscle memory to flick the crosses backwards.

Two Time let go once they finished the word, though Azure made sure to end it off with an exclamation mark.

“See? You just need some guidance.” Two Time hummed with satisfaction, the photo now being labeled in messy pen with “BƎST FRIENDS!” on the bottom.

Azure, still recovering from their rather close moment with the other, nodded faintly.

“Really..? I still think it looks funny.” They murmured, his thumb rubbing over the first part of where he originally messed up. His face was full of uncertainty, natural oils on the tips of his fingers starting to smudge the ink.

Two Time took the picture back, not wanting Azure to worry or damage it anymore.

“You’ll get it eventually. I can help you later if you want.” Two Time offered, already putting the picture away.

Azure shrugged, beginning to play it off. “I’m not too concerned about it. I guess as long as I can read my own writing, it's fine.”

Two Time understood quietly, a thought coming to their head that made them smile.

“Maybe I’ll get you a typewriter.” They suggested, only half-serious. They weren’t too sure where they’d even acquire one if they were to follow through with that plan.

“A typewriter..?” Intrigue in his voice.

“Yeah, so you can write your notes or.. Whatever you want.”

Azure went quiet upon the talk, a thoughtful look crossing over onto their face. It didn’t sound like a bad idea, an easy solution to the problem he had for most of his life now.

“I’ll be expecting one this Spawn Gifting then.” Azure countered softly, referencing the winter holiday their community celebrated.

Spawn Gifting was usually fun, except for the part where Two Time received the same gift for the past couple of years. They absolutely loved Spawn, no doubt, but getting the exact same prayer book every year from their superiors was… beginning to get old. The same copies had filled an entire shelf in their room, and they knew the collection would only continue to grow.

“It's finally starting to cool down outside, so that gift is closer than you think.” Two Time replied, fuzzy thoughts about spending the holiday with Azure starting to sprout and take hold in Two Time head, spikey tail coiling up on itself.

“Speaking of gifts, are you hungry?” Azure asked nicely, steering the conversation.

Two Time snapped out of their fantasies, the light pink on their face fading away just as quickly as it came.

“Mmm, yes? I think the dining hall for lunch is already closed though...” They mumbled, voice wavering as their mind still recovered from the thoughts of Azure.

“No, I mean making our own food.” Azure corrected, getting up from where they were sitting now.

Two Time watched as Azure wandered over to the kitchen, quietly stepping on the tiled floor of that section. He gripped the handle of the fridge, swinging the door open to be met with hardly anything inside, water and containers of half-eaten food. They closed the fridge door once they saw there was nothing of use.

Azure had some concerns, but didn’t say anything. Two Time on the other hand, still watched silently.

Next, Azure began to look through their cabinets, peering into the dark cupboards to find scraps and forgotten ingredients that Two Time probably wasn’t going to bother to utilize. If it were anyone else, they’d be irritated that they were wasting food, but Azure could only feel concern.

“I’m guessing you don’t cook…” Azure uttered, really talking to themselves more than anything as they gently shut the cupboard.

Despite all the obstacles, Azure could still make this work.. Somehow.

He fetched a small pot out from one of the bottom cabinets, placing it on the gas stove after filling it with water, and firing it on.

By now, Two Time had already stood up to go investigate whatever Azure was doing inside their kitchen, parking next to their side.

“I know there isn’t a lot here. You don’t have to make me anything; I can wait.” Two Time gave Azure a reassuring smile, not wanting to put any obligations on him.

“It’s fine, I like cooking, you know?”

Two Time only hummed, glancing down at the stove. “I’m afraid whatever you’re making will be a sadder meal than the ones they serve us in the dining hall.”

Azure let out a lighthearted, offended sneer. “Are you doubting my cooking skills?”

They were quick to deny any skepticism. “No! I’d just be surprised if you managed to make something with so little..”

Azure understood, but they still couldn’t resist teasing. “Considering you probably only eat food from the dining hall, I think anything I make right now could impress you.

Two Time huffed, the pair now sitting down at the small dining table that was off to the side in the kitchen. The legs of the chairs let out a screech against the tile, making Two Time cringe briefly before resuming normally.

“Why? What’s wrong with the food from there?”

Azure gave them a soft look of disbelief.

“Two Time...” Azure said gently, like they were telling an obvious fact.

“What?” They insisted, a grin slowly creeping up on their face.

“Remember that time you bit into that slice of bread, and it was still doughy in the middle..?”

Two Time nodded, though the experience was a forgettable one. Instances like that were just something they’d gotten used to, they weren’t too bothered by the culinary concerns behind it either. “It wasn’t that noticeable.”

Azure could only sigh at that response; the other too brazen about their ignorance to deserve a reply.

“Well, I can assure you we will not be eating undercooked or unseasoned food.” Azure reinforced.

Two Time seemed to be okay with that.

Both conversed casually in the meantime, Azure periodically standing up to attend to the pot on the stove.

Two Time watched the other work from the table, eyes glued to their hands moving the ingredients around. Very few people would’ve done this for them, so why was Azure doing it? It felt like a rather monotonous task to be doing, even out of quick, irrational kindness. A gentle heat flooded their chest, thoughts of Spawn quick to distract their brain.

Azure had finished preparing the meal and plated the contents up, sitting back down across from Two Time after distributing the shiny silverware to both of their seats.

He casually extended his arms across the table, Two Time clasping onto his hands as per the tradition of praying before meals in their religion.

A gesture that would’ve felt so natural, felt illicit. Distressing feelings of guilt spawned in Two Time’s heart, watching the other shut their eyelids so casually, quietly mumbling an inaudible thanks to Spawn.

