All that bullshit at St. Judes, all those moments spent darting around the Upper East Side, to be a good student, to be a writer, to be with Serena. All of it worth it to get to this moment. He didn't get the girl, but now he doesn't have anything left to lose. He's not quite sure what to do with that.

Chuck paused for a moment. As the years had gone by and his responsibilities with family and the corporation grew, he'd grown to be a surprisingly contemplative man and by now Serena knew that his pause meant he was really thinking the matter through because he wanted to give her a real answer.
