Bilbo and Bofur begin courting in Rivendell. When Bilbo later discovers he is pregnant, he rushes to tell Bofur the good news, but Bofur doesn't believe him. None of the dwarves do.
And then come the Rock Giants, Goblintown, some mutant goblin-eating creature, climbing fir trees, fighting crazed orcs, and being air-lifted out by the eagles of Manwe.
It's enough to stress any expectant parent to their breaking point, which is as good an excuse as any for what happens at Beorn's.