Azure’s eyelids flick open to see Two Time giving them a culpable stare, something that felt worrisome.

“Everything okay..?” He asked gently, kindly squeezing their battered fingers.

“Azure, I…”

Their words lapsed before they could become anything more, only pushing Azure’s concern.

“Yes?” They kept their tone mellow.

Two Time swallowed hard.

“I feel like.. I’m undeserving of saying thanks.” Two Time said straightforwardly, but their face continued to be filled with uneasy confusion.

That certainly wasn’t something they were expecting to hear.

“What? Why?”

Two Time shrugged, a simple question they didn't have an answer to. Azure couldn’t see it, but their small tail was nervously bouncing against the back of their chair.

Azure chewed his cheek, though understanding filled their gaze. “That’s okay, you can repeat my thanks. That way it’ll be like we’re sharing it together, while you don’t have to think too hard about it.”
A soft exhale left Two Time’s lips, but they nodded regardless, closing their eyes as Azure began.

“Thank you, Spawn..” Their voices quietly overlapped with each other.

“..for allowing us to share this meal, this space, and this moment in time with each other…”

“...and we pray you continue to guide and bless us with your everlasting kindness.”

Two Time finished echoing the prayer, opening their eyelids to find Azure already looking at them. Reassurance was offered on his face.

“Better..?” He asked.

Two Time was tempted to say no, but they had already caused enough trouble for Azure for the day.

“Yes, thank you..” They muttered, forcing themselves to smile back at the other.

Azure was quick to believe it, only a small blip in their hangout. His hands slowly returned to his side of the table as they picked up their fork.

“I hope you like it!” He chirped, already turning the conversation away from the momentary downhearted turn of their chat.

Two Time picked up their fork as well, the shiny metal feeling cool in their hands compared to the steam rolling off the fresh food below. They couldn’t quite remember the last time they ate in their own home.

Suddenly, the meal didn’t matter, and neither did the warmth in their body.

Two Time wondered if Azure, too, could feel the boiling point of their time together, Spawn reaching its limits with what was happening.

Chapter Text

Soft and gentle moonlight shone past through Two Time’s open window, a cool breeze flowing through the compact holes that comprised the screen. The unbearably noisy chirping of crickets and cicadas blared throughout the commune, little remorse for those who actually valued their sleep.

They sat up in their bed, back planted against the headboard as they rested in a fetal position, head resting on their knees, wrinkling their pajamas in the process. They sought solace in the insect's symphony, finding it a soothing white noise. Light from the moon reflected off their dark eye, enhancing the luminosity of the milky white that remained in their right.

Two Time found themselves waiting on Azure, who said he would fetch them for a night stroll. Being out past curfew was strictly forbidden, and typically, they’d protest breaking the rules. Still, Azure said he found something he needed to show them, so they’d go along with it, even if they were a bit huffy about the idea.

Their own flimsy justification made them shake their head, the pair consistently broke the rules, Two Time getting wrapped up in whatever harmless plan Azure had at that moment. Not that they minded anyway. The short adventures they went on were the most exciting parts of their week, more often than not.

If Two Time was being honest, they were nervous. The pair snuck out a lot when they were younger to escape whatever colorless chore they were assigned for that day, but it had been a while since then, a long while. Not to mention, Two Time could still see Amarah’s disappointed glare whenever they thought of the memory of them getting caught…

They shivered. Neither of them snuck away after that, Amarah and others making them apologize to Spawn for abandoning their duties.

Nevertheless, here they were now, waiting for Azure’s arrival.

Now that they were returning to their old juvenile habits, Two Time wondered when Azure would suggest sleeping in each other's rooms to avoid being separated. Although, on second thought, they’d prefer to skip over that one.

The memories would remain sweet in their mind, like many of their childhood recollections involving Azure. They were practically bound together with glue back then, the other members of their commune naturally suspicious when one was seen without the other. It was for the best to grow out of that phase of their lives for safety, but they knew their tight-knit fondness for each other never truly went away.

Yet, they enjoyed these new personal moments with Azure. Even if it made them feel funny… or strange, or—

“Pssst...!”

A hushed voice hissed from outside; Two Time quick to pull themselves together.

Their feet hit the wood floor as they tossed their blankets aside, padding over to the open window and cautiously peaking over the windowsill. Muscles lost their tension once they saw it wasn’t patrol ready to scold them for being awake, Azure’s sturdy silhouette clear as day under the moonlight.

“There you are.” Two Time sighed, pulling off the insect screen from the window.

Azure’s hat slipped backward, lips curling upward as they eyed Two Time peeking down at him.

“Sorry for the wait, I almost got caught.” He whispered, admiring Two Time in their Spawn pajamas. He found it commendable how they sewed the symbol onto most of their possessions, Azure never too good at sewing themself.

Two Time shook their head, rubbing their eyes to wake themselves up from their convoluted thoughts. “No worries, Azure. I’m not ready yet.”

“We should be quick, I don’t want—...” Azure then trailed off as their eyes spotted a piece of fabric on Two Time’s head.

“When did you start wearing a sleep mask?” He asked quietly, more than amused.

Two Time blinked, hand swiping the light pink sleep mask that was strapped to the front of their head off with swiftness. Azure watched it slip from their hands, flying out of sight to land in a tidy corner.

“Doesn’t matter. Give me a moment.” They then backed away from the window to retreat to their closet.

Azure giggled at the others' quick dismissal, double-checking over his shoulder to alert if any wandering members were approaching. Thankfully, they were still in the clear. Two Time then returned to the window after a few quiet minutes, appropriately dressed this time.

“You sure I can’t leave through my front door..?” They said with uncertainty.

