Pavel Chekov is the youngest crewman of the U.S.S Entreprise but he is struggling towards the end of the 5 year mission. He's been struggling for longer than that since Academy days with mental health issues and self harm and a lot of internalized shame and stigma. But tonight he made a mistake and cut too deep. The young navigator is understandably terrified to have to go down to Sickbay for medical attention and face the infamous Dr McCoy.

At the beginning of the five-year mission Jim choses Chekov to accompany him on a small, supposed to be easy going away mission to an unknown planet. After they crash their shuttle and are unable to contact the ship, nothing could go worse, except maybe for Chekov having a little stomach-ache. But when Chekov gets progressively worse, Jim must suddenly take care of his very sick navigator, while also making sure they’ll reach the Enterprise in time before he takes a turn for the worst. And as if that wasn’t enough, when Chekov has a nightmare, Jim also deals with the emotional guilt that’s been secretly bothering the kid. But although Chekov feels absolutely miserable and Jim is a little clueless, the whole thing brings them closer together and makes them realize how important they are for each other.
Set between ‘Into Darkness’ and ‘Beyond’; just a lot of Jim and Chekov fluff focussing on their father-son-relationship/friendship :)

As it turns out, the experience is more than what he bargained for, in both the good and the bad. Leonard isn't all that surprised by the bad.

Background (Star Trek The Journey Home):
In the 22nd century, the whales of Earth's oceans are extinct. As a consequence, the Earth becomes endangered of being destroyed by unknown aliens, whose damaging calls to the whales of Earth are going unanswered. So the Enterprise crew, under Captain Kirk, travel back to the time before the whales were hunted out of existence. The 1980s. Their self-imposed mission: to transport a pair of whales back to their own time to reintroduce into the world's oceans. When, in performing his part, Commander Chekov is captured by American marines, and the Enterprise crew have to stage a dramatic rescue.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Chekov is captured by American marines, and it soon becomes clear that cold war America is no place for a Russian. Now it's up to Kirk, McCoy and Sulu to rescue Chekov, whilst Scotty and Spock work to get their ship - and the transporters - back up and running, before Chekov's situation can become truly dire. At the same time, Sulu's long held feelings for Chekov come roaring to the surface, which leaves him facing the nerve-wracking prospect that his friend might finally find out.

Pike gave one more gentle squeeze, shot a glare at Marcus, and left the doorway. Chekov turned to close the door behind him. Pike caught the kid’s eyes before the door closed, and that protective fatherly urge returned to him full force.
Well, there went the rest of his goddamn peaceful morning.
