The Exile : reading books to pass time and to learn how socializing works was at first, a good idea. But the more they read, the more confident they became that talking to people won't be that bad. They fight soulless after all, how could talking to others be THAT different?
It was, indeed, very different.
Considering that they had the most special luck when meeting the people of this new home, Eridia, no amount of reading could have prepared them for this. At least they were nice… right? Or was this an elaborate scheme? If this was so wrong, how could it be that they trusted the person the most, who felt really dangerous.

Vere sat upon his perch outside of his prison and watched them pretend to be fine. They were far from fine—nothing more than a ruse to hide how sick they felt. But he noticed. Oh, did he notice, from the moment they left the Wet Wick and walked toward the market with what little change they had in their pocket—probably a pittance given by the likes of Leander.
His tail ticked behind his back as he waited for a customer to wander into his den. No one came, so he observed them going from vendor to vendor in search of a cheap breakfast. Nothing there would help them feel any better. Dripping grease and rotten produce would shock their stomach into the worst case of indigestion, especially in their state. They were sick, wholly and completely.
For some reason, he wanted to help them.

Meanwhile Vere's world has re-started, and no one seems to be able to get accustomed to the new norm.