The jump from the window to the grass wasn’t a big drop; their window was raised higher from the ground due to the basement. Even if they did fall, it would probably only leave a bruise. Yet, the risk still hung over them. The last thing they needed was one of their superiors grilling them about some scrapes and bruises.

“I already checked, there are people out front. Besides, your window faces the way we’re supposed to go.” Azure gestured for them to hop out.

Two Time grimaced. “You’ll catch me, right?”

Azure rolled their eyes, raising their arms. “No Times, I’m going to let you fall.” A smirk followed as the words came out.

“Azure…” They frowned, climbing up onto the sill as they held one of its edges.

The smug look on his face then softened. “I’m not being serious, you know that. I’ll catch you.”

Two Time let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding, hesitating one last time. They finally shifted their hand on the window as they pushed off the sill. Fear surged through them for only half a second, their short gasp halted as their body made contact with Azure’s. Strong arms secured them safely against his chest and carefully eased them down, their shoes touching the greenery below.

“See? I told you.” Azure smiled.

Two Time took a shaky breath, a laugh of disbelief escaping their lips. Thank the Spawn the moon could only provide so much light, otherwise Azure would see their beet-red face.

“R-right, I know.” Two Time attempted to straighten themselves out, trying to mentally smooth over the proximity they had shared.

Azure grabbed their hand, pulling Two Time along as they started to walk away from the house. The longer they took, the sleepier they’d be in the morning. Not like Azure really minded anyway.

“Come on, don’t want to hold ourselves up more than we have.” Azure reiterated.

“You couldn’t have shown me this place during daylight hours...?” Two Time huffed, eyes scanning the surrounding area. They were trying their best to ignore how warm Azure’s hand was in theirs.

“No, I couldn’t.” Azure didn’t elaborate any further, but the soft mischief was still all over their face.

Two Time didn’t say anything more, already knowing Azure was pretty serious about his secrets, and nothing more would leave his lips.

The two of them made sure to stay in the shadows, avoiding the gravel pathway where patrols would be surveying. They crept around buildings and residences, Two Time assuming they were heading toward the treeline off in the near distance.

They strayed away from the grass, an upcoming creek blocking their goal. Rocks and rubble were crushed beneath the weight of their shoes as they approached the overpass connecting to the other side. An unfamiliar form, gently swinging an oil lamp, drew near the bridge in a leisurely fashion.

Azure was the first to notice, jerking Two Time down to the side of the bridge before pointing underneath. They were about to vehemently protest before Azure held a finger up to his own lips, pointing urgently, so, with a sigh, they sulkily stepped into the cold creek and inched under, Azure following after. Two Time was thankful that the riverbank wasn’t too steep, at least allowing them not to soak, though they still grimaced as they saw the bottoms of their pants dark with water.

Both of them stayed quiet as they heard the patrol come near, forgetting how to breathe as they listened to the heavy, clunky footfall on the unsteady bridge.

Two Time glanced over at Azure, who looked equally worried. They had their gloved hand pressed against their mouth, giving Two Time a knowing look. And maybe for a moment, it gave Two Time a sense of déjà vu. To be young, pressed close together, giggling as they hid in some dusty storage closet, those fond days of sneaking away as they had remembered earlier before Azure had shown up.

“Quiet Two Time! They’re not supposed to see us in here, hehe!”

Goodness, Azure was something else then. Two Time much preferred to follow the rules and keep to their own when possible, a silent sentinel. Azure had the freedom to be social in the commune, but made room for a healthy amount of mischief.

Blinking back into reality, they listened to the sounds of footsteps go further down the gravel path behind them. The pair waited until the volume became inaudible, crawling out from underneath the bridge.

“You okay?” Azure asked, brushing off his clothing out of decency.

Two Time did the same, a pouty expression on their face as they saw the wet cuffs of their bottoms. “Yeah…”

Azure nodded, catching sight of the bottom of his brown gown, which was wet as well.

Azure couldn’t help but feel bad, figuring the side of the bridge would’ve probably sufficed. Meanwhile, Two Time didn’t want to stay mad for too long, not that they could, given the circumstances.

“Cease the weeping, you. Let’s depart before more patrols come.” Two Time grabbed Azure’s hand, wordlessly asking them to lead the way.

Azure stiffened with the contact, but nonetheless obeyed.

They quietly scurried across the bridge, making sure to avoid any loose or noisy planks that made the overpass.

Grass blades skimmed underneath their shoes, the gentle wind whispering lightly like hushed secrets. Dim shadows were cast below, already a contrast with the lighter grass. The night air smelled damp and earthy, a common quality of the commune that was beloved by the two of them. Despite the previous nerves, excitement still buzzed in the air around them, much like the surrounding insects that hummed so relentlessly.

The dyad successfully crept into the forest after some careful inching. Light from the moon filtered through leaves and branches from the trees above, the flecks doing enough to help Azure find the path. No one should’ve been able to follow them anymore, at least the forest’s carpet of leaves muffling their footsteps. Any noise heard now by a patrol would be passed off as an animal, and their destination was far enough away not to worry about their voices.

Now that the question of punishment was on their mind, what would happen if they were caught? This late and this far away from the commune, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to believe they were fleeing from the community. They weren’t children anymore, and it would be considered a serious offense. Would they be forced to clean the kitchen floors with just a toothbrush? Make an oath to Spawn to never do something like this again? Be exiled from the commune? Two Time didn’t want to think about it.

Besides, it was peaceful. Two Time could appreciate this midnight escapade regardless of all their anxieties and weighty guilt for them to turn back and go to sleep. An owl hooting in the distance, crickets chirping away, and leaves rustling from the wind coaxed Two Time to view their choice as a positive one. When could they ever experience this level of closeness with Azure again like this?

