Summary
Located in the River Somme of France, it is 1916 and World War I is two years in. The Great War had originally been predicted to be over by Christmas of 1914, but the Allies wouldn't end up achieving victory until November of 1918. Unaware of this, Corporal Levi Ackerman and Eren Jaeger meet for the first time. As the two men grow closer through late-night watches and recon missions (among other things), they subconsciously throw themselves into a forbidden romance that could cost them their lives; if the battlefield doesn't take them first.

Levi, Furlan, and Isabel try to navigate learning the rules of the military while trying to hide their secrets close to their chests. Meanwhile, Erwin, Hange, and Mike pay extra attention to their newest recruits.
He hated it when Furlan called him deaf. He wasn’t deaf; he could hear the screams of terror from one of the alleyways around him. He always knew when Furlan was snoring if they were in the same room. He knew even his light-foot steps made noise that bounced off the walls of buildings, even if he couldn’t understand what people were saying, even if they yelled in his ear, he still knew they were talking. The world he lived in was made of soft buzzing and harsh crashes, but he could still hear that much.
And even if he couldn’t hear all that well, he made up for it in other ways. He could read lips, and he knew sign language. That was enough to get by. Even if he did have to constantly scan his surroundings when he was by himself. Having to always be looking around when people were talking in a group, so they wouldn’t know his biggest secret. -

Levi hadn’t meant to find the sky in Erwin’s eyes, but he’d never seen the sky before–not really. Glimpses of stardust and moonlight through cracks in the surface and pitfalls do nothing to truly uncover the beauty of the open, blue sky. No, Levi had never seen such a brilliant blue and hadn’t known it existed. He blames that blue on him losing the fight against the taller man; it’s the only way he could’ve gotten the upper hand on Levi. It had to have been that blue. The Underground is dark and damp, the colors muted, everything awash in a cloak of grey. In all cases, Erwin wasn’t one to tie rescued shipwreck victims up in their brig. However, special considerations must be made when the first move that the shorter man made upon waking up was to steal Miche’s blade and round on Erwin himself, a wild challenge in his eyes as he had lofted the sword in Erwin’s direction. Untrained, clearly, from his stance and his hold on the sword’s hilt. Untrained but still deadly it seems, as it had taken both Miche and Hange’s skills to knock the sword from his hands and force him to his knees, hands secured behind his back.
The man was a mystery, and Captain Erwin Smith couldn't resist him.

Erwin, may I introduce to you Captain Levi Ackerman of the Orvud District MP.” Frieda looped her arm around his to prevent him from escaping. “And Levi, this is Captain Erwin Smith of the Survey Corps.”Levi’s eyes widened comically as he glanced at Erwin, unsure. But then Erwin was looking back at him, waiting on his move because of course, proper etiquette dictated Levi’s first move. Levi cleared his throat and extended a gloved hand. “It’s a pleasure, Captain Smith.”
Erwin was supposed to shake it, but he took it in his hand instead, and kissed the back of it with the lightest touch. “The pleasure is all mine.”
