A rancid dust hung in the sun-drenched air like a heavy cloud, thick with the scent of unripe apples and the weight of a languid silence. Thoughts of his sister’s muted, weary voice could not help but draw Albus into a brooding, solemn reverie:
“My duty lies here, in Godric’s Hollow. Ariana is defenseless, her soul crippled — and if I will not be her shield, then what will remain of the man within me? Everything else can wait.”
Gellert listened drowsily, motionless beneath the indolence that devoured him whole; but when he finally spoke, his words cleaved the stillness like a sharpened blade:
“You worship a virtue forged from your own chains, and call it duty? I see only fear — the fear of a slave. Your power could vanquish death itself, yet you squander it wiping the drool from a mad girl’s chin. Cast off your pity; only from its ashes can the throne of your true self be raised. You have almost learned not to call the ugly beautiful — now learn not to mistake humiliation for strength. You wish to save Ariana? Then lead the Greater Good as its master. But crawl on your knees, and you will only prolong her suffering.”