Two Time was then halted as Azure began to slow in speed, easing to a stroll now as they came up on some hanging brush that obscured their view of the path ahead.

Azure looked almost giddy, attempting (and failing) to put a cap on his excitement. “Okay, we’re here. Are you ready?”

Two Time wasn’t sure what to expect. It was the middle of the night, in an unknown and unfamiliar location, on a random date that didn’t hold any particular significance, unless it did and they forgot. And if that were the case, then… they’d feel pretty terrible.

“I’m ready, and… excited.” They smiled, hand flexing subtly in Azure’s.

Azure then reached forward, brushing the hanging leaves of the weeping willow out of their way.

The scent was the first thing to hit Two Time, the same fragrant smell that they had once been brought to their nose before.

Their eyes widened at the sight now before them, a field of nightshades, all a venomously purple glow under the white moonlight. Even the anthers were radiant, giving the flower the illusion of a bright yellow eye from its unfused cone. A vast sea, all swaying in the nighttime breeze. It wafted that invading pungent, sweet, and intoxicating scent, all traits that nudged Two Time’s brain to the memory of the first time they stumbled across the plant with Azure.

“Azure, this is…” Two Time couldn’t quite fit the words out; any noise stuck and clogged in their throat.

“Good?” Azure piped in, their smile beforehand diminishing into something gentler, almost nervous for Two Time’s reply. Their hands still intertwined, Azure took their hand and held it to his chest.

“Magical.” They said with finality.

Azure couldn’t form words for a second, shifting their head forward so their hat would slip down and hide their cheesy smile and red face.

“Well, I have one more surprise for you. I just hope we’re not too late.”

Azure guided Two Time further into the field, hands clung tightly together. Both pairs of feet shuffling through made ripples in the sea of violet petals, faintly brushing against the fabrics of their bottoms, barely reaching the middle of their calves. There was a spot among the flowers that thinned out, Azure kneeling to sit down, Two Time quick to do the same, tail curling up as they made appropriate room between Azure and themselves.

Two Time looked around, taking in everything there was to take in. It made them restless for the mentioned second surprise, finger idly twirling a piece of grass.

Azure chuckled, tapping them on the shoulder to tear their attention away from the ground. Two Time was ready to open their mouth before Azure pointed wordlessly to the sky.

Another beautiful sight reflected off their dark eye. The night sky was filled with tiny white dots, stars gleaming brightly. And before Two Time was getting to turn their gaze away, a streak of bright light zipped across the sky, shooting in and fading out just as fast as it had come into view, another one following in its wake.

A meteor shower.

Two Time was quick to whip their head to Azure, face full of shock.

“You– how did... How did you plan this?” They asked, voice full of wonder.

Azure just shrugged, feigning innocence. “I have my ways.”

Two Time knew what a meteor shower was, but they had never seen one with their own eyes, retellings of the celestial sight by elders to be written off as exaggerations and not thought much of. Now that they were seeing it for themselves, it was captivating, Two Time unable to pull their eyes away.

Small, fast-moving trails glided against the spotted night from all directions, each trail having its own color, from a fiery white to a gentle pale green. A real cosmic beauty.

“You planned all this for me?” Two Time questioned again, like everything so far was almost too good to be true. It pained them to look away from the night, but Azure wasn’t a bad sight either.

“Of course, anything for my…

...best friend.”

Azure smiled, though his eyes remained unchanged, unlike they normally would when smiling.

Two Time didn’t think much of it, didn’t want to. It made their throat dry, saliva escaping them somehow despite being perfectly fine moments before.

“Thank you, really. I’ve never observed anything like this before. I most likely wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for you.” True gratitude coated their tone, Two Time mentally noting to return the favor later.

Azure rolled their eyes, but their voice came out shaky, unsure. “Don’t thank me Times, you should thank the Spawn for creating all… this.”

“I can do both. You shouldn’t downplay yourself either, I wouldn’t have laid eyes upon one of Spawn’s great creations without you. ” Two Time quickly followed up, teasingly rocking on one side of their body to nudge Azure.

“Oh, enough..” Azure breathed out, not making any counterattack at the nudge.

Two Time could tell that something had become off with Azure, stiffer, maybe more distant.

“You’re welcome, I’ve had this area on my mind for a while. So… I’m really happy you like it, Times.” He followed up, keeping a calmer expression.

“A while?” They hummed.

“Yes, I know. My excitement always suggests I tell you straight away.” Azure huffed, but he couldn’t help but laugh at himself at the end.

“And what halted you this time?” Two Time quizzed, stealing a glance at Azure, who stayed quiet for moments longer upon the ask.

“I’m not sure.”

Thick silence hung over the both of them, Azure usually the one to carry the conversation, but that was fine. Words didn’t need to be spoken, insects happily filling in the space in between.

The cool wind Two Time had faced earlier was still in action, sweeping over them both. Sure, it was comfortable before, but now it was getting a bit cold, shivering from yet another steady breeze. They could see Azure wasn’t affected, his usual clothing having way more layers than they did.

Azure noticed too, quick to take off their own dusty brown shawl, wrapping it around Two Time’s shoulders. They didn’t stop him, not saying anything even as Azure pulled them closer. Maybe they didn’t need to.

This was fine. Two Time wouldn’t protest.

They found themselves moving closer into Azure, sides touching, Two Time leaning their head on Azure’s shoulder.

Neither would say a word, only focused on the stars.

Chapter Text

“And so I must ask thee before we depart, are thou truly serving Spawn with all thy heart, body, and soul?”

