Summary
She eventually made the gut wrenching decision to turn back, knowing that giving herself up was the end of her freedom, what she had fought for and tested for and been shot at for and exposed to deadly neurotoxin for and had nearly died for.
But she had to live. She couldn't just allow herself to die.

Summary
Something had changed between them down here, in the bowels of Aperture Science. Chell felt... she didn't know, maybe a little protective of the smaller woman? Their roles had been switched so suddenly; GLaDOS depended on Chell for survival, and if she was honest, Chell didn't need GLaDOS in the slightest. Anyway, GLaDOS was stuck in a human body and neither of them had the faintest idea of how to fix that.
Maybe Chell didn't want to fix it.

In which Rick wants Chell and GLaDOS to relax. His solution to their stress? Space cake.
'"I assume that this trip does have a purpose besides having 'fun'. Otherwise I will have to take back all compliments I've given you over the past few months." GLaDOS said.
"We'll have fun. Don't stress it." Chell said, completely ignoring what her companion had said. GLaDOS frowned, but shrugged it off. You can't just expect a human to suddenly stop wanting to have fun however homicidal they might be.'

“You probably do not think this is cruel,” GLaDOS says suddenly, not taking her gaze from the mouse for a second, “After all, you have such enormous capacity for cruelty, I doubt you can recognise mistreatment even when it is right before your eyes. However, a normal human with basic abilities of empathy, love, and compassion, would correctly identify my treatment of this animal as cruel.”
Chell says nothing.
“However, if this experiment were to be submitted to an ethics committee, it would receive full approval. Cruelty, in and of itself, is not wholly banned in science, after all. It is simply needless cruelty, the kind you excel in, that is not permitted. What I am doing is necessary for testing conditions. What I do is the only way for knowledge to progress.”
