Finan felt like he was balanced on a high cliff, pinwheeling on the edge, and Sihtric – and Ingrith and Sig – were spreading out a blanket beneath him, to catch him as he fell. The devil inside him was grasping him from behind, clamoring to pull him back from the edge, to keep him forever, to kill him. He would leap for his freedom either way – but could he leap where he would be caught? His heart was hammering like thunder in his chest, breath coming fast and hard as if he’d run a mile flat-out, blood in his mouth as if he’d taken a punch.
Finan staggered over and sank back down on the bedroll. He felt drunk. He reached out with both hands, fisting Sihtric’s tunic in his hands. “It won’t be easy,” he warned. “I’m fucked up, Sihtric. I’m exhausted and I can’t sleep and I feel empty all the time, and there’s a devil inside me that’s trying to kill me, and you’re going to be in Valhalla when I’m in Hell. I’m not fucking okay.”
