          Yes, sounds good. I do like the character of Robb Stark so that might work. :-)

          Or I could imagine something like the following: the Targaryens never conquered Westeros (maybe the Doom didn't even happen), so the North, just as the other parts of the continent, is still its own kingdom.
          The White Walkers have been defeated a generation or two ago already and which drastically changed the climate and the seasons. The North thus grew (a little) warmer, allowing for a much denser population, meaning more peasants, more food that can be produced, larger cities north of the Neck, larger armies etc.

          In this scenario, an OC would make the most sense, though.

                  One would have to come up with an explanation how, without the Targaryens having conquered Westeros (ergo with no Tourney of Harrenhal), Ned and Ashara would have met in the first place, and why Rickard Stark would have agreed to such a union, which would not really have benefitted the North politically. I do find Ned/Ashara more appealing, though.

                      Well, yes. Of course. I mean, I somehow liked the idea that the Targaryens never conquered Westeros and that when the White Walkers came back one or two generations earlier, Westeros basically defeated them on their own, without dragons and such.

                      Ned and Ashara could have met in another way. Ned could have been fostered somewhere other than the Vale, further south, and met her there. And if Brandon were still alive, the union probably wouldn't have been such a problem for Rickard either. Then he might have agreed to it...

                              If the story is (at the beginning at least) to follow the plot of the books, I think the Targaryens even MUST have conquered Westeros and then been driven from the throne again in Robert's Rebellion. Otherwise, the necessary constellations of characters and marriages would not have come about at all - or only with a great many twistings of the story.

                              In that case, however, I would stick to the idea that Catelyn would be the mother, but that the protagonist would still be an OC, so that there is more potential for the story to differ from the books. The character could maybe be Robb's younger twin brother or something like that...

                                  Hmm, not sure. If the OC were the eldest son and thus Ned's heir right from the beginning, it could just as well just be Robb. There would not be much of a point in introducing an OC just to make him a 100% replacement of Robb.
                                  Making him the second son would also make it more impactful for the character and the story in case Robb were to die again (like in the books).

                                                  Hmm, that depends on who it's about and what the circumstances are. It wasn't that common with the Targaryens either, but it was more "normal" than with others. And even then, things didn't always go smoothly.

                                                  I also always find it a bit difficult (to the point of becoming unbelievable) when a protagonist, no matter if it's a male Stark or Jon Snow or Oberyn Martell or whoever, has two or three girlfriends/lovers/wives at the same time and just because the character is such a great guy, all these women are of course totally fine with that.

                                                  So I'm a little torn on that topic. It CAN work of course, but it's a ride on the razor's edge so to speak, as the whole thing can very quickly and easily get quite cheesy and silly.

                                                      Haha, I think 3 or even 4 women is already quite the number :-D

                                                      And as said before, it very much depends on the circumstances and how it is build up. If those 2, 3 or 4 women just go along with him having his own harem just becuase he's such a great guy, then that's too cheap for me.

                                                      So there would have to be an explanation why they would go along with it other than just "wow, Artos is the greatest man ever and we're all so happy that he has chosen us of the thousands he could have had".

                                                      Could be that he's basically cheating on all those women, so none of the women would know of the others or that they all know it but none is happy with it. I'm totally against all 2, 3, 4 women knowing of the other women and being fine with it just because Artos is "the man". So if you have any idea how to do this, let me know. :-)

                                                          Of course they would get with him one at a time, but that doesn't answer the questions whether or not each woman would know about the other women, whether or not they would be okay with it AND (most important of all) if they were okay with it, WHY.

                                                          Apart from that, one would also have to decide what status the women would actually have. As far as I know, the religion of the North does not allow for polygamous marriages, so only one could be the wife and the others would just be his mistresses?!

                                                              It does make sense, yes, but as I said before: for all the women to be okay with that just because Artos is such a great guy and them all "by accident" to be bisexual at that... that's a bit too cheap and kind of cheesy for me.