The question dangled in the air, the church quiet. The only other noise that held out was the faint shifting of plain clothes and the coughs of members' dry throats. The walls soaked in the sound, as if they were listening to the teaching as well.

“We exist in a corrupt, decadent world. A world that only values superficial pleasures, a society that praises revolting greed and regrettable selfishness.”

There was a certain pause that followed between the priest’s sentences, a moment to reflect on what was being preached, a familiar message that accompanied each sermon.

“Only here, in this palace of holiness, can we truly remind ourselves of the importance of Spawn’s wishes, his values, his guidance. Let us recall that we, a family, are stronger together, rather than apart.”

Two Time was in their usual spot, body planted in a pew at the front, their eyes zeroed in on the priest, waiting for those final words that were always at the end of each speech.

“Thank you.”

Every member in the audience then stood up, each bending their backs to take a bow before respectively filing out of their seats and down to the exit, some lingering behind.

“Please be sure to travel along and spread kindness before the morrow. Not because it benefits thee, but because it's the righteous thing to do.” The priest spoke, backing away from the small microphone on the lectern.

Two Time had already made an effort to get up and out of their seat. They had read the board that morning and were already mulling over the long day of menial organizing through approved donations ahead. However, if it was for the commune, then it was worth it.

Just as they were ready to head through the church’s large, grandiose double doors, a firm hand set itself on Two Time’s thin shoulder.

“Two Time!”

They knew that voice by heart by now, none other than Azure. Their name twisted off his tongue so effortlessly, chords filled with comforting fondness, an adoring sweetness even. Two Time had spun their head around, legs coming to a halt as they pulled Azure to the side to avoid blocking the stream of members leaving.

“Greetings… Azure.” They mumbled back, straightening their back out.

“How are thee this.. fine morning?” He smiled softly, avoiding the use of casual speech around others.

Two Time watched the members walking by behind Azure give them passing glances, their gazes derisive. They knew some could be nosy at times, but this early? And in the church of all places?

“I am… managing.” They spoke with a lackluster tone. It was the truth. Mornings weren’t really their strong suit.

Azure turned their head back now, body following after as the pair made their way out of the church with everyone else. For Azure, speaking so properly with Two Time after middays in the dining hall and quiet personal adventures felt wrong. He always assumed no one was listening to them in the dining hall or just didn’t care enough to, but here? Things felt different.

“Managing? My, that certainly represents thee.” Azure chuckled, winning a small smile from Two Time in return. At least they could agree on that.

They made it outside, the sun feeling easier this time around as the colder seasons finally began to roll in. A breeze still lingered in the air, a subtle hint that autumn was around the corner and maybe a silent reminder of their shared night in the field days prior.

“Well… I should be departing now. Long day for me.” Two Time hummed, briefly looking toward the path they were supposed to be headed on.

Azure bit their tongue, swallowing before speaking again, wanting to hold on to the presence of Two Time. “Ah– hang on.. um..” They sputtered, voice coming out louder than he intended. The small outburst did its job of keeping Two Time in place at least, who was now shifting their weight to the other foot upon being stopped.

“Where… are you going?” He fitted out innocently, the mask of propriety inadvertently slipping off.

“The library. I was told to organize some things from there today.” Two Time replied simply, not bothered to delve into further detail.

Azure blinked, taking a moment to gain back his confidence. Oh Spawn, why was he so nervous?

“Can I come with you?” He asked again, afraid of rejection in the face of the church.

Two Time faintly grinned, hearing the nervousness in his voice. “Sure.” Azure felt a rush of relief as the words of confirmation soothed their fluttery stomach. He didn’t waste any more time, following behind Two Time like an eager puppy as they began to lead the way.

It wasn’t even an hour before Two Time began to slow down in progress and start mindlessly fiddling with the corner of a page.

The process wasn’t hard, but rather just as they had expected; menial and boring. A repetitive cycle of flipping through a book to double-check its contents, then placing it in a stack to be shelved or in a box to be burned. Their eyes flicked to Azure, who was next to them and looked to be a lot more invested in the process than Two Time was. At least they had someone to help speed up the whole affair.

“You’re enjoying this just as I would’ve thought.” Two Time gently nudged Azure, snapping him out of his concentration bubble to see a light, cheeky smile plastered on their face. Putting the book he was looking through down on the table, Azure’s face deepened in color. “Hey..! What?” They whined, flustered.

“I’m kidding.” Two Time puffed, going back to sorting. “I appreciate your help. This would take forever without you here.”

Azure relaxed, but it didn’t mean he’d forgive them so easily. They were ready to bite back with an equally harmless counter, but Two Time was the first to speak instead.

“But anyway… why’d you ask to come with me? Not that I mind or anything. I would’ve thought you were busy attending to your own duties, or something else of the sort.”

Azure then stopped what they were doing momentarily, mustering up courage from the bottom of his throat. “I wasn’t assigned anything today, so I figured I could assist you.” Azure pushed out, thumbs glossing over the edges of the soft and smooth pages, corners frayed from a lifetime of gentle use. He was trying hard to build up to what he actually wanted to say, but his words were failing them.

Two Time nodded silently, the answer enough to suffice. Their hands remained busy, cracking open new, old, leather, or paperback books back-to-back, attempting to discover some kind of rhythm. Their eyes still kept drawing themselves to Azure and his operations, prompt and simple, yet the swiftness gave way to his hidden feelings.

“You don’t have to rush, you know,” Two Time mentioned casually, a quiet pry in disguise, “we have all day.”

Azure would place the book in the designated stack, lips pulled tight with feigned nonchalance as he picked up the next. “Ah… I was kind of hoping to do something with you later.”

