Viktor leaned back in his chair. Across from him, Jayce flipped through his notes.
"Do you ever wonder," Viktor mused, voice barely above a whisper, "what it must feel like?" Jayce glanced up, brow furrowing. "What?" Not entirely listening to Viktor.
"To connect. Not through words. Not through gestures. But through something deeper." He gestured toward the holo-display, an intricate rendering of the Na'vi queue, the biological tendril that allowed them to bond with the world around them. "Their neural network isn't just communication. It's… understanding. True understanding. To merge with another being, to feel what they feel-" He trailed off, his fingers grazing the edge of the console.
"You make it sound so mystical. It's just a biological function, Viktor." Jayce replied.
Viktor scoffed, lightly leaning himself back into his chair, a knowing smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Yes, and a sunrise is just light refraction, and love is just a series of chemical reactions, hmm?" Viktor waved his hand at Jayce as his elbow rested against the cold table.OR
Jayce and Viktor are both scientists in Pandora studying biology, where they work together as their feelings evolve.

She pulls back and laughs, like she had been expecting something different. She sips her champagne and swirls it in her glass as she considers her response, “Mm. I suppose it depends which ‘here’ you mean.” She raises an eyebrow at him. Jayce mirrors the expression, and gestures for her to continue. “Well, here can be one’s place in the universe. Very broad, and a much too philosophical conversation for two people who have just met, so I’m sure that’s not what you meant. Here as in Piltover? Well I was born nearby. Here as in the academy; well I am a student just as you are-“ she reaches up and taps the tip of her finger against the academy crest pin on his suit “- here as in this particular party? Well, when your team wins it is only appropriate to celebrate, yes?”
Jayce smiles, “You’re a student? I should have expected as much. And you said your team won the competition, that’s really impressive. Although, I think I know all the guys on the team that won.” Jayce smirks. He feels a little bad, catching her in a lie. Though her reaction isn’t what he’s expecting.

For all Jayce knows, Viktor could be coming home to a spouse who loves him dearly and who Viktor loves just as much. Viktor could be coming home to a partner who’d kiss him in the doorway, and then they’d lay in their bed, sleep in that same bed, and do things in that bed, and Jayce is totally not jealous of a person that may not even exist. (Was the sarcasm in that last sentence clear enough?)
Jayce just wants to be sure that if he expressed his interest more clearly, he would not be risking Viktor’s pity and the wrath of Viktor’s lover when Viktor would eventually express his discomfort to his most loved person about working with the man who confessed to him.
So, when he sees Viktor walking by with a small girl holding his hand and looking exactly like Viktor, his hopes break. Because Viktor clearly has a daughter, and so there’s no way Viktor doesn’t have someone special in his life — the girl’s mother, for example.
