I felt optimistic and idealistic. If I had gotten this far, and left my depressive routine of dreaming on the daily behind me, what was to say that I couldn’t make it farther? Your words in my mind echoed in my head, and the warmth of your hug tingled on my body. None of it was real, but I still believed in it. I had to. Of course, you were none the wiser to my thoughts as you laid there, doped up on analgesics and the shock of the situation as a whole, but I like to think that, even then, when I smiled at you, you felt my hope. I had always relied on you to be the human conduit of whatever I was feeling inwardly, so that it could be transferred outwardly through your ever-expressive face. So of course, I thought, you would feel the hope that I felt then. It was legitimate. There was nothing to fear.
Now, as I recall that scene, with my head in my hands, I remember the afterwards. I remember how misplaced my feelings often are.