Two Time had silently expected that. Azure always had a nervous sort of energy whenever he wanted to ask for something, a habit that had developed when they were young. They smiled to themself.

“And what have you planned for us?” Two Time questioned warmly, dark eye shimmering with curiosity. Even if it involved another grand escape to somewhere forbidden, they were sure anything Azure had in mind would be better than this.

Azure shifted, a shy smirk coming to his lips that Two Time wouldn’t dare to let slip by.

“Someone is awfully smiley today.” They poked, grinning themself now. “I believe you’re rubbing off on me.”

“Ugh, enough..” Azure would groan, their own hand coming up to cover the traces of timid happiness on their face. “I want to go back out to the field with you, whenever we’re done.” He’d confess with submission, shoulders involuntarily curling in, making himself smaller in an attempt to deal with the embarrassment.

The quiet admission caught Two Time off guard, expecting to hear Azure say the commune’s garden, or their house even, but the field was a response they had let slip their mind entirely. “The field..?” They traded the thought out loud for a silent refresher that their brain would happily provide, that night in the nightshade field…

“Yeah, we can pay a visit after.” Two Time caved, reflecting on the memory now that it had been brought up. They hadn’t really given it much thought after it had happened, and there was a pretty good reason for it as well.

Azure returned a gentle smile, not saying much else.

Two Time finished up their task early with the assistance of Azure, leaning back and stretching in the wooden chair they were sitting in. A long yawn covered by their gloved hand escaped their mouth. Azure couldn’t help but copy the behavior, back popping from having sat in the same position for a while.

“Tired?” He asked casually, tilting his head to try and read Two Time’s expression past all the black fringe that hung freely in their face. They wanted so badly to reach over and just brush it out of their face for them.

Two Time shook their head, standing up and pushing in their chair, the wooden legs staggering against the old, patterned carpet. “A little, but I’ll survive.” In which they’d wink at him, an act that’d make Azure’s actions stiffen.

Azure peered at their small collection that had accumulated over the last hour. The only material that was left seemed to be more books of Spawn and children’s books, a sorry comparison to the abundance of knowledge that was ready to be burned away without a second thought. They turned back to Two Time, seeing them talk to the librarian now. He sighed, knowing it’d probably be a while, his eyes turning downward to the box that sat on the floor, one book in particular that rested on top catching his attention.

The cover looked pretty flimsy, and it was definitely dated; regardless, Azure made sure no one was watching first before picking it up. It resembled a travel guide, something they had only seen mentioned in their collection of works at home, but it followed the description accurately enough in his mind. They cracked it open to a random page, various photographs and paragraphs quick to greet his eyes. Azure pushed a sigh out from his lips. He knew it was their job to sort through all these without any exceptions, but Two Time couldn’t have shown him this for a moment? At least for the pictures?

“Crossroads..” he mumbled under his breath, the words coming out unpracticed.

All the photographs were of places that seemed out of touch to Azure, bridges and towers filled with people and other seemingly prominent figures that adorned bizarre styles. It was… weird not to see the mention of Spawn anywhere for once.

Azure turned the page a few more times, stopping at a strange picture that seemed out of place compared to the bright and happy genre of the others.

It almost looked altered in some way, unnatural. Everything seemed fine at a glance, a typical nature view, yet it lacked people, which would’ve been fine if it wasn’t for the sky. The natural colors of the space were devoid of normalcy, replaced with an eyesore of black and spotted red, stretching out across the void like tanned animal skin on a frame. Azure wrinkled their nose, confused and strangely disturbed. He looked down at the subtitle for an answer, yet it didn’t give him much of an explanation, information written completely irrelevant even.

“Azure.”

He jumped, head swiveling to see Two Time standing by his side, letting out a groan.

“Two Time..!” Azure whisper-yelled, deflating right after and resumed with only annoyance left for the other. They could be dead silent when they wanted to be.

They smiled triumphantly, palm ghosting along Azure’s broad shoulder. “Got you,” they said smugly, eyes losing focus and instead paying attention to the book that lay on the table. “What are we looking at?”

Azure turned back, mouth ready to hurriedly explain what he saw before he faltered. The picture from before had changed, magically normal compared to what it had once been. The funny-looking people and scenic sky had painted itself back into the picture, description now matching up with the photo.

“Just…” They weren’t sure what to say. Had he accidentally huffed nightshade powder this morning? Or did he not get enough sleep?

“...looking at all these places. Strange stuff.” He mumbled; they really weren’t supposed to be looking at this anyway, so he settled for helpless curiosity as his excuse.

Two Time hummed, having a less pleasant reaction to the photos, but they understood the interest.

“It’s a pretty view,” they stated blankly, not commenting on the people. Azure already knew how Two Time felt about non-believers, and he shared the same sentiment to some degree. It was better not to dwell on the outside when their purpose was right here. Azure closed the guide. Must’ve been his imagination. Besides, he had more important things to worry about.

“All set then?” Azure questioned, standing up from their chair. He scooped the book off the surface and placed it back into the box, shaking off the eerie feeling that washed over him once parted with it. They wedged their fingers underneath the box, lifting it with ease.

Two Time nodded. “Yes, the librarian said she’d handle the shelving."

That was enough for Azure to forget about the previous encounter, his mind already fixated on the field.

Azure and Two Time walked side by side, both equally beaten. The burning took longer than anticipated, the faint stench of smoke clung to their clothes much like a stain. Getting rid of it would be a task Two Time wouldn’t look forward to doing later.

The tall grasses swayed lazily with the cool breeze, their blades rippling, air fresh and light compared to what was in the library. They made it to the trees, brushing past to reveal the familiar field that seemed to stretch out in all directions, unbroken by trees or buildings, the blue sky starting to turn a pale yellow.

“You know, one day we should have a picnic here,” Azure suggested, already making his way toward the clearing to sit.

Two Time looked around, nightshades just as pretty as last time, maybe even more so now that they could observe them in the sunlight. “Not sure how we’d sneak everything we’d need out here.”

Azure chuckled, a then thoughtful look crossing his face that wouldn’t go unnoticed by the other. Knowing him, he was probably actually thinking of a viable way to bring the basket, blanket, and all the food.

Grass bent underneath their weight, Two Time laying down to look up at the sky while Azure remained upright, fingers intertwined in the grass.

“I think reading out here would be nice too,” Two Time added. The field was similar to the old tree that Azure liked to sit by, the only difference being distance and the flowers, obviously.

“Ooooh, you’re right.” Azure shifted his position, seemingly hard to find a good pose.

The movement naturally caught Two Time’s attention, turning their head to watch. A smile of endearment fell on them as their eyes zeroed in on something else, a small and vibrant ladybug crawling up Azure’s pant leg.

“You have someone on you,” Two Time said warmly, arm bridging over to hold up their pointer finger and coax the small insect to crawl up on. Azure watched silently, the little spotted bug’s segmented legs ready to maneuver left before inevitably crawling up Two Time’s finger in a slow manner. They steadily rose up from the grass, being careful not to disturb the ladybug.

Azure moved a bit closer, both of their wide eyes watching the creature together. “They say they’re good luck, you know.” He reached out to touch the insect briefly, its armored shell just as smooth as it looked, reflecting off the sun.

“Do you remember when you were absolutely terrified of bugs?” Two Time asked, a smirk coming to their face, to which Azure would quickly roll their eyes.

“I was twelve. Being afraid of bugs at that age is a valid fear..!” Azure quickly retorted, blood rushing to their face to give it a light pink hue as they resisted the urge to pull their hat down.

“Is it..?” Two Time taunted, their tone playfully doubtful.

“It is! Besides, you’re one to talk! You were afraid of…”

A pause hung in the air as Azure began to fumble with their words. Now that he was thinking about it, Two Time was a pretty fearless child, or perhaps they just kept their fears concealed better than he did. They would perform dangerous acts with that same blank expression then, a trait they were praised for by the higher-ups in their.. family.

Two Time smirked, watching Azure’s struggle with pleasure. “Go on. Don’t leave me waiting.”

Azure sighed with defeat, knowing he’d lost. Regardless, he thought his point was still valid.

“Doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, my fear was reasonable.” They huffed.

The other rolled their eyes, gaze going back down to the ladybug that was still ploddingly crawling around their finger.

“Still afraid…?” They teased, holding up the ladybug closer to Azure.

He pushed their hand away lightly. “Oh, shut up,” he snickered, no real malice in his voice at all.

Azure’s laugh triggered Two Time to laugh, the trembling of their body causing the ladybug to fly away. Neither cared, both falling into a silence as they went back to watching the sun.

All the chores and banter made him forget what he was actually here for.

Azure glanced over at Two Time, studying their profile with a quiet affection. The setting sun painted the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink, the final rays of daylight casting a warm glow over the field of flowers.

"Hey, Two Time?" Azure finally spoke, breaking the comfortable silence between them. Their voice sounded tight, Azure swallowing right after the words left his throat.

“Yes?”

Azure plucked a green blade from the dirt, flicking it aside.

“I need to tell you something, something important,” he murmured, vocals almost consumed by the breeze. “And you can’t interrupt… okay?”

Two Time didn’t share the same shaky nervousness that laced the others' energy, only patience and warmth remaining. They made a pinching gesture with their fingers by their lips, pulling it across their mouth as if there was a zipper there, giggling softly before gradually falling silent.

Azure smiled back, but it held no trace of genuineness. “Okay.”

They paused, his hands anxiously clutching at the grass, still picking at the strands. They needed to just say it. He needed to get this out now or he was never going to be able to.

“It’s not…” Azure hesitated. “It’s not something I’m proud of.”

And it was only then did Two Time’s previous bliss began to dim, worry now clawing away at their stomach the more Azure kept talking. The bouncy joy in their tail ceased, curling and going dormant in the grass.

Azure laughed shyly, refusing to meet Two Time’s eyes. “I feel like… you already know what I’m going to say, don’t you?”

He thought maybe if he negated the seriousness of this, it wouldn’t be as bad. Two Time would laugh and nod, and they would silently agree to never speak of this moment again. Unlike a ladybug however, Azure wasn’t that lucky. They never were.

“No,” they said blankly. “I don’t.”

Two Time wasn’t sure why they said that. Maybe they wanted to hear it come from Azure directly, or maybe they were still in denial about what he was going to say. Either way, Azure looked just as taken aback.

“Oh.” All the saliva left Azure’s throat at that moment, leaving him uncomfortably dry. “Well.. I don’t know. I guess… its…”

Now Azure wished they had never said anything, a fresh wave of nausea filling their stomach like water. Was it still possible to backtrack? To say never mind? To apologize for wasting their time?

His fingers clenched the grass tighter. “It’s about you. About… all this.”

Two Time’s eyes flickered, and for a moment, Azure swore they saw softness.

“I pray every night,” Azure stated, voice trembling now. “I pray for it to go away. I pray for forgiveness. But I just…”

It was getting hard to speak; his throat felt like the lining was replaced with sandpaper, thick balls of cotton then stuffed all the way down to his trachea. Azure wanted to cry, yet the determination to uphold his deteriorating strength persisted.

“I don’t know when it started,” Azure whispered. “But sometimes, when I look at you–” They stopped, biting their lip hard. “I just feel so much, and I know I’m not supposed to, but I can’t… I can’t stop.”

“It’s horrible.” Azure was rushing, trying to fit all his words out in a hurry before it all came crashing down. “I know the teachings. What everyone expects. But it’s you, and I—”

Two Time finally spoke, but their voice was sharp.

“Stop.”

Azure blinked, pressure building up in their eyes. “Two Ti–”

“I said stop.” Two Time reasserted, voice harsher.

What were they meant to do in this situation? They almost cursed Azure for putting them here, for putting them in this position, for everything he’d done up until this point. It made Two Time angry just thinking about all the times Azure had subtly displayed their attraction toward them.

“What are you doing?” They asked angrily, demanding an answer that they knew wouldn’t satisfy them no matter what the other said. “Do you even know what you’re saying?”

Azure sniffled, the corners of their eyes stinging terribly.

“Azure, you can’t just…” Their hands gestured to nothing, falling limp in their lap, anger melting into sympathy. “No, we– we’re not doing this. I won’t let you…”

Two Time bit their tongue, a swirl of emotions ready to pour out at the notice. They were disgusted, taken aback, angry, upset, and most upsettingly, touched.

“…drag me into your sin. Not this time.”

Azure clenched his fists in his lap, exasperation for the other growing like a tumor. The fact that Two Time reduced their feelings to nothing more than a simple sin was both heartbreaking and insulting. Something they’d contemplated for years was discarded and tossed away in a matter of mere minutes. The worst part? Azure expected it.

“You think I want this? You think I chose this?” He cried, his hat pulled back just enough to see the fury in his eyes.

Two Time then stood up from the grass abruptly, Azure quickly doing the same. “Azure, you’re sick. You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“I’m not sick,” Azure shot back. “I’m—” He stopped, the words hanging there as tears finally began to cascade down his cheeks. They pulled the brim of their hat down, hands covering his face as an extra guard.

Two Time’s gaze immediately softened, not intending to make him cry. Still, they questioned their own intentions and what they wanted from all this. It was an offense to everyone back at home, to waste their time and ignore the teachings that they put their whole lives into. It was an even greater offense to Spawn and its will, both of them surely condemned now if not before.

“I’m not dragging you anywhere. I just needed you to know. Because I thought maybe you…”

The words hung on the tip of their tongue, afraid, but ready.

“I thought maybe you liked me too.” Azure choked out, shame blooming in his throat and traveling to his aching chest. They stared at each other, the wind tugging at their clothes. Something sacred and terrible had been spoken aloud.

Two Time winced, as if the words had physically hurt them somehow. There was certainly no going back now, even if they wanted to. Their eyes flashed with something; fear, yes, but also something tender, like love. “You shouldn’t have told me,” they whispered.

“I know,” Azure whimpered, tears running hot down their cheeks. “I’m sorry.”

Two Time felt their own eyes start to water as well, regret setting in. Their shoes shuffled along in the grass, the setting sun beginning to disappear behind all the shrubbery. They gently wrapped their arms around Azure with care, the other immediately reciprocating and leaning into the touch.

“I love you, Azure.” They said, words both heavy and weightless at the same time. “Please don’t apologize.”

Azure’s grip on Two Time tightened, his silent tears soaking into their shirt.

All the orange light in the sky disappeared, white faintly settling on the horizon as the remaining space was now a deep purple. Both of them were paused in the moment; the only noise made was by Azure, muffled sniffles disturbing the field.

It was Two Time who broke the embrace, pulling away from Azure’s chest. They bear witness to his tear-streaked face, eyes tired and exhausted from so many emotions in such a short amount of time. They carefully brushed strands of brown hair out of his face, taking care of the tears right after.

“I didn’t mean any of that,” Two Time whispered. “I’m scared. I don’t know what’ll happen to us at the commune. I– I don’t know what Spawn thinks of us, and..” They trailed off, tears threatening to come back.

“I know, I know. No one… no one needs to know.” Azure whimpered, rubbing at their wet eyes.

Something about keeping this big a secret didn’t feel right to Two Time. It felt like betrayal. What choice did they really have though?

“Okay..” They mumbled, trying to familiarize themself with the idea.

Two Time had never dreamed of being in a relationship, much less anything beyond that. But they could feel the thrum of excitement underneath their lips. This was something new.

Azure’s grip on Two Time faltered, gaining enough strength to stand on their own. “Do you really feel the same? You’re not saying this out of pity.. are you?”

“Of course not. I…” Two Time sighed. “I’ve always liked you, Azure. I’ve just never realized it. I… didn’t want to realize it.”

“Every time the thought of something like this came up.. I always tried to distract myself, to not think about it, and pray for it to go away. But, you’re so kind and..” Two Time wore a bashful expression. “I don’t know. I guess.. I wanted to protect you.”

Azure felt his heart waver; his previous emotions seemed like nothing now in the face of acceptance.

“You’re so stupid, Two Time..” They muttered half-heartedly, taking their hands into his, squeezing lightly.

They wished they could’ve bit back, to say something as equally as soft as Azure had, but there was nothing. The other didn’t seem to have anything after that either. Two Time looked back toward the horizon, curfew surely in an hour. Azure noticed as well, head turning to the path they had taken to get here.

“What do we do now? I mean…” Azure hummed, hands uncertain and shaky in Two Time’s steady ones. “I’ve never.. you know.”

Two Time let go of one hand, the other intertwining tightly together with Azure’s in the same way they would as children when he was afraid of something. The two began to walk back the way they had come.

“We’ll figure it out.”

Their fingers stayed interlocked all the way until they inevitably had to let go.
